Minecraft Quest Reward SystemMinecraft Quest Reward System
A few weeks ago I came up with a simple quest reward system for my minecraft server that worked remarkably well. I thought I'd share it with everyone around here and posted this scrap deviation.
While it contains all the details of how to set it up, I wasn't entirely happy with it because I wanted to make sure everyone could understand why it does the things it does and how all that code functions.
So I made up this tutorial video that's being hosted over on Skyrie.net's YouTube page. It's 20 minutes long, but it's a comprehensive step by step tutorial of how to set up this reward system. Please enjoy!
Controversial OpinionsYou know, sometimes having opinions can make you feel like no one else shares your views, especially if your views aren't being widely vocalized around you. Case in point: It's just been announced that J.J.Abrams will be directing Star Wars 7, and the internet is raging with butthurt about how shitty Abrams is, making over abundant lens flare jokes, and bemoaning the reboot of Star Trek in the process.Controversial Opinions1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Thing is... I like J.J.Abrams. I liked LOST (despite it's shitty/rushed ending). I liked Super 8. I liked Cloverfield. I even enjoyed the recent Star Trek reboot and am looking forward to the sequel. I never had a problem with lens flares or noticed them being over used. And I think overall Abrams has made a fairly consistent batch of quality movies, which is a amazing considering how many directors flip flop between great and shitty.
But I can't often come right out and say that sort of thing because when I do I get attacked for having an opinion that runs counter to the vast majority o
My Minecraft Testificate InfestationIn Minecraft there are these squidward like villagers called Testificates. In a recent update they were given new abilities such as having babies to repopulating a town based on the number of houses there are. Since the requirement for a "house" is simply a room with a roof and a door, I decided to spend my time building a massive city for the Testificates to populate, using a generated village as a starting point. My Minecraft Testificate Infestation2 years ago in Personal More Like This
After building a number of houses, I began noticing the little children running wild and there becoming quite a LOT of villagers. I undertook a huge task of building a BIG open area underground with a couple doors and lights. Because the area was so big, the Testificates began to... um... OVER populate.
These little buggers reproduced the village so fast that I couldn't keep up and soon they were overflowing out of buildings. Mob attacks couldn't keep up with the rate they were repopulating, and the iron golems that kept spawning (for every 15 villager a new one spawns) made
Arrietty is an evil movie, apparently...A few months back Fox News went after The Muppets for "promoting the liberal agenda" (whatever the **** that means this week). Miss Piggy got back at them with a scathing remark during an interview shortly after the controversy and we all had a laugh at Fox's expense. Well... Fox is at it again...Arrietty is an evil movie, apparently...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This time they're going after Studio Ghibli's "The Secret World of Arrietty" and accusing, once again, that liberal Hollywood's agenda is corrupting children and turning them into "occu-toddlers." They also turned their sights on the new adaptation of Dr. Seuss's The Lorax. They claim that both movies "demonize the 1%" and that people "offended" by these movies should fight back by... littering. Don't believe me? Watch the video and get ready to facepalm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuFcWkFJZgk
Now I can understand (barely) how a conservative could possibly have an issue with The Lorax since it deals with criticizing the logging industry and promoting the dangers of excessive defore

Yes, comments are disabled on her YouTube video. But honestly, why does everyone see this as a "problem?" I know it's common wisdom to assume that if you hide comments you're "scared" of receiving criticism or some other bullshit, but think beyond that please.
1) Comments enabled would just allow hate speech and actual sexism to persist because the internet has already determined that everyone hates Anita. No matter how thoughtful or constructive your criticisms might be, YouTube's 500 character limit isn't the best place to give it, plus it would be drowned out by the trolls and haters spewing negativity.
2) Her videos are also meant more as a teaching tool, not a vlog series, and as such are potentially going to be used in classrooms. Probably a good idea to keep nasty comments of homophobia, racism, sexism, etc off of the main source of the video. I think that's backed up beautifully by having her tell parents to preview the

Anita Sarkeesian's first video in the much ballyhooed Tropes Vs Women in Video Games has finally been released. The verdict? Acceptable. There's really nothing that offensive in the video at all, as it's mostly just a history of the "Damsels in Distress" trope and how it's used in video games. It's fact based and fairly interesting to watch.
The only two criticisms I have are as follows:
1. As someone who's done a LOT of research into the making of Donkey Kong (primarily for the short Flossed In Time storyline that I illustrated for Brent and Dan http://www.brentalflossthecomic.com/fit/?id=1 ), I can say without question that her info about how Popeye came to be turned into Donkey Kong is wrong.
Donkey Kong came about because Nintendo of America's president Minoru Arakawa placed a large order for Radar Scope, a popular Japanese game). By the time the game arrived in New York, months had passed and in

Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.
For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

"You somehow magically gained the ability to draw near-photorealistic buildings overnight and you choose to use this amazing newfound skill to draw a building in the background? Get serious dude."
This is a redrawing of Big Ben (using a different reference photo BTW) to show that I am actually capable of drawing architecture just fine. I only used the computer for the poster version because I wanted more control over it.
I'm gonna be leaving Big Ben the way it is in the poster. There's nothing to "own up to" about it other than saying "sorry I used such a recognizable image source of a popular and well known landmark as reference." I did not trace.
Curious that so many of the people crying "copyright infringement" over me using reference are also the same people who take my comics and make "parodies" of them by cutting, rearranging, and re-uploading th

Artist Intent vs Fan CriticismsThis has been a subject I've been interested in for years, and one which I personally struggle with on a near constant basis: Artist's intent versus fan criticisms. Before we begin I just want to make this clear that this journal is NOT about "ignoring criticisms" or any sort of endorsement of such an action. I'm gonna be accused of it, of course, but I just wanted to get that out of the way right now.Artist Intent vs Fan Criticisms1 year ago in Personal More Like This
As I've been observing fan interactions over the years I've noticed a severe increase in a sense of entitlement: IE: that if you love something enough you have a "right" to force the creators to change their content to suit your personal preferences. We saw this play out to the extremes this past summer with the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle, and we see it play out to a much lesser extent here on DA quite a bit.
Artists need feedback and criticisms to grow and improve their work, but at what point does it move beyond offering suggestions to help an artist improve to outright de
Missing the PointI've been noticing a trend lately where people seem to deliberately be missing the point behind stuff in order to complain. I used to think it was just me, as I watched people write up lengthy articles nitpicking and "debunking" a comic I made because they simply missed the point, but I've started seeing it happening to other people too.Missing the Point2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Recently over on The Oatmeal, artist Matthew Inman made a joke about guy gamers vs girl gamers. The joke was pretty simple: A guy gamer makes a mistake and gets bitched out by his fellow teammates online. Contrast to that, a girl gamer makes a mistake and her fellow teammates try to comfort her, tell her she's doing great, and make suggestive comments about hooking up. To me the joke was clear, guys treat girls differently online. However, that's not how the rest of the internet saw it...
From what I've read of the whole Oatmeal flare up, the reasons for the hate seem grounded in the fact he depicted the girl as blond and bubbly (ie: stupid) and not as
Tired of the Video Game IndustryWith the PS4 on the way, the gaming industry is alive once again reminding us how dull and boring and... wrong... it is. Here's a quick summary of some of the things I'm sick to death of hearing about when it comes to video games.Tired of the Video Game Industry1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Polygones = Emotion
I'm sure you've all seen the jokes, but this one stems from David Cage, who gushed over the tech demo of an old man's face for the PS4, remarking about how the only way to get "true" emotion is by bridging the uncanny valley with high resolution models, hi-def textures, and realistic shaders. "True emotion" of course can't be found in books, TV, or cartoons because none of those things can depict the exquisite details of a wrinkled face in true HD glory. I'm sorry to say this, David Cage, but if I can get an emotional response out of 16-bit pixel sprites from Chrono Trigger, or a pictureless book... your logic is faulty.
I'm really getting tired of everything wanting to connect to everything else. I know

EDIT: The app's name is not Something Positive. That's actually one of the comics the app is stealing from. Apparently the app changes it's name depending on the comic it's ripping off. There are about 161 web artists (not all necessarily comic related) who's work are being misused.
Disney vs Lucas ArtsIf ever you bring up Disney in a conversation, people immediately recite tired old issues with the company that haven't been true for a long time. For example, complaining about the excess of half-assed sequels. That was part of Michael Eisner's regime. When he left the studio the quality Disney was producing suddenly skyrocketed considerably. Likewise the excessive merchandising and branding of Disney related products has also ceased to be as all-consuming now that Eisner is gone. In fact, a lot of the main issues people had with Disney during the 90's and early 2000's was a result of Eisner.Disney vs Lucas Arts1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Since Eisner left, the Disney studio has done a REMARKABLE job in clearing their name of many of the atrocities they had committed during his regime. They promptly turned the animation department around and have even begun doing 2-D animated films again after Eisner said "no." Granted, at the moment 2-D is still in hiatus, but the situation isn't as dire as it use to be and there's still promise

It's been quiet lately. Too quiet. And I don't mean in the "something awful's bound to happen" kind of way, I mean in the "where the heck is everybody?" kind of way. We're more than halfway through the month and I haven't set a Daily Deviation since Halloween. No one has sent me any suggestions! And while DDs aren't the be-all end-all, this is indicative of a more deep-rooted problem.
Look, I'm one of you, so I understand the ins and outs of this community. We're not as unified as, say, the general Lit community, for twofold reasons.
First off, we're not even a community so much as a modular collective. We're categorized by our fandoms--general Lit is accessible to all, but nine times out of ten, a fan fic speaks a language that only other fans can understand. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some of my favorite fanfictions are the ones that go hardcore geek.
Secondly, our pastime is not one that gets a lot of respect. Fan fiction has a

To my credit, I had a little help before starting the game by using a seed which spawned me in the middle of a NPC village, thus giving me shelter and resources to survive my first few treacherous nights. But after a few days had passed and I got used to the controls and crafting, I ventured out and built my own little hut and started digging away.
The first few nights were exceptionally scary, even though I was in a nice safe house. But gradually I learned that Creepers are less creepy to me now than they are simply annoying, and I find myself being more creeped out by those ominous Ender Men.
After digging a very inefficient hole near my house and gather up more resources (cobblestone) than I could handle, I decided to venture out and build a bi
