Sadist - Chapter 4
Awakened by the sound of beeping; Esther opened her eye slowly. She tried to open her right eye; but it wouldn’t open. Bringing her hand up to her face, she realized that the right side of her face was covered in bandages. It hurt when she touched them, so she turned her attention to the room she was in.
Observing the style of the room, Esther quickly realized that she was in a hospital. The beeping noise was coming from a heart rate monitor next to her bed. She felt lightheaded, and noticed that a blood pack was attached to her arm; she must have lost a lot of blood. She started to feel drowsy, so she went back to sleep.

Later when Esther woke up, two policemen entered her room. They questioned her about who did it; questions such as appearance, weapon, and motive. Esther answered these questions with “I don’t remember; it all happened so fast.” The policemen soon left, realizing that the poor girl was probably traumatized from the attack and was blocking

So close yet so far. Esther sat on her bed, looking into the beady black eyes of the blue horse plush. The tall man, he always seemed to disappear when she wasn’t looking. She just needed an opportunity to speak to him, to see if he remembers that day. But he didn’t even seem to notice her when it happened. He might not even know what he’s done for her.
Esther sighed, she wanted to go look for him some more; but first thing’s first, she needed a job.
* * *
Fortunately, Esther managed to find a job after quite a bit of searching. She was hired to work as a waitress at a local bar. It was a decent job, not too difficult or extreme; although it was a bother to have to work around drunken men.
One night when working at the bar, there was someone new among the usual rabble of alcoholics. He was sipping a beer while looking through some files. He had brown hair and a dark brown jacket on. As she passed by, Esther kept attempting to look at the files and read a sentenc

Evening of the next day; Esther had just finished work. She walks outside to see Zehnder waiting for her, as he usually does. She smiles and walks towards him as he begins to walk down the sidewalk.
“Anything special today? Or just the usual walking around?” Esther asks, as she catches up to him.
“Yes, actually. Something more exciting, it should be fun.”
“Where are we going?”
“Again?” Esther sighed, a little disappointed.
“Don’t worry; it’s more exciting than those sorry asses that we dealt with yesterday. I think you’ll enjoy it. You got your hammer?”
“Yep! Right here!” Esther opened up her bag wide enough to see the top of the hammer in it, although she didn’t take it out; someone might see.
They walked along; Esther was excited for this special event. She felt that is was going to be a happy day for the two of them.
They arrived at the park as the sun was almost f

The tall man stood there, the yellow glaring eyes on his bandanna staring at her. He didn’t say anything, just looked. Esther saw him turn his head slightly, looking at the dead body of Ron, and then back to her. Finally her took the cigarette out of his mouth and flicked it to the ground.
“H-how long have you been standing there?” Esther asked. The tall man stared at her; she was beginning to have a small doubt that he even could talk at all. But then he uttered a short laugh and responded.
“About the time you started shattering the bones in his left hand.” He laughed again, and then was silent. He stared at her, as if waiting for something.
“Well?” He said impatiently.
“Huh?” Esther looked up at the tall, intimidating man.
“You got my attention. What do you want? One does not simply follow around a sadistic being without wanting something.” The amusement had gone out of his voice.
“Well, do you remember me?

It’s late, and dark. There are hardly any people around, but still Zehnder walked around like he normally does. Esther is following him, joyful that she can finally be with him. Zehnder walked silently, and when he passes by anyone he only turns his head slightly to look at them; they never notice. He seemed to be looking for a worthy candidate.
After walking around for about an hour and a half, Zehnder finally sees someone that he feels like killing. The person seems to be young, maybe still or just out of college. They were walking a large dog, a German Shepard.
Zehnder muttered under his breath “What the hell kind of idiot walks a dog at this hour?” He began to walk across the street; they were still a little ways away from the dog walker. Esther began to follow him, but he turned around “No; you wait here.” Esther stopped obediently and waited.
Zehnder reached the other side of the street and began to approach the man with the dog. The man didn’t

The next day, Esther is wondering about the tall man again. She thinks she may have approached too strongly, but she was determined to talk with him again. She had the day off today, so she planned on looking for him again.

Esther walked around the park that she had seen the tall man in. It was still early in the day, but she wanted to see if she could find him. She passed by several people, but not the tall man. She thought she saw him once, but it turned out she was wrong. Plenty of times she smelled smoke, but they were just regular people smoking.
Then she decided to go deeper, Esther found the little dirt path that he was walking the other night. She followed it into the woods to look around. She didn’t want to get lost, so she stayed on the trail. Esther searched the trees and looked for a sign of him, but she found none.
She saw several animals, which was nice; a large stag, a frisky squirrel or two. Esther decided to try the more urban areas. She walked out of the f

It was a normal night. Zehnder was walking around, Esther was following. So far nothing too exciting had happened. They were walking in silence, and there weren’t many people out either; it was only about eight o’clock.
They were passing by the park, and Zehnder stopped. He motioned for her to stay quiet, and then entered the park. Staying out of the light, Zehnder looked around. Esther followed, trying to not make any noises; such as stepping on a dead leaf.
Zehnder looked over towards a park bench; someone was over there. He pointed at the young woman sitting on the bench, signaling that she was his next target. Esther expected him to simply go up behind her and smash her head in, but instead he walked away. Esther followed, confused, but interested.
Zehnder walked a little ways into the woods; far enough that a scream would be hard to hear, but still close enough to the park that it was easy to get to.
“I’ve seen that girl at the park before with her boyfrien

Esther lied face down on her bed. Her face was red from crying, and she was still sobbing a little. What Zehnder had said kept playing in her mind. She tried to block it out; but it wouldn’t go away. She tried to tell herself that he was wrong. But that was the worst part. She knew he was right.
She could have had a normal happy life; playing with the other little children, growing up with friends, being in a home with happy parents. Parents who were alive. She thought about all of the things she had missed. Learning how to ride a bike with her father, learning how to sew with her mother, special moments like family vacations. But no. Zehnder killed her mother. There were to be no more happy family times. Only loneliness.
Esther rolled onto her back and stared at the ceiling. What would she do now? What could she do now? All she had to go on was the work at the bar, but even with that, it was hardly anything. She couldn’t go to college either.
Esther sighed. Now all there w

With no relatives living nearby, Esther was taken to an orphanage. It was a nice little place; there was nothing really wrong about it. Although many of the others noticed that Esther always seemed to be preoccupied. She was always either drawing pictures with crayons, or playing with that blue horse plush.
Several couples that had wanted to adopt a child selected Esther to be a part of their family. Esther was a cute and well behaved little girl, a good kid. However, they changed their minds when they saw her artwork. The subject of nearly all of her pictures was that tall man. Strange barbed tendrils branching out of his back and a frightening grin on his face.
These images scared many of the other children, and the caretakers often asked Esther to stop drawing him. To this, Esther humored them a bit by drawing normal pictures; a brown dog in a field of grass, an orange striped cat in a tree, a gray mouse sitting on a chunk of yellow cheese. But she always resorted back to her normal

In the darkness of the early day, Esther walked quickly. It was almost twilight, the sun seemed like it would emerge from the horizon in a little bit. She sped up, that memory playing in her mind. That regained memory, and the memory of Zehnder the last time she saw him.
Esther looked around; but found no one. No cars, no people, not even a stray cat.
She looked around for anything; any clue or sign at all. Still, nothing. But then, finally, she found something. She saw a small spatter of blood, and then another, and another. She followed this trail of blood to a small parking lot next to a convenience store, only to be greeted by a gruesome mess.
Blood was all over the place. Esther couldn’t even tell how many people there were, they were all broken up. Blood, flesh, and gore covered the ground, in many places you couldn’t even see the asphalt underneath. Faces had been smashed against the wall, arms had been torn off and tossed away, and bones had been crushed and crushed

The six policemen pointed their guns at Zehnder, a little unsure of what to do, as they were in the presence of this intimidating being.
“Hands where I can see ‘em!” One of them shouted out.
Zehnder snarled at them.
“Esther, stay behind me.” He said quietly to Esther, and stood in front of her.
“We can take them on, right?” Esther said back to him quietly, and took her hammer out of her bag, “They’re not so tough!”
“No. Stay behind me.” Zehnder took her hammer from her and tossed it to the side.
“Fine.” Esther grumbled, but obeyed.
“I said hands up! . . . You!” The cop yelled.
Zehnder growled. He reached up and pulled his bandanna down, revealing his blank face. The skin around where his mouth should be ripped open, baring his crimson teeth. Black blood poured from the ripped skin and down his face.
“W-what the fuck is that thing!?” One of the cops shouted, frightened.

“Zehnder . . ?”
Esther blinked her eye open slowly. She gazed around her surroundings, feeling light headed and numb.
For a moment she thought she saw Zehnder again; killing those cops, ripping them apart one by one. And all the bullets flying towards her, and all the blood, and finally the wail of the ambulance as it sped towards them; then a blinding white light, and then nothing.
Esther looked around more, trying to clear her head. She saw white walls and odd machines. It was all just a memory; she was no longer in the alley, no longer covered in blood, and no longer with Zehnder.
She tried to sit up, to get a better look around her, but a sharp pain in her side made her fall back down again. She felt confused, tired, and disoriented, so she lied back down and went to sleep.

The sun was in the sky, now fully out. Esther and Zehnder had been standing there, watching it rise. It was nice to not have that hatred and those lies between them anymore.
“I guess I should be going now, work and stuff.” She started into the woods.
Zehnder turned to look at her.
“See you again, then; after work, as usual?”
Esther smiled at him.
“After work, as usual.”

Max whimpered. He was lying on the bed, same as when Esther left. Even though he had been alone on the streets, he didn’t like being alone now. He cocked his head to one side, and then the other; his slightly large ears flopping to the side as he did. He stared at the door in anticipation, worried.
Max kept having the awful feeling that she would never return again. He didn’t like being alone, and didn’t want to be. He rolled over on his back and stared at the door; trying to make it open through pure will.

In her hands Esther held a plush toy of a horse; its deep blue color of its soft material matched her beautiful eyes. Her hair was a silky black color and flowed down her back. She got her hair from her mother, and her eyes were from her father.
Esther’s mother died when she was only three years old. She couldn’t remember how she had died, but she could still remember her loving face and lovely voice singing a lullaby to her. Her mother and father used to sing her to sleep, but ever since her mother had died, her father never sang that song again. There were too many memories in those sweet verses.
Father was the only one she had in this world, and she was perfectly fine with that. They walked to the preschool together and back every day, sometimes he woul

Memories, they seem easy to hold on to, yet in reality, are fragile. Like delicate glass or china, memories are precious; yet, even something small could shatter them all. They are precious treasures that one keeps to oneself; although some may be burdens, others are beautiful moments that will always be in memory, long after the moment has passed.
And yet still, they seem like they would be forever, even though once they are gone, they seem like they were never even there.

The sun slowly went down the sky and hid behind the horizon, taking its light with it. Soon there was darkness, but the darkness was pierced by the shining light of the moon and the many stars surrounding it.

Kagekao approached the city. He looked around to make sure there were no humans nearby, and entered it. It felt odd, disobeying his parents like this. He’d never really done it before, but right now he felt like he had to.
He climbed up to the top of a building and looked around for the shinigami. Seeing no one, he continued the search deeper into the city. He saw a few humans, but avoided them. Climbing along the rooftops, he continued his search.

After a while of searching; he saw someone walking along the sidewalk. They had three large pairs of wings on their back, and a mask and faceplate on. Kage climbed closer silently. He was disappointed when he saw that it wasn’t Scollex.
This shinigami had black hair and a black and gold suit, along with the fact that his large feathered wings were a light gold instead of white. Even though it wasn’t Scollex, Kage decided to follow him.
This shinigami walked along normally. Kagekao was confused when he saw humans walki

Kagekao awoke to a bright but dimming light shining through the window. He had fallen asleep, and had slept through the day. Now it was at the end of the day, and the sun was almost finished setting.
Kage sat up and yawned. Looking around the room, he saw that he was still alone. A big part of him had hoped that he would wake up to find someone else here, but there was no one.
He took the blanket off of him and stood up. Kage walked over to the window and looked outside. The sun had dropped below the horizon and the light in the sky was fading to darkness.
He opened up the window and poked his head out, looking down at the streets. There were a few cars, and one or two humans walking along the street. Kage climbed out and onto the wall, shutting the window behind him. He climbed up to the roof and pulled himself up.
Looking up at the sky, there was a brilliant half-moon surrounded by a few stars. One by one, more stars came into view. Soon, the sky was full of wondrous stars. Kage gaze

Kagekao lied on the floor of the room. He groaned and turned his head, opening his eyes slowly. He looked around in confusion.
He put his hand to his head and moaned; he had a painful headache. Taking the hand away from his face, he saw a few stains of blood on his fingers. He realized that his head was wrapped in bandages, which had become soaked with blood in a few spots.
Kage looked down, he was lying on the floor and wrapped in a blanket. Looking to the side, he saw something lying next to him. Kage sat up and looked at it; it was an odd mask, half black and half white.
Kage picked up the mask and looked at it. Something in his mind told him that it was his, and that he should wear it. Kage put on the mask. The white side of the mask caught the subtle effect of his eyes taking away light in confusion. This effect was amplified and reflected by the mask, which now had a confused expression on the white side of it.
He also noticed that he was wearing a black and white striped scarf.

Kage watched from the shadows as Scollex snuck up on, and then killed a few more people. It was interesting to watch, even though Kage felt he wanted to do some of the killing as well. He didn’t interfere, because he didn’t want to make Scollex angry or irritated.
Scollex began to move on, and Kage followed.

The human screamed as wings emerged from Scollex’s back and into the air. Before they had a chance to run, Scollex’s arm morphed into a claw and he grabbed them. Morphing his other hand into a claw as well, he slashed the human across the face and neck and dropped them to the ground.
Scollex’s wings folded, and his claws changed back into hands as he watched the human bleed out and die on the ground. This was the fourth kill of the evening, and he was contemplating whether or not to go out and find another unsuspecting human to stalk and kill.
Kage was perched on top of the streetlamp, watching the bloody scene. After the human was dead, and he n

Scollex’s body had burned up into sparks and ashes, which drifted away on the wind and disappeared out of sight. Yuki picked up the silver daggers which remained, and then ran over to Kage and Kurai.

Kage sighed. He climbed further up the roof so that he could no longer hear his parents; he didn’t like to hear them so sad.
Kage climbed to the highest part of the roof and sat down; he felt like he needed some alone time to think. He felt afraid; he didn’t know what his parents were planning, but it didn’t sound very easy.
He closed his eyes and listened to the sounds of the night. The wind blowing through the grass and the trees, crickets here and there, things of that sort. They were calming and peaceful, something nice.
Kage opened his eyes, and thought he saw something in the woods. He grew alert and looked over in the direction where he thought he had seen it. It had been small and subtle, but there was something.

A few minutes after Scollex had disappeared, Kage continued laughing. But in a short amount of time, the amused feeling faded; only to be replaced by pain.

He heard a door open, along with a few windows, and voices were heard; humans would arrive soon. Panicking, Kage grabbed the wall that he had fallen onto and strained to climb up. He managed to scale the building and reach the roof, although he left a trail of blood smeared onto the wall.
Kage left a few seconds before a human arrived to see what the ruckus was about. Still dripping blood, Kage difficulty made his way back to the old building with the room. He climbed the side, and then opened and entered the room through the window.

The full moon was up in the sky, shinning down on the city. It was a typical spring night in Japan. Kagekao sat atop a building.
