1. Hello! For the beginning, could you tell us something about yourself?
Hello! My name is Šárka, pronnounced Sharkah. I’m a 20 years old student of biology at Charles university in Prague. I come from the south of Czech Republic (the country with beer) , from beautiful South Moravia (the region of wine). I have a tarantula called Ungoliant and I love everything related to J.R.R.Tolkien.
2. When did you read Tolkien's books for the first time, and what impression did they leave in you?
When I was 10, I found an interesting book in a

1. Hello! For the beginning, could you tell us something about yourself?
Hi everybody! What to say... I am homebody that draws things for a hobby, and doesn't have nearly enough time to do so as much as she'd like. I am a student (though not for long) and like to let my mind wander with Tolkien (and others) when number crunching gets to be too much. I'm Catalan, female and study chemistry and engineering.
Exploring Art 30: Theft and value of an artistHey guys. I've written about copyright law in the past, but there are some things I just.. never thought to mention. However now that Sarah and I are working together, we're dealing with several types of art theft at once. Everything from the recast dolls situation (where someone buys your doll, makes casts of it, then sells it to the public. Yes this is illegal, more on that later), to someone submitting my art to a game company as their own for a job. In many cases we are dealing with ignorance, so I thought I would clarify a few things.Exploring Art 30: Theft and value of an artist2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
This is going to take a while.
The Recast Situation
There is a new trend in the ball jointed doll industry, where people are taking dolls and sending them to 'professional recasters'. These people then make a mold of someone's doll, and recast it. They then proceed to sell the doll to their customers. The artist receives no compensation for this, nor is allowed to even have a say in anything from the quality of the resin, to the

NYC Subway: It’s a love-hate thing…
57th Street Subway station
New Yorkers have maintained their love-hate relationship with the subway system for over a hundred years.
The first pneumatic subway train in NYC ran on Feb. 26, 1887. The subway defines everything good and everything bad about life in the city. What could be more stimulating and life-affirming than hopping on an early morning freshly cleaned and de-graffitied subway car, packed w

Now I made Mirkwood elves! Legolas, Thranduil, Oropher!
Such a random title - it's been a while since my previous entry.
I'm alive - so far - and I'm pretty sure i'm gonna die by the end of this month because of midterms Oh kill joy.
Anyways, guess what, I made my very first plz accounts!
They're part of my icon family (http://kittykatkanie.deviantart.com/journal/Noldorin-Icon-Family-Updated-10-5-218743173), but since they're not really related by blood (well, maybe they are but Tolkien never really specified it) to the actual family, I made plz accounts for them

I know that when it comes to making something, having patterns and tutorials always helps me to learn something new. Here, I've compiled the plushie-type tutorials I could find on Deviant Art to hopefully get something creative going this summer!
Try doing some of these, and then modifying them to make your own critters, and be sure to share links to what you've made so we can all see!
All of these tutorials were found right here on Deviant Art, under Resources -> Tutorials -> Artisan Crafts!

Weird and scary world of sexualityNot impressed by people right now.Weird and scary world of sexuality1 month ago in Personal More Like This
I've made so much Cracked After Hours fan art where I over-thought the characters, and suggested things like Daniel having anxiety disorder, Soren fearing being weak because his parents were fucked up, Michael being a sad figure who is dimly aware that he's losing his mind, or that Katie is into guys acting like dogs.
That's all fine, but when I quote the series for saying they aren't straight or cis and try to suggest what they might be, suddenly I'm "pigeonholing it" and "being weird" and "too tumblr".
Is the idea of a character not being straight or a guy not minding being called a woman really that scary? I've even suggested Daniel likes to fuck machinery and that was a-okay, but oh my god what are these scary word demisexual and genderqueer!?
The series is all about overthinking stuff. The characters overthinks pop culture, and the fans overthink the series itself. I've seen it suggested that they're all dead and in the afterlife, that it's

As I read, that there will be a convention in Bonn, Germany, from March 30th to April 1st 2013 with 9 of the main actors from The Hobbit as quests – Sylvester McCoy (Radagast), Dean O'Gorman (Fili), Graham McTavish (Dwalin), Mark Hadlow (Dori), Jed Brophy (Nori), Adam Brown (Ori), John Callen (Oin), Peter Hambleton (Gloin) and Stephen Hunter (Bombur) - I just needed to go there. I went with my sister and it was our first convention ever. So I'm going to tell you some of our highlights.
Of course we were really excited! There were so many people and I'm actually quite shy. It was the first time that I saw cosplayers in real life. Their costumes and weapons were amazing!
As we got our tickets the first unexpected thing happened: Graham McTavish and Dean O'Gorman

The Serenely Powerful Art of `yuumei
In the top half of an hourglass, a polar bear and her cub perch perilously atop a wedge of melting ice, its dripping water becoming the "sand" that is inexorably drowning an urban couch potato figure in the hourglass's bottom chamber. The beautiful yet arresting digital painting is "Countdown" by yuumei and it is currently one of the most popular pieces on deviantART. It is "archetypal yuumei" in its perfectly balanced blending of a striking lyrically beautiful visual with an underlying urgent social or political message.
Her specialty is digital art in an anime style, but she often employs traditional watercolors and other elements. Her cause is saving and preserving what's left of the Earth's wildlife and its environment; she donates large portions of profits from her artworks to a host of wildlife and environmental organizations and urges all deviants and others to do the same. But what has really been her stand-out achievem

I'm sorry, but I can't help but laugh at this. In all my life I had the impression that most Brits were a pretty intelligent lot. England is known for its rich history and, at least according to a lot of us Aussies over here, (who according to some Poms are merely uncultured descendants of convicts), English folk are often thought of as rather proper and have an air of superiority that more times than not is reduced to a whimper when international sports are involved. (Particularly ones they themselves invented.) So when I found out that one out of seven Brits probably look at their mighty Big Ben in Fair Blighty without knowing what the big hand and little hand does, ( unless it involves saving certain heroes from certain doom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDt9FrVOPZk ), this makes me both sad and amused all the same...
A very Tolkien ChristmasIn which Middle Earth turned into a brothel.A very Tolkien Christmas1 year ago in Personal More Like This
No, this has nothing to do with my fanfics. BUT it got ALL with Christmas to do. How?
Well, it started with me getting a LOT of LotR and Hobbit stuff for Christmas. People know me too well - I got a Hobbit board game, a Hobbit card stock, Hobbit figures, LotR PEZ-thingies (OMG) and the LotR extended edition collection box (FINALLY). But what turned Middle Earth into a brothel, was the Hobbit Monopoly. Whatever clever brain got the idea "yeah, you can BUY the characters!" asked for a lot of crack. I and my two cousins was so excited, we went all "ehrmagerd, I can buy Fili!" "OMG BOFUR!" "NO WAIT THORIN" etc. So... It all started with me buying Kili. Cousin 1 went all "noooooo Kili is miiiiine!" Sorry. I'm collecting the Durins FFS.
And from there, it all went crazy. I was the worst, I think.
Cousin 2: I landed on... Balin...
Me: 6 dollars please
Cousin 2: Only 6??
Me: It's the arthritis, you know
Cousin 2: O__o ...omg...
Cousin 1: Okay you go
