Microsoft Employees Disrupt Wii U Best Buy EventsRemember how Nintendo was showcasing some of their E3 games at participating Best Buy stores around the country? Well, apparently Microsoft employees have been hired to go to these events and preach about the Xbox One and make comments like "why would you buy a outdated Wii U when the Xbox One is right around the corner?"Microsoft Employees Disrupt Wii U Best Buy Events2 years ago in Personal More Like This
However, the employees aren't getting what they hoped for. Most customers just start bashing the Xbox One in response. Seriously, Microsoft, the people attending these Best Buy Wii U events are people who are intimately familiar with the crap you pulled at E3. They ain't takin' your shit.
At first I thought this might just be a case of one really loyal Microsoft employee taking matters into his own hands (especially since the original source was /v/), but reports have come in from numerous Best Buy's around the country that indicate many Microsoft employees have ambushed the demo lines trying to persuade people to switch to the Xbox One.
Since so many reports have com
Artist Intent vs Fan CriticismsThis has been a subject I've been interested in for years, and one which I personally struggle with on a near constant basis: Artist's intent versus fan criticisms. Before we begin I just want to make this clear that this journal is NOT about "ignoring criticisms" or any sort of endorsement of such an action. I'm gonna be accused of it, of course, but I just wanted to get that out of the way right now.Artist Intent vs Fan Criticisms2 years ago in Personal More Like This
As I've been observing fan interactions over the years I've noticed a severe increase in a sense of entitlement: IE: that if you love something enough you have a "right" to force the creators to change their content to suit your personal preferences. We saw this play out to the extremes this past summer with the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle, and we see it play out to a much lesser extent here on DA quite a bit.
Artists need feedback and criticisms to grow and improve their work, but at what point does it move beyond offering suggestions to help an artist improve to outright de
Q and A: ReduxI did a Q&A journal recently, but since some people didn't like the short curt often sarcastic one word responses I gave to most of the questions, I thought it would be a good idea to respond a little more in depth to some of them, especially since a lot of the questions asked were so similar to each other.Q and A: Redux2 years ago in Personal More Like This
What do you do when you have artist's block?
I tend to play video games, or go watch a movie. The best thing to do when you have artist's block is to get out of the area where the block is occurring. Go to a coffee shop and relax, or (since it's spring) go to a nearby park with a sketch pad and just start doodling. Artist blocks usually occur when you're trying too hard, so getting a change of scenery and allowing your brain to relax is what'll help get you through it.
What got you into comics?
A number of factors. First, I've always liked to draw ever since I was a kid.
Second, even though I wanted to be an animator, when I was in school it was much faster for me to m

CGI Zelda Movie Shut Down... 6 Years Ago
Imagi Animation Studios, the company responsible for the CGI Astro Boy and TMNT movies, made a 1 minute test reel to show to Nintendo trying to pitch for a Legend of Zelda movie. The pitch made in 2007 was ultimately turned down by Nintendo, likely due to Nintendo being extraordinarily squeamish about letting an American animation company handle one of their properties after the abysmal failure of the live action Super Mario Bros movie. And hopes that this project would ever be looked at again were rendered null and void when the american branch of the animation company was shut down back in 2010.
But the good news for everyone is that you can see this

Perceived Rivalry Hatred
Basically it works like this: You say you dislike something and immediately get attacked by people who either defend the thing you said you disliked, or accuse you of being a supporter of it's supposed rival (whether this has any basis in reality or not). It also works on things you like, things you're indifferent to, or anything really. EVERYTHING has a supposed default rival. Movies, TV, Video Games, Ideologies, Words, Phrases, etc. Everything.

Say what you will about Anita Sarkeesian, you gotta admit that people do take note of what she says for good or ill. In this piece of news, it's for the good.
As you might already know, in her latest video she outlined a simple "damsel frees herself" video game. Nothing too spectacular but it showcased how one can subvert the typical trope and make a strong female character out of it. While many were quick to criticize her for not making the game herself (given her kickstarter success), others took a more direct approach and actually made a game in 2 weeks.
The game is called "Sorry Mario Bros," and the plot is that Princess Peach decides to rescues herself by leaving Bowser's castle in world 8-4. You progress right to left through familiar, but slightly altered, original Mario Bros. worlds working your way backwards towards world 1-1. Along the way you can take detours and use Peach's float ability to reach hidden areas and collect "princess coins."
The Comic Is a LieDo I really need to do this? Do I really have to write a journal explaining that my SYAC comics are mostly made up? Really, internet, is this a thing now?The Comic Is a Lie2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So yeah... just so we're all perfectly clear on things... the majority of my comics are made up. While they might have an element of truth or be based on a real event, it's all still rearranged, altered, or just plain fabricated to make a joke.
Here's a good rule of thumb: If I don't expressly say it's based on a real thing in my description, you should just assume that it's made up and fake. And even if I do say it's based on a real thing, chances are it's been altered and re-arranged to make the joke work. So really, you should just assume that everything that happens in SYAC is entirely fictional. I know having an "avatar" that in some respects represents me and my opinions can cloud things but still, just assume that everything is made up. Any references to haters, any frustrations a character is going through,

To me those men didn't mean that much, they never brought me anything.
On November 28th, 2 weeks ago, somebody very close to me passed away. Somebody who also meant a lot to this group.
Danny Wells, was a Canadian movie and television actor and voice actor. He taught me a lot, he was a childhood hero of mine and he was a big part of my growing love for Luigi.
Danny Wells, born Jack Westelman was the actor who played Luigi in the old school Television show of the Super Mario Bros 'Super Show'. He played both Luigi in the live action segments and also voiced the animated character.
Rest In Peace Danny Wells, at the very least, you meant something to me...to this group.

If this is old news, forgive me I just found it and thought it was hilarious:
Level 5 Studios (the company most noted for the Professor Layton series) was having their 15th year anniversary this week. Along with discounted game prices, part of the celebration was to make a wallpaper featuring player voted favorite characters. Unfortunately for Level 5, the voting of these characters quickly came under attack by trolls who hijacked the results and submitted obscure minor characters instead. The final list included the airplane from Aero Porter in first place with 46,000 votes.
Rather than toss out the votes and start over, Level 5 just rolled with it and produced the wallpaper with the skewed results anyway. You can download the wallpaper here: http://www.level5.co.jp/15th/vote/
I think what I love most about this is that they actually went with the airplane. The inanimate object from the Aero Porter games gets TOP BILLING on the poster. That's hilari
Sucker PunchedThis is a LONG one so settle in!Sucker Punched1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I’ve been re-watching Sucker Punch a lot lately and have been humorously admiring how misunderstood it is. It’s almost comical how a movie that comes right out and says “I am about the negative connotations surrounding the constant sexual abuse and objectification that women endure,” gets reviewed and dismissed as “just another pandering male geek fantasy of objectified sexualized women.”
I could write a book on the various subtle metaphors and messages Sucker Punch visualizes, but I don’t wanna bore you all. But to demonstrate what I mean let’s just dissect a small piece of it.
Before we begin we need to understand two things. First, Director Zach Snyder made the film with the express intent of it being a feminist critique on geek culture. If you don’t believe me, hear it from his own words: http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/features/interview-zack-snyder-on-the-sexuality-and-world

The trailer to "Equestria Girls" (the humanized MLP spinoff film) finally was released today. Aaaannnd everyone's freaking out. Again.
You know, it actually looks pretty decent. Bronies... please understand: I know you're a major unexpected demographic for the show. I know you enjoy seeing shout-out's become canon within the show, and appreciate how the creators do little things here and there for you. But... the show isn't made for you. This is not Cartoon Network and the target demographic isn't 25 year olds in college. You're a nice addition to the target demographic of little girls, but you are not the driving force behind MLP.
I don't want this to sound mean, but it needs to be said. This is where it becomes very important to understand the fine line between being a fan of the show and thinking that because you've invested so much energy into the show that you're entitled to things.
I'm sure the movie won't be as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It honest

The latest details for the Xbox One show that pretty much every aspect of gaming culture that we hate has been incorporated into it. Needing to check in every 24 hours to make sure you've legally bought a game? Check. Not able to bring games over to a friend's house unless your friend ALSO buys the game? Check. Forcing game stores to sign an agreement to pay Microsoft a large percentage of the used sale fee? Check. More motion controls? Check. Inability to let independent-developers make games on their system? Check. Not backwards compatible? Check. Stronger emphasis on watching TV and movies than playing games? Check. Seriously, this is like a check list of all the worse possible things to include in a gaming console.

I meant to say I've come to the obvious conclusion that there's far too much hate on the internet. Harley Quinn Contest
In case you haven't heard yet, DC is holding a contest to hire fresh young artists to help work on the new Harley Quinn series. http://www.dccomics.com/node/305151 This is fantastic news for a lot of artists, as "breaking in" to the big comic book companies can be extraordinarily difficult to do and this helps level the playing field. However, the way they've chosen to hold the contest is to have everyone submit 4 illustrations based on 4 separate scripts... all of which depict Harley Quinn as suicidal and trying to kill herself "comically."
Now first off, I get the fact that Harley Quinn is part of the "Suicide Squad," and that these illustrations are likely poking fun at that. However I feel that fact falls on it's face since the term "Suicide Squa
Yoshi StoryI have to admit, I am incredibly surprised by the overwhelming success and appreciation of the recent comic "A Yoshi Story"Yoshi Story1 year ago in Personal More Like This
In less than 24 hours the comic has generated almost 200,000 views and been featured on a number of different outlooks including DA's tumblr, facebook, ICanHasCheezeburger, Memebase, and more.
As much as I would like to take credit for the comic, I want people to give proper credit due to DA user Commisar-Erdno for writing the story in the first place. All I did was draw it. Credit for the concept and execution goes to Erdno. So please be sure to check their DA page out and tell them how much you loved the comic.
It's also rather fun to see the comic being used as a Rorschach Test of people's optimism/pessimism. Either way, it's still fun to see everyone's interpretations of the story.
So thank you everyone for your support. I really did not expect a comic about a Yoshi sacrificing itself to save Mario to become so popular and loved by s
Being Critical =/= HateLooks like I need to remind people about this again, as yesterday I got several comments in a row from people who assumed that me being critical about something automatically translated into me outright hating it. I don't know how to stress this enough but that's not the case... You can be critical of stuff you like and not hate it. Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.
For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

Mitt Romney and BroniesMITT: A Netflix ReviewMitt Romney and Bronies1 year ago in Personal More Like This
In case you haven’t seen it yet, there’s a new Netflix made documentary about Mitt Romney that’s becoming popular. It’s touted as being a documentary that shows “the true Mitt” by using intimate behind the scenes footage from during his campaign.
Unfortunately what hinders the movie is it’s complete detachment from Mitt Romney’s political agenda in favor of showing how much his family loves him and vice versa. Look, you don’t need to convince me that Mitt Romney was probably a stand up dad and husband. What you need to convince me is that Romney’s political beliefs weren’t actually DAMAGING to our country, and that’s entirely left out of this documentary.
So I have a hard time feeling sympathy for the man as he’s crushed by Obama in the election because I remember what his policies were and how awful they would have been for our country had he been elected. There is o

I really appreciated this week's Jimquisition episode because it highlighted a mentality that I, myself, have dealt with. The whole concept that "you need a thick skin" to "deal with criticism" online and that you, as a creator, are solely responsible when you finally snap and "break" and say or do something stupid after years of constant pounding and hate lobbed at you. I've been in that situation, many times, and it's nice to hear from another creator that this is a thing not isolated to myself, and more importantly for standing up for the creator's side.
If you'd like to watch the video you can do so here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/7831-Go-Fish?utm_source=latest&utm_medium=index_carousel&utm_campaign=all I think it presents a nice counterpoint to the usual "Phil Fish is just an asshole" remarks you frequently see online in response to the controversy surrounding him

Like many of you, I was privy to the ongoing “takedown” of this latest Disney cartoon through various forums and blogs online. And this is a spectacular reason why you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. So much of the pre-release hatred was focused on trivial things (some of which had been changed without the community knowing for a long time) and on pointing out minor technical errors that I kinda feel like people were WANTING to hate this movie from the start. (And full disclosure here: I even participated in some of that pre-release hate.)
To be honest, after I saw it I felt kinda “meh” about it. But the more I’ve let it sink in and the more I’ve thought about it after the fact, the more I began to appreciate it (Which is always good). It’s better to have a movie start off meh and become a favorite over time than one which y
