What is a Soul Eater?
Wikipedia explains a Soul Eater as an ancient folklore from the Hausa people of Nigeria, Africa. It was believed that a Soul Eater was able to consume an individuals spirit (or soul), causing a wasting disease that proved to be fatal. It is described as a classic form of the cannibalistic witch. In Hausa belief, Soul Eaters are thought to be men who were cursed by these witches and have to eat the souls of humans to live their lives. After a soul has been devoured, the victim disappears in a burst of dust. These mythological beings have been depicted in many cultures through the centuries. Their stories can be found in Egypt, Japan, Africa and many other countries. In

Into the Realm
“Evening songs of burning wood and mead and laughter, of blood and hunts and fellowship: our halls echo with memories old and new. A day through forest and field, chasing the smell of spring, a moment above the morning mist to steal a glimpse of seas twinkling on the horizon; an eternity before our gates, in wonderment at the carved quests of heroes, coming alive at a fingertip’s request. Witness a lifetime into the realm… it is quite the adventure.”

NEW CONTEST: Retro Photomanipulation! HBD, DA!!!It's DA's 15th Birthday!NEW CONTEST: Retro Photomanipulation! HBD, DA!!!1 month ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Have you ever wanted to create a photomanipulation in an older style or using a past cliche, perhaps with big, fluffy dresses or butterfly wings? Perhaps you wanted to make a lizard-creature or a vampire? Get excited! This is your chance to modernize an older look and win prizes!!
To celebrate DA's birthday, we'll be going retroactive. That means your job is to create a NEW photomanipulation from an older style. Do not copy someone else's art; rather, create a new, unique artwork inspired by an older style or theme.
This is not an attempt to bring back old styles or cliches. Rather, this contest is a chance to celebrate the evolution of the photomanipulation community. Here's the trick: Your job is to take an old style or theme and make it your own: fresh, relevant, unique, and creative!
Here are just a couple of stylistic examples just to show you what we'r

What do you think your favorite city will look like in one hundred years?
Architect Rem Koolhaas has completed a “vertical city” complex in Rotterdam, bringing a new style of multi–purpose skyscrapers to the city skyline. Bennett Stein wrote about the new buildings for KCRW’s Design & Architecture blog, calling the creator “the Godzilla of architecture.”
Here’s an excerpt from Stein’s essay:
about my texture packsmy texture packs are hereabout my texture packs2 years ago in Personal More Like This
There were some questions, for example:
Just a pack of the single textures here?
Nope. More like versions, different states of my "final" textures, that look different enough for me to offer them.
there are still many versions, that dont make it into a texture pack. i usally put the second best (from my impression) result from one texture into the texture pack.
ugh, can't download :S?
hit the "download file" button on the right hand side, you're welcome
premium download, what's inside?
additional textures, that did not make it into the texture pack, that were sorted out.
the same like the rest of my textures: do what you want, they are meant to be used in creative ways. so, no rules, no restrictions.
if you have any questions about my texture packs, please ask.
thank you for the support!

Lighthouse and Mt Everest
To touch the face of God…
Until the manned spaceflights of the 1960s let humanity “slip the surly bonds of earth,” the closest one could get to the heavens was Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world. As the breathtaking gallery presented here well documents, there is probably no more awe-inspiring geographic formation in our world. The summit actually pierces the clouds, often obscuring the &

Photographs and paintings of stars occupy that category of things you know are so, and yet it’s not quite possible to believe. One example is radio or television “signals” traveling in “waves” through the air, only to be reassembled for your listening or viewing pleasure in your living room radio or TV. Looking at clusters of stars lighting up the night sky like massive storm clouds, it’s impossible to think of those stars, those points of light, as separate massive burning suns, even though I know it’s so. Sometimes the most powerful magic requires no deception at all. The natural universe is more mystifying in its sheer

of laughter, talent, and voracious supernovas of friendship.
She's also an animator.
The pay's kinda okay I guess, better than your average burger flipper,
but not close to other equally hard working people in other jobs.
A couple weeks back, her hard drive gave up the ghost.
It stopped working like a unionized chemistry teacher
getting notice of a district labor dispute.
And leaving everyone else pretty darned peeved.
Trapped within her hard drive are her personal files,
past projects, portfolio samples...
...And the first five years of photos of her daughter, Lily.

Last but not least, amazing cosplay and photography by KashinoRei and Andy-K. They are in Germany so I wasn't able to meet them at Sakura-con, but hopefully I'll be able to visit a European con in the future

Should You Become a Professional Artist?Community WeekShould You Become a Professional Artist?8 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Do you enjoy art passionately and are considering doing it as your job, but have some worries such as;
Will I enjoy it as much as a job?
Will it be hard getting a job?
Will I become a starving artist?
If you're like me, you're asking yourself those questions and are letting them give you a hard time deciding whether or not to pursue art professionally. My health teacher told me, as we digressed from our topic of smoking, that to know whether or not you want to do a job, you have to hear what it's like from someone who's already doing it. That's why I decided to do an interview with professional artists on dA to give me, and hopefully many others, answers to these burning questions and an idea of what it's like to be a professional artist.
Okay, well let's get to it then
This is quite long so if you'd like to jump to a section, here are the questions I aske

Performing Daily Wondrous Hummingbirds!
All you need to set the stage is a plastic feeder filled with red–dyed sugar water to bring the endless caravan of performers right to your window or patio. They have a seemingly endless variety of brightly colorful costumes—some with spangles that catch and reflect the sunlight. They are mainly air dancers performing their repertoire of dives and loops and amazing midair maneuvers no other birds can pull off, stopping and starting, hovering like helicopters, flying upside down and backwards. But they can also be comedians and con men, tricking other bigger hummers to get at the
