The "Mathias" out in public was the "Mathias" Allistor had to be talking about. The moment you saw him in the office, you spotted him doing something along the lines of a pep talk for his coworkers. The very way in which his hands moved along with his body as he talked made his words enunciate themselves in ways his mouth didn’t need to. Mathias was fairly tall. The advantage of height gave him a successful-looking edge that made him stand out among even the thickets of crowds.
What captured your attention most of all, however, was his smile. On that faithful day when Allistor had introduced you to his friend, Mathias instantly won your heart over with his bright, beaming smile. Everything about his stance, the air he carried, and the way he delivered oozed charisma. You, like everyone else, wanted to be around him. Just laying your eyes on him made your heart beat a little faster and your breathing a littler shorter.
“Oh! ___________, over here!&

When you woke up, the first thing you noticed was the smell. This wasn’t your home. Heck, it wasn’t even your car. Where was the familiar smell of sharp cologne and fresh-baked bread?
Crap, my head… you groaned and rubbed your temples. Everywhere hurt. Your breath tasted absolutely foul, it was dark, and— What in the world were you wearing?
These weren’t your clothes. Instead of the light jacket and jeans you were wearing from last night, your body was covered with a dress shirt much too large for your body. It might have even doubled up as a dress. And when you pressed your nose to the fabric…
It has the same smell as him… you thought, your eyelids growing heavy with the familiar scent.
You clutched the shirt close to your chest. It wasn’t too often when Allistor would show this side of him. More than anyone, you knew he preferred not to have company. Perhaps tha

Thank goodness your job had such flexible hours. Had your job been anything else, you would have had to run around in circles calling up what’s-her-face or who’s-his-name to give you a ride to the main city. Today, however, was a leisure day. You had the entire day to yourself; you could do whatever you so pleased.
It wasn’t like hanging around Mathias’ apartment was interesting. There wasn’t anything for you to do since he was usually gone, and everything was already so clean. At least you wouldn’t have to worry about picking up after him like an official housewife—not that the two of you were married, of course.
I guess I should go grab his car, then, you thought and went to put on your shoes.
The route to Allistor’s bar was about a thirty-minute walk; it wasn’t far to get to, but if someone was drunk, there was no guarantee that he—or she—would be able to get home safely. As a result, you al

Fifteen messages, you sighed as you pocketed your phone. You had a feeling Mathias would try to call you and find out where you were so you had switched your phone to its silent mode when you drove to Allistor’s bar just the night before.
“Are you going to reply?” Allistor asked noticing your conflicted expression.
“I don’t know,” you said. “Well, I’m going to talk to him either way, but I don’t feel that doing it over the phone is the best method.”
Your friend’s emerald eyes narrowed. “______________, remember what I said—”
“I know, I know,” you interrupted him. “I might say something different the moment I look at him, is that right?”
“It’s not just that,” Allistor added. “Who knows what his mental state is like after knowing you left him?” He paused. “You never did tell me what happened.”
You rubbed your neck

From afar, the dragon hunters’ fortress looked nothing more than a humble shadow of a mountain with smoke rising from its high peaks. Now, however, the sheer size of the building was more intimidating than you had imagined. The sky was pitch black even though only a few minutes ago, the sky had been a bright white from the sun shining past the snowy clouds. Black and dark purple ashes were scattered everywhere, and a sickly sweet smelled filled the air as you and Emil approached the side entrance to the fortress.
“I don’t like this place,” you whispered to your dragon as you clung onto his blanket like a guiding rope.
“I don’t like it either, ___________,” Emil replied in the same volume of your voice. “I can sense a great amount of negative energy coming from inside this place. We’re going to have to be very careful.”
“I understand,” you said.

The day was drawing near. You could feel it.
In truth, you didn’t want to hold onto grudges forever. Life was too short to fill it with hate. Allistor had to be the one most taken aback by your sudden decision. You knew he was angry with you. Actually, perhaps “angry” was too strong a word for what he was feeling towards you. “Disappointed” was a better way to put it, and Allistor was so disappointed in you that he had refused to talk to you ever since. He wouldn’t answer his phone, he wouldn’t look at you when you visited his bar, and he wouldn’t ask about how your relationship with Mathias was going.
You and Mathias were doing just fine, though. Mathias didn’t treat you poorly. If anything, he was expressing his love for you even more. He didn’t drink, he didn’t wander out late with his friends, and he never hurt you. Even so, you couldn’t help that something was keeping

“Hey, I’ve been wondering this for some time, you two, but how does a dragon get his—or I guess her—title?” you asked while walking along the bank of the river.
You had been walking for a short time after you had begun to feel negative emotions heading downstream of the river. That was a good sign since that meant you wouldn’t have to worry about running into Yao or his family members any time soon.
“You really want to know something like that?” he unenthusiastically asked.
Being used to his normally cold demeanor, you timidly fumbled your hands around in a nervous tangle and looked down at the ground.
“I was hoping if I asked enough times—that is, if we travelled for this long—you would finally tell me sooner or later,” you bashfully admitted.
“I told you before, hu—” Lukas caught himself when Mathias raised his eyebrows. He groaned and tried again.

The Divine Keeper of the Sapphire Flames turned around and looked at the two of you on his back.
“I can imagine carrying one of you, but two is a different story,” he snorted.
“What’s wrong with ___________ being carried on your back?” Mathias asked.
You frowned. “I think he was talking about you, Mathias, not me. I’m the one carrying Emil’s soul, remember?”
“Oh yeah,” Mathias said like the thought had completely escaped his mind. From the little time you had spent with him, you knew that forgetting would have been a complete possibility.
“What do you accomplish by returning to Eldur Mountain?” Lukas jumped in. “You know there could be dragons up there that won’t accept the fact that you aren’t able to return to your true form. They won’t be as lenient as I am.”

As expected, Lukas had woken up long before you did and caught breakfast. Today, breakfast consisted of yet another rabbit and a small bird whose species was beyond recognition thanks to having its feathers plucked and its skin already roasted.
"Lukas, you've always eaten in front of me as a dragon. Why are you having problems eating right now?" you asked.
The dragon rolled his sapphire eyes as though you had asked that question a thousand times over.
"I don't find it comfortable eating as a human," he confessed. "Besides, with the way I normally eat added with the things I eat, I would think you would find it unappealing to watch."
At least he has that consideration, you thought as you took your first bite of the bird.
While you were eating, Lukas looked over his shoulder.
"At this pace, we should be able to see the mountain in two days' time," he said. "From there, I don't think climbing the mountain will be possible so we'll have to fly." Then, he returned his att

There was still the debate of whether or not keeping your mouth shut was a good thing or not spinning inside your head.
There’s no way Lukas was really telling the truth when he said something like that, you thought to yourself. He’s got it all wrong, and besides, he’s a dragon. He couldn’t possibly know the significance of kissing another person—and a human at that.
You groaned and shuffled around in your spot. It had been an extremely long day. Lukas had said you would need all the rest you could get because there was no telling when you would be able to stop and take a break again. However, no matter how hard you shut your eyes, or how many imagined dragons you had counted flying overhead, or how often you shifted into a different sleeping position, you couldn’t bring yourself to fall asleep.

Lukas was the first one to speak up.
“That couldn’t be…” he whispered. “There were so many of us. I know the humans have said that my brother and I were the only dragons left in the world, but only five of us…How is that possible?”
“There were many reasons,” Berwald said, “but I think you know which ones were the biggest.” That being said, he looked over to Mathias who was still on his friend’s back.
“I don’t understand,” Lukas growled. “Why would they choose being a human over staying as a dragon?”
Berwald shrugged. “It’s just their choice. Maybe they had an awakening moment and decided being human was better. That or they just forgot somewhere along the way.”
Mathias jumped in. “What about Peter? He was so young. He has to still be around.”
The golden dragon shook his head sadly. “The hunters got to him nearly forty years ago.”

When you opened your eyes, it was already dark. You must’ve blacked out when Emil threw you.
“Emil!” you cried and shot up out of the water. Immediately, you stood up to start your search for the dragon, but a chill wind blew through your wet clothes freezing you to the bone.
“G-Gr-Great-t-t…” you shivered and sank back into the water. Now you knew why the servants back at the castle always said the nobles took a long time in the baths—it was too cold to want to come out, but you knew you had to get out eventually. Then again, how far would you make it with your messed up ankle?
Suddenly, a different wind blew at you but from above. When you looked up, you could distinctly see the shape of a blue dragon gliding down towards you. It must’ve been Lukas. He was going to be furious with you.

“My tears!” you shouted at the top of your lungs when Mathias handed over his cape to your dragon and you gave his brother one of your layers.
“All those hours I spent mourning for you! All of those tears wept and swollen eyes and fits of hiccups! Give them back! I almost went mad, damn you! Give them all back, I said!”
Emil blushed and shied away behind his cape. Lukas, on the other hand, stepped in front of his little brother to defend the both of them from your onslaught of meanderings and punches.
“_____________, you have to understand that if my brother’s body didn’t expire—Hey! Stop that! I mean it! Don’t make me do something drastic!”
“You’re the worst!” you screeched and continued to pummel the How-Dare-He-Lie-To-You Sucker Dragon Dung Fish-Face over and over again. All the while, the other dragons were watching in mild amusement.
Emil tried to step in and hold you back.

The connection between a vampire and a soul mate was something that couldn't be absolutely explained let alone be put into words. Nevertheless, even when sworn enemies, a vampire would bypass all instinctual urges to flee or hunt for the sake of that one significant other—such was the complexity of the bond that tied the demon and the mortal together.
Roderich Edelstein's case was no exception. That night when he met the young woman, he knew there something was different. Nothing reached out to him telling him she was the one, but a feeling had stirred inside of him, telling him that there was something unexplainably remarkable about her.
Thinking about it, Roderich couldn't be sure if it was considered love at first sight—or rather, first bite—when his eyes fell upon her own emerald ones after he had taken her to his hotel room. There had been something different about her blood. Sweet. Irresistible. A ghost of a voice had told him that

A lungful of air whooshed out of your mouth condensing into icy wisps floating on the cold air. You breathed in again. Out. In. Silence. Listening.
Your eye twitched.
“Where are you?”
“And my brother?"
He’s here. Just hang on. We’re coming, Emil.
“I’ll be waiting.”
When you opened your eyes again, you saw that the temperature dramatically decreased, and the winds began to cut through your clothes. Lukas was waiting for you staring at you the entire time.
“Well?” he spoke up. “Did you reach him?”
You nodded. “I was able to speak to him for a little bit, but it didn’t last for very long.”
“Did you learn anything?”
You frowned and shook your head. “I lost him before I could ask. I told him that you’re with me, though.

You sighed. For dragons well over three hundred years old at the least, the Blade of the Ruby Seas and the Golden Sentinel could really act like children when butting heads.

The temperature of a dragon was notably hotter than that of a human. You had remembered coming in contact with Mathias and Emil in the past; both of them had been warm to the touch despite not bothering to wear gloves in the middle of winter. Dragons were truly remarkable beings.
Now, even as your eyes lay staring off into nothingness, your sight had increased by astronomical amounts; through the eyes of a dragon, you were able to see as far as the highest visible peak of Eldur Mountain. Beyond the vicious black clouds was said to be a large fiery pit, a haven for the dragons and the sacred place where their souls were reborn into new bodies.
As Mathias breathed through his nostrils, you could see the visible puffs of condensed water solidifying into water droplets all around. Unlike a human, it was as though there really was a fire in his lungs. The little puffs of humidity that came out of your and ~~~~~~~~~’s nostrils were nothing compared to the dragons’.

When you woke up that morning, you noticed the castle noises below you were significantly livelier. Maids were scampering to keep the roof clean of as much snow as possible, and the numbers of soldiers increased for the case of an emergency. As you remembered from the night before, a handful of nobles from the neighboring castles had taken a quick voyage to witness the magnificent sight: a dragon being sacrificed.
The three days was up, and in that time, the winter only grew worse. A blizzard was now considered part of a normal day. Only the hardiest of animals could survive in such a brittle environment.
What disturbed you most of all wasn't knowing whether or not the sacrifice would actually work or not; it was whether or not you would have a job after all of this. Surely with there being only one dragon left in the world, it would have died of loneliness, and if there were no dragons, there wouldn't be a need for a dragonkeeper. Still, there was little you could do to pr
