"Can you keep a secret? I’m trying to organize a prison break. I’m looking for, like, an accomplice. We have to first get out of this bar. Then the hotel, then the city, and then the country. Are you in or you out?"
Lost in Translation (2003)

A portrait on display at my cinema-inspired solo show MOMENTS, which opened June 7th at NYC's Bottleneck Gallery.

Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation is a very beautiful and subtle film, another one of my all-time favorites! I first saw it when I was in high school and it totally went over my head, but I saw it again a few years later and blew my mind! Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson are just spectacular, it's my favorite performance by Scarlett. Digital painting from references, Adobe Photoshop + Cintiq 21UX tablet.

"I’ll wait for you. 5:00 at the station. Every day. Until you come."
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

A portrait on display at my cinema-inspired solo show MOMENTS, which opened June 7th at NYC's Bottleneck Gallery.

Latika, from favorite scene from Slumdog Millionaire... when the tinkly music starts and she looks up and sees Jamal and smiles...! The flashback at the beginning really nails it too. Digital painting from references, Adobe Photoshop + Cintiq 21UX tablet.

"No. I said... what kind of bird are you?"
Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

A portrait on display at my cinema-inspired solo show MOMENTS, which opened June 7th at NYC's Bottleneck Gallery.

I stared at a ton of old-timey portrait-paintings (John Singer Sargent, Vermeer, etc) for inspiration to do this piece. I wanted to get a traditional media feel and do the best job possible with this lovely moment from Moonrise Kingdom (when Sam Shakusky first lays eyes on Suzy Bishop!) Digital painting from references, many many hours, Adobe Photoshop + Cintiq 21UX tablet.

"The magician… takes the ordinary something and makes it into something extraordinary."
The Prestige (2006)

A portrait on display at my cinema-inspired solo show MOMENTS, which opened June 7th at NYC's Bottleneck Gallery. (It was last Friday! The rain was TORRENTIAL, but thank you to everyone who braved the tropical storm and showed up anyway!)

This was inspired by Tesla's lightbulbs in Nolan's The Prestige. Not a big or important scene but somehow I remembered it the most - it was just an ethereal moment. Painted with a Cintiq 21UX tablet in Adobe Photoshop. Reference: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pX-p7… Used a texture from =Sirius-sdz

"All those moments will be lost in time, like… tears… in rain. Time to die…"
Blade Runner (1982)

Another one of the closing piece from my solo show this summer, MOMENTS! Inspired by Roy Batty's beautiful final scene (partially unscripted by the actor, Rutger Hauer!) I think anyone who's seen the film will vividly recall this part... android feelings...

I nearly died working on this painting, it was so difficult, but I’m happy with how it finally turned out! Painted with references on a Cintiq 21UX tablet in Adobe Photoshop.

"You know what they awoke in the darkness of Khazad-dûm… shadow and flame."
The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Wagh, I'm so behind on uploading stuff!! This is a painting from my film-inspired solo show MOMENTS, which opened all the way back in June 2013 at NYC's Bottleneck Gallery. One of the most loved pieces from the show and one of the first to sell out, I think. (The AP edition is also gone!)

Inspired by the most awesome and oft-drawn Balrog scene in the first Lord of the Rings installment. Digital painting from various references, Adobe Photoshop + Cintiq 21UX tablet. (The title should be "The Darkness of Khazad-dûm" but dA won't let me put the accent in the title, arghghgh.)

"Are you not entertained? ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!"
Gladiator (2000)

This was THE movie that got me "into" movies. It's the first big epic that I distinctly remember watching as a kid and being incredibly impressed (the other big one at the time, Braveheart, didn't do anything for me) - ten years and multiple rewatches later I still think Gladiator is awesome. I know it's not the most historically accurate of films and it's a bit dramatic and overblown but I LOVE it and I think it is one of Russell Crowe's finest performances. He really elevated the material and made Maximus inspiring, heartbreaking, and badass at the same time. Joaquin Phoenix and Connie Nielsen also shine and RAAA THIS MOVIE.

Also:
The Gladiator screenplay faced many rewrites and revisions due to Russell Crowe's script suggestions. Crowe questioned every aspect of the evolving script and strode off the set when he did not get answers. According to a DreamWorks executive, "(Russell Crowe) tried to rewrite the entire script on the spot. You know the big line in the trailer, 'In this life or the next, I will have my vengeance'? At first he absolutely refused to say it." Nicholson, the third and final screenwriter, says Crowe told him, "Your lines are garbage but I'm the greatest actor in the world, and I can make even garbage sound good." (source)

Painted with references on a Cintiq 21UX tablet in Adobe Photoshop. I really wanted to get a sense of movement and a gritty feel down with this portrait.

For we shall meet again.
A study of Clara Oswin Oswald that I did in between doing work for my solo show! Really needed a break. Mostly just an experiment in color and brushstrokes. I'd love to draw all the other companions I haven't done yet too... someday, when I have time...

Ref photo: sta.sh/0zaug7kndtr Painted in Adobe Photoshop, a couple hours on a Wacom Cintiq 21UX.

Sorry for the lack of updates here! I've been so busy with show work, and I post more often to my sketchblog nowadays. I'll try and keep my dA gallery updated more. ._.; It'll be great when I can finally start posting the stuff I've been spending all my time on...
