How To Price Your Art
There is a saying from Paul Scriven about pricing that targets freelancers & designers:
"Work either for full price or for free, but never for cheap."
I think there is much truth in it, because even a cheap price has it´s price. Sometimes cheap can be good to get you some reward as a beginner, but the hardest part is then to climb up the ladder.
The illustration below pretty much sums it up:
Thats specifically the way I work and what I suggest to students.
The question always is how to raise a price with a client, once you are good enough to actually charge more?
There is not one universal key answer to that question, but first off, it is important to know what keeps

There are some things I would be glad, someone would have told me earlier...
Marketing is such a thing - since I´m freelancing 5 years now it is save to say that is no accident that I´m happily blessed with the "just right" clients and it all boils down to be due to authentic marketing. Honestly- I embrace everything that has to do with it, below you find my write up to get a better understanding of what it is all about.
I always found interest in psychology and marketing but when I jumped on the freelancing train 5 years ago I especially embraced anything that I could find to help me understand, use and practice marketing as a way to keep myself busy with work that I love to do and to collaborate with people who respect what I do.
In the process I learned much from many different experts and in this post I will forward what I´ve learn
The Pitfalls of Speed PaintingI've been meaning to write about this for a while now, but recently a video popped on up Ctrl+Paint about the same topic and it encouraged me to finally talk about it. It's a practice that's been misconstrued and misunderstood for a while now, so I wanted to help people get a proper understanding on the subject. The Pitfalls of Speed Painting4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Speed painting has been something of a fad for 4 or 5 years now, even back when I was first starting digital work. Like many artists out there, I thought, "Sweet, I can do really cool work, really fast!" And like many artists out there, in the back of my head I was probably thinking, "This is easier than learning the normal way!"
Well, here's the main problem in regards to speed painting. Any of those really cool, realistic and well done speed paintings you see are done by professionals who have been painting for years and years. These a

Well, there are a number of sites out there that I've come across over the years that help with that sort of thing. They pull stock images and such from different sources and give you a randomizer and timer and other features, or show anatomical structures that you can manipulate. Below I'll list some of the ones I've come across that might help you. Some of them have the same images, so you can probably just pick a couple favorites.
An oldie but goodie. I've used this site for ages and it's only gotten better. On it you'll find 3D models of poses that you can rotate around, and they all show the musculature. You can browse the poses, or use the random viewer, or the timed v

In my profession, I spend most of my time sitting and that cumulative time is bad for my health. In an effort to incorporate fitness into my life, I'm doing sketches while maintaining a 'wall squat'. #wallsquatart is what I am calling it and I hope others may find it as motivating as I do. I can only detail the drawing for as long as I can maintain the pose, and wanting to create a great drawing pushes me to draw through the burn. Though unusual, it's a small step that I've found very inspiring.

However, Stash is so much more than a simple revamp. Your Stash on deviantART will become home to all your images, writing... everything! Here's how it works:
You can drag and drop multiple files into your Stash, quickly and easily.

I am too lazy to write a "long" version so I'll throw out tips from time to time. I have been asked for advice many times so here's some advice now! Follow my facebook to get more info!
1. Once you have a "very good" customer base, try putting into your commission agreement that you do not accept rushed ordered and can take as long as you'd like.
This is risky because you're not making promises to your commissioners. In order to "keep" my customer base, while still not putting pressure on myself, I "reward" patient commissioners by simply doing detailed coloring. The secret to having this agreement be successful is making your final drawing "worth the wait", however long that may be for you is your decision.
2. Time management & pricing. This is just something I do, I spent around 5-10 minutes roughing sketching a comm. I do not spend

Getting started with concept art and landscapesHi guys,Getting started with concept art and landscapes2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've received a lot of notes from people who are interested in getting into concept art and/or landscapes and I always struggle to come up with advice that doesn't seem awfully confusing. I can't say I'm a veteran in this industry, but since people keep asking me and I do have experience, here's my 2 cents (PSA: by no means a comprehensive guide or the absolute truth). I am very humble when it comes to learning this stuff and I never know enough myself, but these are some of my thoughts that came up when a student sent me a note today;
My best advice is to climb to the tree from the root and accept that there's no shortcut.
Concept art is a very loose term. It can mean anything from sketching characters, enemies, vehicles and objects to doing detailed plans of level visual design or landscapes. Game concept art can also serve a lot of purposes. Most of the time the most crucial purpose of concept art is to communicate (a) game designers' idea of how a game looks

Before you start reading my journal, I want to let you know a few things.
My examples about sexism mostly based on my own personal experience, but not all of them. Still I'm going to use myself and my own works to represent certain cases and explain my point of view without unnecessarily involving somebody else.
Also I'm not going to write about the problem of sexism in game art here , I chose the title to fool you and make you read the important things I want to say about another problem starting with sexism in game art and art in general.
Now you are prepared so we shall begin.
Either we want it or not, this topic became a kind of fashion and is everywhere, you don't need to actually look for it, it will find you. You will see it, you will hear about it, you will experience it, and you will form an opinion about it. As a woman I experience sexism on a daily level, and I'm not thinking about small th

How to use DPI properly. This is one of the biggest problems I see other people running into, and I've had to explain it a countless number of times. The bummer is that it's really quite simple, but if you don't know how it works it's easy to get mixed up.How to use DPI properly.5 years ago in Personal More Like This
The following is more or less what I'm going to tell you, but in a less comprehensive fashion. So if these 2 main points make enough sense to you, then you can decide if you need more information and explanation:
You only need to set DPI when working with actual dimensions like inches or centimeters, etc. So if you're working directly in pixels already, it's useless.
Therefore, the only time you really need to set the DPI is when you need to ensure good print quality, and know your real world dimensions but not the exact pixels. The program will set the pixels for you based off the other information.
First and foremost, you REALLY don't need to work in real world dimensions such as inches or centimeters unless
Is college the best thing for you?I don't know how many people out there know this, but I never finished college. I attended for roughly 3 years, but it eventually got too expensive for what I was getting out of it. So, I dropped out.Is college the best thing for you?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
At the time, I was slightly ashamed, but it turned out to be for the best. There's a bit of a stigma attached to those who don't follow through on their education, but in the art world, a degree itself often isn't worth the paper it's printed on. In my relatively short career, I've never once been asked if I attended college or even if I have a degree, and I'm not the only one who'll tell you that. Your portfolio and experience are what speaks for you. You can finish art school, but if your portfolio is no good, the jobs won’t come.
Today, because I chose this route, I’m debt free and I've worked for companies like Lionsgate, Warner Bros. and the Moving Picture Company, opportunities I might not have had if I stayed in school. Now, I'm not saying don't pursue a college e

OK, here is the thing:
1. If u guys think my design is too slutty and not useful for battle, go make one urselves. If u dont like the design, u can simply walk away because ur complaining here makes no sense to me and I wont even listen. U have ur own hands and brains so why not take some time and start drawing ur own ideas?
2. Looking for realism? Fine. Tell me, in FPS games, once u get hit, as long as u stay clear for a while, u recover with full life. Why the hell does that happen? Tell me how Bayonetta fight with those high heels? Tell me how can prince of Persia running on the wall and jumping around like crazy? Tell me why when ur character lost hp and simply a potion can immediately heal him up?
3. If u keep complaining around about most of the game designer make the armor design useless, why don't u do s

Hello guys! This is iDJPanda on the topic of "Commissions"! Bear with me though. I've never given a commission in my life but I know how people portray their commissions to get them! I hope this article may be of some help to you guys.
Setting up commissions can be hard and making it appealing to customers even harder but there are a few things you can do to any passerby make a double take to see what you are producing! (This is going over how to write a commission journal but can also tie into the widget as well! )
One of the most important steps in this process is providing examples
If you're like me, you LOVE examples. And you ask, "Why are examples so important?"
Providing example works of what you are commissioning leaves the commissioner an idea of what kind of style and quality of artwork they will receiving. It's basically the sampler of the main dish. You don't want to provide "na

Wow, so up till today I always found the "Please don't trace, redistribute, copy etc" was unnecessary in a lot of comments since people are going to do what they're going to do no matter what right? But wow lo and behold I found this comment in the disqus section of Artist Confessions. Basically what it's saying is due to DA's rules if the artist doesn't say to not trace then they cannot penalize reported tracers. At least that's what I'm drawing from

Art sitesI had a long discussion with a friend a little while ago about art sites and Deviantart.Art sites3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Personally I think DA is a wonderful site but it's not really an art site. It's essentially an enormous social network based on art. It's a formidable way to showcase your work, to get exposure and to build communities... It's filled with some very inspirational pieces, and is a great place way to meet friends.
But... the fact is, if you are an artist and you are really serious about improving your art to eventually become a professional, you won't improve very much if you stay there only. DA's format is not really meant for that... Most of the time you will get friendly thumbs up and warm pats in the back. While it feels nice, this is not what make you become a better artist. The critique system is rather poorly made as well; when you post a critique, it comes at the top of the page where everyone can see it which can be both a little bit intimidating and even create some dramas sometim
