Drawing tips - tutorialHello watchersDrawing tips - tutorial2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Some people ask me how I learned to draw and what tips I can give them! So I wrote a tutorial and hope it will help! Here are my tips for you to become a better drawer!
First of all a good drawing stands with good materials. Good paper (no copy paper) and good pencils. If you're not sure, the expensive ones are mostly pretty good! For graphite I use Staedtler Mars Lumograph and for colour Faber-Castell "Polycromos".You need to use different numbers of pencils: 4H for very light areas and 6B for the dark areas. A big contrast in a drawing makes a better drawing! You can't make a good drawing with one HB pencil. You need a 6B or 4B to create more depth in the drawing.Choose a good picture. The greatest drawer in the world can't make a good drawing from a bad picture. A high-resolution image is necessary to see all the details! Next to the high-resolution, it has to be an interesting picture. The result could be a beautiful drawing, however a boring image wouldn't attract a

Comic Writing TutorialsHey deviantARTers-Comic Writing Tutorials3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I just finished up a 5 part comic writing tutorial run through on my blog and figured, since there are so many comic book fans and creative-types here, I'd post links to them here in case any of you might find them useful/interesting:
Part 1: Brainstorming
Part 2: Story Pacing
Part 3: Page Planning
Part 4: Scripting
Part 5: Dialogue
This isn't any kind of absolute-must-follow method, just the way I work and a few tips. If you found these posts helpful, feel free to let me know here (or on Twitter) and share the posts with your friends.
Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Collection: BridgesCollection: Bridges8 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Bridges hold many meanings for us. They represent a short cut (but with a certain danger; as evolved apes, falling is still a primal fear). They represent boundaries and crossing over them. They signify one’s past and one’s future. Visually, they can be as awe-inspiring as the Golden Gate or as sweetly bucolic as a row of wooden planks spanning a country creek. Bridges for foot, train and vehicle traffic all have their distinctive separate characters. But they all share in silent witness the secret stories of personal crossings that ended in triumph or something less.
“The fate of the bridges is to be lonely; because bridges are to cross not
Art Contest Extention Deadline OCTOBER 17thSince we didn't get enough entries to really call this one a contest, I've decided--upon suggestion from you guys-- to extend this contest. THE NEW DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 17THArt Contest Extention Deadline OCTOBER 17th2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm hoping to get maybe a minimum of 8 or 9 entries in total.
Bomango ze Tango!I'm going to get ahead of this right now and say that this might not be a riveting read for folks. Bad advertising, I know, but I feel it's necessary to preface this by being realistic. I'm not uber-famous, my characters aren't known far and wide, and for Pete's sake, I don't even have a proper webcomic or series to speak of. But, I've been asked numerous questions enough that it might be useful to have a FAQ essay of sorts to clear the air a bit.Bomango ze Tango!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So here goes...a history of "Bomango", as best I can recall...
ORIGIN! (in real life)(image circa way the hell back when i was still spelling it GoGo BoManGo)
"Bomango" (as it's come to be known) came about maybe around 2004 or thereabouts...shoot, maybe 2003, which makes it a decade old already...sheesh. Anyway, the earliest drawings of "Gogo" were sketchbook illustrations of a big-eyed girl in a long jacket. Not anime-style big eyes, mind you...big, droopy, heavily-lined eyes, wi
The evolution of an artistI'm a right pain in the arse as far as fans go. I admit it. I chop and I change, and if you're looking for a book that is consistent then you'd better not invest any time in me!The evolution of an artist2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm only half joking. Case in point - 'Captain Stone is Missing...' (on dA here: www.deviantart.com/art/Captain…) may be, in my opinion, the best work of my career, but consistent it is not!!!
For me there are artists that are able to produce work that spans decades in a style that remains consistent, professional and inspired. I envy these guys enormously! Page one of 'Watchmen' drawn by my friend and personal hero Dave Gibbons looks to my eyes as if it was drawn the day before the last page of issue 12. It's an incredible achievement! But then there are artists like the equally brilliant Moebius who would change styles page to page, even panel to panel, depending on his mood, aspects of his life, or a suddenly fl

why I've lost touch to this placeI don't quite know how it happened that exactly tonight the idea for creating a post like this crept up to me, and the longer I think of it I see no particular reason either. it's one of these things that rambles in the back of your mind for long enough, yet you're never too aware of it ... and all of the sudden it bursts out to the world, or it is willing to, and you are the one to choose if you want that to be.why I've lost touch to this place2 years ago in Personal More Like This
now I've been on this website for long enough and it's either me or the website that changed in order for me to feel about it the way I do; even though I believe it is not quite the latter. I remember these times where I adored this website and it meant so much to me so I ended up spending ages browsing the width of galleries and art we have on here; now that hasn't changed, I'm still fascinated by some things that I find.
yet what something inside of me started to think is that this place has become yet another place that just scratches along the surface and doesn't dig deepe
wow really? So i've recently found out that there are some artists out there who claim themselves as "professionals" yet all they do is basically taking people/customers money through art commissions and not finishing the work in months or even years, victims are mainly those who have already paid and patiently waited for that amount of time and still not receiving what they have paid for. Some artists who does this are artistically good, with relatively good amount of followers/fans, and some are popular here too (and maybe some other art sites, not just on DA)... It kinda sucks to think about it, the artist you admired for so long are the ones who does something like this. I feel sorry to those people who fell into this situation or if you've been in this situation before, i do hope you get your money back in the end. I mean, those money they've received didn't just grow from trees, people worked hard for it just to commission their fav artist(s), and yet knowing there are artists like thiswow really?2 years ago in Personal More Like This

The one thing that mattered..I have lost so much of myself up until now. I believe, when we experience pain, it will eventually leave us...but when it leaves, you're not the same person anymore.. I wonder why I miss the past although the present is 10 times brighter.. I admit, I've lost part of myself, but I'm reviving it now. That fear of "nothing matter" is disappearing...The one thing that mattered..2 years ago in Personal More Like This
because I know there is one thing that mattered 10 years ago.
...that childhood dream has always been on my mind, more than any contentment in this world.
and the the fact that I did't let go, is the reason for my strength.
Now that I'm alone, all I hear are the voices of people reminding me of the difficultly of this life ..and.. words of support from friends and fans.
and.. That one loud voice of my 12-year old self pushing me to keep it all up.
I should probably end this pathetic talk and go back to work.. but
I just want you to wait for me, the reason why I'm taking time, is because of the quality of my

Binary HatredRemember when I was posting some journals about artist taboos and I had a couple more to talk about? Here's one of them, though it doesn't just relate to artists it's just kinda an all around taboo I wish would end.Binary Hatred2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Perceived Rivalry Hatred
Basically it works like this: You say you dislike something and immediately get attacked by people who either defend the thing you said you disliked, or accuse you of being a supporter of it's supposed rival (whether this has any basis in reality or not). It also works on things you like, things you're indifferent to, or anything really. EVERYTHING has a supposed default rival. Movies, TV, Video Games, Ideologies, Words, Phrases, etc. Everything.

Say you like the X-Box 360? Automatically means you hate Sony.
Say you like the PS3? Automatically means you hate Microsoft.
You liked a Marvel movie? Guys you hate the DC stuff.
You like Chocolate Ice Creme? Fuck you and your vanilla bias!
advice on some stuff to look up before tutorialsso im gonna be starting to make some tutorials soonadvice on some stuff to look up before tutorials3 years ago in Personal More Like This
before that you should look up some informations
you probably noticed that in my work it is often hard to distinguish if im using a zbrush model or just painined it all in photoshop
reason for that is simple.
my realism rendering is greatly based on 3 d rendering processes.
by this i mean as i learned 3d i became aware of the stuff we usually visually take for granted.
qualities of material, importance of reflectivity, ambient occlusion, and subsurface scattering.
to any 3d artist these are everyday terms, while 2d artists usually paint them without often even being aware of wheat they are really doing
for instance , a 3d artist will at any given point use 2 types of shadows. cast shadows from a direct lightsource, and ambient occlusion shadows which naturally appear more intensively the closer planes of an object are together.
i can get into this and make it a long discussion , but easier w
