Community Operations Newsletter - June 2014In this, the first of a new, regular newsletter, I'd like to take a moment to give you an overview of the Community Operations department.Community Operations Newsletter - June 20149 months ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
DeviantART's Community Operations Department encompasses the Help Desk and the Copyright and Etiquette Administration (CEA) teams. These teams are dedicated to providing a high level of support within the community via our help desk portal as well as what we call the "Moderation Desk", which is where all of the deviations that have been reported as being unsuitable or in violation of our policies, await review from a member of staff.
Community Operations Staff are spread out across the globe on a mix of many time zones. Some work from a physical office in deviantART HQ in Los Angeles, some work from their homes in America, Canada, Bahamas, Germany and the UK. This may not sound like a real job, but like any employment, there are clearly laid out roles and responsibilities as well as continuous supervision to ensure that people are meeting expectati
Chuck Jones Quotes on Characters"If you start with character, you probably will end up with good drawings."Chuck Jones Quotes on Characters2 years ago in Personal More Like This
"As you become acquainted with a character you are creating, you add parts of yourself that are pertinent to that character."
"Each character represented a trait that resides in me."
"I have come to know Bugs so well that I no longer have to think about what he is doing in any situation. I let the part of me that is Bugs come to the surface, knowing, with regret, that I can never match his marvelous confidence."
"The whole essence of good drawing—and of good thinking, perhaps—is to work a subject down to the simplest form possible and still have it believable for what it is meant to be."
~Chuck Jones, director, animator, cartoonist, and cocreator of characters we know today as the Looney Tunes
I got trolled last year about how you should not pour traits of people you know or yourself into your characters. It makes it too personal, they said. It's unprofessional and stupi
Critiquing Critiquing StoryStory: Turns out you're doing it wrong.Critiquing Critiquing Story6 months ago in Personal More Like This
Everyone is- and what's more, anyone who tries to make a foray into storytelling without having mastery over their efforts merits endless scorn.
I've had the privilege of sharing advice with some other creators of late, and seen some of the (usually anonymous) criticism being leveled at their work. It's noteworthy for being intense, superficially sophisticated, and misguided.
Now, there are two kinds of creators out there. Those who don't give a fig for what other people think, and dismiss all criticism out of hand.
...Those creators tend not to improve.
Then there are those who care about the quality of their work, take pains to make it enjoyable for others, and are receptive to feedback.
These individuals have the most potential as writers, and are also most vulnerable to their efforts being permanently deformed by vindictive critique.
They'll be assured their characters are flat cutout

Preventing Injuries for Artists (and people who work with computers)
Hello there my fellow deviants, time for a new update. It’s a long entry, so go grab a snack and sit tight with a good posture, because there's a lot to learn here - even some anatomy.
I just read about Loish’s injury on her blog, and it’s truly saddening to see a fellow artist struggling with a physical limitation that affects their workflow.
Loish is absolutely right, the body has its limits and we ought to be careful before it’s too late.
Tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, aren’t stranger terms to me, many artists and people who work with computers for many hours, tend to deal with the same conditions, some let it advance to the stage where the only treatment is surgery, which can potentially reduce mobility and destroy an illustrator’s career.
My deviantART StoryMy deviantART Story7 months ago in Art Features More Like This
This was my very first DA submission I had seen a wallpaper very similar so I used it as my inspiration to do a digital painting in PS.
I was new to the digital Art scene and had basic PS experience, due to a disability I could no longer use my Pencils to hand sketch which was always my favorite medium.
So I thought I would give digital Art a go and chose to make use of PS, that was a little over 1 year ago.
So I began browsing DA and getting familiar with things and checking out the different styles of Art.
That is when I came across this beautiful piece by my Friend Xzendor7, I was blown away!
I was really curious as to how this was done, and Rolando always gives a very detailed description of his process.
This is how I came to know about Fractals and Fractal Art and also what makes a "Fractal Composition" , it was love at first sight so to speak
This is "Sakura" my very first attempt at maki
The 101 Guide To Marketing For ArtistsSlowly I get to catch up with deviations on here, now I just need to make use of the journals more oftenThe 101 Guide To Marketing For Artists11 months ago in Personal More Like This
There are some things I would be glad, someone would have told me earlier...
Marketing is such a thing - since I´m freelancing 5 years now it is save to say that is no accident that I´m happily blessed with the "just right" clients and it all boils down to be due to authentic marketing. Honestly- I embrace everything that has to do with it, below you find my write up to get a better understanding of what it is all about.
I always found interest in psychology and marketing but when I jumped on the freelancing train 5 years ago I especially embraced anything that I could find to help me understand, use and practice marketing as a way to keep myself busy with work that I love to do and to collaborate with people who respect what I do.
In the process I learned much from many different experts and in this post I will forward what I´ve learn

Don't go to Art School!I have not been brave enough to utter that sentence- until today. Today is the day I read THIS GREAT ARTICLE by Noah Bradley: https://medium.com/i-m-h-o/138c5efd45e9 I have been more and more bothered by us artists paying for art schools that cost as much as Ivy League law schools (or more) only to come out of said schools not able to find art jobs to pay off the mounds of debt that has left school with you! This article also mirrors my own feelings: its not about the instructors (or very rarely). They are underpaid and under appreciated. Some don't have the proper art training but have replaced that with Master's degrees, which is a pet peeve of mine as far as the costs the students are paying for that instruction. But, again, that's not the instructor's fault. They were able to get that job because only those with Master's degrees can fill those positions. They worked for that degree, so good for them.
