Bring Out the Monsters!
About this time every year, ghastly fiends slink out from their hidden lairs. Horrendous beasts come forth to feast. Our nightmares spring to life. It's time to imprison these horrors safely into story form in our Fiendish Fan Fiction Contest! The theme for this contest is "Monsters and Creatures."
Halloween is fast approaching, so let's celebrate by breaking out the pens and pencils (or keyboards)!
The Literature Community ExperimentThis is a typical example of a BeccaJS shower pondering! The idea of this is to try and bring together as many people as possible all in one journal, but not for the sake of making a big number, but to encourage interaction and share useful tidbits. We often say the "literature community" has drifted apart over the past few years and this is just one attempt to try get people to come back together. It's a little hippy, perhaps a far-fetched idea, which is why I am calling it an "experiment". This could be successful and could be a complete fail- only you guys and your efforts can decide its fate! The Literature Community Experiment3 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
Wow! The response for this has been HUGE!!! Thank you so much all of you who have participated! Don't forget to add CRLiterature to your watch as well as replying to all these wonderful comments!

ScreamPrompt #32, February 2013So yeah, we're gonna do something love-related for this month... everyone loves or hates or is apathetic about Valentine's Day and I thought I already wrote this out but I didn't so I'm not prepared and it's the 1st already!ScreamPrompt #32, February 20132 years ago in Personal More Like This
But I have the idea...
Write a story about something you* love so much and want so bad but can't have it.
*You can be either yourself (1st person POV) or an MC (3rd person), either is fine.
Emphasis on the word "something".
IT CANNOT BE ANOTHER LIVING BEING.
IT HAS TO BE AN INANIMATE OBJECT OR CONCEPT!!
And give us a cool/funny/mind-blowingly wtf or sad reason why it is out of reach.
One, because it's my group (but it's here for you). There are, I'm sure, other prompt groups out there doing the same old thing because they are the same old thing. You're here because you want something else. Two, because writing about unrequited love is boring and I don't want to read it or su

When I'm looking through books in a brick and mortar store, I flip to the middle of a book for some reason and then put it on the shelf as if I ever had any intention of buying it (I don't know what compels me to buy a book anymore, to be honest). HOWEVER...
When I am here at deviantART, our supercool scrolling thumb feature allows me to see the first sentence of a story and make the determination on whether or not I want to continue reading. That said... I don't read much around here.
Boy, rhetoric is fun. We know why.
I don't judge a book by its cover but goddamn I will judge a story by its first line. It's called a "hook" for a reason. No one wants to read your story if your opening sentence is

Project EditHello there odd collection of people who read my ramblings!Project Edit2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I have an idea for a project. I was going through some of the really old pieces in my gallery recently that I haven't looked at in a long time, sorting through them and picking out some to edit and putting stuff into gallery folders to keep it organized and I had an idea. This would be the project:
-select a handful of pieces (3-5) that you have an eye to improve, and could use feedback on
-copy or move them into a gallery folder titled "project edit"
-visit like gallery folders of fellow deviants and leave feedback for them
-receive feedback on your own pieces
-consider the input of your fellow writers and tackle your edit.
-link me with finished pieces and I will select some to feature in subsequent "project edit" journals
-propagate this project by suggesting participation from fellow writers

Random talk with dad on car ride home from Sandiego.
Dad: You know that doctor in Star Trek? Star Wars? Whatever.
Me: Yeah I guess. Don't really watch Star Wars Trek.
Dad: Anyway, he has that device that scans and heals patients. I've never seen him help someone manually. Made me think that he's not really a doctor. That device is the doctor since it's doing all the work. The human just carries the device around. So anyone carrying that device is the doctor. Point: Your tools should not define you as an artist
Me: Awesome.... you watch Star Trek?
Dad: Yeah a few episodes when I first came to the states. I think it's a stupid show.

Encouragement for art studentsHey guys,Encouragement for art students9 months ago in Personal More Like This
Always being around students and teaching; there's something I've started to notice. I'm able to see which students push and have the strong desire to get better
and ones that draw with their mouth. I've stopped wasting time on the ones that draw with their mouth.
Most beginner students give up too easy. I see more potential in them then more advanced artists I draw with. There are some of my friends I stopped
calling out because I came to realize that they just kinda want to get better. ( I also don't want their attitude rubbing off on me.) They say they want to get better but it's clear that they just "kinda" want to get better. One guy asks a lot ," What are you working on? " As soon as I answer with explanation he always responds with, " Man I should be working on that." Then does nothing. Actually that's not true, he tells students the stuff I told him like he had figured it out. I don't mind becaus
More Critical Thoughts on Art School + Career PathHey everyone, thanks for the info on San Francisco for those who live in / near there. It's a big thing for me to still be thinking about, so I'll definitely be coming in for a visit before I make any final decisions.More Critical Thoughts on Art School + Career Path3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Elsewhere, I've been meaning to do a short rant dealing with how I feel retrospectively having gone to art school. I've talked about having gone before, and I've given some advice about choosing a school that's right for you should you choose to go. But you know, having been out for a couple years now, there are a few glaring problems I see not just from the school I attended, but apparently from many schools nationwide. And this deals with offering students a clear path of study for the often specialized career they are looking to get into. Areas of art such as (concept) design, animation, comics/storyboarding/sequential, full-time freelance, and all-over jobs related to working in industry-level professional positions, or in a teamwork-oriented studio setting. There's a group now - feel free to head over to TheTitlePage! We're still in set-up mode, so excuse the plainness for now.
Found Poetry Project - Titles as Art
One of my favorite things about the creative process is coming up with a good title. The title can make or break a piece; it can give context not provided in the piece itself, set a tone or mood, or just give that little extra something you can't put a name on.
You know I'm right. How many times have you stumbled into an ordinary piece with a beautifully creative title? And it's not something

In case you haven't already seen the first journal with a few answers, just click on this http://motionbooktool.deviantart.com/journal/Some-answers-to-some-recent-questions-363387248 to check them out!
To augment our first round of answers, here are a few more answers to recent questions:
Q1) Will users have to have coding knowledge/experience?
A1) Not at all! The tool is actually really simple for anyone to use with a great user interface (that we are refining as I write these words to make even better)!
Q2) Will the user be able to drop in sound assets, music, and sound effects into the motion books?
A2) Yes, it is very easy to implement .mp3 files with any sound you like and trigger them where you want in the story! You can also adjust volume intensity in the MBT, looping, and fade in / fade out of either a loop or a single play through of your sound.
Q3) If I were to go ahead and start drawing my comic, are there any technical aspects to my appr

The Different Categories of Art TheftIn a particular art-theft report fiasco that my friend had to experience, I decided to clarify what it means to be an art thief. This is a hot topic it seems. Everyone's on a red alert for art thieves these days:The Different Categories of Art Theft5 years ago in Art Features More Like This
At thieves come in different forms and motivations.
An art thief is someone who posts another artist's work and gives PROBABLE CAUSE for others to potentially ASSUME that they were the -original creator- of the artwork.
There are four types of thieves that fall into this definition. Let's call them Type A ("Photobucket/Google Image") thieves, Type B ("Altering") thieves, Type C ("Trace/Copy") thieves, and the most malicious kind, Type D ("Identity Theft") thieves.
A Type A Thief (aka. "Photobucket" Thief):
Comes to DeviantART thinking it's like Photobucket or MySpace, and they post their personal favorite Google Search images because they want to show off their fav

100 Drawing ChallengeI found a good way to practice with the tablet. I'm going to do the 100-drawing challenge that's been going around DA lately, and my personal requirement will be that I have to draw every picture with the tablet. Part of the rules are that I must post the rules here:100 Drawing Challenge9 years ago in Personal More Like This
"the point of this challenge is to test and improve your skill as an artist. After 100 pics who wouldn't be better. Please forgive me if this in any way excludes you from taking the challenge.
1.) Make 100 pics each pic having a theme listed below. Each pic should have ONE and only ONE theme to it, for it to count.
2.) No time limit so have fun
3.) The main picture should be drawn but not limited to. for all fair purposes, people are allowed to use their paint programs and photo shop to create the pic.
3a.) pics should be of own artistic ability. You may not edit photos, or break any other rules set out in the Da etiquette policy. Your pics can be anything from sketches and doodles to great
