Mentorship Project - Assignment #2 SilhouettesSo remember the time I said I'd post the assignment up really quick like? I'm a horrible liar and I am sorry.
SO anyway let's get this thing officially rolling! YEAH! Before work pulls me into the abyss again.
We're going to be working on silhouettes!

A silhouette is the image of a person, an object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single colour, usually black, its edges matching the outline of the subject.
"When an object's silhouette is difficult to make out, we have a tough time keeping track of what we're seeing. It's why so many comics and drawings use the visual shorthand out outlining figures and objects. The shades and values of an object are secondary to the basic shape when it comes to recognition. As such, effectively managing silhouettes is a vital tool for visual narratives." - Aaron Diaz

I'm going through all my notes now, hang tight folks!
Taking a page from my former Professor Krishna's book, and as a gift to all my wonderful followers, I'm going to offer this up to everyone.
Several things brought this on, and it would probably be a long and boring read (tl;dr as the internet would say) so I will spare you all the details. Essentially it boils down to:
1. I Love helping artists
2. I enjoy the enthusiasm of people wanting to learn something new. It feeds my own inspiration.
Now I make no claims to be an expert or master in anything - quite the contrary. I am in a constant state of critique and am hyper critical of every work I post up here. I also recognize one thing I really want is hard to come by without offering up some dough - and that's a mentor. I'm not downing any artist who offers their
Writing, Reading, Blogging... 6 months in.This is going to be a bit of a departure from my normal journals. I'm one of those people that tends to pop up now and then in between projects and "update" everyone on how I am and what I'm doing... once in awhile I'll even post an art feature... but I don't do a lot of "articles". Today, at least for an hour, that's going to change. Why? Because after spending the last 6 months of my life blogging and immersing myself in the writer community, I feel I've learned a few things that deserve to be shared here on DeviantART, where the writing community tends to feel like a string of small, secluded islands.Writing, Reading, Blogging... 6 months in.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Don't get me wrong, DeviantART is GREAT for artists as far as community goes. There's an amazing amount of people here who do their best to help out their fellow artists and support the new ones. Unfortunately, the writing community here is a lot smaller, and a lot more... closed off. Most serious writers who post their work to DeviantART are met with a chirping cricket. People may rea

IT'S OKAY TO BE SAD OVER A CHARACTER DEATH. BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT THE REASON SOMEONE DIES IN MY COMIC IS BECAUSE THEY HAD FAINTED INGAME. BY THE RULES OF NUZLOCKE, FAINT EQUALS DEATH.
Seriously, I even posted my godamn battle notes in the video for comparision. It was not me purposely trying to kill off a character out of drama. It did happen and I am drawing a COMIC BASED OFF OF MY OWN GAMEPLAY. The reason it looks that way is because I was able to build his character up for over a year so you guys get attached to my characters. I wanted you guys to like them or at least know about them before some of them got killed ingame.
FYI, MORE DEATHS ARE COMING IN THIS COMIC. I cannot assure whether this will be right away or later, but KNOW of it. It's a godamn nuzlocke. As I said before, it is okay if you were legitimately sad about this. I'm sorry it had to go that way bu

Animation SituationI've been rushing at breakneck speeds to finish my animation in time for the official submission deadline tomorrow ... or, today, by now actually. However, there are still little fixes I want to make to Santiago's introduction scenes, as well as some revisions to the "finished" sequences with Louis and James, so I'm holding back on uploading the clips to Youtube.Animation Situation3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Featured Prints Artist: Stanley Lau
Stanley Lau a.k.a. Artgerm is a busy child as an illustrator, designer, concept artist and art director. Born and bred in Hong Kong, he soaked up his creativity and interest in arts early on and trained his artistic skills and knowledge ever since in a never-ending process. Filled with creative juices to the top of his head, Stanley is active all day with various projects at his Imaginary Friends Studios designing art and concepts for computer and card games companies, animation houses or comic publishers. He is also founder of his own advertising & design agency and a t-shirt label, and when Stanley is not working on any of these, he can be found playing video games across many platforms or the occasional karaoke session. We are proud to feature Artgerm as our Prints Artist of the Month in a very interesting interview.

Sounds like a fun contest and want to participate? Awesome! Here are some guidelines for the contest.
Draw any of the MoU cast (human, Pokemon) in an outfit that they would not normally wear!
Gijinkas of the Pokemon cast are allowed (dead 'mons too!)
Doing a crossover outfit entry is okay (i.e. KLK, SnK). BUT since creativity is part of the judging criteria (see below), please keep in mind that a entry with original outfits (or even outfits that take influence/reference to a show without copy-pasting) will be rated higher in that category.

If you are considering going into the industry....If you are an artist or want to be one, especially if you want to get into the VFX industry, you should watch this:If you are considering going into the industry....2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It touches on a few things I feel are important to understand as an artist and even as consumers of art:
1.) Art is not an exact science. It can be difficult to put a price tag on it, let alone the often very complicated processes of making it.
2.) Computers are tools that facilitate our work but they DO NOT do the work for us.
3.) Don't get into this industry for the money. If you go into this line of work, you do it because you love it. If someone happens to get lucky or has a really great idea and he/she hits it big, GREAT! Good for him/her. But don't go in expecting that to happen to you. Chances are it won't. If you are lucky, you will find a nice middleclass job you can support yourself and your family on for a while...... until....
4.) Unfortunately, a lot of employers see artists as disposable. When they no longer need you, they will kick you to the curb an

Need Help Finding Voice ActorsHey guys!Need Help Finding Voice Actors1 year ago in Personal More Like This
So now I finally have some cash in my Valiard Kitty, it's time to start planning an animated trailer for my novel! Nothing extravagant. Just 30 seconds or so. Something to help spread the word.
I can totally do the visuals, but as for the audio, I am absolutely the worst person to try doing that.
Okay, I know there are people who do voice acting on commission over the Internet. I just have zero idea of where to start looking for these people. I sort of remember Newgrounds as being a place to look, but I also remember that Newgrounds is a deep, dark, sticky pit of nope.
Anybody here know where I can start my search?
I'll probably only need a guy who can pull off an upper-class English accent. Get some Gangfield voice-overs goin' awww yiss son tea and crumpets dawg. :iconswaggydoggyplz:
Also, anybody know where I can find someone to do the composition of the music? I

video sketchesyes you guessed it.video sketches1 year ago in Personal More Like This
i saw my husbands video and felt the urge of wanting to make one as well. why? dunno.. I just realized I wanted to relax and sketch whatever so I turned on my recorder XD
its funny, there have been so many times I wanted to demonstrate the way both me and my husband write our comics. but I just couldn't get around to catching that moment when I had a certain idea I wanted to turn into a strip.
With me it happens gradually, especially now that I have a ton of work on the side so I can draw an idea in a few doodles, and let it sit around. then after a few days I come back to it.. or after a month or after 3 months. sometimes the idea is good, and sometimes it isn't. sometimes when you think you had the best idea, you wake up the next morning and think.. what was i thinking ?? XD
This can never fit there!
But sometimes its a fun or interesting idea so you keep it anyway XD
well this video shows how the ideas are born. I'm pretty sure many of you are f

Let me tell you, I've dealed with some shitty people (yes you are shitty people because you go out of your fucking way to gather people JUST to make an artist feel bad for their success and you can very well be doing other things with your life to solve whatever damn problems you have) on adoptables and I'm not going to tolerate it further but people know that and it's been smooth sailing so far. But of course the same shitty type of people are around that rag on other people's success and then instead of getting inspired and doing something to get money (OR EVEN JUST TALK SMACK ABOUT THEM BEHIND THEIR BACKS I MEAN COME ON, ARE YOU SO SELF ENTITLED YOU CAN'T KEEP THAT STUFF TO YOURSELF?) will be around and harrassing those in the adoptable community. I've seen people from sellers to purchasers being harassed and it's really fucking disgusting.

Want to Work in the Industry?:iconbobbie-the-jean: made a very good journal entry where she briefly discusses what to expect in the film industry, and I thoroughly recommend reading it to familiarize yourself with what it's like:Want to Work in the Industry?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I also recommend following her link to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lcB9u-9mVE&feature=youtu.be which really drives home some of the issues with the demographic for artists/VFX in the world right now. As an animation graduate we are made aware of these discrepancies while still at college, and the hefty workloads and looming deadlines with zero compensation and lack of sleep could be considered a precursor to what we could expect in future.
A lot of people still seem to have rose-coloured glasses over their eyes in regards to what it must be like to be a "good artist" hired in the industry; this is the reality of it. You have to take the good with the bad, there are no guarantees, and you really, really have to love what you're doing.

New Program: MischiefSo there's this program called Mischief that I feel like not a lot of people may know about right now. I only know about it thanks to my tumblr dashboard.New Program: Mischief2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Hmm, to talk about it would be easier in bullet points so let's get to that.
Infinite canvas, resolution, and dimension. It's all specialized textured vector so no matter how small you draw you can export it to a .psd or .jpg of ANY RESOLUTION AND ANY DIMENSION which is pretty fucking amazing and helps those people who can't handle heavy programs or preset resolutions like in SAI or Photoshop.
It's like drawing on paper. Like to me it's really forgiving paper. The select tool is pretty much like a canvas cropping device-- you select and then you can export the selected area as the cropped image. Otherwise it doesn't do nice things like resize, scale, or rotate. (Just yet anyway, I think they're still developing.) So it's a good practice tool.
It's really smooth and pleasant to draw
So you've decided to talk to an artistHey everybody, this is going around over on tumblr, but I feel like it's just as relevant here and it's a really good informational post for people that have/want to have good dealings and interactions with online artists. Because seriously, these are really good things to know. (I mean, I've been pestered by almost all of these at some point or another, and if people had read these they might have saved me a lot of annoyance) So give it a read if you'd like. The original post comes from www.phantom42.tumblr.comSo you've decided to talk to an artist2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Don’t tell an artist, “SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!" or "I would totally buy that!" if you’re not ready and/or willing to back it up with an actual purchase. Artists love that you love the piece, but often produce pieces/quantities based on apparent interest and potential customers. Gauges of potential buyers and gauges of general interest are both very important, but they are very different.
