Join us for a deviantMEET in Hollywood!

DeviantART's headquarters are located in Hollywood, and we're hosting a deviantMEET in our own backyard!

You're Invited!

HDR Hollywood by xraystyle

Come for the speech, stay for the meet!

Whether you've attended previous deviantART events, or you want to make this your first, this deviantMEET promises to be an event unlike any before.  Opening with an exclusive storytelling session, deviantART CEO and Co-Founder, Angelo Sotira (spyed), will share behind-the-scenes stories about deviantART's inception and formative years. Then, stick around for the fun, traditional deviantMEET-type activities – sketching with friends, chatting with staff, and maybe even walking away with a bit of swag.

Map to deviantMEET

WeWork Hollywood

  • Location: 7083 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028
  • Date & Time: Wednesday, November 20th, 2013 at 7:00 PM
  • Admission: FREE, all-ages event!
  • What to Bring: Laptops/tablets, sketchbooks, cameras

It's a rare opportunity that deviantART's CEO gets to share the vision of the company, where we came from, and where we're headed offline and outside of his Journals.  We wanted to invite local deviants to have some fun with our staff, hear the tales that made us what we are today, and generally recreate the friendships you've made online at this unique offline opportunity.

After Angelo's talk, you can ask staff your burning questions, hang out and create art with supplies you've brought with you, and enjoy some free snacks. We might even have some devious swag to go around.

Feel free to bring your favorite digital tablet, iPad, sketchbooks, notepads, cameras, and laptops if you feel up to it! We can't wait to meet with you!

On Wednesday, November 20th, deviants of all ages are invited to join us in Hollywood!  Whether you've attended previous deviantART events, or you want to make this your first, this deviantMEET promises to be unlike any other!

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

More Like This on Deviation Pages

Please note: This feature is available to a limited number of members and will be rolled out to everyone over time.

We've brought More Like This results to deviation pages, to make the experience of exploring art on deviantART even easier than before! Featuring a mix of art from the artist whose deviation you are viewing and related artwork created by other artists, More Like This lets you delve even deeper into a world of artwork you love.

Change Log

  • In the Message Center, deviation titles and authors displayed incorrectly in Critique stacks. Fixed by yury-n
  • When using Firefox on Android devices, the keyboard would automatically open on the home page in some cases, due to the search field being auto-focused. Fixed by banks
  • The Customization > Icons > Misc category briefly did not accept .jpg files. Fixed by shahyarg
  • In the Journal Portal section of the site footer, the "comments" labels were misplaced. Fixed by helloandre
  • When changing the category of a Group Journal from "Personal Journal" to anything else, the new category was not saved. Fixed by helloandre
  • Paging was briefly broken on some pages and modals. Fixed by shahyarg

Sta.sh / New Submit

  • Dragging the mouse to select was very slow when a large amount of Sta.sh items were present. Fixed by adahacker
  • The title of the browser tab did not update when the file was renamed. Fixed by drommk
  • The "Submit Prints" step would consistently generate an "invalid value" error. Fixed by adahacker
  • Unchecking the "Submit Prints" checkbox when editing did nothing. Fixed by drommk
  • Editing a Journal's category could cause it to show up in one's Gallery. Fixed by adahacker

Sta.sh Writer

  • Pressing "Done" in Writer would sometimes remove Sta.sh Writer documents from stacks other than the "Drafts" stack. Fixed by kemayo
  • Pressing tab when in lists will now indent the list item, if appropriate. Fixed by Alisey
  • Pressing tab three times would cause the cursor to jump past the current word. Fixed by Alisey
  • Submitting multiple comments on Sta.sh items without reloading the page would cause problems. Fixed by inazar
  • For mobile devices, the Sta.sh Writer sidebar covered things up when trying to comment. Fixed by inazar

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback left on last week's Site Update! Quite a bit of feedback was left, and we wanted to address a few concerns that were raised in the comments.
  • Questions were raised regarding the royalty structure of 80% for artists and 20% for deviantART.
    • To put things simply, it costs money to run deviantART. This feature alone required building a new interface for the widget, a My Earnings accounting system, integrations to allow conversion of Points to U.S. Dollars, constructing a range of new backend functions for the Submit process, a new Message Center feature organizing all correspondence about commissions using the widget, and the integration of the deviantART Points platform that permits micro-payments without the buyers using credit cards. The fee helps us build these things, and there is more to come and more to be built.
    • We are considering tiered fees in the future for people who reach monthly sales levels, and for Premium Members, but we’d like to see this spread out onto the site before making those changes, so we can accurately project where the breaks for the different levels should be placed.
    • Anyone who chooses to use the widget will be providing us valuable insight and data that we will use to mold the future of the widget and the forthcoming Portal/search ability that will allow people to browse and discover artists who are offering commissions.
  • There was a concern voiced by some deviants that we would try to make the Commissions widget mandatory.
    • This is not the case. The Commissions widget is and will be an optional tool that deviants can use, but no one is obligated to use it if they prefer not to.
  • Many deviants were pleased with the updates to deviantART muro.
  • The suggestion regarding a word count in Sta.sh Writer was well received.
  • Some deviants would like a way to sort through deviations in their Message Center based on whether or not the deviations have critique requested. Suggested by tisinrei

Deviousness Award

Congratulations to `thorns

What is this Awesome Achievement?

The Deviousness Award is an accolade which is traditionally handed out on the 1st of every month to one truly outstanding deviant.

As 2012 kicks off with fireworks around the world, we're also celebrating in style with the latest addition to the recipients of the illustrious Deviousness Award.

Who is `thorns??

`thorns is long time deviant who has been a continuous bundle of energy for the literature community. She has been ever present, promoting positive ideals that bring the community together. `thorns is highly regarded as being an excellent communicator, always friendly and open, accepting to all types of writers regardless of experience and presence.

`thorns's well known Word Wars Chat Tour has not only exposed many literature groups, but invited the community into dAmn chats and offered a place for those who participate to get to know each other, whilst having fun doing so. The Word Wars in particular are friendly competitive games that encourage anyone to continue their writing projects helping individuals develop their own work. `thorns always approaches these with enthusiasm and encouragement, inviting others to join in, even if they are not linked to the group.

Aside from her personal mission to get the literature community chatting, she also is the founder of #Beta-readers , a group that matches authors up with readers to help provide critique and develop writers. `thorns is always involved, always supportive of the community, the events we run and is a genuinely friendly, humble and extremely welcoming shining star.

We're absolutely delighted to bestow the Deviousness Award for January 2012 to `thorns. Congratulations!

Congratulations to `thorns

Seniorityheader 2 by fourteenthstar
This article marks the latest announcements detailing the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 900 deviants holding the highly saught after ` -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.

So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.

Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many others who deviate to be recognised in the crowd.

Today, we present to you the following deviants who have all been awarded Seniority as part of our quarterly community recognitions. They have all been nominated for their efforts in the community by multiple deviants, Staff and Volunteers.

Congratulations everyone! :dalove:

Deviousness Award

Congratulations to `blepharopsis

What is this Awesome Achievement?

The Deviousness Award is an accolade which is traditionally handed out on the 1st of every month to one truly outstanding deviant.

`blepharopsis has developed a truly iconic gallery within our community. Whilst at first you may be somewhat creeped out by the extreme shots of creepy crawlies, you can't help but be captivated by the detail and quality of the artwork that has become Igor's trademark style.  Unlike any other insect photographer, Igor manages to capture human like qualities in the smallest creatures,  especially the exotic Praying Mantis. The lighting, vibrance, detail, and the anthropomorphic qualities he attains never ceases to amaze.

Who is `Blepharopsis ?

Igor is well known in our community for his innovative photography. His journals are full of detail regarding his travels across the globe, where he inevitably returns with stunning photography documenting his experience.  An amazing deviant in every way possible, we're honored to bestow Deviousness for November 2011 to `blepharopsis. Congratulations Igor!

Congratulations to `blepharopsis

Hungry from avoiding food lines? Thirsty from the sweaty San Diego weather? Drop by the Analog Bar, and we will shower you with delicious food and adult beverages until you resemble the walking dead.

The Madefire crew will be unveiling some exclusive new Motion Books that you'll want to be the first to see, and a Madefire DJ will be scratching the records like Wolverine.
