Addressing Journals as Deviations!I wanted to address the controversy surrounding Journals as Deviations so that we're all on the same page.Addressing Journals as Deviations!3 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
We collected a list of comments from the release article and some journals and here they are, with my responses for all to see.
First, part of being in a community is being understanding. deviantART Staff faces this daily as we understand member concerns and try our best to serve you.
In situations like the one we face right now with Journals, I ask you to be understanding with us as we battle with difficult circumstances balancing the needs of millions of members.
Any change we make creates frustration, but if we do not make changes then we are killed by change itself.
Questions & Answers:
Q: Were people complaining about the old journal system at all? Because I think people were rather happy with it. I know I was. And can't you give people t

News, blogs, and journals have been merged into one, unifying these systems in order to make them simpler to use and more consistent in appearance and functionality. In bringing them together, now categorized as deviations, they're able to receive the same great benefits as all deviations on the deviantART network. Including the following:
Using the Journal Portal, you'll be able to look through an endless stream of content. Much like deviations, you may now flick through journals quickly. View Newest to find what's hot right now in the deviantART community, or view Popular
Gallery Makeover ProjectHello everyoneGallery Makeover Project2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Recently my team and I worked tirelessly on a project to help improve the gallery descriptions and thumbnail examples. While that project was indeed tedious with almost 4,000 categories in our system, it was also educational. What I learned from sorting through thousands and thousands of categories was that we have a lot of redundancy and a lot of categories that seem to have been created on a whim that are now simply homes for junk.
Over the years, the desire to appease niche communities and people who just wanted a specific area has led to some categories that go up to 4 levels deep, and it's really no wonder it's so confusing for people to figure out where to submit their artwork.
The conclusion I've come to is simplicity. While I'm not about to rip apart everything and make 6 stand alone categories, I do believe that there is a lot we can do to simplify the category tree. That includes some of the following:
1. Merging categories that ma

The New deviantART Comments
One of deviantART's strongest assets is the community's ability to bring self-expression into conversation, pushing the boundaries of creativity to a new level. We've improved creative communication by launching a new way to comment on deviantART, with access to formatting, emoticons, and, for Premium Members, the ability to include artwork and files in your comments.

Seniority Announcement - December 2011This article marks the latest announcements detailing the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 800 deviants holding the highly saught after ` -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.Seniority Announcement - December 20113 years ago in Personal More Like This
So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many others who deviate to be recognised

Art-for-Artists Project Stopped by dA TermsHello Deviants,Art-for-Artists Project Stopped by dA Terms2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
A few people may have already noticed that yesterday my commission widgets were removed by the dA Staff. This was due to the fact that this project actually violated some terms and conditions. This was unknown to me as well as a few others that I had checked with. I was sent a note to clarify what went on, and asked for permission to share it with you today to clarify any issues.
I'm noting you today regarding your use of the Commissions widget.
While we understand and appreciate your desire to help your fellow artists with a charitable project of this type, unfortunately taking donations via the Commissions system is not a permissible usage of the widget. While your intentions were valid, unfortunately allowing such usage would open us up to many other areas of abuse by those with less noble intentions.
As a result of this, the commission purchases have been refunded to the original buyers and the funds removed fro
New Username Symbols: Extended ThoughtsTwo weeks ago, we released two new products – deviant and art Mentions and new username symbols. Gratefully, and as we'd hoped, many deviants are embracing these changes in exactly the ways we'd anticipated, and the ways we ourselves did over the past several months of testing. While some deviants embraced the changes, it's fair to say that others have felt surprise, curiosity, and maybe even shock. These feelings are totally normal, but for the large part, there's a hope present. A positive outlook. The first steps in a new era that makes the way for our goals in the future, and, at the same time, removes clutter and confusion that new deviants often experience.New Username Symbols: Extended Thoughts2 years ago in Personal More Like This

In 2009, the Bolt Award went to the pixel perfect Stanley Sy ($starvingartist) who then passed this on to Simon Murray ($pachunka) during our 10th Birthday Celebrations in 2010.
