Battle of the Brands - The Polymer Clay ConundrumMany of us start with one brand of polymer clay to start, and as we embrace the clays pros, we often eventually get used to the cons as well and work our way around them. But what if you knew which brand was right for you before you even touched the clay? Each polymer clay brand has many characteristics that make it distinct from other brands, so if you are looking for a specific trait in your clay, you might want to read on. Who knows, you might find something better then what you are working with right now.Battle of the Brands - The Polymer Clay Conundrum5 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I have personally tried every popular brand of polymer clay, and there are about five of them. There are also the polymer clays that require painting afterwards, like Studio by Sculpey as well as Super Sculpey... but I will not get into those.
The five most easily attainable clays are Fimo Classic, Fimo Soft, Sculpey III, Premo, and Kato Polyclay. Each have their own distinct characteristics, pros, cons, and baking times. These are my findings in point form:

Soft Mount Tutorial, Leg ArmaturesI finally took some time to make what (I hope) is a decent tutorial on how I make the leg armatures in my soft mounts, because I've had so many people asking me how I do it! And I don't know how to livestream stuff so I figured I would just videotape the process of working on my latest coyote, so that way I can just send the link to anyone who asks in the future. It's a long process, and I admit its not the most exciting video to watch, but I edited it down to a tolerable length, so hopefully you can learn a thing or two from it!Soft Mount Tutorial, Leg Armatures1 month ago in Personal More Like This
Important: Have you Notified your Stock Providers?Hi all,Important: Have you Notified your Stock Providers?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I just wanted to take a quick moment out from registering people for the Photomanipulation Tournament to bring to your attention an issue that is plaguing our community.
I think a lot of people think that, with the new Mentions system, there is no need to notify stock providers when you use their work. This is untrue! There are a few of reasons why you still need to notify them via note or comment, as per their preference, when you use their stock:
1. Some people turn their Mentions off because they get to be annoying. Thus, if you don't tell them, they may never see your gorgeous work.
2. Stock providers like to keep track of your work, and notes/comments help with that.
3. If your stock provider doesn't see your work, he/she can't give you love!

Things you need to include in your (first) note when ordering a commission
This is the info you need to include when ordering a commission, if anything is missing I will not be able to accept your commission.
1. Include your references! I prefer clear image references but if not. Please understand, this is to avoid errors that happen because references provided were vague or/or incomplete.
2. Your paypal email, at the moment I only accept commissions through paypal
3. What style/type of commission you are intending to purchase
I usually go through the notes in chronological order (reading the ones sent first). But I can only consider orders with all the information included. So even if you have sent a note first but you haven't got all th
More Critical Thoughts on Art School + Career PathHey everyone, thanks for the info on San Francisco for those who live in / near there. It's a big thing for me to still be thinking about, so I'll definitely be coming in for a visit before I make any final decisions.More Critical Thoughts on Art School + Career Path3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Elsewhere, I've been meaning to do a short rant dealing with how I feel retrospectively having gone to art school. I've talked about having gone before, and I've given some advice about choosing a school that's right for you should you choose to go. But you know, having been out for a couple years now, there are a few glaring problems I see not just from the school I attended, but apparently from many schools nationwide. And this deals with offering students a clear path of study for the often specialized career they are looking to get into. Areas of art such as (concept) design, animation, comics/storyboarding/sequential, full-time freelance, and all-over jobs related to working in industry-level professional positions, or in a teamwork-oriented studio setting. What do we need to shoot a Street picture?
1. A camera
Whatever kind of a camera is good. Either it is a ridiculously expensive rangefinder or an unbelievably cheap point and shoot compact. Either it shoots digital or it shoots film. Either it weighs a ton or it weighs few grams. ANY camera is fine as long as you have it with you.
2. A public place
This can be out in the streets or at the beach or inside a hotel's lounge or in a diner place or inside a supermarket or a mall or a school or whatever PUBLIC place. This public place must be visible in our picture. And things must be happening in this public place.
Exactly, people! We need people in candid situations. Definition of "candid" from Merriam-Webster's online dictionary: "subjects acting naturally or spontaneously without being posed" Definition of "candid" from Wikipedia: Candid photography is best described as un-
Street Photography - The OriginsAs we all know from the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding everything was invented by the Greeks. Well, ok we left some trivial things to be invented by the Chinese as well. What you may not know is that Street photography was also invented by the Greeks before Photography itself was even invented.Street Photography - The Origins3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Kairos is an ancient Greek word meaning the right or opportune moment or "the supreme moment". The Greeks believed the concept of Kairos is achieved when such a moment is grasped for otherwise the moment is gone and cannot be re-captured. According to ancient Greeks, Kairos was the god of the “fleeting moment.”
Interestingly the ancient Greeks had two words for time, chronos and kairos. While chronos is quantitative, kairos has a qualitative nature.
Does the above remind you of the "Decisive moment", the essence of Street Photography?
Contest!I am strangely fascinated by half finished pictures. I love the way that in amongst all the rough sketching there is a section of shaded, finished 3D image and it makes me think pencils are amazing.Contest!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
So! I decided to host a Half Finished Contest!
-the final piece must only be half finished, for example a girl in a dress where only the dress is finished and shaded and the girl is still sketch, or the girl is finished and the dress is sketched.
-But I don't want WIPs, I want pictures that look intentionally unfinished.
-It must be in a traditional medium.
Since this is the contest for PencilsPlusArtists I doubt it'll be particularly big, so the prizes will only be small.
1st Place: 3 Months Premium Membership
2nd Place: 600 points
3rd Place: 200 points
All of these will also recieve a llama badge and a feature on my page.
Send me a link to your picture or post it to the Competition folder here at PencilsPlusArtists. Feel free to ask any questions you'd like.

My visitor...EDIT 6: His name is Hektor now. Hahaha.... he will be coming back this evening and I sooooo hope that after a few days he will be coming back to my garden again so I can work on socializing him more and more. Keeping him inside now would not work... yet. But one thing after the other. He now has to learn how to trust me again and I promise to do my very best. If all this will work out and the allergy test for both me and my son will be negative, Hektor will be chipped with my information. My visitor...3 years ago in Personal More Like This
EDIT 5: Congrats to everyone who said, that Katze is a male... as you were right. So "she" is a "he" and he still is at the vet until tomorrow evening. He got his bits bewteen his legs removed and also they removed fleas and worms. he is not chipped and not tattooed which means that no one feels responsible for him... well, of course I do now.
There is also very sad news about him though.... his leg. He must have had an accident, for example with a car quite some time ago because indeed his leg has

Over night I have gotten really sweet notes by nice people here who offered help with the allergy thing.... thank you very much! You know who you are and I really apprecuiate your thoughts and ideas.
Unfortunately I got even more notes telling me to keep the cat, not understanding what this is all about. So I am telling you know:
I have several allergies against several things already, be it fur of guinea pigs, pollen, antibiotics or food or even dust. Those are just a few examples of many.... believe me, many allergies. Being stung by a wasp or even eating a fresh apple will kill me within minutes. I am on antihistamine pills pretty much all of the year, so my symptoms are reduced... but they are never fully gone.
I have this since I am a small child. There have been times I could not leave the house in spring, because I had bad bad asthma because of the pollen and believe me, this is hard for a child, when your friends may play outside in the s

FAQsHey did you know it's really rude to go up to someone and sayFAQs3 years ago in Personal More Like This
"Hey I love what you're doing! I don't want to pay for it though. Tell me how to do it so I can try myself."
If I had a shop you wouldn't come into it and ask for all my secrets, would you? The same applies here. Don't get butthurt when I give you a grumpy rebuke - this is my living!
1. How do you attach the fimo to the fur?
I glue it on with hot glue or bostik multi-purpose. Some artists like to make holes in the sculpt and sew it on.
2. How do you dye fake fur?
You CAN'T! It's impoooosiblleeeee. I tried masses of "confirmed" techniques, involving messy and sometimes stinky dyes, and none of them really worked. The best way I have found is to use dylon fabric paints and just brush them with a nail brush. Here's a video tutorial that is along the same lines, although I wouldn't use acrylic paint personally: http://youtu.be/RPA8Y6GcD6E My favourite method is to buy fabric in the right colour
Daily Deviations: How to SuggestI constantly find that many deviants, new and otherwise, simply do not know how to suggest a Daily Deviation.Daily Deviations: How to Suggest7 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Just to make sure we are all on the same page here:
Info to Know
The only rule applied to Daily Deviations is that a deviant may not receive more than one Daily Deviation within a period of three months.
All deviants, regardless of popularity, are eligible to receive Daily Deviations.
Popular deviants are still deviants and will not be disqualified on the mere charge of being popular from receiving a Daily Deviation.
Any deviation may possibly receive a Daily Deviation.
This is regardless of the amount of views or favorites it has garnered.
You are ALLOWED to suggest YOURSELF. Just don't abuse this.
The following are not rules on how to suggest Daily Deviations but rather guidelines that help staff capable to select Daily Deviations better and more quickly process suggestions.
Movie Talk: Animated Movie Poster/Cover RantSince my journal needs an update i thought hey, why not posting this here, too. This is an art site after all and should be interesting to you as well.Movie Talk: Animated Movie Poster/Cover Rant2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I am someone who might be called a "cineaste" - because it's true. I friggin' LOVE movies. I love watching them, collecting them, doing research, listening to audio commentaries and learning about the backgrounds. And i always had a soft spot for animated motion pictures. Still do. Disney is awesome, so is Dreamworks and the not so wellknown ones.
Lately i went through my DVD-Collection once more and...i just realised again how MUCH i despise the awful covers that go along with most of the animated movie DVD releases. Especially when i recall the original theatrical posters - which are all (design wise) of sheer BRILLIANCE, full of power and emotion and actually dignify the movie's content. Not to be compared with the cheap DVD covers. Little comparison for you to see what i mean - because i felt like doing one.

Where my materials come from...I have gotten many questions about this....so I thought I would clear it up a bitWhere my materials come from...8 years ago in Personal More Like This
I live in a very small village in Northern Alaska. I also grew up in even a smaller village. The thing is, we have no roads. So all of the food for the stores come through airplane. As a consequence, food is very very expensive, because we are also paying for it to be shipped by air.
Jobs are scarce here. And more than 75% of them are taken by people who are not from here and/or don't even live here. So money is rare.
We are also part of a movement to keep our culture alive. In this day and and age filled with computers, airplanes, drugs, and other impending situations including the decimation of our numbers....it is a struggle to hold onto what little there is left. And even harder because the younger generations do not hold it dear.
All of my natural materials come from the animals we harvest for food, or from ani
