Allistor heard the first customer of the night coming through the stained glass door. He expected it to be someone fresh out of work ready to drown his troubles in alcohol or get a little buzzed before heading on back home. This time, however, he couldn’t be sure what to make of this person taking a seat in his usual stool right in front of him.
“How’s it going, Allistor?” Mathias greeted his old friend with a usual, tired smile.
The bartender gave him a look of disapproval.
What business does he still have here? he wondered. Then, he thought about it. It didn’t take a genius to remember that ____________ had stayed over at his apartment. Even Mathias would have remembered that. He must have been here to clear things up if ______________ didn’t get around to it.
“What’ll it be, Mathias?” Allistor asked in his usual bartender-to-customer tone.
“Nothing,” Mathias said. “I’m just here

Fifteen messages, you sighed as you pocketed your phone. You had a feeling Mathias would try to call you and find out where you were so you had switched your phone to its silent mode when you drove to Allistor’s bar just the night before.
“Are you going to reply?” Allistor asked noticing your conflicted expression.
“I don’t know,” you said. “Well, I’m going to talk to him either way, but I don’t feel that doing it over the phone is the best method.”
Your friend’s emerald eyes narrowed. “______________, remember what I said—”
“I know, I know,” you interrupted him. “I might say something different the moment I look at him, is that right?”
“It’s not just that,” Allistor added. “Who knows what his mental state is like after knowing you left him?” He paused. “You never did tell me what happened.”
You rubbed your neck

Neither of you said very much during the car ride if anything at all. All the while, Allistor had an expression that made it look like he wanted to desperately tell you something.
If you want to say something, why don’t you? you wondered as you looked at his reflection in the window.
Much like his apartment, Allistor’s car carried around the faint stench of cigarette smoke. It wasn’t a filthy car, but you were convinced that if you looked hard enough, you would be able to find a cigarette butt or a bottle of alcohol somewhere tucked underneath the seats.
What am I thinking? Allistor’s not that type of person, you thought. Sure, your friend might have enjoyed the usual share of smoking and drinking, but he wasn’t like those irresponsible indulgers—not like a certain guy you knew, anyway.
“______________...” Allistor suddenly brought up.
“Yeah?” you responded, not bothering to turn your head.

When you woke up, the first thing you noticed was the smell. This wasn’t your home. Heck, it wasn’t even your car. Where was the familiar smell of sharp cologne and fresh-baked bread?
Crap, my head… you groaned and rubbed your temples. Everywhere hurt. Your breath tasted absolutely foul, it was dark, and— What in the world were you wearing?
These weren’t your clothes. Instead of the light jacket and jeans you were wearing from last night, your body was covered with a dress shirt much too large for your body. It might have even doubled up as a dress. And when you pressed your nose to the fabric…
It has the same smell as him… you thought, your eyelids growing heavy with the familiar scent.
You clutched the shirt close to your chest. It wasn’t too often when Allistor would show this side of him. More than anyone, you knew he preferred not to have company. Perhaps tha

The "Mathias" out in public was the "Mathias" Allistor had to be talking about. The moment you saw him in the office, you spotted him doing something along the lines of a pep talk for his coworkers. The very way in which his hands moved along with his body as he talked made his words enunciate themselves in ways his mouth didn’t need to. Mathias was fairly tall. The advantage of height gave him a successful-looking edge that made him stand out among even the thickets of crowds.
What captured your attention most of all, however, was his smile. On that faithful day when Allistor had introduced you to his friend, Mathias instantly won your heart over with his bright, beaming smile. Everything about his stance, the air he carried, and the way he delivered oozed charisma. You, like everyone else, wanted to be around him. Just laying your eyes on him made your heart beat a little faster and your breathing a littler shorter.
“Oh! ___________, over here!&

Thank goodness your job had such flexible hours. Had your job been anything else, you would have had to run around in circles calling up what’s-her-face or who’s-his-name to give you a ride to the main city. Today, however, was a leisure day. You had the entire day to yourself; you could do whatever you so pleased.
It wasn’t like hanging around Mathias’ apartment was interesting. There wasn’t anything for you to do since he was usually gone, and everything was already so clean. At least you wouldn’t have to worry about picking up after him like an official housewife—not that the two of you were married, of course.
I guess I should go grab his car, then, you thought and went to put on your shoes.
The route to Allistor’s bar was about a thirty-minute walk; it wasn’t far to get to, but if someone was drunk, there was no guarantee that he—or she—would be able to get home safely. As a result, you al

It must have been later into the night than you had thought because when you burst into the bar, all of the usual drinkers had left. Allistor looked like he was about to close up, too, because he wasn’t cleaning any of the cups, and the counter looked like it was squeaky-clean.
“____________?” Allistor blinked. “What’re you doing here at this hour? Are you looking for Mathias?”
You slowly shook your head and plopped yourself down at your usual stool.
“Then what’re you here for?” he asked. “It’s late. Don’t you have work tomorrow.”
“I want a drink,” you said.
For what seemed like the longest time, there was nothing but silence all throughout the bar.
Finally, Allistor broke the deafening silence. “Did I….? Did I hear you right? I mean, I’ve never seen you drink before, and you look like a mess. Are you feeling alri—?”

The day was drawing near. You could feel it.
In truth, you didn’t want to hold onto grudges forever. Life was too short to fill it with hate. Allistor had to be the one most taken aback by your sudden decision. You knew he was angry with you. Actually, perhaps “angry” was too strong a word for what he was feeling towards you. “Disappointed” was a better way to put it, and Allistor was so disappointed in you that he had refused to talk to you ever since. He wouldn’t answer his phone, he wouldn’t look at you when you visited his bar, and he wouldn’t ask about how your relationship with Mathias was going.
You and Mathias were doing just fine, though. Mathias didn’t treat you poorly. If anything, he was expressing his love for you even more. He didn’t drink, he didn’t wander out late with his friends, and he never hurt you. Even so, you couldn’t help that something was keeping

They were all wrong. He didn’t belong to any of them. He was yours and yours alone. You were the only one who truly understood him. You knew the other side of him, the side that he had hidden from everyone else.
Your cell phone rang. The moment you flipped out your phone and clicked on the screen, you knew who the text was from and who was sending it. It was from Allistor.
“Come pick him up,” was all it said and all it needed to say.
A heavy sigh escaped your lungs. Such a small action was supposed to help you relieve your stress, but you had grown accustomed to the temporary gesture of escape. By now, sighing had become no better than putting a Band-Aid on a deep cut; it could only help so much before the worsening pain started to erupt out of your wound. That wound happened to be in your heart.
When you arrived at the usual bar, Mathias was already waiting on the curb with his head hung low. You wondered if he had thrown up alread

Things are better this way, aren’t they? you asked yourself. I’m not hurt, I still have my friends, I’m still alive, I’m still…a virgin. But…
“What are you thinking about, ___________?” a deep voice asked you from across the counter.
“Oh, I was just wondering how in the world Mathias used to like to drink this stuff,” you chuckled.
Allistor rolled his eyes. “I’m surprised you’ve begun to take it up.”
You furrowed your eyebrows and clinked your glass. “Hey, this is a special occasion. Mathias proposed to me.”
“I would’ve thought that you would’ve called up your family or friends and gone out for a celebration—not hanging around a muggy place like this.”
“No, this is just fine,” you said.
“Why? So you can rub it into my face about how Mathias was right?”
You shook your head. “Na

Yao had been playing in the family garden when his father came to him dragging a large chain with something hobbling timidly behind him.
“Yao, listen closely to me,” his father said as he knelt down. “In a few more years, you will be the next successor to our family’s estate. There will be many people who will want to take your fortune away from you, and there will be people who will even try to kill you.”
The child swallowed. He was young, but he was wise enough to know the power his family’s name carried. As the oldest son, the responsibility fell on him to carry out his duty as the next head of the Wangs.
“I have brought something to protect you,” his father continued. “She is a very powerful asset, the best of the best. Where your wisdom will be your shield, her power will be your sword.”
Curious, Yao craned his neck over his father’s shoulder, but his father stopped him.

“Alright, here’s where we enter, then, Dragonheart,” Tino said and made a sharp roll to the side.
“Wh-What are you doing?!” you screamed. You couldn’t hold on any longer. In your shock, you completely lost your footing and slipped off the dragon’s back.
“Not to worry, ____________,” Tino said and changed into his human form. Then, he pulled in his arms and legs inside his body like a diving falcon and reached out to grab your hand.
Once you grabbed on, he pulled you close to his body and began to look for any signs of Mathias.
“Look for the color red!” you shouted above the plummeting winds.
“I see him,” Tino said. His vision proved to be sharper than yours because you weren’t able to see Mathias until a few seconds later.

Bemused, you stared into the Divine Keeper of the Sapphire Flames’ eyes.
“How unlike you to bring me up from your past,” you chuckled.
As this wasn’t exactly Tino or Berwald’s journey, the other dragons had offered to stay behind with Mathias. Everyone had decided that you and Lukas should finish looking for Emil together. At long last, the two of you were back to travelling alone. In the time that you had been walking, your travelling companion hadn’t said anything until now.
“You've long asked about my title,” Lukas said.
"Yeah, I have,” you smiled.
The dragon snorted. “It seems so long ago that we started out for Eldur Mountain together.”
“Mm-hmm,” you agreed pressing your lips together.
“Would you like to hear one?” Lukas asked.
“Why would you ask me something like that all of a sudden?”

While you refilled your once empty stomach with some roasted birds Mathias had caught (“Just call me a hunting expert!” he had said), the dragons took the liberty of catching up with what had happened in the time they had been separated.
“I was right about you bringing bad luck wherever you go,” Lukas snorted, giving you an icy glare. By now, you had gotten so used to it (or perhaps you were just too hungry to care) that it didn’t even bother you.
“Finding a lockpick was easier than expected,” Berwald said.
“Wouldn’t finding a lockpick mean you’d have to know where humans would be keeping one?” Mathias asked. He, too, was eating a thoroughly cooked bird alongside you. Lukas was sitting on your other side with Tino and Berwald sitting across from you in their human forms.
Berwald’s human form was rather intimidating when you first saw it. At the time when you first met up with him and Lukas, you had bee

Lukas was still at the spot where you had left him. There was no turning back after everything he had done for you even if you hadn't realized it until it was too late.
Now that you were able to see, you were able to get a grasp of what exactly this place was. In short, it was both a garbage heap and a graveyard for whatever the people above didn’t want to deal with. The clacking sounds you had heard earlier had been the bones of small animals, unfortunate humans, and even a few strange skeletal structures you did not fully recognize.
Thanks to the Sapphire Flames, as you so called them in tribute to Lukas’ formal title, the nightcrawlers and bloodsnares had steered clear of your path. You could occasionally hear them chattering in the darkness, but for the most part, they remained unseen.
With the flames of the world now residing safely in your heart, you had one final task to take care of: find Emil and if possible, rescue him.

Lukas didn’t even look sorry. “I had hoped you would have made the connection between the flame bearers and my title, but I guess once you’re a stupid human, you’re always a stupid human.”
“H-Hey, that doesn’t mean you had to hit me! What if you broke my head?”
“It’s already broken!”
“Manners are the last thing on my mind!”
“Well, if you’re the one carrying the flames, why don’t you just try giving them to me since you hate me so much?!”

“I didn’t even know they still existed…” Lukas breathed. That’s when he looked over to where you and Mathias had fallen across the river and saw your bleeding temple.
“Mathias, get her out of here!” he barked to the Blade of the Ruby Seas.
Mathias didn’t need to be told twice. Whatever that thing was, it didn’t look like the dragons were capable of fighting such a large creature while the force field was still up. Still…
How is that thing able to stay in that form if he’s a dragon? you wondered. Shouldn't the force field prevent him from coming inside?

The gulls were cawing and flying lazy circles overhead. Unfortunately, the poor excuse for a sail was too small to provide any shelter against any droppings that might have fallen onto your head. The lack of shade wasn’t an improvement, either.
“Blasted birds,” you angrily grumbled and craned your head past the small mast to see how your sailing companion was doing.
As I thought, you frowned and threw him a disapproving look. He was suffering from apparent heat stroke, and that nasty gash he got earlier wasn’t making the situation any better. “Ho! Who dares speak to me?!” you cried whipping your head around to see where the source of the voice came from. The voice was almost familiar, but the manner in which the voice was speaking was far too different than anyone you had heard before.
With no prospect of there being a speaker anywhere in sight, you began looking around for the source with the Sapphire Flames guiding your vision.

“I have to thank you for your courage and determination, Dragonheart,” Emil’s body spoke. Gone was the lovely silvery shimmer of his white hair; his eyes and face were beyond recognition with nothing but darkness clambering over a hazy, writhing shadow. His voice had been altered to a point where you could not fathom that speaking to him had once offered you comfort and solace in a place where you would have otherwise gone mad. Then again, if there was a proper time to be going mad, now was the time.

After some gliding on the ice and trying to endure the sharp winds blowing through the narrow cliffs, you finally found Mathias and Lukas exhausted, but very much alive sitting along an open river bank where the water had grown shallow enough for them to come up to the surface as seen by a recently shattered area of ice.

When you got to the edge of the frozen river, you were more than happy to get off of your stomach and onto your feet again. All the while as you were trudging through the gathering snow, Lukas and Mathias barely opened their eyes to even so much as give you a greeting.
