A Polished White SinkA Polished White Sink:
If I had to call this world a blessing;
I think I'd say 'I find it damn depressing.'
You might think I'm stupid from how I'm dressing,
But this is just the heart I feel like wearing.
I see street corners and absent youth;
Don't pretend you don't ever see the night.
Cause when it turns dark, the maggots start crawling;
Looks like God decided to shut out the light.
I can warm my hands on fire and watch the people go,
They don't know who I am, I just go with the flow.
I see streets that seem empty, clogged to the brink;
But that's the reality deep beneath the sink.
It looks clean on the outside, polished porcelain white,
But inside of the pipes are what you keep out of sight.
Yet they're already straining and distorted with strain;
Soon the flood water comes flowing, wash away with the rain.

CREW LISTEdit: Chenbeard the Pirate is no longer the Captain of the Black Fedora Pirates. The new captain is Lady Riddle :iconDiluculi: so if yer lookin' t' join, best seek 'er out eh? ^^CREW LIST3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Arrr maties. Ye've waited a long time ta see the crew list come up and I just want ye all ta know that this is going to double up as a bounty list (this journal entry will be a permanent entry). It will be linked on my ID and every crew member will be featured here permanently.
For those who are interested in joining the crew, the join rules will be listed below after the bounty section (Ctrl + F, "Join Rules", to skip straight there). If you want to know WHY it is good to have a bounty, scroll past the crew list and I'll give a full explanation on it ("Bounty Section").
Note: members in this list are NOT listed in terms of rank, with the exception of the Captain and First Mate (Co-Captain) who will occupy the first two slots.

I just got a funny post from Chen and um...well you'll see
"Dear Ms. Secretary,
My son has asked me to post this on his behalf. It must be troublesome but thank you for assisting him. He mentioned something about having to update his work, but I don't think he's currently capable of that.
You see, my son enjoys anime and manga and while I don't begrudge him his hobbies, he has a habit of wanting to try things out that he sees or reads about. As such he attempted some form of tai chi breathing exercises on our balcony. Winter has recently ended but the weather is still cold and he wasn't exactly well clothed. In the end he's caught the worse cold he's ever had and is currently sniffling in bed.
He said it was important to tell his "pirates" that he will not be making an update today and to forgive him. I am not sure what this is slang for, but I hope my son has not joined any street gangs. I remember him aspiring to be a rapper at some point, but he appears to have giv
The Comic Is a LieDo I really need to do this? Do I really have to write a journal explaining that my SYAC comics are mostly made up? Really, internet, is this a thing now?The Comic Is a Lie1 year ago in Personal More Like This
So yeah... just so we're all perfectly clear on things... the majority of my comics are made up. While they might have an element of truth or be based on a real event, it's all still rearranged, altered, or just plain fabricated to make a joke.
Here's a good rule of thumb: If I don't expressly say it's based on a real thing in my description, you should just assume that it's made up and fake. And even if I do say it's based on a real thing, chances are it's been altered and re-arranged to make the joke work. So really, you should just assume that everything that happens in SYAC is entirely fictional. I know having an "avatar" that in some respects represents me and my opinions can cloud things but still, just assume that everything is made up. Any references to haters, any frustrations a character is going through,

The Word of Chen \(*w*)/
Ladies and gentlemen, pirates and pirettes,
Today marks the beginning of my new Spread the Word Campaign for 2013. Essentially, I plan for it to be a year long event and it will be focused around the concept of 'cross-marketing'. In other words, 'you scratch my back and I scratch yours'.
How will it work? Read on and find out :3.
SPREAD THE WORD!
...The Word of Chen...
Okay, so the first part of this campaign is clearly to spread the Word of Chen. What does that mean? It means I need to get my DA account out there and the best way for me to tackle this is with the help of the public.
What do you have to do? Simple.
Get 1 new person to watch me. All you need is 1. If you want to get more, save them for other days.
All you have to do, is send me a note telling me who the new watcher
an introduction to my Anthro universe.. :PI got a question the other day, about what dog breed Sam and Saunders in their anthro form is supposed to be.an introduction to my Anthro universe.. :P2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I started answering the comment, but soon found out it would just end up being a looooong reply... And I thought, as I wrote, that maybe others would be interested in what breed they and their relatives are, as well as Spike's breed, some character origins, how the people (or anthro) in my little fictive universe views their fellow inhabitants, and a bit of history around this whole thing.
Therefore, I'm deciding on writing a journal entry about this.
The different breeds.
Saunders and Sam were originally, when I first created and designed them, supposed to be Golden Retrievers. Thus, they did in fact both have floppy, furry ears just like the Golden has. For some reason, I felt this made the characters look sad, so I changed - I think - Saunders' ears first to stand up just like a Terrier's ears. Sam's ears changed shortly after. I kept this change as I thought it ma
Binary HatredRemember when I was posting some journals about artist taboos and I had a couple more to talk about? Here's one of them, though it doesn't just relate to artists it's just kinda an all around taboo I wish would end.Binary Hatred1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Perceived Rivalry Hatred
Basically it works like this: You say you dislike something and immediately get attacked by people who either defend the thing you said you disliked, or accuse you of being a supporter of it's supposed rival (whether this has any basis in reality or not). It also works on things you like, things you're indifferent to, or anything really. EVERYTHING has a supposed default rival. Movies, TV, Video Games, Ideologies, Words, Phrases, etc. Everything.

You like Chocolate Ice Creme? Fuck you and your vanilla bias!
Arrietty is an evil movie, apparently...A few months back Fox News went after The Muppets for "promoting the liberal agenda" (whatever the **** that means this week). Miss Piggy got back at them with a scathing remark during an interview shortly after the controversy and we all had a laugh at Fox's expense. Well... Fox is at it again...Arrietty is an evil movie, apparently...3 years ago in Personal More Like This
This time they're going after Studio Ghibli's "The Secret World of Arrietty" and accusing, once again, that liberal Hollywood's agenda is corrupting children and turning them into "occu-toddlers." They also turned their sights on the new adaptation of Dr. Seuss's The Lorax. They claim that both movies "demonize the 1%" and that people "offended" by these movies should fight back by... littering. Don't believe me? Watch the video and get ready to facepalm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuFcWkFJZgk
Now I can understand (barely) how a conservative could possibly have an issue with The Lorax since it deals with criticizing the logging industry and promoting the dangers of excessive defore
Off*beat reprinting of 1+2 Extras??So this month I will be working on new covers for books 1+2 of Off*beat. They will be reprinted with my new publishing company and match the layout, logo ect of the eventual book 3. I would like to add some extra content, and my publishers have agreed to possibly adding a limited copy insert as well.Off*beat reprinting of 1+2 Extras??2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'd like to know what the patient, patient, (bless your souls ;_ patient readers of Off*beat would be interested in seeing as added content and a possible limited insert.
I was thinking for added content perhaps more little funny strips, kind of omake? style. Or sharing some of my photography and talking a bit more of actual locations in NYC that heavily inspired the setting.
For limited inserts, I was thinking of perhaps a post card, bookmark, or stickers.
If you have any thoughts on this, please let me know. Thanks!
And I will have more updates in the months to come
The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.The Echo chamber dilemma2 years ago in Personal More Like This
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.
And this is becoming a growing problem, I think, because n

sparkler monthly issue 1 is up!hey guys!!sparkler monthly issue 1 is up!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
so sparkler monthly is up and running which means at long last off*beat is continuing.
I'm nervous and excited after all these years it's really a mixed bag of emotions for me right now.
(Well pregnancy hormones probably don't help with that....)
I want to apologize for my lack of presence on the web these days. I really don't want to keep going on and on about how tough this pregnancy has been on me, but well...it's one of the longest hardest things I've had to endure both physically and mentally in my entire life so my time sitting upright at the computer has to be spent very wisely (and is pretty much exclusively work related)
Thanks again so very much for the support and encouragement and I hope you guys will enjoy the last book of Off*beat. It certainly has been a long time coming!!

Starting right now, you have the possibility to earn money for your pirate!
How do you do that? It's actually very simple:
Counts your words in any BFP writing (created after this journal is posted) you wish to earn money for. Using a super secrete formula, the captain (i.e. me) will give you gold doubloons for your effort. If you don't have something written, you don't need to count words, it's that easy!
What is the super secret formula? Have a look:
Total word count / 100 = amount of gold doubloons
The result can be modified by the following multipliers:
Number of x acting NSCs = 1.x
Number of x acting BFP charact

Advice for our Artists and WritersI figure this is a much needed journal. I know a lot of people want to know how to get better and how to rank better in the judging. It's very tough to judge at all, believe us - there are so many great entries and it's hard to give out numbers that suggest "this one is better than this other one-" but I guess that's the reality of judging, huh?Advice for our Artists and Writers3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Well, this group IS here to give people prompts about what to draw. We like seeing improvement, and there was a good amount of it from people who entered Mission 2 after having done Mission 1. I can only imagine how much more improvement we'll see with these next ones!
I suppose I ought to start at something that both the art and writing categories have in common:
For these two categories, readability means a separate but similar thing.
For art, ask yourself these questions...
1) Is my handwriting legible?
It's important that we can clearly and quickly read what you wr

Actually, all of us are always striving to improve. Some are simply a little closer to their goals - that's the only difference. The second reason is that it's my way of showing appreciation to my readers. I've interacted with a lot of you, and I've received such nice comments. Thank you.

"It's not real" -- It sure as heck feels real. So real it IS my reality on a daily basis.
"It's just an excuse to get out of doing things that other people have to" -- I'd love to do thing other people are doing, and I'd relish in being happy when I do so.
"You're just a little sad, you'll get over it" -- Depression isn't just 'feeling sad sometimes'... it's feeling sad ALL the time for what seems like no reason at all.
"Just grow up! Everyone is depressed, you just have to deal with it like everyone else!" -- Stop using everyone else to justify your insensitivity to other people's conditions (also, most of the people suffering from depression are adults, you don't get much more 'grown up' than adult).
"You're not suffering from anything, you're just lazy, ungrateful, and being silly" -- Ok, because obviously I LOVE feeling miserable, worthless, and stupid all the time...who wouldn't...?
