refusing requests is not stingy ('tiny' rant)I think I gave my two cents on requests already longer time ago, don't remember, I'm old.... but recent activities (actually reading a journal that called people who don't do requests greedy and stingy) made me realize I might take a moment to remind people of a few things regarding requests ... and how I personally handle them.refusing requests is not stingy ('tiny' rant)2 months ago in Personal More Like This
basically, requests are a cool thing, it's free art done by people out of friendship, out of pure joy of sharing or out of good will... or maybe even boredom or the hope to increase popularity and/or reputation - all of these are good reasons but it should never be forgotten that it's always the artist's choice whether they do requests or not.
the good side of requests:
requests are great if you are new to DA - when you don't know many people and are likewise unknown, opening requets will attrackt people to come and check you out, might even order artwork from you. If you draw for them they'll appreciate it (if they're not spoiled brats) and that

Wanna kill yourself? Imagine this.
You come home from school one day. You've had yet another horrible day. You're just ready to give up. So you go to your room, close the door, and take out that suicide note you've written and rewritten over and over and over You take out those razor blades, and cut for the very last time. You grab that bottle of pills and take them all. Laying down, holding the letter to your chest, you close your eyes for the very last time.
A few hours later, your little brother knocks on your door to come tell you dinners ready. You don't answer, so he walks in. All he sees is you laying on your bed, so he thinks you're asleep. He tells your mom this. Your mom goes to your room to wake you up. She notices something is odd. She grabs the paper in your hand and reads it. Sobbing,

Basically what this contest is, is a design contest. For the last few months, I've been designing my "sona". I've finally settled on a design (anatomy wise), though I just can't seem to think up some markings. So because of this, I decided to hold a small-ish contest. Mostly since I never have before, and it sounds fun!
Here's the Design I have so far:
Now, without further adieu, here's a quick overview of what this contest is about.

The Meaning of 'No' and Where to Go From ThereFor my AP Language and Composition class, we were supposed to write an essay on a controversial topic. I chose Rape Culture. The Meaning of 'No' and Where to Go From There2 years ago in Personal More Like This
An important line that seems to be blurred when it comes to sexual advances and the act of sex itself is the idea of "when does no mean no". If a woman is blackout drunk yet still asks for sex, even though she might not remember it in the morning, surely it isn't against her will? Or if a girlfriend says no, maybe she's just playing hard to get, right? Wrong. No matter the innuendos and no matter the situation, 'no' does in fact mean 'no'. Regardless of how drunk the person is or what they are wearing, there is never an excuse for rape or an 'invitation' for sexual assault. But the question is where did this mindset begin and why is it acted upon so often and without reproof?
The catalyst and the enabler of rape is much more complex than just a man's lust: the crux of the issue lies in the idea of "Rape Culture". Rape culture is a society in which people of all a

Bella Swan from the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer
I was in disbelief that I'd just explained my dreary life to this bizarre, beautiful boy who may or may not despise me.
Sorry guys, I cannot work on this list anymore. I recently realized that its pretty much pointless. This character, this wonderful well written masterpiece is the epitome of female writting. Who cares that she isn't animated? She trumps all those cell shaded bimbos to oblivion.
What can I say about Bella Swan that has no been said? She's not the prettiest girl around but for some reason all the boys from her school want to date her. The reason is obvious though; Bella Swan is an enigmatic individual with the most adorable tics and stutters. Also, her aloof outlook on life and disdain for others is so complex especially when the gorgeous Edward Cullen comes to the picture. She feels like she doesn't deserve him, which is a noble and modest act in itself. Whenever we are in a relat

The thing with popularityThats what decides if we get commissions or not.The thing with popularity1 year ago in Personal More Like This
It decided if you have a good fame, or rather bad.
It can help you in getting a job, or maybe even make a job giver look negative at you.
Especially here on deviantArt. Well for being honest, dA is no good place for "real" artists and designers.
They may get some honey around their mouth, but there is nearly never useful critique.
But places like deviantArt can (if you do it right) help you to become more popular... well but usually only around the web.
Another fact is, it doesnt matter how many people watch, fav or comment your art. Most time you have the same problem as fresh or studying artist : money.
And if you are going to ask for it in commissions, your big fans wont take one. Why? Because they are mostly kids. Not earning money.
But then, there are also artist, with nearly the same skill, same amount of watchers... but who get their commission slots filled within minutes when the artist shouts "they are open!".

I was in the kitchen, chilling on the chair. It was 3:30. Dinner wasn't until a few hours. I didn't want to wait that long, I'm already hungry now. Still, at least I'll have something to look forward to. Slender came in a few minutes later and opened the fridge. I think he's having a snack. Maybe I should have one before dinner. He pulled out a leg of child and bit off a chunk, which sickened me. Just the sound of the bones crunching made my white skin crawl. It sent a chill in my spine as I watched him eat that vile rotting flesh.
"Slender, do you really have to eat that in front of me?" I gagged.
"Get a stronger stomach Splendor and deal with it, alright? Maybe then you can appreciate it as a delicacy." He replied.
Soon, we both heard a familiar noise that startled me, and we quickly knew what it was. My stomach had made itself known after the insult. I frowned and my eyes got sad. Slender just tisked at me as I looked at him with a puppy dog face, begging fo

But what was I expecting from here anyway.
I mean... You don't just go around bidding very high on things as a JOKE.
And then be all like "omg it was a joke I was not expecting to win I can't pay I only have 2 points".
It screws up the whole bidding, making it inaccurate for the other bidders. And it's also TERRIBLY annoying for the seller, having to let things go for much lower bids after.
And two other things while I'm here:
Don't tell people their prices are too expensive.
Don't tell people to not buy things because it's not worth it.
Man, I'm tired of this.
And now don't tell me to sell things on FA instead, I'm trying. But I'm still new on there and it's very hard to sell things, it's just not worth it for me at the moment.
SQUEE! MY LUNCH!!!!!!!!!!So me and my crush were sitting outside on a rock near our school and my best friend Taylor was with us. She was pacing around because it's kind of awkward for her (I still feel bad about that) Then Kansas came over ((girl in my class)). She asked me if I had anything to eat. I told her I might. I pulled out my strawberries and handed them to her. (((it's not like I would've eaten 'em anyway))) I just assumed she would leave after that...she didn't. She asked if I wanted her to leave. I didn't want to be rude so I told her it was fine. I talked to Taylor a few times ((((during the amount of time we were there)))), not often, as she was really far away.SQUEE! When I had eaten something I asked Andrew [my crush] if he wanted to walk around. He did. We walked around the school. We conversed and what not. Then, at the awkward part of most conversations where it fell silent, Andrew said "Hey Makenna." I looked over at him and smiled. He looked away nervously then looked back up. "Wanna go o
some advice to artists that take commissions-okay so i don't know it kind of concerns me that a lot of people both here, da, wzl, fa, etc don't really know?? like?? basic artist etiquette... people aren't perfect but i see people do things you shouldn't be doing on a daily basis.some advice to artists that take commissions-10 months ago in Personal More Like This
doing these things is a surefire way to lose business- doing them repeatedly pretty much guarantees it after a while. so here's just some.. advice? i guess?
1. DON'T. SPEND. YOUR CUSTOMERS. MONEY.
seriously, if you ask for payment up front? your customers are trusting you to not steal from them (yes, you ARE stealing from them) by paying you up front and the moment you spend that money and can't give it back to them, you break that trust and it deters people from commissioning you in the future. and for me, oopsies doesn't cut it, it shows you aren't responsible enough, or have enough willpower to resist buying yourself something tempting- it definitely shows a lack of professionalism which is one thing a lot of commissioners seek from artists, be

FIVE LESSONS TO MAKE YOU THINK ABOUT THE WAY WE TREAT PEOPLE
First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady
During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"
Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.
"Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello".
I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy

Say what you will about Anita Sarkeesian, you gotta admit that people do take note of what she says for good or ill. In this piece of news, it's for the good.
As you might already know, in her latest video she outlined a simple "damsel frees herself" video game. Nothing too spectacular but it showcased how one can subvert the typical trope and make a strong female character out of it. While many were quick to criticize her for not making the game herself (given her kickstarter success), others took a more direct approach and actually made a game in 2 weeks.
The game is called "Sorry Mario Bros," and the plot is that Princess Peach decides to rescues herself by leaving Bowser's castle in world 8-4. You progress right to left through familiar, but slightly altered, original Mario Bros. worlds working your way backwards towards world 1-1. Along the way you can take detours and use Peach's float ability to reach hidden areas and collect "princess coins."
