Flash Fiction Month 2015FFM Are you ready?Flash Fiction Month 20152 weeks ago in Literature Features More Like This
July marks the start of Flash Fiction Month- a creative challenge to complete 31 pieces of flash fiction, 1 for every day in July. It is a great way to stretch your writing fingers and maybe write pieces you would never have written before. It is about getting in regular writing and creating some potentially awesome first drafts for pieces that are worth developing.
Flash fiction is all about brevity in word count whilst still telling a fully rounded story. Although there isn’t a restriction of word count, it’s best to look between 25 and 1000 words. For FFM, keep in mind restriction and challenge yourself with amounts varying at different word counts.
If you have decided already to participate in this challenge, there is work to be done before July begins! Like any good writer, sometimes a bit of planning can go a long way!

Get out your Android, iPad, iPhone, or mobile platform of choice, and open the Madefire app. There's a bunch of new things I'd like you to check out.
The sections work like this:
This is 'classic' comic material. No bells, no whistles, just no bullshit, honest comics. (Indie creators and publishers should know we can put their material up within a couple of weeks of sending us a PDF. If your book isn't here you should ask yourself why not?)
This is where we continue to push the medium with a wide variety of cutting edge digital storytelling unique to each book. We also have books from top publishers - those that have had vision and were willing to push the envelope. You can get sucked in for hours.
We also have a deviantART section that features two categories:
The catch-all for pretty much everything anybody publishes on dA using the motion book tool. This ranges from single image parallax pa

:iconmrs-durden: has been running a feature series known as "Voyage to the Unknown". Having been tagged, I've tried to find somewhere on the site that I haven't ventured much. I don't think I've ever really looked into "Motion Books", and it's a shame, I think, because DA did collaborate with MadefireStudios to set that up for our use.
So here you will find several pieces from the Motion Books section that I hope you will enjoy!

These books show a range of styles and approach, from classic static manga, to innovative use of sound and motion:
This parallax by Danesippi is deceptively simple, but works beautifully. So much depth!
The most basic use of the tool, but so amazingly designed and executed by Grozyll that it begs to be checked out.

The Latest Thing of Beauty

A Guide to Effective TaggingA new method to promote and discover art has been released to the community in the form of Tags! When submitting art, adding relevant tags to your deviations will help viewers discover art of interest to them and give your work more exposure.A Guide to Effective Tagging9 months ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
You can add tags based on a variety of things, be it subject matter, themes, medium used, fandom, or anything else you feel is important.
Use these tips to make the most of tags and help your art to find its audience:
Keep it simple. The less complicated the tag, the easier your art is to discover.
Be specific. If you take a picture of a rose, tagging it as #flower, while correct, won’t get your art as much attention as tagging it #rose will. You can, of course, tag both.
Tag efficiently. If your art is based on Lord of the Rings, tag it #LordOfTheRings and/or #lotr. You don’t need to tag every combination — t
Are you being honest with yourself? As part of becoming good at something you need to be able to reflect upon yourself. Judge your own abilities and work and consider the possibility that what ever you have been doing it wrong all along. Or perhaps you're actually being to hard on yourself and you're better than your conscious is telling you. (This is bad too because it leads to insecurities.)Are you being honest with yourself?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Signs that you might overestimate your current skills.
Do you often feel these things when you look upon work from good artists?:
I can totally do this too.
This is not so hard, I can do this faster.
My work is way more interesting.
It's not fair that this person gets way more attention than I do.
Why am I not being recognized for my skills.
This other technique is cheating! (photo-bashing, using reference, filters, effects etc)
I don't need to draw and learn all day to become this good.
I spend 2 hours on a painting, Masterpiece!!

I Got Angry! Pt.4 (Furious Interlude!)I was wondering to myself if I was STILL angry about things, even after all these years - and honestly? I really am!I Got Angry! Pt.4 (Furious Interlude!)1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Actually - I'm f**king pissed-off!!!
You'll be hard-pressed to find an artist that isn't!
We're over a barrel. We're art monkeys. We're work-for-hire engines that spit out the creations of others as best we can, striving to gain enough prominence to sustain an ongoing living, dreaming of a legacy.
We face hatred, the bitter barbs of trolls, the cruel dismissal of subjectivity, unfair comparisons with our peers.
We have to navigate taste, culture, the need for relevance.
We have to beat our way past the legions of others after the same job.
We have to remain immune to the jealous mutterings of those that fall along the way.
It SUCKS being a part of the machine, the self-serving circle of an industry consuming itself because it doesn't know any better. It's stuck in an ancient cycle, a rotating dance that is literally going nowhere!
So yes. I'm f**k

If you GET a distribution deal, you'll be in the long shadow cast by the big companies, buried in a dark corner of a vast monthly catalogue.
If you have no marketing budget, then your only option is to hit message boards, FaceBook, indie-driven comic sites, and by getting hold of a list of the internet comics news sites – they're easy enough to find, you just have to Google them.
If you have created your own book, and your dream is to see it printed, but you have literally no funds and nobody is willing to publish it, there are other great options, such as http://www.lulu.com/blog/tag/print-on-demand/. Here you can upload your entire book having placed it into one of the templates they provide, and you can then order a printed, bound copy direct from them for the price you set for it. Print on demand is an incredible innovation, and like Amazon, they will list your book for anybody to buy, they'll eve
Fast lane to becoming a better artist.I often get this very question: How did you get this good this fast?Fast lane to becoming a better artist.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Now as I consider myself not being as good as people tell me, even struggling quite often with being an artist in general.
I do know how to get better and how to reach it fast. I'm still growing as I go and it's the main thing that keeps me going.
You need to get into the right mindset and the rest will follow. With the rest I mean:
3. Positive energy.
4. The NEED to draw.
Seeing growth in your work gives you the courage to work harder. You know that feeling when you're just about done with an image
and feel like this image is better than your last one, that great feeling. Use it!
Do studies! Lots of them!! Make film shot studies, live object studies, master-painting studies. They will teach you a lot about composition, lighting, colors, shapes storytelling etc.
You will hardly notice that you are learning thing
I Got Angry! Pt.3I'm not an angry guy. I'm very mild-mannered. But there's SO MUCH I wish I had known up front, before I got into comics. There are rudimentaries that I'm kind of angry nobody clearly pointed out before I got in too deep.I Got Angry! Pt.31 year ago in Personal More Like This
Nobody tells you that in the mainstream, as an artist, you'll almost certainly be drawing stuff you're NOT prepared for, and don't really have any desire to do or passion for.
Are you hearing this? It's REALLY a big one:
You'll almost certainly be drawing stuff you're NOT prepared for, and don't really have any desire to do or passion for.
What does that mean? What are you saying Sharpie? How can that be right?
Well - and this is from experience - you won't generally get to draw or write the book you're most suited to.
Classic example: I've been trying to get a Conan gig my whole career - a book I'm so clearly suited to it's unreal, and pretty much every artist I know has said as much! - and yet, even after all this time (27 years
Nerd/Gaming/Comic Culture Sexism VideosSince this keeps being a reoccurring topic I thought I'd lend a hand and put together a comprehensive list of web shows and youtube videos that pretty much explain or talk about these various topics. The vast majority of these will be from Jimquisition and MovieBob's various shows (because in my eyes they're the two biggest proponents out there discussing this stuff on a regular basis), but there's a couple other web shows too. They've been all categorized and easily separated so you can pick and choose whatever you wanna watch. My first angry post was all about 'why' - why do it? What was the motivation? Why was I so bloody angry? And what was I doing about it?
Part 2 was about identity - who are you? What should you know about yourself and the industry if you really want to get serious about it?
http://techgnotic.deviantart.com/ wrote as part of his amazing response: 'But I think there comes a time when the whole system becomes so exhausted from mindless repetition that a certain cynicism becomes the only form of true enlightenment and what we loved about our artistic obsessions gets forgotten.'
http://deevelliott.deviantart.com/ also had some strong thoughts, including 'you have to bite your lip when f**ked up the arse and treated like you don't matter, better still sm

Anger and frustration.
That's what started it all!
I'm not somebody that feels entitled. I don't expect anything from the world, or anybody in it. That said, I did feel I had earned a fair hearing. I'd put in the years, drawn the BIG books, and the cool ones! I thought I should, by rights, be able to get at least one pitch for a creator-owned comic written and drawn by me off the ground. But though I must have pitched upwards of 30 titles across the board over a period of TEN YEARS, nothing landed.
So yes. I was angry and frustrated!
I was asked, by the very excellent Joseph Michael Linsner, what Madefire was all about a couple of weeks ago, following the Big Wow Comic Fest. It was a good question, as it pointed out a gap in our message, something people were perhaps not getting:
Why do it?
What was the need?
The need was to create a platform for the digital age on which creat
