I used zBrush for modeling, keyshot for rendering and Photoshop, to bring it all together.
I. a basic, matte rendering out of keyshot. Notice that the model isn't very detailed at all, it's just about the general design, perspective and lighting.
II. The simple, unshaded materials are used for masking (pure red, blue and green can be selected over the channels menu in Photoshop).
III. The rendering is masked out and ready...
IV. ...for the integration into my matte (a fast sketch I used as a background for most of the insects).
V. I rendered out several different passes...
VI. ...and brought them together with different blendmodes. I mostly use overlay, soft light, linear dodge and multiply, but there is no secret formula. This stage is heavily based on experiments. I try to keep what looks fine, and throw away what doesn`t. I generally tried to work out different materials here.
VII. I added different structures with overlay/softlight. The clean rendering will become more realistiv this way.
VIII. Painting. my goal was to bring a more natural feel to the painting. I used the general form of my sculpting to align my detail and to finalize the design I had in mind. Basicly, I just used one brush (square, with a bit of texture) for the painting.
IX. Finalizing, color correction, shiny eyes
