Coming across a deserted house, whether hidden by the distance of a rolling countryside or by the shadows of adjoining city ghetto dwellings, is like stumbling across an unnoticed, unburied corpse. It is obviously dead now, but once it was full of lives. Coming across a haunted house is different. Deserted or still occupied, it is a place where lives, unsatisfied, have refused to move on into a full death. The houses reflect their tenants. They are living dead structures, refusing to return to dust.
“What terrified me will terrify others; and I need only describe the spectre which had haunted my midnight pillow”
– Mary Shelley
Know your Basics - TexturesThere are a lot of tutorials out there on how to create / photograph texture as well as how to use them on a technical level, but the question of why and when to use textures is rarely touched. This article wants to fill that gap and therefore looks at texures from a slightly different perspective.Know your Basics - Textures2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Textures in Manips as you know them
For a photomanipulator, the first thing that comes to mind when hearing the word "texture" are images that can be used in soft light or overlay mode to texture a manipulation or parts thereof. What most manipulators therefore have in mind, are images like the following:
Beautiful textures, sure, and useful, too, but have you ever thought of doing more with them than the aforementioned overlays? And have you ever considered using other kinds of textures, too?
A more objective look at Textures

PIONEERS SPACE ARTISTS DD - FEATURE #8Hello guys,PIONEERS SPACE ARTISTS DD - FEATURE #82 years ago in Art Features More Like This
This is a very special feature that is really dear to me, with a spicy taste of nostalgia and still awe and jaw dropping when looking at those artists.
This is a tribute to all the amazing space artists I met during my 4 years around here on dA, artists who are still active, pioneers in this digital style, or inactive on Deviantart but still not to be forgotten.
Artists you must have seen at least once here for they brought to life, feed on and on and still do, space scenes which fascinate me, give me fruit for thoughts, undoubtful inspiration to everyone who wants to grow in painting, photomanip or 3D style, serving art at its best, helping each other.
Space art is a real community, almost like a learning school, a commuity which has all my respect which I am proud belonging to.
Serving space art gallery today as a CV is a great honor as formerly some of those below did too and served the best way they could.
Thank you for all tha

The tragedy of owning a motorcycle is that it sometimes must be “driven” instead of “ridden.” One must occasionally “drive” one’s bike to the store for a loaf of bread or to execute some other mundane activity unworthy of being a “motorcycle rider.” One is meant to ride, not drive, a bike—as it were a contentious beast forever being tamed. A bike should not be just a vehicle for the conveyance of bodies and materials. Riding should be transformative. A rider becomes one with the natural world being riven in twain by the wake of his bike’s passing. A rider becomes a living metaphor. A rid

A pleasant poem by Alchestbreach :3'Twas the night before christmasA pleasant poem by Alchestbreach :33 years ago in Personal More Like This
And all through the house
Not a creature was stirring
Not even a HOLY SHIT RADROACH
The children were sleeping, the parent's were too
The smell of dried dog shit stuck to their shoes
When a clickity slam and a bingity bosh
Crashed onto the roof
"What's that? Oh my gosh!"
Cindy Don Dinkface and Timmy Ton Mace
Ran down to the living room with excitement on their face
And who stood near the fire, a man all in red
He turned around and smiled
"You're gonna wish you were dead."
He pulled out a rifle and pushed down his pants
"Get ready for christmas, now let's do this dance."
He pushed and he puffed and he spread christmas cheer
All over Cindy's face and Timmy's little ear
The parent's came running, what a horrible sound
But they only found the two curled up on the ground
And so santa escaped on his magic jetpack

Alien Isolation Q&A with bradwright
Brad Wright, longtime deviant in the dA community, steps into the shoes (space boots) of Giger and Moebius as a concept designer for the Alien Isolation videogame. The game reportedly marks a return to the terror of the original “Alien” film in which scaring the audience to death was the goal, rather than the uncorking escalating levels of defensive firepower that defined the sequels.
Concept vs Visual AestheticRecently, on my piece I got into an interesting discussion that I find would be of importance to some of my watchers, despite the person being helpless in said discussion and just looking to waste their time.Concept vs Visual Aesthetic1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Basically, I encountered yet another person who cannot grasp the difference between concept and visual aesthetic, and is quick to brand any widespread concept as similar to some popular piece of media that utilized such a concept.
I personally define visual aesthetic in concept art as series of image elements, art techniques and stylistic patterns that unify an array of objects in art into a single, wholesome, stand-out microcosm which is recognized by these elements. It's what allows us to relate a piece of art to a certain time period ("that's so 80's!"), a culture ("typically oriental stuff!") or movement ("absolutely baroque!").
A concept, on the other hand, is a concept – an idea made into flesh. The concept might have a definitive visual aesthe

“The very meaninglessness of life forces man to create his own meaning. Children, of course, begin life with an untarnished sense of wonder, a capacity to experience total joy at something as simple as the greenness of a leaf; but as they grow older, the awareness of death and decay begins to impinge on their consciousness and subtly erode their joie de vivre, their idealism—and their assumption of immortality. As a child matures, he sees death and pain everywhere about him, and begins to lose faith in the ultimate goodness of man. But, if he’s reasonably strong—and lucky—he can emerge from this twilight of the soul into a rebirth of life’s elan. Both because of and in spite of h
Ex iphonisThe other day I was reading an article, where some celebrity-type of person – and for the love of guns, can't remember who it was – started profusely gushing how culture is being buried under an avalanche of technology-inspired neurosis', how personal communication, art, deep thought and creativity is drowned in the electric hiss of our Facebook statuses. How the "real things" become unimportant.Ex iphonis2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The tone of the article was preacher-like and nauseous. And even though I generally tended to follow the same thought process, something about it was off-putting, and I started to think about it in more focus.
And realized how this line of thinking is wrong.
The real problem is the human trait to think of the past in a far more idealized manner than we think about the present. It has to do with the way our brain functions, I guess – I'm no neuroscientist, but the information which I possess, points me to the fact that our mind cannot hold to the whole detailed picture o

In ancient tradition, Halloween was thought to be the night of the year when the realms of the living of the living and the dead came the closest together, enabling evil spirits and demons to hop over to our side to make mischief. For centuries the Church made very serious studies of what these hellacious creatures were actually thought to look like. Today, “creature imagining” is just a creative exercise and a way of having fun. Thank goodness none of our deviantART artists are drawing any of the subjects of this collection from live models. When you think Dungeons and Dragons, you may be inclined to picture a dark basement with broody, antisocial teens whispering spells and incantations over leather-bound tomes.
Perhaps D&D owes its cultural notoriety to the religious backlash against it in the 80s, as well as the over-the-top depiction of fantasy gaming and its players

Once upon a time…
Bbefore there was a boy wizard named Harry Potter or anything much was known about events occurring a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… there was the oral tradition of telling fairy tales, the first wonderful basic form of education in the lives of all the children in the world. Civilization was just getting underway with cities and towns and tiny hamlets taking shape in cleared patches of real estate carved out of the primeval European woods. In doing research on line it is

How to become better at art? How to gain necessary skill and how to stay motivated and inspired?
There are no right, or wrong answers to these questions, as we all are different and we have our own creative journeys - but here are some of my thoughts about the topic and I hope that they might be helpful.
1. Make art with your heart
Make the art that you enjoy to create. Make what resonates with you, put your heart in it (not literally) and it will show through your artworks.
2. Be consistent
Commit to yourself. Do something daily, even if it's just a sketch. Perhaps, do a study every morning or make speedpaintings. You may not see the progress at first, but you shouldn't get discouraged by that. Not every single one of your artworks has to be a masterpiece and it's totally okay to have a bad drawing every once
