Starving ArtistThe Starving ArtistStarving Artist11 months ago in Personal More Like This
This topic is about rates and wages that an artist should start to consider when taking on a new job. This is my advice, so take this as advice.
So let’s begin. As an artist you should know right away that you are valuable. You can recreate people’s imagination and ideas into reality. You are the one who brings people together to be able to all see the vision for the final product. This is valuable. Keep this in mind when you take new jobs. Think about how many hours you plan on slaving over iteration after iteration. Because even though you may have a voice, if you agree to whatever the arrangement are, you must live up to their standards. So make sure you are paid well.
Imagine a client asks you to do 50 hours of work for only $500 dollars. That’s $10 an hour. That is not enough. You can go get a job that could pay you as much if not more, without being an artist. I’ve seen people’s salaries as low as 30k a year. This is not acc

Commission prices would be decided on what kind of drawing you want. But it would be no higher than 30 points. 30 points and going down.
Sketches would be at only 1 point.
Pictures with no shading or lighting flat pictures with no background would be for 3 points. w/ background 4 points.
Fully colored pictures with shades and all that w/o background would be for 9 points. w/ background 10 points.
And the rest well it's for me to decide the prize. Like if you want a fully colored picture of your character with background it would be ten points. If you want two people in the picture it would be 3+ points.
A flat picture with no background would look like this
A picture fully detailed person with background ((Of course not this shitty of a background))
A group picture with background((Doesn't matter how ma

Norman Rockwell Tribute
Few artists have so definitively reflected the lives of average Americans as Norman Rockwell.
He began his lifetime dedication to being the “America’s Illustrator” as the 19-year-old art editor for Boys’ Life, the house publication of the Boy Scouts of America. A few years later he assumed his more famous position at The Saturday Evening Post, though he never b
No more excuses, it's time to improve your art! You’re probably well acquainted with the old proverb “practice makes perfect.” And while I don’t fully believe that perfection is attainable, because the very notion of perfection is somewhat subjective, getting better at anything requires both time and effort. I’m going be very blunt here; if you want to improve your artistic skill you need to actually practice. No more excuses, it's time to improve your art!10 months ago in Art Features More Like This
My heart goes out to everyone here who is struggling to improve so don’t feel that I’m purposely singling you out here. However throughout my time on dA (and in real life) I’ve met artists begging for advice on how to quickly improve and sadly when I tell them to begin practicing the excuse is always ‘well, I don’t really have the time for that.’
And I ain’t got time for yo attitude.
You do have the time

The art of improvement5/4/2015 UPDATE: Added preface at the beginning and Inspiration at the end! added some thoughts on some other things I wanted to share. The art of improvement1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Alright, so this is a comment and question I've been receiving a lot from people!
How did you improve so fast?
Firstly, I want to say I do not think of myself as a professional artist, teacher or someone who "knows the secret to becoming a master artist". These are just things that I have picked up over the years, and noticed so I thought I might as well share my experience with improvement in effort to help others find their own paths of improvement and learning as artists. There are still many things I have to learn, and wish to improve about my own art! The path of an artist is never ending, in my opinion!
I consider the beginning of my journey when I withdrew from college. I had decided to take a year off from school, to explore myself more as a person, gain confidence and rethink my path that I wanted to take in school. Of course,

5 ways to get into the creative zoneDear, deviantart fellow artists5 ways to get into the creative zone9 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Sometimes we tend to feel unmotivated and uninspired to do anything... but there are also those blissful moments of creativity, when inspiration strikes and time goes by unnoticed. Not getting distracted, going with the flow, so merged in the process, that there is no need to do anything else until the work gets done. But how to get in that mood more often..? Here are some ways/tips that helped me over the time.
1. Prepare your work space
Make the place you work as comfortable and useful as possible. Clean the desk from all the clutter, gather your tools in a most accessible way, organize in order to avoid mess. Set the according light, have some inspiring quotes, goals written around.
2. Avoid distractions
Turn off the internet. Or close all the tabs, you don’t need. Especially, social media sites. Don’t check the news/e-mail/mobile phone all the time. Get in the place where
How to Become Popular on DeviantartSince I joined on deviantart I have been fascinated by many works.. Really nice works which have a lot of favourites and others which havent. I questioned myself why it could happen? Why works so wonderful and people so talented can be unknown in this community? How to Become Popular on Deviantart6 years ago in Art Features More Like This
So, I decided to write this article.
For it, I sent this three questions for some pop artists:
- What's the secret to become popular?
- Why do some people become popular so fast, doing ordinary art, and others which do amazing art cant be popular?
- Is there any trick to become popular? Like watching a lot of people, faving everything you can, posting a lot of journals or promoting contests?
Some of them answered me so kindly and fast, others answered me in a way kinda rude and others didnt answer..
By now, I have some ideas, some quotes and I want to show you all information I got about it.
So, lets start:
First, I must say there are several ways to become popular. To make this article, I did a

Introducing thoughtART Technology
A few years ago, deviantART teamed up with several university laboratories across the United States, and we are proud to finally announce the fruits of our efforts. Thanks to recent advancements in neurological science, we're unveiling a revolutionary new platform in artistic creation. Our device uses touch-sensitive pads built into your existing keyboard and mouse to monitor your brainwaves and transmit them directly to our site. Excited? Welcome to the new age of thoughtART Technology!

Tips For Commission ArtistsHello! I thought of making this small guide, based from my personal experience, to give tips to artists, mostly beginners, to be more successful at selling commissions, since seeing from my previous journal many had difficulty with it. So here are some tips to help boosting your sales.Tips For Commission Artists9 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Have your commission info somewhere visible
Possibly, people won't even know you are taking commissions or if they are open if you don't put your commission info somewhere they can see. You can do this in a journal, that I mostly recommend, since it will be showing into your watcher's inboxes and most of your watchers probably rarely visit your profile page. You could still also use the commission widget, or donation poll to write your info. You can also link to your commission info in your signature or the artist's comment of new drawings you upload.
Keep it simple
Don't add too many unnecessary rules or in

I hope everyone of you have a wonderful holiday time and have a good start in the new year.
I had a nice time with my family and some of my best friends. Tomorrow the "real world" have us again in their greedy claws so I decide to remind myself of really great works of 2013. I started with training basics, before I come back with commercial works.

Paint Tool SAI and TRANSPARENT .PNGVarious Paint Tool SAI users might have noticed it, me included, and it always bugged me a bit.Paint Tool SAI and TRANSPARENT .PNG4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Apparently, SAI doesn't support .PNG transparency. Meaning, when you go and try to save an image supposed to have transparent areas, the picture still gets a white background.
To fix this, I and possibly other people used to save the project as .psd and load it in Photoshop or similar programs to save the file with the wanted transparent area.
Well, a quick search made me figure out that it instead DOES allow it, so I was wondering how.
After some research I figured out I was using version 1.0, which is extremely old and outdated, and it doesn't even feature transparency.
It looks like version
and superior are what allows png to have transparent area.
For some reason it doesn't have ink pen, which the old 1.0 had, but that's not a big deal since most of SAI tools are just the same brush with different settings.
So... I upgraded to

I'm taking a stab at trying to draw people again. While I greatly dislike it, I can't just keep pushing it to the back burner forever. My art class helps as well, our "DRAW FROM REAL LIFE" Nazi teacher is currently making us do figure drawings. I managed to make one model look prettier than she actually was.
Calling the prof. a Nazi is humorous because she's actually a hardcore Jewish person... and because we've been at each other's throats for about 2-3 years now, I am coming up with new ways to attack.
I've started by doing the German Nazi salute whenever I see her and I also try and incorporate a Swastika into whatever I draw for her class.
Alright, I know I dabbled into a touchy subject, with a lot of people still butt hurt over World War 2 and such. I'm not a Nazi, or even part German, and I don't hate the Jews... just my

But I'm kind of curious how it all works, since I was able to contribute to a few artbooks and was wondering how much the printing costs would be and what is necessary needed beside the illustrations or the layout (I already now how it works fr designing the layout etc.) but which company would be good to print (since I live in germany & am scared that the costs would explode). Does anyone know how it works and would like to share his/her knowledge with us/me *^*
