Helpful Habits for CommissionersA lot of people have been asking me to write up something on the topic of taking and pricing commissions like I did with conventions, so here you go!Helpful Habits for Commissioners2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So what is a commission? If you didn't already know, a commission in way I will be discussing is when a person pay for an artist to draw them something. Neato, right? Money for art, couldn't be better.
Well there are a few catches to this art thing professionally and non-professionally; especially on an amateur level. First off, you wont get paid nearly what you should be getting paid...so if your motivation is money... you should pick a different field of interest. Second, you need to build your people skills. Third money management is key. Fourth, time management or cry in a corner.
Let's discuss the first point, not getting paid enough! Illustrators and professional artists in the industry are currently getting paid the same rates as they were 50 years ago... the exact same. Inflation has not touched the art field so we are making less

First of all, I want to apologize for not responding to you guys. I get piles of comments and notes on this account.
I know I've been getting many questions via PM and notes on DA and Facebook, but I haven't been able to answer them all. I do read them so keep commenting and sending notes!
I would like to have the opportunity for all to ask me common questions about me or anything art and game related here. I'll look through the comments and update this Journal Entry with new Q&A.
Only request is that you ask some relevant questions and not something too personal and inappropriate.
With that said, ask away!
1. What type of Program do you use? What tablet do you use?I use Adobe Photoshop CS5. I have tried couple other programs like SAI, Alias Sketchbook Pro, and Painter X, but photoshop has all the tools I need to create art.I have Wacom Intuos 5 and Wacome Cintiq 22UX mounted on ergotron arm.

Too expensive, too cheapEdit: Just wanted to add one more thought.Too expensive, too cheap9 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Remember that some kids here are just playing. They can either draw for practice and earn nothing or practice by drawing commissions for small amount of money. Even a small gratification like that is a boost for someone who's just starting out and encourage them to get better. I remember when I was starting out, nobody except my two friends would want even a free request from me, so I know the feeling "at least someone out there wants it".
In my opinion teen artists do not pose much threat to professionals who are way faster and more skilled than them. Moreover, they have school and homework, so there is a limited time they can spend on drawing. Am I wrong?
Some complain that artists have too high prices. Surprisingly however, others complain that teen artists ruin the market with their cheap art. People who complain about that often advise to get a real part-time job at McDonald's or something instead of selling art.
But to me this sounds
An ObservationIt's really funny to me the interactions I have with people in varying environments and the different reactions I receive from people based on their perceptions. Take for instance Deviantart, which I find most interesting. Some of you create an entire persona for me based on my art style, skill level, number of page views, and watcher count. I know for a fact that there are some of you who have the misconception that I believe I am above common folk and the very air I walk on is blessed. Some people also think I'm very cool and talented and you wish you could be me. Little do you know I am the biggest dork to have ever graced this planet, second only to the dorkiest of dorks Bella. True I do not respond to every comment, but I try to respond to the comments that aren't one of the following: "Cute!" "Love it!" "Awesome Work!". DONT GET ME WRONG THOSE COMMENTS STILL MAKE ME SMILE LIKE A PUPPY WITH A NEW BONE TO CHEW! However, all I can really say to them is "Thanks!". HOW TO FEEL FULFILLED AS AN ARTIST"When you buy from an independent artist you are buying more than just a painting or a novel or a song. You are buying hundreds of hours of experimentation and thousands of failures. You are buying days, weeks, months, years of frustration and moments of pure joy. You are buying nights of worry about paying the rent, having enough money to eat, having enough money to feed the children, the birds, ...the dog. You aren't just buying a thing - you are buying a piece of heart, part of a soul, a private moment in someone's life. Most importantly, you are buying that artist more time to do something they are truly passionate about; something that makes all of the above worth the fear and doubt; something that puts the life into living." - Rebekah Joy PlettHOW TO FEEL FULFILLED AS AN ARTIST3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Animation/Art/Career/etc. Q and A?I've been working since graduating more than 4 years now, and I've improved a lot over these years. It's a very different environment from college to professional studio work. I have friends that graduated same year as me but some quit animation entirely and some are still trying to find an entry level job. I flew out to LA from NYC 1 month after graduating, for an internship at Titmouse, when there were merely 20-ish people around. I was hired after two months of testing, and my first job was a clean-up artist/animation in betweenner.Animation/Art/Career/etc. Q and A?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
a little side story, I signed up for "animation" major thinking it's 3d for game cinematics, and it turned out to be on paper, stayed 4 years, 3d seemed pretty technical as to learning the programs and know how to use it. Drawing is more... fun... and direct. Then I watched animation films like Ghost in the Shell, Jin Roh, Ninja Scroll... etc.
If anyone would like to ask any animation related questions pls comment below and I'd be happy to answer them.

Good Characterdesign?wow, its been a while since the last journal updateGood Characterdesign?1 month ago in Personal More Like This
and i just wanted to all of you expressing you opinion on that digital/traditional thing so thank you >u<
Lately i am working on a shortstory and the basic plot is done..but i have extreme difficulities when it comes to dialogues. I think it might be connected with the fact that my characters are not really well thought out yet.
But honestly i can't really tell what a well thought character looks like....when i think about characters like sora of kingdom hearts i would say i really like it, but i guess i think so just because i am used to it and it reminds me of my childhood :'D
same goes with Allen of D.Gray-man.
I could not really say those characters are super authentic, because the problems they are dealing with are a bit far outside of my everyday life, so i just accept the way they are acting xD

Hackers on dA [UPDATED]EDIT: DEVIANTART SEEMS TO HAVE BLOCKED THE SCRIPT NOW!Hackers on dA [UPDATED]3 years ago in Personal More Like This
These two people are also innocent people that got hacked, so no hate on them please ♥
Thank you everyone for warning people and keeping dA safe ♥
Recently, there's been a link circulating on deviantART that automatically deactivates your account. Somehow, the site was hacked into, and now if you visit :iconneomoti:, :iconPlushYumi: or :icongary-niger: profile and type in your username and password when it "logs you out", you're pretty much screwed.
The link itself does you no harm whatsoever, and you can browse the profile all you want, but when the artificial login screen appears, do not type in your personal information. This gives them access to your account, which will be deactivated, and it's simply bad news altogether.
Thank :iconkit: for the heads up. She let me know about the link, and I tracked it down to try it out for myself and gather some more information on it.

The Important Things
The biggest thing you need to consider before taking commissions is "How well can I write another's ideas?". This is a big thing because if you're not able to put your own into words that well, it may be challenging to put another's on paper. We suggest taking requests to see how well you work under a bit of pressure. If you can handle it well and get it done within a reasonable amount of time, you're a prime candidate to start selling your skills.

They don't even know their son
They think he's sweet and gentle
When he's monster with a gun
Constantly he bullies me

Yet I'm the one getting punished
All this is just to much
He chokes me and won't let go
So I punch him and move his hand
I get grounded for a week
I just don't understand...

It teaches me to choke to death
That's what I learned that day....
He kicks me and he yells
I scream for help, they ignore
I walk away in tears, they yelled
Told me to go back through that horrid door
When back he called me names
They ignored the words he said
So since he's oh so "innocent"
I guess its time to just drop dead
