One Myth I Wish I Could Dispel"Feminism means you can't like sexy things"One Myth I Wish I Could Dispel3 months ago in Personal More Like This
After doing a series of comics standing up for women's rights, there's a lot of really negative rumors going on around me right now. Most of which point to the hypocrisy that I use to draw fetish artwork and that recently I made pin-ups that were "sexy" in nature. Because, of course, if you're an artist who stands up for women's rights from that moment on you're not allowed to EVER draw women in a way that might be construed as potentially "sexy," lest you be labeled a hypocrite.
As I've mentioned before in previous journals, I really can't stand this mentality the internet has of polarizing extremes. You've always gotta be in one extreme or you're in the other. There's never the possibility that you could be in the middle like, you know, a normal person would be.
I understand why that is: it's easier to point out fallacies and bitch and whine about people when they fit into nice neat black and white spec
Sexy VS SexistIt seems that the gaming world is finally waking up to the fact that women DO actually play video games. They (the gaming industry) are not being mature about it, but the fact that a female perspective and voice is being heard more and more is a very good thing in my books.Sexy VS Sexist8 months ago in Personal More Like This
The latest controversy to break out in the video game world has been over niche gaming studio Vanillaware's recent title "Dragon's Crown," and the absurdly sexualized female character of "The Sorceress" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQKCgal1vdw
Some people are, naturally, offended that such a ludicrous character design with no sense of reality or function even exists, while the other side keeps saying "why are we even talking about this?" Both sides are being vocal, but they also seem to be talking past one another. One side seems to want to rid gaming entirely of sexy character designs, while the other seems to think this is some sort of "feminist agenda" and are being sexist in response because they fear having a

CGI Zelda Movie Shut Down... 6 Years Ago
Imagi Animation Studios, the company responsible for the CGI Astro Boy and TMNT movies, made a 1 minute test reel to show to Nintendo trying to pitch for a Legend of Zelda movie. The pitch made in 2007 was ultimately turned down by Nintendo, likely due to Nintendo being extraordinarily squeamish about letting an American animation company handle one of their properties after the abysmal failure of the live action Super Mario Bros movie. And hopes that this project would ever be looked at again were rendered null and void when the american branch of the animation company was shut down back in 2010.
But the good news for everyone is that you can see this
What's Wrong With Praise? So this is another one of those artistic taboos we're never suppose to talk about, apparently. The idea of giving back positive feedback to an artist. It's seen as "coddling" as "babying" as "inflating the ego" and has such intense negative associations. It seems to be generally accepted that the only way to critique someone's work is to point out ONLY the negative parts. Any attempt to point out anything positive or something you liked about the work is seen as being unhelpful towards the artist's growth. What's Wrong With Praise?5 months ago in Personal More Like This
And frankly I think that's a bunch of hogwash.
Speaking from my own experience, I rarely ever get anything positive said about my work in a constructive way. I might get a lot of "good jobs" or people talking happily about my comics because they made them laugh, but I rarely if ever get any comments that go into detail explaining WHY I did something right. On the flip side, the amount of negative criticism and nitpicking is almost hilariously rampant, not just on my artwork but on th
Disney vs Lucas ArtsIf ever you bring up Disney in a conversation, people immediately recite tired old issues with the company that haven't been true for a long time. For example, complaining about the excess of half-assed sequels. That was part of Michael Eisner's regime. When he left the studio the quality Disney was producing suddenly skyrocketed considerably. Likewise the excessive merchandising and branding of Disney related products has also ceased to be as all-consuming now that Eisner is gone. In fact, a lot of the main issues people had with Disney during the 90's and early 2000's was a result of Eisner.Disney vs Lucas Arts9 months ago in Personal More Like This
Since Eisner left, the Disney studio has done a REMARKABLE job in clearing their name of many of the atrocities they had committed during his regime. They promptly turned the animation department around and have even begun doing 2-D animated films again after Eisner said "no." Granted, at the moment 2-D is still in hiatus, but the situation isn't as dire as it use to be and there's still promise

Say what you will about Anita Sarkeesian, you gotta admit that people do take note of what she says for good or ill. In this piece of news, it's for the good.
As you might already know, in her latest video she outlined a simple "damsel frees herself" video game. Nothing too spectacular but it showcased how one can subvert the typical trope and make a strong female character out of it. While many were quick to criticize her for not making the game herself (given her kickstarter success), others took a more direct approach and actually made a game in 2 weeks.
The game is called "Sorry Mario Bros," and the plot is that Princess Peach decides to rescues herself by leaving Bowser's castle in world 8-4. You progress right to left through familiar, but slightly altered, original Mario Bros. worlds working your way backwards towards world 1-1. Along the way you can take detours and use Peach's float ability to reach hidden areas and collect "princess coins."

Microsoft Employees Disrupt Wii U Best Buy EventsRemember how Nintendo was showcasing some of their E3 games at participating Best Buy stores around the country? Well, apparently Microsoft employees have been hired to go to these events and preach about the Xbox One and make comments like "why would you buy a outdated Wii U when the Xbox One is right around the corner?"Microsoft Employees Disrupt Wii U Best Buy Events6 months ago in Personal More Like This
However, the employees aren't getting what they hoped for. Most customers just start bashing the Xbox One in response. Seriously, Microsoft, the people attending these Best Buy Wii U events are people who are intimately familiar with the crap you pulled at E3. They ain't takin' your shit.
At first I thought this might just be a case of one really loyal Microsoft employee taking matters into his own hands (especially since the original source was /v/), but reports have come in from numerous Best Buy's around the country that indicate many Microsoft employees have ambushed the demo lines trying to persuade people to switch to the Xbox One.
Since so many reports have com
Thoughts on the 'Trading Places' Pin-UpsFor the past few days I've been uploading a series of "pin-ups" of famous cartoon characters who've exchanged each other's outfits. I originally made these about 6 months ago, so they are a little outdated in comparison to how I work now.Thoughts on the 'Trading Places' Pin-Ups7 months ago in Personal More Like This
These weren't originally meant to be seen by the public. At the time I was still very sick and had stopped making comics and art all together. This was sort of a therapeutic way to try and get me back into drawing again. And even though they're "pin-ups," aside from a little creative licensing here or there I never tried to make any of them look slutty or give them M.C. Escher spines.
I must admit that looking back on this now from the vantage point of hindsight there are a few things I would've changed. I use more photo references now for hands and feet, so I probably would've spent more time making sure those looked better. I'd try to get the proportions of the character's bodies a little more accurate as well (Velma is too skinny), and try to match

But nowadays, taking character enhancement and development into account, I've fleshed him out a lot more. I may have worked hard on Zoey, but Timothy is actually my MOST developed OC.

The PS4 didn't really give me anything to look forward to.
XboxZero is the most boring console to date.
And all 3 of them are too f***ing expensive.
I never thought it would be possible, but I am so thoroughly uninterested in this console generation. Not even my rabid Nintendo fanboyism can get me through this apathy.

Honestly didn't see that one coming, but I am happy nonetheless. While the first game wasn't very remarkable, I just love the art style and the stark contrast the game presents compared to every other post-apocalyptic-near-future-world that exists. Chock me up to interested.
Didn't see this one coming either. Quite surprised, but personally don't care. I've never really paid attention to fighting games much, yes even Super Smash Bros. I have a feeling this will be one of those games that we think will be amazing, but the newest generation of kids won't understand why they should care (kinda like DuckTales).
Sidenote: Quite disappointed with the way they handled the demonstration by bringing out a woman to play multiplayer with and "destroying" her while simultaneously saying shit like "just give up... it will be over soon." Scripted or not, that scene was appalling.

The timing of my post about the nerdfighter minecraft server could've been better. Right before I posted about it, Hank Green made a video and showcased it briefly which resulted in a HUGE influx of new players. To compensate for the overload, the serves have been moved and updated to now host 1000 members at once!... with the net result of having glitches (like server lags and accidental bans) run rampant, followed by the crash of the forums. Yikes...!
To make matters worse, the 1.6 Horse Update is scheduled to come out this week, and the nerdcrafteria servers can't update until the plugins they use are updated as well. So that likely will cause a lot of connection issues and server problems as well.
I'd like to reassure everyone that this isn't normal behavior for the server. They are working on getting the forums back up and running and hopefully the new server will be able to handle the plethora of users better now. It's just gonna take a few days t
Censorship, Alex Ze Pirate, Commissions, BeiberCriticism =/= CensorshipCensorship, Alex Ze Pirate, Commissions, Beiber3 months ago in Personal More Like This
So after the last batch of comics about women's rights in video games and comics, a distressing amount of people seem to think that any form of criticism against something automatically means you want to outright censor it. As an artist myself I can't help but feel really depressed that so many people think in such stark black and white terms.
When I made a comic being critical of MGS's new "Quiet" character, I was not asking for her design to be changed. I was not demanding Kojima alter his work. I was not asking gamers to not support the game. Yet to read all the defensive comments that seems to be what a LOT of people think I was aiming for.
Let me be VERY clear here: Criticism is NEVER censorship. As much as I don't like a lot of the criticism that's been lobbied against my work, I've never considered people's criticism to be a form of censorship. I've never felt "oppressed" by people's harsh words, and in those rare instances where I hav

I've got about 5 commissions on the books right now, one of which is finished and a 2nd one which is nearly completed. If you haven't heard from me yet, this is probably why. I'm going a little slow lately so please be patient with me.
Please don't dismiss the government shutdown as "not a big deal."
Thousands of people are now out of work because of it, and millions more aren't able to get the money they need from services like WIC, food stamps, etc. Poor people are getting poorer, yet the rich bureaucrats who caused this disaster are still getting paid their salaries.
So yeah, it is a big deal. It may not personally affect you, but it DOES affect a very LARGE portion of our country. This is very much a BAD thing, so please don't try to dismiss it as "not a big deal" or be dismissive by saying things like "this has happened before so whatever." Ok?
Try to be respectful.
A Very Important UpdateI haven't posted here on DA in a while, so this might be new to a lot of you, but if you've been following some of the stuff happening over on tumblr it won't be unexpected. For the past several weeks I've been getting steadily worse both mentally and physically. I've been depressed before, but I've never been as bad as I've been recently. I've lashed out at people, been getting angrier and grumpier, been finding it harder and harder to listen to people giving me positive feedback, and have even started rapidly losing a lot of weight.A Very Important Update1 year ago in Personal More Like This
My enjoyment for drawing has been dropping, and many of you have probably noticed that I've been taking more and more time off lately. For every few comics I post, I tend to spend another week recuperating. But within the past 2 weeks it's spiked so bad that I seriously have to consider what's more important: my health or drawing.
So for the time being I am shutting down. I'll still be working on brentalfloss and updating those here, and the most current

I don't want to be big on YouTube, that's for sure. I've never liked getting in-front of the camera, I don't have the time or ambition to work on animations anymore, and I certainly can't crank out videos as fast as some of the big guys over there. It's a huge competition and I just don't want to have anything to do with that. I think my youtube page is marked private and you have to have specific links to view anything. I might make an odd video here or there, but they're most likely just goofy things I do for fun, not for any sort of attention or recognition.
I'm curious about how I should move forward with DA. I think a majority of my haters are outraged that I'm popular on DA and that I'm content with drawing simple cartoons when I'm obviously talented enough to do more comple

Let me try to explain..Is the Console War Over Before It Began?7 months ago in Personal More Like This
The latest details for the Xbox One show that pretty much every aspect of gaming culture that we hate has been incorporated into it. Needing to check in every 24 hours to make sure you've legally bought a game? Check. Not able to bring games over to a friend's house unless your friend ALSO buys the game? Check. Forcing game stores to sign an agreement to pay Microsoft a large percentage of the used sale fee? Check. More motion controls? Check. Inability to let independent-developers make games on their system? Check. Not backwards compatible? Check. Stronger emphasis on watching TV and movies than playing games? Check. Seriously, this is like a check list of all the worse possible things to include in a gaming console.
By that account, the PS4 is doing
'Why Are We Even Talking About This?'I get that phrase a lot, that and "over react much?" whenever I bring up ANY issue, be it from a video game, politics, or whatever. There seems to be a lot of people who just don't wanna talk about anything at all, and would much rather these discussions just not exist so they can get on with their lives.'Why Are We Even Talking About This?'3 months ago in Personal More Like This
You'll be unsurprised to learn that I don't agree with that wisdom. In my books, if you don't do anything, nothing is going to happen. If there's an injustice in the world somewhere and you stay silent, that injustice isn't going to fix itself. It will just keep happening. That, my friends, is complacency.
Then of course there are those people who don't believe that the world will ever change, therefor there's no reason to try, and actively try to stop anyone who dares to stand up for something. I can't begin to describe how annoying that mindset is to me. It's almost sadistic in it's very nature, by actively trying to stop people from making the world a better place by being dismissi
Censoring the InternetA few weeks ago I made mention of feminist Anita Sarkeesian who started a kickstarter for a web series called "Tropes Vs Women" specifically centered around how women are portrayed in video games.Censoring the Internet1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Despite the fact that kickstarters are payed for by people who've made the decision they want to contribute their money to the project, Anita came under attack from gamers for "scamming" audiences when her fund far exceeded the target goal. Just this past week it's come out that a 25 year old man from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada, created a video game where the object is to punch the crap out of Anita. Wounds, bruises, and blood gush out the more you beat her up in this virtual game, and it's drawn some widespread attention.
Whether you agree with her viewpoint is not the issue, it's the fact that this retaliation is just "wrong" on so many levels. Do these people realize that what they're doing is shooting themselves in the foot? Making a video game where you beat up someone who's making
