This is a self portrait I did for part of my exam/coursework :-) It didn’t take very long as I was just trying to get an idea down onto paper, and I’m not sure how to feel about the photoshop work I’ve done but it’s all just practice and experimenting!

I finally finished this piece! I ended up using fewer eyes than I planned to because I felt it was going to look too cluttered in the end. I’m not really happy with how this turned out because it looks nothing like how I imagined it in my head, but then I decided I don’t care about making ‘pretty’ art just now. I’m trying to show how I feel self conscious about just being around groups of people; they see every tiny awkward thing I do wrong, they’re looking because I’m stupid or disgusting, how I feel constantly nervous and embarrassed almost every day. I’m not happy with this piece but I just wanted to create it to justify how I feel

Black acrylic, white charcoal, coloured pencils on white bristol board on grey/green board. HB pencil for the eyes

A quick little acrylic painting, rushed and smudgey in places, but it was fun to do!

30x20 inches, oil paint
70+ hours

After slaving away since the end of November, I’ve finally finished my painting. I have suddenly become so interested in self portraiture and I have decided to do a painting of myself at the end of each year, just to see how I might be improving as an artist and changing as a person.

I painted this for myself - for a long time I was motivated to draw because of the response I got from people on the internet (likes/comments on facebook/tumblr etc.) and I realised that I was drawing things that I knew would be popular when I uploaded them, so I never tried to do anything too different or personal because I knew it wouldn’t get as many hits. Although getting feedback is still really important to me, I’ve decided to paint and draw things that have more meaning to me, not what would get the most reblogs and look good on a t-shirt.

Basically I’m going to stop fretting about the internet, I’m not going to let the number of likes and retweets determine whether or not I should be proud of a piece, this is my first ever proper oil painting, and I’m happy with it :-)

Inspired by the Edward Thomas poem:
It seems I have no tears left. They should have fallen--
Their ghosts, if tears have ghosts, did fall that day
