Knowledge is Out There, Grasp It!EDIT 2/13/14:Knowledge is Out There, Grasp It!1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Due to a few concerns that I'm overgeneralizing through my use of the word ignorant, I wanted to amend some things:
1. This journal was not written out of a pretentious attitude, in fact it's quite the opposite. I feel the need to share knowledge, and I do whenever I can. I could never be upset with those who truly do not know where to start when it comes to enriching their minds.
2. This journal is not about lording knowledge above those who do not yet possess it.
3. This journal is not about bashing someone for the barriers that can impede or prevent their desire or ability to absorb new information.
4. I do not encourage people to "just Google it," that is why resources are listed at the bottom.
5. If you would like to contribute a resource, please link it in your comments.
I’ve been hearing the phrase “I don’t know what ____ is” a lot as of late and it’s been a little irksome, and here’s why: we are currently living in
Commissions Contracts: A Must Have. Yes, there is a lot to read and Yes you should read it. Copy it, paste it and edit it to suit your needs as a commissioner or commissioned artist. Protect yourself by drafting a contract and understanding it.</a>Commissions Contracts: A Must Have.6 years ago in Art Features More Like This
It has come to my attention that many deviants commission their work and hold proceedings entirely over deviantArt. In the case that your client/commissioned artist begins to use and distribute your work illegally you will need to have a greater standing than simply a bunch of e-mail print outs if you are to go to court over the matter of misuse. Often the matter is over misunderstanding, which a contract will also help clarify for both parties.
I cannot stress how important it is when doing commissions to have physical signed copies of an Artist/Client Commission Agreement or at the very least a signed confirmation of engagement. It takes longer to organise, especially with overseas clients, but it protects the rights of both parties to the work and is worth the day or so

~~The Royalty Contest~~
It's fast-approaching Christmas, which is a time that a lot of people enjoy. In the spirit of things, we wanted to run a Christmas contest, but, by scanning over DeviantArt and other groups, we saw that, naturally, a lot of other groups had the same idea. We don't much fancy running a contest that's almost identical to other contests on DA – a simple Christmas-themed pony contest is something that you can take part in elsewhere. We also realised that, if we did do yet another Christmas pony contest, we'd likely see a lot of people submitting a single contest entry to several similarly-themed contests. It would be the natural thing to do, and so we wouldn't necessarily blame anyone if t

What to do
Do a piece of artwork of my ponysona, Eclipse Song, and my fiance's ponysona, Flame Master together.
This doesn't have to be a picture if you feel you aren't particularly artistic in that manner - you can write a short (or long) fanfic, even poetry, if that's more up your alley, or anything you feel would be appropriate for the contest! Just show off your skill.
You can do anything you'd like for your piece, but it must have at least somewhat of a romantic theme.

How to Plot Like a GrimIn ten simple steps, you too can plot like a Grim. How to Plot Like a Grim2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
1. Get an idea
This can be a brief snippet of dialogue. Or an ending that just seems perfect. Sometimes it's just the concept of what I'd like to see a character go through. I write that down. Usually it doesn't see the cold light of day for at least a couple months, but when I've thought about it long enough and can't seem to get the idea out of my head, that's when I sit down and start plotting things out a bit.
2. Work out the basic plot
Now that I've got the idea, I need to work out the basic details. But how do I do that? Well, I write it down. Then I think about the different angles to get to that idea. I write those down. If it's dialogue, who's talking? What do they feel? Who are they talking to? If it's a snippet of a scene, who's in the scene? Why are they there? What are they doing? What's going on outside of that scene?

You come home from school one day. You've had yet another horrible day. You're just ready to give up. So you go to your room, close the door, and take out that suicide note you've written and rewritten over and over and over You take out those razor blades, and cut for the very last time. You grab that bottle of pills and take them all. Laying down, holding the letter to your chest, you close your eyes for the very last time.
A few hours later, your little brother knocks on your door to come tell you dinners ready. You don't answer, so he walks in. All he sees is you laying on your bed, so he thinks you're asleep. He tells your mom this. Your mom goes to your room to wake you up. She notices something is odd. She grabs the paper in your hand and reads it. Sobbing, she tries to wake you up. She's screaming your name. Your brother, so confused, runs to go tell Dad that "Mommy is crying and sissy won't wake up."
Your dad runs to your room. He looks at yo

SQUID'S BOTTOM 8 WING SINS (A TUTORIAL)So like I said to the two people who aren't protesting the watch feed, I originally wrote this as a vicious rant, but it turns out I was redirecting anger from a RL thing. rrr.SQUID'S BOTTOM 8 WING SINS (A TUTORIAL)3 months ago in Art Features More Like This
But still. These are annoying as hell. If you see someone doing this junk, send them this. It may be their only chance of salvation.
SIN #8 INCORRECT FLIGHT FEATHER STACKING
There are few things that can be said with absolute confidence that are true of all birds, but this is one of them: the flight feathers always stack the same way.
This can be confusing to remember, so keep a hand of cards next to you while you draw:
SIN #7 NO FEATHER GROUPS

Feathers stack in a predictable, orderly manner, so just take thirty seconds and learn it. If the phrase "dorsal median primary co
Rat Anatomy Compilation.Rats are very fascinating little creatures. They have small hands like humans, minus the thumbs. They are intelligent and social, and each rat has a unique personality. They can also easily stand on their hind legs, making them an easy transition to an anthropomorphic form for stories and art.Rat Anatomy Compilation.3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Unfortunately, though, they are damn difficult to draw, and there are precious few resources for those wishing to delve into their anatomical structure (certainly me included). So I will be collecting references, both photos and drawings, that I think might be helpful to someone looking to draw my charming friend Rattus norvegicus (and perhaps some of his closest family members). I will probably add to this from time to time as I find new resources, so please feel free to suggest things that you think might be useful!

There are a plethora of brushes available to you on photoshop. This guide will explain different brush settings, as well as how to install different brush packs here on deviantART. This guide is for pressure sensitive pen tablets. It is going to be much easier to do things with a tablet. Ones by Wacom are good, and you can get a bamboo for under 99$ USD.
Basic Brushes in Photoshop
It's important to stick with default ones to learn all the settings. You can do so many things with the hard round brush.
Bring up your brush palette in one of the following ways. (note I am in CS3, so the icons will look much older, but same thing. )

New CONTEST! (EDIT)( Edit: Extended the deadline!)New CONTEST! (EDIT)1 year ago in Personal More Like This
...fore being a bit more exact.
This time the new contest will be about art which should have been inspired by music.
Simple as that, I will give you some songs. You can pick one (or more than one if you wanter enter more than once), and then you draw the given character(s) for that music in a fitting situation.
A record of how you drew it and mixed it with the music would be appreciated, but is no have-to because I know some may not be able to record.
So here come all the infos and the entrys folder, after that the songs and characters.
What to do to win?
... well okay not thaaat simple^^.
You will have some songs give, you can pick one out of. Under each song are shown the character(s) you can draw for that song. If there is a (+) somewhere, it means both characters have to be on the picture.
What count´s most is what feeling the p

How do you decide who the winners will be? I judge on how much effort you put into it, the concept and story

DESIGN TUTORIAL - BASIC CHARACTER CREATIONYo! I get a lot of questions on how I create my characters, such as how do I come up with color schemes, markings, the basic idea, all that cool stuff~ X3DESIGN TUTORIAL - BASIC CHARACTER CREATION2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So I'd thought I do a little design tutorial. This is a TEXT based tutorial, meant to give the tricks/tips that I use.
So prepare to read! I will be using my characters as examples.
This tutorial covers design tips for both ANIMALS AND HUMANS.
KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE ARE TIPS AND TRICKS THAT I USE.
EVERYONE MAY HAVE A DIFFERENT PROCEDURE.
The Idea: Where and How Do I start?
So you want to create a new character huh? But you don't know where to start with the process....Hmm. When I'm coming up with a new character, I start with the personality about 75% of the time. It doesn't have to be in-depth, just basic personality traits.
So for example I might want a character that is:
- Loud, aggressive, rude, doesn't give a fuck about anythi
My Thoughts on ImprovementI get a lot of questions on how to go about improving your drawing ability. I never really know how to answer them since every artist I've met seems to grow better under different conditions. For example, my friend :icondana-t: has completed over one hundred sketchbooks in the past four years. I've completed four in the same amount of time, but our trends of improvement are (kinda) similar because we learn in different ways.My Thoughts on Improvement1 year ago in Personal More Like This
One of the reasons I never end up making a tutorial is basically because I don't think they work. Plenty of people will disagree with me on this, but that's my honest opinion. There might be a lot of opinions I type out here you'll disagree with, so keep in mind these are just my views. Here are my general thoughts on how to improve.
Stop thinking about style. Style is something you will develop gradually after you've spent years emulating other styles, talking with other artists, observing the world, and pinpointing what looks best to you. Ev

The idea of this contest is to promote trying new things and showing the personalities you have created with your characters!
This is a contest run by thetriforcebearer and Artception(sparsely, as I am away) with the help of Pix3M with the color palette.
How is it being judged?
After last summers contest I have found a site I can use to host for the voting process but I want everyone to vote under this criteria if you can.
IF I CATCH ANY PEOPLE ENTERING TO BEG FOR VOTES I WILL KICK YOU OUT OF THE CONTEST
I don't mean to be rabid about this but I don't want this to overflow from some person begging for votes because it's really truly not fair. I have faith that :icondigitalponyocs: members are above such nonsense but I just want to make this clear:
Don't vote on artistic skill. This group is for learning, not for who is the best Picasso. The idea is to reward for trying

The expressions tutorial I did for Wysp Learning Engine is finally on run!
It contains of 20 separate panels, each of them are meant to show a process of how to draw faces and expressions; so if you are interested, you can try it out here
The learning engine allows you to try practicing on a digital canvas right there on the site, which is really helpful because you're able to see your progress instantly; and hopefully you will find the tutorial I did worth seeing!
There also are some other tutorials; such as male and female anatomy and dragons tutorials; so Wysp is definitely worth checking out, especially for young learning artists
Sorry I am not very active lately, but have a nice day, by the way
