What's Hot (Beta): Trending Artwork on deviantARTArt on the Rise
DeviantART is a bustling and active community, and with the high volume of artwork submitted on any given day, it can be easy to miss something. In fact, it's common for artwork to go viral across the Web or get a spike of traffic days, months, or even years after it was originally submitted.
Our new “What’s Hot” browse mode surfaces artwork that’s receiving a recent increase in exposure, regardless of when it was submitted.
A New Way To Surface Artwork
We often see artwork gain a lot of attention across the Web (after being shared on blogs, social sites, etc.), but by the time this recognition occurs, our search engines don't consider it when displaying recently "Popular" deviations. The new "What’s Hot" mode is built to celebrate these surges of exposure.

SNEAK PEEK: deviantART's NEW Today Page!As I noted in my last journal, there are some big -- and exciting!! -- changes on the way for deviantART. Er, DeviantArt.SNEAK PEEK: deviantART's NEW Today Page!1 year ago in Personal Journal More Like This
The team here at DeviantArt continues to listen to your feedback plus we met with a crew of super-deviants in NYC last month (check out a pic below and got a full, insightful download. Then, we thought long and hard on how to pave a kindred and inspiring direction. As always, you are the center of it all -- and how to connect you with your community.
Ok, getting into it, I want to share a sneak peek on work-in-progress (as in not final!) designs for the new Today page and to hear what everybody thinks.

Improved DMCA Reporting SystemImproved DMCA Reporting System3 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
Hello, deviants! In an effort to keep the community informed and to provide the best possible experience for our members, we wanted to inform you of changes to our reporting system.
DeviantART is dedicated to protecting our artists, and in an effort to be able to more quickly handle complaints by deviants who have had their rights infringed on, we have changed the way we receive complaints from the artist or the copyright holder.
In the past, we took reports by the copyright holder in two different ways: An informal report via the Report Violation tool and a formal complaint via contacting the Help Desk. While both of these methods were effective, they presented many setbacks.
The informal report did not gather all the necessary information for a formal copyright complaint and was prone to misuse by well-meaning deviants who would attempt to report images they did not own the copyright to
Tag Pages: What You Need To KnowThe following journal applies to deviants who have access to our new tags feature that was launched to a small test audience last week. If you received the following Hot Topic in your Message Center, you likely have access to tags. If you didn’t receive the following Hot Topic, you likely don’t have access at this time. Sit tight, as we’ll be rolling out the release to a wider audience soon!Tag Pages: What You Need To Know1 year ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
Tags are our new way to label and create conversations around a topic. Tags can be used everywhere — in Status Updates, Collections, comments, deviation descriptions, or Journals. When clicked, you’ll discover a tag page full of content and activity around the topic.
As someone in the test audience for tags, you’re among the first to see the beginnings of our tag system and we’d appreciate your feedback -- both in terms of what you think so far, and where’d you’d like to see things go in the future.

Connecting you with your watchers.
The Watch Feed creates a sequential stream of activity from your watchlist, including deviations, Journals, Collections, Status Updates, Polls, Forum threads and Critiques. Status Updates let people share quick updates about what they’re working on or what inspires them. Find an awesome deviation? Share it in your Status Update.
As we designed our upcoming Mobile app, we understood the need to build something streamlined and direct to deliver what you want to watch. The Watch Feed was built for smartphones and tablets. While we love the robust tools available in the Message Center — and they’re not going away — the Message Center is not an environment that works well on mobile.

New Username Symbols: Extended ThoughtsTwo weeks ago, we released two new products – deviant and art Mentions and new username symbols. Gratefully, and as we'd hoped, many deviants are embracing these changes in exactly the ways we'd anticipated, and the ways we ourselves did over the past several months of testing. While some deviants embraced the changes, it's fair to say that others have felt surprise, curiosity, and maybe even shock. These feelings are totally normal, but for the large part, there's a hope present. A positive outlook. The first steps in a new era that makes the way for our goals in the future, and, at the same time, removes clutter and confusion that new deviants often experience.New Username Symbols: Extended Thoughts2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Undiscovered (Beta): Unearthing Quality ArtArt Under The RadarUndiscovered (Beta): Unearthing Quality Art2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
Each day, hundreds of thousands of pieces of art are submitted to deviantART. As more and more artists join, create, and share their work, it becomes easy for high quality art to miss its chance to stand out and be seen.
Our new browse mode, Undiscovered, aims to bring new, high quality artwork to the foreground.
Finding Hidden Gems
Undiscovered focuses on recently submitted artwork that has not yet drawn attention or recognition at the levels of Popular or What's Hot browse modes. Using an algorithm that identifies patterns in community behavior when curating content, Undiscovered generates a browsing experience that draws attention to creative art and talented artists that may not receive the same level of attention from other browse modes.
Please keep in mind that the algorithm that powers Undiscovered is still new and we may make changes as it grows in use.

Spirit Day 2012"Ultimately, I want Spirit Day to make just one person feel little bit better about his or herself, to feel safe enough in their own skin and to be proud of who they are" - Brittany McMillanSpirit Day 20123 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
In memory of the young LGBT people who lost their lives to suicide, Brittany encouraged her friends to wear purple on a day in October -- a day that came to be known as Spirit Day. Since then, GLAAD has helped turn Spirit Day into a global event that inspires millions of individuals, celebrities, TV personalities, media outlets, companies and schools to wear purple in a stand against bullying.
While Spirit Day does focus on the LGBT community, I believe that it's anti-bullying message is relevant to every community. It only get's better, if we take the pledge to make it so.
Practice compassion and understanding, and treat others how you would like to be treated and we can make a difference.

PE DDs: When It's Not Always PositiveWhen DDs Go AwryPE DDs: When It's Not Always Positive3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Daily Deviations, or “DDs,” are frequently held in very high esteem on deviantART. After all, what artist does not want his or her work displayed for more than 20 million viewers to see and admire? The benefits of receiving a DD feature include increased exposure for your work and a day in the spotlight for you as an artist. Many people therefore view DDs as badges of honor, awards that make them proud and validate the time they spend in our community.
Be careful what you wish for!
Don’t get us wrong-- DDs are wonderful for the purposes listed above. But, they can also bring a lot of drama upon the artist, especially if they are controversial.
Let’s talk about some of the sources of this drama.
Some people feel that people who post art-- and especially those whose art is worthy of a Daily Deviation-- should have thick enough skin to accept criticism as well as praise. They argue that criticism is part

What kind of art do you prefer and why?
I think I have a particular affinity for photography. I love shots of nature especially. Show me a photo of an open field and a barn and I melt. Though I must say, whenever I'm browsing through the Daily Deviations, I'm generally amazed by everything, regardless of the medium.
What is your favorite thing about the COMMUNITY on deviantART?
The community IS my favorite thing about deviantART. I don't think I could just pick one thing about it. I love how supportive it is. There really is nothing like it.
What’s your greatest memory from your time as a staff member?
There's so many! One of my favorites
