FAQ! Finally!Hello everybody!FAQ! Finally!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been getting an increase in notes and messages lately asking all kinds of things. Problem is, I'm far from having the time to answer all these questions individually (even if I did have it it would probably make more sense to spend it drawing), but I don't want to leave them unanswered either since I appreciate everyone's feedback a lot. So I decided to make a kind of FAQ, since I'm mostly being asked the same things over and over.
I'll try to group these semantically so reading though them makes a bit of sense.
Did you ever do any tutorials?
- Yes, I spent a lot of time on this one:
There's a lot of explaining in there, so please before you ask anything technique or learning related, read it thoroughly first.

And I also uploaded a ton of layered Photoshop files: http://algenpfleger.deviantart.com/gallery/28996547

Congratulations. Your prize: free art picture.
The whole "fave the journal"-rule was a scientific experiment. Getting this extra-attention is nice, of course, but I think I'll keep these lotteries small and personal in the future. I don't, understandably, want someone to come in just for the lottery and free art potentiality. But we'll see...

Oh boy..Edit: Okay so maybe popularity has nothing to do with it, but from what I've seen, it's well known artists (not necessarily popular but people who have gotten plenty of art of a certain character??? or you know, wolf artists cuz people luff teh woofs [i know not just images of "wolves" are stolen, shush])Oh boy..4 months ago in Personal More Like This
I have made it so my art is only viewable to members, but I doubt that'll help but it's worth a shot right?
I really dont want to have to turn into one of those artists who have to plaster their art with watermarks because asshole thieves think it's a-okay to upload my art and claim it as theirs. I think they're short a few screws in their brains

The New DecadeI vaguely remember feeling scared about how old I was getting when I was about 23. At that time, I was close to graduating as a graphic design major and had admitted my failure after trying very hard to convince myself that I liked it. I was at a loss of what to do next, a state of mind I did not and still do not deal well with. I was entirely frustrated, and felt unprepared to join the ranks of other "grown-ups" who are in the ripe age of 20s.The New Decade1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Seven years later, I can only look back in amazement at how everything ended up working out for the most part. I had so much fear and so much desire. I carried a chip on my shoulder so large that at times I got buried in my own insecurity. Yet the world gave me a spot, and my loved ones continuously put up with me in my worst moments. I received more help than I ever imagined even when I hesitated to reach out. Having finally learned that it's ok to be as flawed as I am as a person, I somehow becam

Preventing Injuries for Artists...Preventing Injuries for Artists...1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Preventing Injuries for Artists (and people who work with computers)
Hello there my fellow deviants, time for a new update. It’s a long entry, so go grab a snack and sit tight with a good posture, because there's a lot to learn here - even some anatomy.
I just read about Loish’s injury on her blog, and it’s truly saddening to see a fellow artist struggling with a physical limitation that affects their workflow.
Loish is absolutely right, the body has its limits and we ought to be careful before it’s too late.
Tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, aren’t stranger terms to me, many artists and people who work with computers for many hours, tend to deal with the same conditions, some let it advance to the stage where the only treatment is surgery, which can potentially reduce mobility and destroy an illustrator’s career.
Do Artists Matter?Do we matter?Do Artists Matter?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm specifically talking about "us" as designers, artists, or creative people. Do artists matter?
I have two personal stories that have helped me gauge and answer that question for myself. I hope they help you too.
(SIDE NOTE: I believe in a God and I believe that God loves me and leads my path but that I have free will and can turn from his leading and do my "own thing". Both of these stories have a TON of "God flavoring" that would make them much longer, so know that they are there if you want to read between the lines and find them. In short, both stories are answers to prayer.)
After 9/11 I felt worthless. Making cartoons just wasn't important in the new post 9/11 world. Firemen, policemen, construction workers, teachers, healthcare workers, architects- really, anyone that contributes to rebuilding our world and its infrastructure, those people had important jobs to do. We

Gouache TutorialTaken from my Tumblr blog.Gouache Tutorial4 years ago in Personal More Like This
As promised, here is a step by step of the gouache painting for the chapter 3 cover of Starcrossed. I was working on it last night and began to get a little tired so I stopped. I plan to finish the pic later today and will post the rest of the progress in a second post.
I posted the original in a previous post. The drawing is ink on 11" x 14" (27.9 x 36.5 cm) bristol paper. It's a nice and heavy weight paper that, aside from a little curling, stands up to gouache nicely.
I suppose I should start with a little introduction to gouache (rhymes with "wash"). There's a few reasons I wanted to use it, firstly as a little personal challenge. I don't use it very often. When I use traditional media, it's usually in the form of acrylic paint which is a different beast entirely.Secondly, well, I just happen to have a lo

“The very meaninglessness of life forces man to create his own meaning. Children, of course, begin life with an untarnished sense of wonder, a capacity to experience total joy at something as simple as the greenness of a leaf; but as they grow older, the awareness of death and decay begins to impinge on their consciousness and subtly erode their joie de vivre, their idealism—and their assumption of immortality. As a child matures, he sees death and pain everywhere about him, and begins to lose faith in the ultimate goodness of man. But, if he’s reasonably strong—and lucky—he can emerge from this twilight of the soul into a rebirth of life’s elan. Both because of and in spite of h

Tutorials and techniquesQuite a lot of people keep asking me for tutorials and to be honest I see no point in creating yet another strip on how to paint skin/clothes/light/carrots/whatever. There are so many of them out there that it would be simply a waste of time to sit and basically copy what's already been told.Tutorials and techniques4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Instead, I've decided to make a compilation of different tutorials and charts that I personally use to learn how to paint.
The most important thing you need to learn even before starting to read a tutorial is that all walk-throughs are meant for you to understand how things work. My point is that after reading and later practicing a tutorial called 'how to paint a glass duck' you should be able to paint not only a glass duck but also anything else made of glass. You should concentrate on understanding the rules and patterns instead of trying to copy what you see on the image. Otherwise you'll end up knowing how to paint only a few things from only one perspective and one lightning pattern.

I have never found a companion who was so companionable as solitude.
Henry David Thoreau
By :icontechgnotic: techgnotic
I I always thought of Thoreau’s comment as simply a word game — clever but ultimately false at its core. A Valentines Day without a Valentine means being alone and alone means being unhappy. It’s taken many years to finally understand the truth in Thoreau’s words. We are never so alone as when in the company of loving family and friends, our Valentine companion held tight in our arms – but knowing we are lost, unfulfilled in our dreams and visions, and untrusting in our own inner counsel. Now I hope to one day seek companions

Below you'll find a list of tutorials I personally think of as the best on dA. If I have any problems with painting something I usually take a look at one of those.
Is there anything you're having troubles with? Need help looking for a good tutorial? Or maybe you'd like to see a video walk-through of me painting something?
I'm open for suggestions for what kind of tutorial/walk-through you'd like to see from me. If you're interested in anything, post your suggestions in the comments!

1. Selling yourself as a beginner
I found a prime example of this in a forum for artists seeking work. The thread title was „Starting-out artist looking for a chance",, and the thread told that the artist is „looking for a client for whom I may draw" and has „just graduated from art college".
We all were at this point once, but usually it takes too long to realize that „beginner" is the wrong mindset, even if you are one. Such statements sound like excuses and are guaranteed to weaken your position. Don't make excuses. Do not justify your work, and do not justify your prices. This is a tricky habit to acquire since we're not very confident by nature, but remember the image you wan

Hey guys, I'm breaking down and starting up a contest. Below is all the information you'll need.
To win you have to either 1) draw one of my OC's (in your own style, please. I don't want carbon copies of my own pictures) or 2) write a story involving one or more of my OC's. (My OC's will be included at the bottom of this post along with some basic information about them). You can also mix in some of your own characters.
Every contest has them. This one is no different, and please be aware that I will not bend them.
contest starts 7/26 and continues through 8/26 (though the date will be extended if there are not enough entries.)
watching me or favoriting one of my works will not increase your chances.
ONE submission per person. Multiple entries will not increase your chances.
If you opt to write instead of draw, please be aware that two or three paragraphs won't cut it. I want a good read.
