Helpful Habits for CommissionersA lot of people have been asking me to write up something on the topic of taking and pricing commissions like I did with conventions, so here you go!Helpful Habits for Commissioners10 months ago in Personal More Like This
So what is a commission? If you didn't already know, a commission in way I will be discussing is when a person pay for an artist to draw them something. Neato, right? Money for art, couldn't be better.
Well there are a few catches to this art thing professionally and non-professionally; especially on an amateur level. First off, you wont get paid nearly what you should be getting paid...so if your motivation is money... you should pick a different field of interest. Second, you need to build your people skills. Third money management is key. Fourth, time management or cry in a corner.
Let's discuss the first point, not getting paid enough! Illustrators and professional artists in the industry are currently getting paid the same rates as they were 50 years ago... the exact same. Inflation has not touched the art field so we are making less

I just uploaded a new tutorial, the first in the series, all about making 2D tiles and tile sets for games!
Things covered in this episode:
- The anatomy of a basic tileset
- Setting up and using Photoshop's grid system for making tiles
- Using Photoshop's Offset filter to make tiles seamless
- Adapting a tiling texture into a tileset
- Some results of a finished basic tileset
- Thoughts and some opinions!
- I forgot to master the audio. Sorry if I sound just a tad muffly!
Also recently uploaded by Tyler Edlin, this video about perspective drawing where I also have a segment about how to make perspective grids in Photoshop!
By the way, have you been paying attention to my tumblr? I post stuff like this more often there, as I only see my DA journal as a means to communicate about mo

First of all, I want to apologize for not responding to you guys. I get piles of comments and notes on this account.
I know I've been getting many questions via PM and notes on DA and Facebook, but I haven't been able to answer them all. I do read them so keep commenting and sending notes!
I would like to have the opportunity for all to ask me common questions about me or anything art and game related here. I'll look through the comments and update this Journal Entry with new Q&A.
Only request is that you ask some relevant questions and not something too personal and inappropriate.
With that said, ask away!
1. What type of Program do you use? What tablet do you use?I use Adobe Photoshop CS5. I have tried couple other programs like SAI, Alias Sketchbook Pro, and Painter X, but photoshop has all the tools I need to create art.I have Wacom Intuos 5 and Wacome Cintiq 22UX mounted on ergotron arm.

Let's accelerate a little bit, and assume that now you're in the business and have a pretty good groove going. While the core principles are still paramount to anything else, here are some quick one-shot tidbits of information that will assuredly save your bacon.
Back up everything, including the backups.
When working digitally, it's so easy to accidentally delete something off your hard drive and be unable to get it back. I've done this a few times myself. Even had entire hard drives fail on me. But it has been a very, very long time since the last time I had to redo an image from the start. Sure, I've had crashes that put me back an hour, I've merged layers together in a manner that ruins my work flow and makes the file unusable. But fixing these issues isn't nearly as painful

Hey guys! Here's my FAQ! Of course, most of you already know all there is to know about my artworks, but this is gonna be an easy way to link people to all questions related to my art, and what's better, you ask the questions! XD Thats right, I have filled some generic stuff here so that's a place to start, but I would love it if you do the asking and I update the FAQ accordingly xDD
Rules for asking questions:
Please refrain from asking me questions about personal life that are too personal. For example, What is your favorite color? is a valid question, whereas Where exactly do you live? is not xD I just like to keep my personal stuff personal.
Dont ask me for tutorials. ah, well, the simple answer is, I will if I can. And surely, in the future, I will. ^_^

Some PeopleLol my friend just showed me this string of tumblr posts about this artist ranting over one of her commissioners and I just kinda lost it. Seriously, an artist complaining about her commissioners shouldn't get commissions. That person commissioning you is your fan, not just your fan, a REALLY BIG fan willing to pay you to draw. There are a thousand million other artists but they chose you. Some People11 months ago in Personal More Like This
To me a commission is the biggest compliment ever. Some one likes my art well enough they are willing to pay me to do what I love. I don't care if I have the pickest, most complaining, whiniest commissioner ever. The fact they wanted my artwork is good enough for me to tolerate any level of shit. Sure more difficult commissioners who want a thousand changes I might charge extra for the extra work but I sure as hell am going to be polite and kind to them! I would never complain about them openly.

ANIME CURRICULUM?If there were an Art University in America that decided to introduce a "ANIME PRINCIPLES" class in their animation program, A class that would not only cover the art of creating TV production/feature anime, art history and it's understanding, but taught by, say-- Peter Chung-- with special periodical class visits throughout the semester by Japanese Animation Directors from Gainax, Madhouse, Studio Pierrot, Bones, Ghibli and Production I.G. ( with english translators of course) with the final thesis of a 3 minute short to be shown to them for judging. And the top graduates were to be awarded and a year internship at any of these studios,ANIME CURRICULUM?2 years ago in Personal More Like This

An ObservationIt's really funny to me the interactions I have with people in varying environments and the different reactions I receive from people based on their perceptions. Take for instance Deviantart, which I find most interesting. Some of you create an entire persona for me based on my art style, skill level, number of page views, and watcher count. I know for a fact that there are some of you who have the misconception that I believe I am above common folk and the very air I walk on is blessed. Some people also think I'm very cool and talented and you wish you could be me. Little do you know I am the biggest dork to have ever graced this planet, second only to the dorkiest of dorks Bella. True I do not respond to every comment, but I try to respond to the comments that aren't one of the following: "Cute!" "Love it!" "Awesome Work!". DONT GET ME WRONG THOSE COMMENTS STILL MAKE ME SMILE LIKE A PUPPY WITH A NEW BONE TO CHEW! However, all I can really say to them is "Thanks!". Myself and imaginary-rose have complied a few tips to help beginning writers who want to start commissions but unsure of how to take the first step.A Beginner's Guide :: Literary Commissions1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The Important Things
The biggest thing you need to consider before taking commissions is "How well can I write another's ideas?". This is a big thing because if you're not able to put your own into words that well, it may be challenging to put another's on paper. We suggest taking requests to see how well you work under a bit of pressure. If you can handle it well and get it done within a reasonable amount of time, you're a prime candidate to start selling your skills.

Animation/Art/Career/etc. Q and A?I've been working since graduating more than 4 years now, and I've improved a lot over these years. It's a very different environment from college to professional studio work. I have friends that graduated same year as me but some quit animation entirely and some are still trying to find an entry level job. I flew out to LA from NYC 1 month after graduating, for an internship at Titmouse, when there were merely 20-ish people around. I was hired after two months of testing, and my first job was a clean-up artist/animation in betweenner.Animation/Art/Career/etc. Q and A?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
a little side story, I signed up for "animation" major thinking it's 3d for game cinematics, and it turned out to be on paper, stayed 4 years, 3d seemed pretty technical as to learning the programs and know how to use it. Drawing is more... fun... and direct. Then I watched animation films like Ghost in the Shell, Jin Roh, Ninja Scroll... etc.
If anyone would like to ask any animation related questions pls comment below and I'd be happy to answer them.

for those who give up easily ... (by Azusa Ushio)Shiro Kotobukifor those who give up easily ... (by Azusa Ushio)1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Although Shiro Kotobuki became paralyzed from the neck down in a motorcycle accident 22 years ago, the illustrator refused to give up and didn't want to become a burden to his family.
So, he reached deep down inside himself and discovered a creative side, a talent he never knew he had.
Today, holding a stylus in his mouth, Kotobuki, real name Hiroshi Kobayashi, uses a graphics tablet to draw illustrations of "moe," fictional perfect young girls, at his home in the city's Tonemachi district.
He also published a textbook on illustrations two years ago to inspire disabled people.
"I want to find more meaning in things I do," Kotobuki, 44, said. "I want to share my courage with other disabled people."
A former motorcycle enthusiast, Kotobuki was a senior at Tokyo University of Science in the fall of 1991 when he had an accident on his way home on a motorcycle. He injured his cervical spine.
He initially thought it would heal soon. But no matter how much time went by, his lim

Too expensive, too cheapEdit: Just wanted to add one more thought.Too expensive, too cheap5 days ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Remember that some kids here are just playing. They can either draw for practice and earn nothing or practice by drawing commissions for small amount of money. Even a small gratification like that is a boost for someone who's just starting out and encourage them to get better. I remember when I was starting out, nobody except my two friends would want even a free request from me, so I know the feeling "at least someone out there wants it".
In my opinion teen artists do not pose much threat to professionals who are way faster and more skilled than them. Moreover, they have school and homework, so there is a limited time they can spend on drawing. Am I wrong?
Some complain that artists have too high prices. Surprisingly however, others complain that teen artists ruin the market with their cheap art. People who complain about that often advise to get a real part-time job at McDonald's or something instead of selling art.
But to me this sounds

Not a creature was stirring, not even a ghost
I am three thousand miles away from my home
But with all of this joy why feel alone?
The library is closed, the service club's dead,
No movies to play, I am losing my head
A little to drink will bring me some cheer
There is not a joint open to buy one cold beer
All the happy voices I hear in this place
The last two I met fell flat on their face
I can tell they have love for all within sight
Just drop a nickel, you'll see a good fight
It's the same old story time after time
What men will do for only a dime
The guard is walking his post, his arm torn
And cursing the day he ever was born
He thinks of the past and all of the bliss
They told him he'd have if he would enlist
We can't go to sleep when all you hear is a bam
This loveliest Christmas, I don't give a damn
What this all boils down to is simple to say
I am in the U.S. Army and that's all the way
