Battle of the Brands - The Polymer Clay ConundrumMany of us start with one brand of polymer clay to start, and as we embrace the clays pros, we often eventually get used to the cons as well and work our way around them. But what if you knew which brand was right for you before you even touched the clay? Each polymer clay brand has many characteristics that make it distinct from other brands, so if you are looking for a specific trait in your clay, you might want to read on. Who knows, you might find something better then what you are working with right now.Battle of the Brands - The Polymer Clay Conundrum6 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I have personally tried every popular brand of polymer clay, and there are about five of them. There are also the polymer clays that require painting afterwards, like Studio by Sculpey as well as Super Sculpey... but I will not get into those.
The five most easily attainable clays are Fimo Classic, Fimo Soft, Sculpey III, Premo, and Kato Polyclay. Each have their own distinct characteristics, pros, cons, and baking times. These are my findings in point form:

Mythical or Magical the Crowned Princes of Horses
It’s a common error to refer to unicorns as “mythical” creatures, since they actually appeared in Greek natural histories, rather than mythology. Unicorns were thought to be very real, albeit well–hidden. They are possibly the purest symbolic essence of the cult of the “Majestic Horse,” usually being all white and reputedly only being in danger of being captured by virgin females. Whatever their magical origin and possible reality, they have long been captivating creatures in artists’ imaginations.
Soft Mount Tutorial, Leg ArmaturesI finally took some time to make what (I hope) is a decent tutorial on how I make the leg armatures in my soft mounts, because I've had so many people asking me how I do it! And I don't know how to livestream stuff so I figured I would just videotape the process of working on my latest coyote, so that way I can just send the link to anyone who asks in the future. It's a long process, and I admit its not the most exciting video to watch, but I edited it down to a tolerable length, so hopefully you can learn a thing or two from it!Soft Mount Tutorial, Leg Armatures9 months ago in Personal More Like This
Important: Have you Notified your Stock Providers?Hi all,Important: Have you Notified your Stock Providers?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I just wanted to take a quick moment out from registering people for the Photomanipulation Tournament to bring to your attention an issue that is plaguing our community.
I think a lot of people think that, with the new Mentions system, there is no need to notify stock providers when you use their work. This is untrue! There are a few of reasons why you still need to notify them via note or comment, as per their preference, when you use their stock:
1. Some people turn their Mentions off because they get to be annoying. Thus, if you don't tell them, they may never see your gorgeous work.
2. Stock providers like to keep track of your work, and notes/comments help with that.
3. If your stock provider doesn't see your work, he/she can't give you love!
How to get popular on DeviantArtHi I would like to give you some ideas of how to get yourself noticed and pump up your pageviews organically without the aid of viewbots and advertising. How to get popular on DeviantArt6 months ago in Personal More Like This
First of all it's important to present your work in a way that is clean and professional, the first thing people look at when they look at a piece of art is quality of your work, it's all good that you are taking pictures of your art but there are simple ways to do so without fancy equipment.
-Take a picture of your work outside at mid-day when the sun is at it's highest, the reason for this is that it eliminates shadows from your work, you need light to hit your canvas/pad from all areas, also if you have used materials that reflect light (e.g Graphite) try and move the canvas/pad around slightly so that it removes the reflections.
Now that you have taken a picture of your work find an editing software like Photoshop (don't worry if you cannot afford this, down
Pandoraverse FAQHey all. I just wanna answer some commonly asked questions about the Pandoraverse and my art and stuffPandoraverse FAQ6 months ago in Personal More Like This
How was Pandora born?
Pandora's conception is truly one those classic tales of romance. Discord falls in love with Twilight Sparkle, they marry, Discord pops a magic egg out one day at breakfast time with Twilight. Pandora hatches from it a few weeks later. Wait did I say it was a classic tale of romance? No i meant it was a kinda weird and random tale of romance
When does the Pandoraverse take place in the MLP timeline?
Pandoraverse is an alternate story timeline occuring a few years after Season 4 of MLP. A marked difference would be that Twilight's tree library was not destroyed by Tirek, and that her Season 5 crystal castle does not exist in the Pandoraverse. Why? Mostly cuz I don't wanna draw that crystal castle thing, if I'm being honest. Anyway, most of the events occurring in Season 5 won't be referenced in the Pandoraverse storyline. Neither will events

How to Remove that GHASTLY Orange 'Core' TagDeviantArt seems to be raising the price of premium membership, and are now renaming it to what I'm sure they were hoping would be indicative of their pseudo-edgy brand, but in reality, is just confusing the hell out of people. We all know what premium membership is. But core? Sounds extreme! Do we all get skateboards, pogs, and a complimentary Pennywise album bundled with it?How to Remove that GHASTLY Orange 'Core' Tag4 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Christ I'm old.
Now, I don't have a problem with dA changing their prices. Inflation is a real thing, and a business has to do what it must to stay afloat. What astounds me, though, they're making such a big deal out of it. Aren't you supposed to not have some big front-page celebration of raising prices? Aren't you just supposed to sneak it in, not say a word, and hope nobody really notices? And if people do raise a fuss, make some business-ey statement about "operating costs" and "economic trends" in some big-worded pile of lip service to quell the peasant folk?
And not only are they making a big deal out of it
So, what does KIRIBAN mean anyways?"Next Kiriban: 15000 pageviews"So, what does KIRIBAN mean anyways?7 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
"Kiriban" is a word that lots and lots of people use, especially here on Deviantart. Get the pageview hit, get a gift. however...
most people in general know what it is, but not what it means -> http://forum.deviantart.com/devart/general/977173/
-3- me being Japanese myself wanted to find out the origin of
this term and what it actually mean so I did a nice amount of searchin.
first I found this googled:
"Kiriban is the Japanese term (Kanji: キリ番 ) for web counter special"
but that doesnt really help to understand the meanig
so I googled "キリ番":
and found out that キリ番 is actually a shorten version of「きりのいい番号」
so... for this, キリ would mean "cut" and "きりのいい" would mean "well cut"
「きりのいい番号」would then literally mean- "a we

Movie Talk: Animated Movie Poster/Cover RantSince my journal needs an update i thought hey, why not posting this here, too. This is an art site after all and should be interesting to you as well.Movie Talk: Animated Movie Poster/Cover Rant3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I am someone who might be called a "cineaste" - because it's true. I friggin' LOVE movies. I love watching them, collecting them, doing research, listening to audio commentaries and learning about the backgrounds. And i always had a soft spot for animated motion pictures. Still do. Disney is awesome, so is Dreamworks and the not so wellknown ones.
Lately i went through my DVD-Collection once more and...i just realised again how MUCH i despise the awful covers that go along with most of the animated movie DVD releases. Especially when i recall the original theatrical posters - which are all (design wise) of sheer BRILLIANCE, full of power and emotion and actually dignify the movie's content. Not to be compared with the cheap DVD covers. Little comparison for you to see what i mean - because i felt like doing one.
Where my materials come from...I have gotten many questions about this....so I thought I would clear it up a bitWhere my materials come from...8 years ago in Personal More Like This
I live in a very small village in Northern Alaska. I also grew up in even a smaller village. The thing is, we have no roads. So all of the food for the stores come through airplane. As a consequence, food is very very expensive, because we are also paying for it to be shipped by air.
Jobs are scarce here. And more than 75% of them are taken by people who are not from here and/or don't even live here. So money is rare.
We are also part of a movement to keep our culture alive. In this day and and age filled with computers, airplanes, drugs, and other impending situations including the decimation of our numbers....it is a struggle to hold onto what little there is left. And even harder because the younger generations do not hold it dear.
All of my natural materials come from the animals we harvest for food, or from ani

Good artI've seen a lot of people claim they know what "good art" is or isn't, so I I'll just add my two cents.Good art7 months ago in Personal More Like This
I spent a very long time trying to make my own art more realistic (never got close to realism, but there was an attempt) but then I realized I didn't even like realistic art and the only reason I was trying to achieve it was because others had told me that's what I should strive for.
It's not that I think realistic art is bad or that other people are wrong for liking it. I can most certainly see the appeal of it. It's simply that I'm personally not that interested in it. When I see realistic art I tend to not notice the work put into it. It's more like a photo to me, even if it includes a lot of fantastical elements. Again, that's what a lot of people like about it, and that's great. I just happen to like when a drawing is unapologetic about being a drawing, like the styles of Bjørn Wiinblad and Tove Jansson.
There are only two things I personally think are important to learn wh
