Being Unscientific with SRSmithWho doesn't love science fiction?Being Unscientific with SRSmith11 months ago in Literature Features More Like This
If you just said "me," keep reading—you'll change your mind by the end of this article. (If you don't, I reserve the right to send a drone to your house. Isn't living in The Future great?!) As you'll see, science fiction goes beyond funny aliens and laser beams that conveniently miss. Some have even argued that, without science fiction, the Internet wouldn't have happened, and then we'd all be...outside right now. Quel horreur!
SRSmith has been a mainstay of the dA literature community for a long time, and he showcases other awesome dA writers on his flash fiction project,365tomorrows.
What is "science fiction"?
In my opinion, Science Fiction is any story that uses present or future science or technology as a key component, or where it provides the required underlying fabric on which the story is built. Future science or technology is speculative by nature, a

Comic Composition GeekoutSPECIAL GUEST STAR (against his knowledge) IS :iconandrew-ross-maclean:Comic Composition Geekout2 years ago in Personal More Like This
You guys know when I get really excited about art geekery, I JUST CAN'T KEEP IT IN. I also feel like composition is a really hard thing to learn, and all you can really do is try to learn "what is good" in composition, and then try to find examples until you can recognize it. In addition, composition for comics is extra hard because you have to worry about the overall flow of the page as well as the composition of each individual panel.
So I was doing my spring cleaning of my message center and came on some new comic pages he uploaded, all of which are awesome, but take a particular look at this one:
This page is AMAZING. I started watching this guy for his slick style and stayed for his crazy composition skills, and this page makes a particularly good example because his work is so clean and straight-forward, there's not a lot of noodling to distract from the motion lines.

A Mysterious Machine Appears: The Hunt for Gems!A Mysterious Machine Appears: The Hunt for Gems!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Welcome everyone, to the first contest in a long while! BlackWing and I are to host this event, and maybe to put a little artistic effort in it ourselves (but of course it wouldn't allow us to win, that wouldn't be very fair, would it?)
Here are the details for the event!
You are to draw one of your characters, whether it be a creature from Life Crystals or an original character, and they are sent by the human creators of the Skitters to help search for precious gems. These gems can be rubies, sapphires, emeralds, topaz, jade and even diamond! Find the prettiest gem you lay your eyes on! For the record, this gem will lead to the Skitter you want. If you want a blue or red gem for your Skitter, then have your character look for a Sapphire, Ruby, or any gem that has those colors. You can even search for rarer gems that I haven't stated yet.
You can even have your character search for a particular type of stone or raw steel for the body.
Next, you can put a little (or l
DA's Insular Taste PhenomenonIt's been quite a while since I wrote a preachy "THINK ABOUT YO' ART"-type journal, and some of my newer watchers may not know that this is a particular(ly annoying) habit of mine. This is a subject I've had on my mind for quite some time for a number of reasons, and it's recently coalesced into a semi-soluble form so here we go. (As an aside- this journal does have some recycled ideas from a previous post of mine, but obviously I hadn't really said everything I wanted to on the subject.)DA's Insular Taste Phenomenon3 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's no mystery that I love this website. I came in at the tail end of the pre-critique wonder years, when the internet discovered and exploited that, yes, we don't always produce the highest quality art here. There's a lot of unpleasantness directed towards DeviantArt. At RISD, I made a point to never mention that I had an account here, because of the looks of disgust I would get haha and people would think about me differently. It was
Sipping tea with your Muse Only by fostering a facility with the vocabulary of your artistic medium of choice, can you begin to really free yourself to be open to being creative with it.Sipping tea with your Muse1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The size of that vocabulary is another matter, and that’s about growth, improvement and development. These are important as well, and intricately linked to creativity, in parallel (more on that in a future article). But first let’s talk simply about the genesis aspect of art.
Remember when you were in high school, doodling in the margins of your notebooks? Ballpoint pen and edges of blue-lined notebooks, with half an ear listening to the lesson of the day? There was a familiarity in that setting, and ease that you moved through when you sketched these throwaway doodles. Every once in a while you’d accidentally make one that you’d really like, and you’d save that scrap of paper with notes on American History melding into the lines of a drawing of your D&D charac

my thoughts on homophobiaHello everyone! I know this topic is very controversial and touchy, but I've been thinking about it for a while and wanted to share my thoughts, but feel free to ignore this little rant if you don't want to read it.my thoughts on homophobia2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been thinking to my self lately about homophobia and, frankly, how stupid it is. As a Christian, I feel like I should be against people being gay, and to be completely honest, I used to be homophobic; all my life I've heard that its a "sin" to be gay. But after thinking for a long time, I realized just how closed-minded and inconsiderate it is to be homophobic.
Gay people don't want to rape your wife, burn down your house, or eat your first-born child; they just want to love.
I find it extremely ironic that there are whole groups whose soul purposes is to prevent people from loving. Doesn't that sound stupid?
And what is their reason? because it is a sin? Well, I've read the Bible and there isn't just one sin, theres a whole bunch
HEY GUYS SUPER HUGE NEWSSINCE THE DAWN OF MY COMICS CAREER (roughly five years ago) I've amassed tons of personal comic pages. And I'm not talking about the current 216 pages of Sakana, I'm talking about ALL THE OTHER COMIC PAGES I've managed to accrue in that time.HEY GUYS SUPER HUGE NEWS2 years ago in Personal More Like This
And I've been thinking for a while that I'd like to bring all those together in a big ol' fun book of stupid one-shots, minicomics, class projects, and series that never really got off the ground, or are still waiting for that fabled day far in the future where I will have the free time and financial stability to just sit down and draw every single comic I ever thought up.
SO ANYWAYS the big news is that I've begun pulling old pages out from under my bed, and leafing through my old portfolios, and scouring my external harddrive for anything that I've ever done that even resembles a comic (and some are pretty janky, lemme tell you) because I want to PUT THEM ALL IN A BIG BOOK. AND SELL IT.
If you're a fan of my webcomic Sakana, perhaps you'd like t

As such, I'm going to make one complete, constantly updated directory here.
Feel free to make your requests here as well. Just leave me the name of the series and the character (they have to be chibi though, they fit better in the folders lol). I actually prefer to do sets as opposed to singles, so don't be shy in requesting more than one. I reserve the right to decline (though I likely won't without good reason.) I can't guarantee they'll get done quickly or at all, but no harm in trying, eh?

KICKSTARTER, VERKAMI, INDIEGOGO....
This is an example of what I would like to do; Many of you have already read about it, and gave me your support. I'm telling it again.
I'M SERIOUSLY THINKING ON TO START A CROWDFUNDING
This is it. I want to start a crowdfunding project. I am looking for good printing and shipping prizes that offers me good quality. I'm waiting for an answer from a very cool guy I have meet who is going to help me.
I think that my crowdfunding project will be an artbook. But I don't want to stay just there. I mean, the most important thing is that I want to enjoy every page I fill. Every line I do and every color I choose.
If I don't feel I'm spending a good time doing this, I should not do it. And this kind of mentallity is what makes me want to do this. Spending a super good time, and have one of the better experiences in m
Just Tell the Fucking StoryOkay, so I saw this journal that contained a number of tips, including a detailed section on 'show don't tell,' and I had an epiphany. There was an 'Oh' and everything so you know it's legit.Just Tell the Fucking Story3 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
For a while now I have wondered why amateur writers write the most mind-numbingly long descriptions that I could not care about even a little (yes, my attention span is short, why'd you think I put in so many GIFs? but anyway, I'm a bit atypical there). I mean, I don't want the 'flames of burning searing pain of the aching broken heart' all up in my grill. I'd genuinely prefer a 'he hated her after the break up.' That's all I need to know about that? Good. Move on.
And that's the 'oh' moment: when people tell you to show not tell, they always fail to mention 'pacing.'
Look, there are times when it's best to convey a mood. His trembling fingers reach for the full glass, her voice an angry buzz in the back of his mind--I'd consider that a reasonable establishing shot. But if you're halfway t

Back in action with a couple of EventsHello everyone, Sorry for the long long Hiatus, had quite a few things to sort out before today. with the new year and all the late work I had to finish, I'm still behind with some commissions but hopefully with my new daily schedule set up, i will catch up on those as well, so if you are on such a list and been waiting for a long while, please give me just a bit more time, i will catch up on these late work. @__@Back in action with a couple of Events2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I started a daily monster sketch, so hopefully this will help make up for my lack of action for the past months. please feel free to join in on this excercise as well, i care less about the quality about these works, the important thing for me is keep doing one each day, hopefully to do this for a whole year. =] I think it will be a big dedication and accomplishment. =]
another Event i want to start is a contest of sorts, which would have two parts. the first part would be asking you to submit your original character for a random selection, this can be an image or description

I dont believe in mentors, not all mentors are qualified to teach, they can misguide you sometimes. If you have a mentor it can turn you into his clone, i had seen tons of great artists that their technique wasnt good but they were more unique and after having mentor, their style lose uniqueness. Because be honest, we copy what we like, and usually we ask for mentors of people that style will enjoy the most.
For example you go and learn to play guitar with Slash, you will master the guitar at rock, but you if you wanna learn country, Slash wont teach you that, your hands will have the skills but you will have to start country from zero, and country its your style.
Sooner or later the technique of the mentor will consume you. Because errors are the things that
(UPDATED) See you in San Francisco and AOD!Okay, crazy stuff! Apparently there was a huge misunderstanding and I was just informed by my publisher that I DO have a table at Anime On Display http://www.aodsf.org/events/exhibits/ I will be in the Dealer's Room at table X. However, I ALSO have a table inside the 1st floor of the Japan Town Mall near the Kinokuniya bookstore. I already promised people who don't have a badge for AOD that they can hang out at the table near the bookstore but I also have to be inside the AOD dealer's room as well...(UPDATED) See you in San Francisco and AOD!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Since I can't be at 2 places at once, I will take turns visiting both tables:
On Saturday the 16th, I will be at the table near the Kinokuniya from 10AM to 2PM, then I will be at AOD's dealer's room from 2-6:30 PM.
On Sunday the 17th, I will be at AOD from 10 AM to 2PM, then at Kinokuniya from 2PM to 6PM.
All the posters and books will be sold at both tables so it doesn't matter where you visit. But if you want to get stuff signed or just hang out, please go follow

5 LevelsI've spoken as guest speaker a number of times over the years (come visit me at SCAD Atlanta in January). While I'm not the best or most patient teacher, I think my strength is my pragmatic and blunt approach to the business side of comics. In order to help the students think of a "5 YEAR PLAN" (more on that in an upcoming post), I'll often break down the different page rate levels of comic book artists as a way to help analyze the playing field of our industry. If there's a ladder to success, what's wrong with defining each rung? I imagine such a breakdown helpful for moving up in most any industry, not just comics.5 Levels4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Here are the 5 LEVELS of comic artists as I see them--NOT based on talent but on page rates, popularity, and the prestige of the titles the artist works on. You might define them differently or have more than just 5, but I find that less-is-more when it comes to people being able to retain information.
Snippy: poem of doomI've a lot of time on my hands living inside the whale and such. ....So, today I wrote a poem about Captain:Snippy: poem of doom3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Oh Captain, my Captain! I say it to mock,
You're lucky as hell but to me you're a c***.
Please spare me the missions, I've no head for heights,
Balloons and big lists lead me only to blights.
Evading the probes of an alien race,
Then having to witness your > : ( angry face...
But what choice have I? I'm involved in these fights,
With Cancerous space-monsters full of red sprites,
And Lemonade weirdos and God knows what next,
Just how can you stay so serene and unvexed?
What price should I pay for your simple delights,
Be eaten by whales after soiling my whites?
I know you won't listen, but you'll come unstuck,
And one of these days you'll run right out of luck,
Your empire will fall, and your ego besides,
It's karma for sure, like the turn of the tides,
And then I will lol, sitting in my own muck,
Coz after all this I just won't
