Comic Composition GeekoutSPECIAL GUEST STAR (against his knowledge) IS :iconandrew-ross-maclean:Comic Composition Geekout3 years ago in Personal More Like This
You guys know when I get really excited about art geekery, I JUST CAN'T KEEP IT IN. I also feel like composition is a really hard thing to learn, and all you can really do is try to learn "what is good" in composition, and then try to find examples until you can recognize it. In addition, composition for comics is extra hard because you have to worry about the overall flow of the page as well as the composition of each individual panel.
So I was doing my spring cleaning of my message center and came on some new comic pages he uploaded, all of which are awesome, but take a particular look at this one:
This page is AMAZING. I started watching this guy for his slick style and stayed for his crazy composition skills, and this page makes a particularly good example because his work is so clean and straight-forward, there's not a lot of noodling to distract from the motion lines.

Invisibility and the end of EarthHello and welcome to the newest round of: random musings of an astrophysicist.Invisibility and the end of Earth3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Invisibility is a popular ability in science fiction and fantasy. There is magical invisibility via spells, potions or cloaks. And there is technologically achieved invisibility in many forms. But if we were to ask the laws of physics, what would actually happen if we did turn invisible?
First, there are two ways to achieve true invisibility. Either light goes through you without any contact, or it goes around you.
And that's the problem. If light doesn't interact with you, then how do you see? No light falls into your eyes either, so you are blind. An interaction always works both ways. The world is getting no visual information that you are there, and in turn you get no information about the world.
But it is worse. If you were to turn perfectly invisible right now, you would pretty much explode and the particles that made up your body would fall into the Earth like little ghosts.

Training your eye is very important. To take your photography to the next level and grow as an artist, you need to know what looks good, have an open mind and build your own style.
Point at the first thing that attracts your attention (often being the brightest point in the image)
Try to mentally trace the path your eye takes around the image (it's like connecting the dots in order to discover the story, in this case)
Has the photographer used the rule of thirds? Or a different type of placing the elements in the image?
Has the photographer shot from his eye level? Or chose a different point of view?
What is the photographer trying to transmit with the image?
How has the photographer used the environment to tell the story?
How has the photographer used light?
Why does the image work?
Does the image evoke an emotional response in the viewer's eye?
From the above, which can be appli
5 Ways to Avoid Being DiminishedThere's a discussion brewing in comics about artists being more diminished as of late--that readers, reviewers, and publishers are focusing too much on writers rather than the artists who draw the book. I agree it's happening, but I'm not sure it's worth sounding an alarm over. I never felt diminished, but maybe I'm part of the exception. Maybe it's because I'm an artist and a writer.5 Ways to Avoid Being Diminished2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Either way, I do have a few thoughts on what artists can do to pull themselves out from under the rug.
1. DON'T DRAW LIKE A COG.
If you conform to a "house style", then you're at higher risk of being treated like an interchangeable cog in the comics machine. Yes, you're more likely to get consistent work, but you won't stand out as much. Therefor you'll be sought after less by big name writers, you're less likely to make a lasting impression on reviewers and readers, and you'll have a harder time getting raises (12 others draw like you and for less money).
I also suggests inking yourself if it helps. Penc
HEY GUYS SUPER HUGE NEWSSINCE THE DAWN OF MY COMICS CAREER (roughly five years ago) I've amassed tons of personal comic pages. And I'm not talking about the current 216 pages of Sakana, I'm talking about ALL THE OTHER COMIC PAGES I've managed to accrue in that time.HEY GUYS SUPER HUGE NEWS3 years ago in Personal More Like This
And I've been thinking for a while that I'd like to bring all those together in a big ol' fun book of stupid one-shots, minicomics, class projects, and series that never really got off the ground, or are still waiting for that fabled day far in the future where I will have the free time and financial stability to just sit down and draw every single comic I ever thought up.
SO ANYWAYS the big news is that I've begun pulling old pages out from under my bed, and leafing through my old portfolios, and scouring my external harddrive for anything that I've ever done that even resembles a comic (and some are pretty janky, lemme tell you) because I want to PUT THEM ALL IN A BIG BOOK. AND SELL IT.
If you're a fan of my webcomic Sakana, perhaps you'd like t
Free Artwork is not something I doAnd you shouldn't either.Free Artwork is not something I do2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I only direct your attention here because I receive a LOT of requests of for free artwork, whether it be logos, character design and sometimes even graphic novels all intended to be for free.
I'm a working professional making a living with my art. So clearly I won't be doing art for free, when it's my job to do it. BUT, I also support the idea that even artists who work freelance or even just as a hobby shouldn't work for free.
Please check out this video by Stephen Silver who explains this way better than I ever could

When he died last April at age 87, he had for a half century been a candidate for “world’s greatest living writer.”
Author of short stories and novels, including his masterpiece, One Hundred Years of Solitude, he received the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 1972 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in Literature in 1982. He was a fierce critic of the United States and had a friend in admirer Fidel Castro, with whom he sometimes shared notes on his works-in-progress. My Two cents on Portfolio ReviewsYou know, I see quite a bit of portfolio on a regular basis, and even more so when I go to comic con and CTN.My Two cents on Portfolio Reviews3 years ago in Personal More Like This
This time around was the same thing, I saw quite a few portfolios. Some good ones and some that miss the mark.
There were a few in particular that caught my eye.. a few extremely good ones, and a few that just didn't work, and I wanted to try and share my opinions about portfolios in general.
This is just my point of view, based on MY experience and definitely not a definitely law, rule, or "must do". Just what I noticed in many student's and young professional's portfolios.
The first thing that strikes me is how similar portfolios can be from one student to another..I can almost always tell when one student is from Art Center, San Jose State, Otis, Sheridan or any other major school. It's a good thing and a bad thing. Mainly a bad thing though
Just a few personal thoughts on portfolios since I just came back from comic con and saw a ton over there.
Your portfolio should be a r

For a very long time I have been searching for peace and purpose in my life with no success, until recently when I had an encounter with scary panic attacks which in the end helped me to change the course in my life and I started seeing things differently and more positively.
I have a very special project that I need your help with. This project requires me to get a tool (in fact it is an instrument) with which I will be working and helping others. I am opening a fundraising so I can accomplish my life's mission.
In return I want to give something to you for supporting me on this road. During the fundraising I will upload tutorials with explanations on how I paint, use colors, paint hair, how I approach light and shade etc.
You can get high resolution images from me (except commission work) for donations, you just need to contact me via e-mail email@example.com.
And if you wish to support me by giving little o
PEAS Method to Artistic Self-improvementI came up with the PEAS method ("PEAS" stands for: Practice, Experiment, Ask for suggestions, & Study the world around you) about 5 years ago. In that time, I've seen significant changes in my own art and in the art of others! I figured that it's time to whip up a journal and share the PEAS method again.PEAS Method to Artistic Self-improvement4 years ago in Personal More Like This
These are the same concepts that I shared in the journal "How did you get so good at drawing?" which I posted about 5 years ago:
PEAS METHOD TO ARTISTIC SELF-IMPROVEMENT:
I my opinion and from experience, there are 4 things you can do to evolve as an artist...
Practice - it's been said time and time again that "practice makes perfect". They're right, but there need to be a few other factors to make it work! You can repeat the same thing over and over... however that will only improve your ability to repeat a certain skill. To truly improve, something NEW nee

The Journal Feature ChallengeI love featuring art in my journal on a regular basis. There is so much great art around here that I find fascinating and I wish more people could see it. It's a great way to discover new artists and find inspiration. You can always browse and search for art on your own, but in my experience, is a lot more effective to search through collections curated by artists with interests similar to yours, as in their favourites or features in their journals. Besides, is also a great way to show your appreciation for artists you admire! And usually artists do appreciate the promotion when you let them know. The Journal Feature Challenge3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
