Moving up to better freelance jobs (short version)We all start off with very little experience or understanding of how freelance jobs are supposed to work. starting with smaller/faster/easier jobs is a good way to ease yourself into the market. As we (freelancers and clients) each gain more and more experience dealing with good work partners and bad ones, we need to learn to identify and EMBODY the characteristics which we value in potential work partners. When choosing your next job, there is more to consider than just the artist's talent and the client's money. For example:Moving up to better freelance jobs (short version)1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
1) Great clients and freelancers tend to be professional, polite, organized, objective, and hard working. They set clear goals, agree on reasonable payment and meet deadlines in an efficient manner. The best clients and freelancers tend to seek each other out and develop ongoing relationships and successful business ventures. They communicate in a timely manner and sometimes contribute more than expected. You may find a few of these on DA, but they tend to prefer
Marching Men in High Heeled ShoesI know the title seems funny. After all, the sight of over 100 men from all walks of life, ages and races marching down the streets of my town wearing stilettos, I'll admit, is quite comical. Some even took it a bit further, not only wearing fancy foot wear, but the skirts to match. Yes, it was a strange and silly picture.Marching Men in High Heeled Shoes3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
At least at first glance. While many might have been focused on the flash of leg and red heels, if you noticed the shirts they were wearing, and the signs they held, it became obvious this was not a march to laugh at.

Welcome to the annual International Walk a Mile in Her Shoes March.
Hosted by our local Battered Persons Advocacy, the event not only raised money for the local shelters who help many women find respite from abusive situations, but also raised community awareness for a very serious problem.

Writing and Characters in a Mafia-like Setting
Ok, so no one here has ever been in an actual mafia, nor do we want to make it too dark, but as a group we still need to have some kind of plausible standard for exactly what our mafia is like. In order to establish this median, and thus render the plot wholly more realistic, research is needed!
Here I've provided a few links for you to get started. I highly recommend all members, accepted or not, look at this; we will be doing more faction-oriented things later on so it's important to understand the dynamics within each group!

Don't let this short list fool you, there are TONS MORE of Nagel sets available for free online, just google them. There are a few brushes in my arsenal that I can't share since they are proprietary brushes from studios that I worked at, but they aren't anything more sophisticated than what the Nagels can do.

Know your Basics - TexturesThere are a lot of tutorials out there on how to create / photograph texture as well as how to use them on a technical level, but the question of why and when to use textures is rarely touched. This article wants to fill that gap and therefore looks at texures from a slightly different perspective.Know your Basics - Textures2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Textures in Manips as you know them
For a photomanipulator, the first thing that comes to mind when hearing the word "texture" are images that can be used in soft light or overlay mode to texture a manipulation or parts thereof. What most manipulators therefore have in mind, are images like the following:
Beautiful textures, sure, and useful, too, but have you ever thought of doing more with them than the aforementioned overlays? And have you ever considered using other kinds of textures, too?

New Brushes In Sight for Arrival
Hello everyone, now normally we release an exercise yesterday but today we are letting you guys know we are working to create easy to download brush packs that you guys will be able to download in a single click! So the focus for the next two weeks is going to be shifted, which would normally be on exercises to creating some fantastic brushes. This has been something I’ve wanted to update for some time. Let us know HERE.
I already have new metal brushes, silhouette brushes, and painterly brushes
'anime' isn't a styleAfter seeing so many attempts to shove a broad range of artistic styles into one generic category, I wanted to get this point across.'anime' isn't a style3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Categorizing anything that vaguely resembles art from a japanese animation under one title is basically the same as taking all science fiction and calling it 'asimov'.
The term 'anime' was coined to describe japanese animation. To label an art in which the subject and content had nothing to do with an existing animation makes no real literal sense. As it is with other genres, categorizing works of art with what actually appears in the art makes far more sense and is much less confusing.
Artists make many different stylistic choices when they draw, and choosing to adopt a more east asian approach is just one of them. There are plenty more things in a picture that you can appreciate than just that 10% of 'animu'.

Stamps; For Beginners and Beyond
I have been contemplating an article that explains and showcases the power of stamps in the dA community for some time, and it seems almost appropriate in light of recent events, to create this article now.
This article aims to cover common questions around stamps, and provide links to resources, for creating stamps. Not only does this article aim to target beginners or those that do not know about stamps, but it also aims to feature some of the most creative examples of how artists have managed to do so much with such a small canvas. This article can even provide tips and inspiration for seasoned and experienced stamp-makers, whilst encouraging the appreciation of stamps by everyone all-round.
So what are stamps?
I'm sure this is a question that many of you encountering this article are already asking. Stamps are small, pixel creations (traditionally 99x56px in size), that originate from righ
The five fingers of Abstract ArtAbstract Hand Painting is one of the oldest known forms of Art, and may be at the very origin of civilization itself. Depictions of the the human hand on cave walls may have started the ball rolling for Art, Math, Writing, and Science. Much like modern graffiti the original cave painters painted the hand symbol with a simple meaning "I was here" "I" meaning an entire person, not a drawing of a person, but a "hand" symbolizing that person. (an abstract symbol of existence)The five fingers of Abstract Art3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Cave hand painting may have first started as a hand pressed into sand, (or a cut hand covered in blood?) and later cavemen may have looked for a more permanent depiction method of the hand symbol. The mixing of permanent dyes in the painting process may be thought of as the first ever scientific experiments performed by mankind. (Through the scientific process of trial, and error.)
These simple stencil paintings were made by placing one hand on a cave wall, and spray painting over the

Creative Week: Giveaway + IntroductionWhat is Creative Week?Creative Week: Giveaway + Introduction2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Every year, I take a week away from my job to do nothing but photoshoots, in order to challenge myself and improve my skills as a photographer. Despite working for the best company in the world, my career is not in photography. This sometimes makes it difficult to find the right kind of time and inspiration to capture what I want. My annual 'Creative Week,' is a way for me to do what I love without the worry of heading into work the next day. I can focus on my creativity, and nothing more. Every year I make sure to up the ante, and this year I'll be working with a lot more talent than I have in the past, on bigger productions.
This is my third Creative Week, and similar to those in the past, I will be partnering with the wonderful Miki Sarroca (WingedInfinity). She will be serving as a make up artist, model, and she's done an incredible job of assisting me with organizing these shoots.

Photomanip: Working with TexturesWelcome!Photomanip: Working with Textures2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Textures are a critical part of so many photomanipulations, but they're not as easy to use as they appear. Below are some great examples of photomanipulations that, in my opinion, demonstrate excellent use of textures:
The goal of this article . . .
. . . is to serve as a resource for those of us who enjoy having textures be a predominant part of our photomanipulations and mixed media work so we can learn to use textures properly. Texture misuse or abuse can ruin an entire photomanipulation that otherwise might have been good. No matter how good we are at something, we can always grow to be better.
This journal represents the opinions of only one person: me, and it does not claim to be the end-all,

SORRY IT'S TAKING SO LONG!! USPS raised their rates for people outside the US and I have to make sure I have shipping for everyone in one action. Thank you everyone for your patience. I love you all. (it's true)
I wasn't able to get rid of these books as easily as I was thinking...so I still have them.
I'm running low on the couples books but I still have plenty of the rest.
I'm open back up and would really like to sell them all. Please! 8D
They're super useful and I really want to see people use them. So stop by the store!
The USPS did away with surface to air shipping overseas. That means I, unfortunately, have to charge an additional $40+ to anyone outside of the US (except for Canada, I think). So be aware of that.
How is everyone doing, btw? ...school started and everything else!

Sans serif — Roman
In this article/tutorial I will show you how to design a typeface. I will cover the basics and show you how to design advanced letters as well. There is so much I can talk about though, so if people like this article I might expand on this with future articles and get more into detail. I will only cover the design though, so you will have to research how to do the spacing and programming and turn your typeface into a usable font—or wait until I might do an article on that as well, but I don’t have such an article planned anytime soon.
What will we design?
I will first show you how to design some basic letters for a geometric sans typeface like Futura, because it utilizes geometric shapes, which is always my starting point for every typeface regardless of style. O
