5 LevelsI've spoken as guest speaker a number of times over the years (come visit me at SCAD Atlanta in January). While I'm not the best or most patient teacher, I think my strength is my pragmatic and blunt approach to the business side of comics. In order to help the students think of a "5 YEAR PLAN" (more on that in an upcoming post), I'll often break down the different page rate levels of comic book artists as a way to help analyze the playing field of our industry. If there's a ladder to success, what's wrong with defining each rung? I imagine such a breakdown helpful for moving up in most any industry, not just comics.5 Levels3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Here are the 5 LEVELS of comic artists as I see them--NOT based on talent but on page rates, popularity, and the prestige of the titles the artist works on. You might define them differently or have more than just 5, but I find that less-is-more when it comes to people being able to retain information.

Raffle: Win 400 Points
Update: the winner has been announced! http://roseonthegrey.deviantart.com/journal/Winner-Announced-for-Raffle-Win-400-Points-297598524
Points seem to make people happy so why not do a raffle. I have 400 points lying around anyway from my days of llama trading.
Rule: Fav this journal entry
Prize: 400 points
Ending: 4/21/12 (one week from now)
On the 21st, I will use a random number generator to randomly select a number x uniformly distributed from 1 to the number of favs the journal has (so every fav has an equal chance of winning). If you are the lucky deviant be the xth fav, then you win the 400 points. Easy as that.
(this is just a simple raffle to give away some unused points to try to brighten someone's day...you're not forced to jump through hoops or watch me or comment or do anything other than fav this journal for logistics reasons so it's easier to pick a winner...what do you have to lose? if I tacked on

Would you like a photography contest with a big prize in points?
Jeremy (K1ntar) and I have an idea about the subject, but we're curious about your response.
The subject of this contest should be about your most prized possession.
It doesn't have to be something expensive, it can be anything you love and cherish; something that has a great value for you.
What do you think? Is this a good idea and would you participate? Please let me know in comments.
(We're also open for suggestions)
Have a wonderful evening

Also, here's a handy point calculator tool to see how much money you'll be making per point and vice versa!
I've noticed it a lot lately, ever since points came to dA. You buy points, or get them through the llama trade, or a kind donation from someone, or you offer commissions for points.
Now, those of you who are offering commissions, I have realized one thing that stands true for almost ALL of you! You're offering your art for such a minscule amount of points, most likely without even realizing how much it's actually worth!
I've seen people offer full character drawings, coloured, etc. for the low, low price of 5 points. Think about how much that's actually worth. Points do NOT equal dollars! You can get 400 points for 5 dollars! This means that each point is worth 1.25 CENTS, no
Nintendo announces Pokemon RainbowNintendo just announced the third Pokemon Black and White game, its gonna be called... POKEMON RAINBOW! YEAH BOI!! I thought they ran out of colors for the Pokemon games but the smart people at Nintendo got some creative guys together and did an awesome looking cover for the game. Rumours has it that Rainbow will be the most open minded game up to date, you know how Pokemon Black and White was all about right and wrong, good and evil, yin and yang, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones that kind thing? Well Pokemin Rainbow totally gets rid of that, everyone is treated equally and happiness is the only thing that matters. Recreational drugs and casual sex is also highly encouraged, you can dress up your Pokemon however way you want without anyone judging you (As you can clearly see in the cover). Unfortunately this can be quite controversial to the general public... but hey I appreciate Pokemon thinking ahead and having a modern mindset. I also heard that in the beginning of the game when theNintendo announces Pokemon Rainbow2 years ago in Personal More Like This

why I've lost touch to this placeI don't quite know how it happened that exactly tonight the idea for creating a post like this crept up to me, and the longer I think of it I see no particular reason either. it's one of these things that rambles in the back of your mind for long enough, yet you're never too aware of it ... and all of the sudden it bursts out to the world, or it is willing to, and you are the one to choose if you want that to be.why I've lost touch to this place1 year ago in Personal More Like This
now I've been on this website for long enough and it's either me or the website that changed in order for me to feel about it the way I do; even though I believe it is not quite the latter. I remember these times where I adored this website and it meant so much to me so I ended up spending ages browsing the width of galleries and art we have on here; now that hasn't changed, I'm still fascinated by some things that I find.
yet what something inside of me started to think is that this place has become yet another place that just scratches along the surface and doesn't dig deepe

What's the Journal Portal?
News, blogs, and journals have been merged into one, unifying these systems in order to make them simpler to use and more consistent in appearance and functionality. In bringing them together, now categorized as deviations, they're able to receive the same great benefits as all deviations on the deviantART network. Including the following:
Using the Journal Portal, you'll be able to look through an endless stream of content. Much like deviations, you may now flick through journals quickly. View Newest to find what's hot right now in the deviantART community, or view Popular t

If you're new to Stash, find out more about it here: http://devbug.deviantart.com/journal/Stash-215498179
The latest changes: Sta.sh is now a separate section of the deviantART Network - with its own header, and its own look.
Here's a sneak peek!
"Stash" no longer exists on your Submit menu, but instead can be gotten to one of two ways:
You can pick "Sta.sh" from your main profile menu.. next to Logout and Settings
Or, you can type http://sta.sh into your address bar
Note: to switch back to deviantART, pick the "deviantART" item from the Sta.sh main menu.

A few simple photography tipsThought Id share a few simple yet effective photography tips for the creative photographer.A few simple photography tips1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Macro done easy
Set your lens to its closest focusing range and move physically towards the subject until it is sharp.
If you are using longer lenses it really helps to lay down and hold the camera and lens almost like you are shooting a gun, and remember your breathing when shooting.
This is also a great technique for bokeh shots, with a 50 mm at its closest focusing range and background further away you will blow the background to bits.
Donīt be stationary
It is very easy to put down a tripod and just stand on the same spot shooting, instead try moving around a bi, experiment with angles, left, right, high, low until you hit that perfect angle for the scene.
Slow the shutter
You donīt always need a ND filter to block out light to get even slower shutter speed, you can either use this technique with your hand or better with a cardboard (black if you got colored one).

Let me first say, I take full responsibility for feeling sorry for this person and letting you guys fall for it too. Normally I research, research, and research. This time I let my own emotions come first and let this person play us all.
Now, if you're wondering what THAT was about as well, then I suppose you haven't read this.
I put off writing a journal until now, knowing it would look like it was done out of spite. I had hoped everyone would have read the BHB journal, but I quickly found that many of you were in the dark about this matter. While some of it might sound far fetched or just dickery- believe me. The mass of it is true. When I got back and read it I dismissed it myself. Then I started having second thoughts and looked into the proof and links.
