EA refuses to waver from their stance that the always-online DRM for SimCity that's caused so many problems is absolutely necessary to the functioning of the game. However, a modder by the name of UKAzzer has proved that EA is basically full of shit. UKAzzer discovered that the code which checks for a connection every 20 minutes could be changed to 0, resulting in no checks at all. The game still plays and functions perfectly offline, with only minor hiccups.
You can view his video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?featurelayer_embedded&v=Bmce9oIxJag
On a side note, EA's CEO John Riccitiello has resigned. I wonder if the SimCity debacle is in any way related...?

CGI Zelda Movie Shut Down... 6 Years Ago
Imagi Animation Studios, the company responsible for the CGI Astro Boy and TMNT movies, made a 1 minute test reel to show to Nintendo trying to pitch for a Legend of Zelda movie. The pitch made in 2007 was ultimately turned down by Nintendo, likely due to Nintendo being extraordinarily squeamish about letting an American animation company handle one of their properties after the abysmal failure of the live action Super Mario Bros movie. And hopes that this project would ever be looked at again were rendered null and void when the american branch of the animation company was shut down back in 2010.
But the good news for everyone is that you can see this

Nerd Girls: Nothing to Prove
So this music video has been circulating the web recently about the whole stupid "nerd girls" problem and I think it's pretty cool. Some of the more famous people in the video include Kelly Sue Deconnick, Amy Berg, John Scalzi, Josh A. Cagan, Adam Savage, Paul & Storm, Wil Wheaton, and Marian Call.

The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart. The Echo chamber dilemma7 months ago in Personal More Like This
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.
And this is becoming a growing problem, I think, because n

The latest details for the Xbox One show that pretty much every aspect of gaming culture that we hate has been incorporated into it. Needing to check in every 24 hours to make sure you've legally bought a game? Check. Not able to bring games over to a friend's house unless your friend ALSO buys the game? Check. Forcing game stores to sign an agreement to pay Microsoft a large percentage of the used sale fee? Check. More motion controls? Check. Inability to let independent-developers make games on their system? Check. Not backwards compatible? Check. Stronger emphasis on watching TV and movies than playing games? Check. Seriously, this is like a check list of all the worse possible things to include in a gaming console.

Honestly didn't see that one coming, but I am happy nonetheless. While the first game wasn't very remarkable, I just love the art style and the stark contrast the game presents compared to every other post-apocalyptic-near-future-world that exists. Chock me up to interested.
Didn't see this one coming either. Quite surprised, but personally don't care. I've never really paid attention to fighting games much, yes even Super Smash Bros. I have a feeling this will be one of those games that we think will be amazing, but the newest generation of kids won't understand why they should care (kinda like DuckTales).
Sidenote: Quite disappointed with the way they handled the demonstration by bringing out a woman to play multiplayer with and "destroying" her while simultaneously saying shit like "just give up... it will be over soon." Scripted or not, that scene was appalling.

People seem to love to jump to conclusions. If there's one thing I want people who visit my page or read my comics to understand, it's this: If I poke fun at something, that does not automatically mean that I HATE it.
I'm restating that now because it came up again recently in the "Nintentroll" comic. People seemed to think that because the comic is making fun of certain pokemon that means I am decrying the whole series or somehow personally insulting those who actually do enjoy the specific examples I used. Let me reassure you, I am not.
I guess I just want people to lighten up and not always be in such a defensive mode all the time. Everyone has different likes and dislikes and if I don't like something or happen to poke fun at something you do, that does not mean I am personally attacking you and there's no reason to be so knee-jerk defensive about it. This goes for everything I do beyond the "Nintentroll" comic as well. If I poke fun at a movie, or video game, or spe

Perceived Rivalry Hatred
Basically it works like this: You say you dislike something and immediately get attacked by people who either defend the thing you said you disliked, or accuse you of being a supporter of it's supposed rival (whether this has any basis in reality or not). It also works on things you like, things you're indifferent to, or anything really. EVERYTHING has a supposed default rival. Movies, TV, Video Games, Ideologies, Words, Phrases, etc. Everything.

E3 Thoughts Day 3Wii Fit TrainerE3 Thoughts Day 36 months ago in Personal More Like This
You know, I was on the fence about the new Smash Bros game. Even with Mega Man I didn't really see anything remarkable about the game to peak my interest. But then when Nintendo unveiled the Wii Fit personal trainer as a playable character? F**k Yeah! Bludgeon your opponents to death with YOGA moves? That's the sort of nonsensical whimsy that I think was sorely lacking from this version of franchise. Count me in!
Still not sure how the 3DS and Wii U version are going to interact with each other, if at all. Iwata has said that the 3DS will have different stages, so that suggests that they aren't compatible. But then, if they're not compatible, why put out 2 games at once? Frankly, I like the idea of being able to play against Wii U opponents from the comfort of my 3DS. That would be really cool, but I don't know if that's a thing they're looking to do or not. Hmm..
PS: Maybe it's just me, but I found it rather hilarious how all the characters were practicing Yoga
Being Critical =/= HateLooks like I need to remind people about this again, as yesterday I got several comments in a row from people who assumed that me being critical about something automatically translated into me outright hating it. I don't know how to stress this enough but that's not the case... You can be critical of stuff you like and not hate it. I don't know why our culture tries so hard to force everything into such black and white terms but come on guys, really... being critical and smart about what you love doesn't mean you hate it.Being Critical =/= Hate4 months ago in Personal More Like This
Take the Dragon's Crown comic, for example, in which I was critical of the Sorceress's design. From that someone hypothesized that I must HATE the game, and that's farthest from the truth. I know full well that Vanillaware is an amazing studio and they do fantastic work. One of my favorite games of theirs is Muramasa the Demon Blade. Dragon's Crown has scored really highly and it's most definitely worth your money to buy/download it if you can. BUT... I can still be

Parody vs Pastiche and other Humorous ExamplesJust for fun I thought I'd do a rundown of the most common forms of humor, their definitions, and examples. An imitative work created to mock, comment on or trivialize an original work, its subject, author, style, or some other target, by means of satiric or ironic imitation.
Example: The movie "Airplane" is a parody of 1970's disaster movies. Many of Weird Al's music videos are parodies of other more famous music videos.
A work of visual art, literature, or music that imitates the style or character of the work of one or more other artists. Unlike parody, pastiche celebrates, rather than mocks, the work it imitates.
Example: The movie "Super 8" is a pastiche of 1980's adventure films, specifically imitating the style of Stephen Spielberg's early career,
'Why Are We Even Talking About This?'I get that phrase a lot, that and "over react much?" whenever I bring up ANY issue, be it from a video game, politics, or whatever. You'll be unsurprised to learn that I don't agree with that wisdom. In my books, if you don't do anything, nothing is going to happen. If there's an injustice in the world somewhere and you stay silent, that injustice isn't going to fix itself. It will just keep happening. That, my friends, is complacency.
Then of course there are those people who don't believe that the world will ever change, therefor there's no reason to try, and actively try to stop anyone who dares to stand up for something. I can't begin to describe how annoying that mindset is to me. It's almost sadistic in it's very nature, by actively trying to stop people from making the world a better place by being dismissi
Thoughts on the 'Trading Places' Pin-UpsFor the past few days I've been uploading a series of "pin-ups" of famous cartoon characters who've exchanged each other's outfits. I originally made these about 6 months ago, so they are a little outdated in comparison to how I work now.Thoughts on the 'Trading Places' Pin-Ups7 months ago in Personal More Like This
These weren't originally meant to be seen by the public. At the time I was still very sick and had stopped making comics and art all together. This was sort of a therapeutic way to try and get me back into drawing again. And even though they're "pin-ups," aside from a little creative licensing here or there I never tried to make any of them look slutty or give them M.C. Escher spines.
I must admit that looking back on this now from the vantage point of hindsight there are a few things I would've changed. I use more photo references now for hands and feet, so I probably would've spent more time making sure those looked better. I'd try to get the proportions of the character's bodies a little more accurate as well (Velma is too skinny), and try to match
Sexy VS SexistIt seems that the gaming world is finally waking up to the fact that women DO actually play video games. They (the gaming industry) are not being mature about it, but the fact that a female perspective and voice is being heard more and more is a very good thing in my books.Sexy VS Sexist8 months ago in Personal More Like This
The latest controversy to break out in the video game world has been over niche gaming studio Vanillaware's recent title "Dragon's Crown," and the absurdly sexualized female character of "The Sorceress" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQKCgal1vdw
Some people are, naturally, offended that such a ludicrous character design with no sense of reality or function even exists, while the other side keeps saying "why are we even talking about this?" Both sides are being vocal, but they also seem to be talking past one another. One side seems to want to rid gaming entirely of sexy character designs, while the other seems to think this is some sort of "feminist agenda" and are being sexist in response because they fear having a

Nintendo announced recently that Luigi will be getting quite a bit of due attention this year, declaring 2013 to be "the year of Luigi." First he'll be staring in the Luigi's Mansion sequel for the 3DS, then he will be a big component of the next Mario and Luigi RPG on the 3DS. In the RPG game, Mario will enter Luigi's dreams where Luigi can be as awesome, if not better than, his overshadowing brother. Poking and prodding Luigi's face on the touch screen will also alter the dream world, allowing Mario to proceed through obstacles. And if that wasn't enough, there is a new DLC package planned for New Super Mario Bros U which basically adds an entire game's worth of new levels exclusively to be played by Luigi. Pretty solid stuff, Nintendo. Now say that 2014 is the year of the Peach!

The timing of my post about the nerdfighter minecraft server could've been better. Right before I posted about it, Hank Green made a video and showcased it briefly which resulted in a HUGE influx of new players. To compensate for the overload, the serves have been moved and updated to now host 1000 members at once!... with the net result of having glitches (like server lags and accidental bans) run rampant, followed by the crash of the forums. Yikes...!
To make matters worse, the 1.6 Horse Update is scheduled to come out this week, and the nerdcrafteria servers can't update until the plugins they use are updated as well. So that likely will cause a lot of connection issues and server problems as well.
I'd like to reassure everyone that this isn't normal behavior for the server. They are working on getting the forums back up and running and hopefully the new server will be able to handle the plethora of users better now. It's just gonna take a few days t
Microsoft Employees Disrupt Wii U Best Buy EventsRemember how Nintendo was showcasing some of their E3 games at participating Best Buy stores around the country? Well, apparently Microsoft employees have been hired to go to these events and preach about the Xbox One and make comments like "why would you buy a outdated Wii U when the Xbox One is right around the corner?"Microsoft Employees Disrupt Wii U Best Buy Events6 months ago in Personal More Like This
However, the employees aren't getting what they hoped for. Most customers just start bashing the Xbox One in response. Seriously, Microsoft, the people attending these Best Buy Wii U events are people who are intimately familiar with the crap you pulled at E3. They ain't takin' your shit.
At first I thought this might just be a case of one really loyal Microsoft employee taking matters into his own hands (especially since the original source was /v/), but reports have come in from numerous Best Buy's around the country that indicate many Microsoft employees have ambushed the demo lines trying to persuade people to switch to the Xbox One.

The PS4 didn't really give me anything to look forward to.
XboxZero is the most boring console to date.
And all 3 of them are too f***ing expensive.
I never thought it would be possible, but I am so thoroughly uninterested in this console generation. Not even my rabid Nintendo fanboyism can get me through this apathy.
PS4I was wrong and Sony pulled a Nintendo to announce the PS4 way earlier than I anticipated. Of course they will have more details at E3, and they didn't reveal too much about the system, but the fact that they announced it this early was definitely a surprise to me.PS410 months ago in Personal More Like This
They revealed a number of interesting features about the system which, I must admit, are pretty damn amazing. I love the concept of being able to stream your PS4 games on your VITA from anywhere. That's a system selling concept right there, and it kinda beats Nintendo at the whole "play away from the TV with the Wii U pad" idea. (psst! Nintendo! Make an app for the 3DS that streams Wii U games to the console! hurry!)
I also really like the idea of being able to record your gameplay and stream it to people while you're still playing it. I can see that becoming a really big thing for gamers, especially on YouTube where "let's plays" are really popular.
The system also won't block used games, like everyone was fearing it might,

What's really frustrating about the government shutdown is that BOTH SIDES want to reopen the government. Republican and Democrats alike want the government to continue to operate. However thanks to a handful of Republican leaders in Congress, things have been set up to basically STOP our government for their political gain.
Basically they've silently changed the way congress works to place the entire power of the shutdown in the hands of the GOP.
I do not think that your average republican is inherently evil or a bad person. There are actually a lot of laws that both Republican and Democrats agree on. But more and more I'm seeing the Republican PARTY start to exercise their ideas independently of their demographic. I mean, the whole point of the government shutdown (according to the Republican Party) was to stop Obamacare. But Obamacare still went into effect because it wasn't part of the budget plan that was actually under discus

A lot of what happens during E3 are smoke and mirrors to make everything appear better than they actually are. How many of you remember the vertical slice of Aliens: Colonial Marines that demo'd gorgeously but then ended up looking so crappy when it was finally released, that people sued them? Well... Microsoft's bad press just continues to roll in. Recently photos have emerged of a technician installing the XBOne stations and clear as day they were running on Windows 7 machines (Yup. Microsoft doesn't even trust their own Windows 8 to run their demos).
There's a link below with more detailed tech-heavy specs and data for those of you more interested in this news. And it should be noted that most E3 demos even from Sony and Nintendo were running off of computers. But the problem arises when Microsoft heads expressly say they're using "comparable" tech to demo, and that's been proven to be entirely false. If anything
Proving your Geek CreedNerds all share a unified experience of being socially ostracized from the rest of other so-called "normal" societal groups. The reasons may vary (not being good at sports, liking a certain sci-fi/fantasy TV show, etc), but the fact that we all were picked upon and marginalized during our most formable years is a major part of the nerd/geek identity. But in recent years nerd culture stopped being it's own niche thing, and has started to seep into mainstream culture. Making nerd culture more accessible has naturally brought with it a new group of people and fans into our sphere... and not everyone is happy about this development.Proving your Geek Creed7 months ago in Personal More Like This
Personally I think it's great that nerd culture has become so widely accepted lately. I can freely have a discussion about my favorite DC or Marvel superheros in public without getting looks of disgust or incredulity because EVERYONE loves Batman and The Avengers. And if I make an obscure joke about Doctor Who, there's a LOT of people who will get it now. But l
