Thoughts on the 'Trading Places' Pin-UpsFor the past few days I've been uploading a series of "pin-ups" of famous cartoon characters who've exchanged each other's outfits. I originally made these about 6 months ago, so they are a little outdated in comparison to how I work now.Thoughts on the 'Trading Places' Pin-Ups7 months ago in Personal More Like This
These weren't originally meant to be seen by the public. At the time I was still very sick and had stopped making comics and art all together. This was sort of a therapeutic way to try and get me back into drawing again. And even though they're "pin-ups," aside from a little creative licensing here or there I never tried to make any of them look slutty or give them M.C. Escher spines.
I must admit that looking back on this now from the vantage point of hindsight there are a few things I would've changed. I use more photo references now for hands and feet, so I probably would've spent more time making sure those looked better. I'd try to get the proportions of the character's bodies a little more accurate as well (Velma is too skinny), and try to match

Nintendo announced recently that Luigi will be getting quite a bit of due attention this year, declaring 2013 to be "the year of Luigi." First he'll be staring in the Luigi's Mansion sequel for the 3DS, then he will be a big component of the next Mario and Luigi RPG on the 3DS. In the RPG game, Mario will enter Luigi's dreams where Luigi can be as awesome, if not better than, his overshadowing brother. Poking and prodding Luigi's face on the touch screen will also alter the dream world, allowing Mario to proceed through obstacles. And if that wasn't enough, there is a new DLC package planned for New Super Mario Bros U which basically adds an entire game's worth of new levels exclusively to be played by Luigi. Pretty solid stuff, Nintendo. Now say that 2014 is the year of the Peach!

CGI Zelda Movie Shut Down... 6 Years Ago
Imagi Animation Studios, the company responsible for the CGI Astro Boy and TMNT movies, made a 1 minute test reel to show to Nintendo trying to pitch for a Legend of Zelda movie. The pitch made in 2007 was ultimately turned down by Nintendo, likely due to Nintendo being extraordinarily squeamish about letting an American animation company handle one of their properties after the abysmal failure of the live action Super Mario Bros movie. And hopes that this project would ever be looked at again were rendered null and void when the american branch of the animation company was shut down back in 2010.
But the good news for everyone is that you can see this

The trailer to "Equestria Girls" (the humanized MLP spinoff film) finally was released today. Aaaannnd everyone's freaking out. Again.
You know, it actually looks pretty decent. Bronies... please understand: I know you're a major unexpected demographic for the show. I know you enjoy seeing shout-out's become canon within the show, and appreciate how the creators do little things here and there for you. But... the show isn't made for you. This is not Cartoon Network and the target demographic isn't 25 year olds in college. You're a nice addition to the target demographic of little girls, but you are not the driving force behind MLP.
I don't want this to sound mean, but it needs to be said. This is where it becomes very important to understand the fine line between being a fan of the show and thinking that because you've invested so much energy into the show that you're entitled to things.
I'm sure the movie won't be as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It honest
My ApologiesHello all,My Apologies7 months ago in Personal More Like This
Let me begin by first apologizing to those of you who have left me notes, comments, or questions over the past few weeks. I have been absent for DA for an extended period of time due to real life priorities, and the stress doesn't look as though it is about to relent. While I will try to get back on top of my deviations and replies here, it will be slow-going and I can't promise to be around regularly.
As well as rushing to meet deadlines for my animation, I have also been organizing and setting up the LASALLE Show with my classmates, and as class representative for 2D animation I have been required to make a daily appearance at my college. The LASALLE Show doubles as a showcase to display the best works amongst the different faculties of the college, as well as being a graduation show for those of us in the 3rd year, which I am. Honour Amongst Thieves has received a special display right at the entrance to the animation gallery, and I was occupied for the bett

The latest details for the Xbox One show that pretty much every aspect of gaming culture that we hate has been incorporated into it. Needing to check in every 24 hours to make sure you've legally bought a game? Check. Not able to bring games over to a friend's house unless your friend ALSO buys the game? Check. Forcing game stores to sign an agreement to pay Microsoft a large percentage of the used sale fee? Check. More motion controls? Check. Inability to let independent-developers make games on their system? Check. Not backwards compatible? Check. Stronger emphasis on watching TV and movies than playing games? Check. Seriously, this is like a check list of all the worse possible things to include in a gaming console.
By that account, the PS4 is doing
Binary HatredRemember when I was posting some journals about artist taboos and I had a couple more to talk about? Here's one of them, though it doesn't just relate to artists it's just kinda an all around taboo I wish would end.Binary Hatred4 months ago in Personal More Like This
Perceived Rivalry Hatred
Basically it works like this: You say you dislike something and immediately get attacked by people who either defend the thing you said you disliked, or accuse you of being a supporter of it's supposed rival (whether this has any basis in reality or not). It also works on things you like, things you're indifferent to, or anything really. EVERYTHING has a supposed default rival. Movies, TV, Video Games, Ideologies, Words, Phrases, etc. Everything.
Say you're an atheist? Automatically means you hate all Christians.
Say you like the X-Box 360? Automatically means you hate Sony.
Say you like the PS3? Automatically means you hate Microsoft.
You liked a Marvel movie? Guys you hate the DC stuff.
You like Chocolate Ice Creme? Fuck you and your vanilla bias!

The timing of my post about the nerdfighter minecraft server could've been better. Right before I posted about it, Hank Green made a video and showcased it briefly which resulted in a HUGE influx of new players. To compensate for the overload, the serves have been moved and updated to now host 1000 members at once!... with the net result of having glitches (like server lags and accidental bans) run rampant, followed by the crash of the forums. Yikes...!
To make matters worse, the 1.6 Horse Update is scheduled to come out this week, and the nerdcrafteria servers can't update until the plugins they use are updated as well. So that likely will cause a lot of connection issues and server problems as well.
I'd like to reassure everyone that this isn't normal behavior for the server. They are working on getting the forums back up and running and hopefully the new server will be able to handle the plethora of users better now. It's just gonna take a few days t

The PS4 didn't really give me anything to look forward to.
XboxZero is the most boring console to date.
And all 3 of them are too f***ing expensive.

Honestly didn't see that one coming, but I am happy nonetheless. While the first game wasn't very remarkable, I just love the art style and the stark contrast the game presents compared to every other post-apocalyptic-near-future-world that exists. Chock me up to interested.
Didn't see this one coming either. Quite surprised, but personally don't care. I've never really paid attention to fighting games much, yes even Super Smash Bros. I have a feeling this will be one of those games that we think will be amazing, but the newest generation of kids won't understand why they should care (kinda like DuckTales).
Sidenote: Quite disappointed with the way they handled the demonstration by bringing out a woman to play multiplayer with and "destroying" her while simultaneously saying shit like "just give up... it will be over soon." Scripted or not, that scene was appalling.

I'm... actually quite disappointed by this as
PS4I was wrong and Sony pulled a Nintendo to announce the PS4 way earlier than I anticipated. Of course they will have more details at E3, and they didn't reveal too much about the system, but the fact that they announced it this early was definitely a surprise to me.PS410 months ago in Personal More Like This
They revealed a number of interesting features about the system which, I must admit, are pretty damn amazing. I love the concept of being able to stream your PS4 games on your VITA from anywhere. That's a system selling concept right there, and it kinda beats Nintendo at the whole "play away from the TV with the Wii U pad" idea. (psst! Nintendo! Make an app for the 3DS that streams Wii U games to the console! hurry!)
I also really like the idea of being able to record your gameplay and stream it to people while you're still playing it. I can see that becoming a really big thing for gamers, especially on YouTube where "let's plays" are really popular.
The system also won't block used games, like everyone was fearing it might,
The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart. The Echo chamber dilemma7 months ago in Personal More Like This
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.
And this is becoming a growing problem, I think, because n
Apple RantI generally like Apple products. I was a long time hater of all things MAC back when I used Windows and knew nothing else, but since getting my own MAC I've come to really appreciate them. I've even drawn parodies of the MAC vs PC war, which unfortunately had the effect of pissing off people who still think it's a war that actually means anything (Seriously, if you genuinely get angry or worked up over the finer points of the Mac vs PC debate... grow up. That's like fighting the Nintendo vs Sega debate unironically 20 years after the fact).Apple Rant10 months ago in Personal More Like This
But while I love my computer and my Apple products... they've been doing a lot of stuff to piss me off lately... Allow me to explain my frustrations.
I generally use my iPhone 4S to watch movies. I like having playlists made up of movies so I can have stuff running in the background when I'm working. I also have a cable that connects my iPhone to my TV, allowing me to play those movies up on the big screen. This is useful at conventions because I ca
Socially AwkwardI like the internet, but I acknowledge that it's not perfect. The ability for everyone to be the invisible man allows for a lot of injustice, bullying, harassment, and stalking to take place. This is slowly starting to change, however, thanks to every website gradually forcing people to link to their facebook (or other social media equivalent) accounts. No one wants to lose their personal social outlets as a result of the stuff they were doing elsewhere on the web, if you know what I mean. But... with all good things there are some bad things.Socially Awkward6 months ago in Personal More Like This
I don't know if it's just me, but I'm getting really creeped out how by how much everything is getting connected these days. Nearly every website asks me to post about stuff on facebook or twitter or reddit or whatever. Many websites don't even have personal accounts anymore and just have you link your social media accounts instead. And all of them want to update everyone on your every move 24/7.
And that's what's bothering me. I don't want every

I've been wanting to try and set up a Minecraft series of videos with other Fresh Epic members like Dayvi and Humon, but setting it all up has proved to be a little more complicated and time consuming than I thought... so I just started recording my own experiences. I'm not very good at PVP, but I enjoyed making the video and hope to make more.
If you've got some suggestions on what either I or other Fresh Epics artists could do/play in Minecraft or whatever, leave them below. Also, thumb up and like the video if you enjoyed it.
Harley Quinn Part 2There's been a LOT of talk about this contest. http://www.dccomics.com/node/305151 Most of it negative, some of it positive, and some of it trying VERY hard to justify it. But outside that there's still a lot of debate going on and I wanted to touch upon it. First up, there were a lot of people trying to justify "why" she was committing suicide. A lot of these people suggested things like "she's a crazy character and she's unstable so of course she would do something like this" or "she'd probably do this if the joker left her." And while those people DO have a point... all of it is rendered null and void when the creators of the contest come right out and say that the point of these attempted suicides was a tongue-in-cheek gag at the awful shit they were gonna put Harley through. As in, she sees what they're gonna write a

Nerd Girls: Nothing to Prove
So this music video has been circulating the web recently about the whole stupid "nerd girls" problem and I think it's pretty cool. Some of the more famous people in the video include Kelly Sue Deconnick, Amy Berg, John Scalzi, Josh A. Cagan, Adam Savage, Paul & Storm, Wil Wheaton, and Marian Call.

Nintendo STEALS Money!Since this has been going around lately, I should probably give my two cents. Basically what it amounts to is that Nintendo has filed Content ID info of their games with YouTube. What this means is that if you upload gameplay video of a Nintendo game, YouTube will automatically monetize that video, put ads on it, a link to where to buy the game, and take the money generated from that video and give it directly to Nintendo. People who do "let's play" videos are, naturally, pissed off because they want to be earning money off their videos, so they're calling Nintendo "thieves" for doing this.Nintendo STEALS Money!7 months ago in Personal More Like This
I can see both sides to the story. I can see Nintendo as a corporation wanting to exercise control over their properties. On the other hand, "let's play" videos can often help new gamers find games they otherwise wouldn't have tried.
But here's the thing: Nintendo isn't the first company do this. Both Microsoft and Ubisoft do it already. YouTube has also had a long history of having music videos and
Why Can't Warner Bros Get Their Act Together?Over the weekend at SDCC, Warner Bros announced that the new Man of Steel sequel will also feature Batman. The team-up movie will be followed by a Flash movie and then a Justice League Avenger's style team-up movie. This has a lot of people scratching their heads and wondering what exactly is wrong with DC and Warner Bros respectively. Why Flash and not Wonder Woman? Why add Batman when reports have been told that Christian Bale doesn't want to return and we'll likely get a completely new Batman? Why do a team-up so soon after the first Man of Steel movie instead of fleshing out Superman's modernized world better? Why Can't Warner Bros Get Their Act Together?5 months ago in Personal More Like This
Well... to put it bluntly I don't think Warner Bros really gives a shit about comic book themed movies and they're only going through these motions because they feel like they HAVE to rather than because they WANT to. Just take a look at their track record.

Say what you will about Anita Sarkeesian, you gotta admit that people do take note of what she says for good or ill. In this piece of news, it's for the good.
As you might already know, in her latest video she outlined a simple "damsel frees herself" video game. Nothing too spectacular but it showcased how one can subvert the typical trope and make a strong female character out of it. While many were quick to criticize her for not making the game herself (given her kickstarter success), others took a more direct approach and actually made a game in 2 weeks.
The game is called "Sorry Mario Bros," and the plot is that Princess Peach decides to rescues herself by leaving Bowser's castle in world 8-4. You progress right to left through familiar, but slightly altered, original Mario Bros. worlds working your way backwards towards world 1-1. Along the way you can take detours and use Peach's float ability to reach hidden areas and collect "princess coins."
Parody vs Pastiche and other Humorous ExamplesJust for fun I thought I'd do a rundown of the most common forms of humor, their definitions, and examples. This is not a complete list by any means, but they are a list of many forms of humor and literature discourse which often get confused of mixed up.Parody vs Pastiche and other Humorous Examples2 months ago in Personal More Like This
An imitative work created to mock, comment on or trivialize an original work, its subject, author, style, or some other target, by means of satiric or ironic imitation.
Example: The movie "Airplane" is a parody of 1970's disaster movies. Many of Weird Al's music videos are parodies of other more famous music videos.
A work of visual art, literature, or music that imitates the style or character of the work of one or more other artists. Unlike parody, pastiche celebrates, rather than mocks, the work it imitates.
Example: The movie "Super 8" is a pastiche of 1980's adventure films, specifically imitating the style of Stephen Spielberg's early career,
Being Critical =/= HateLooks like I need to remind people about this again, as yesterday I got several comments in a row from people who assumed that me being critical about something automatically translated into me outright hating it. I don't know how to stress this enough but that's not the case... You can be critical of stuff you like and not hate it. I don't know why our culture tries so hard to force everything into such black and white terms but come on guys, really... being critical and smart about what you love doesn't mean you hate it.Being Critical =/= Hate4 months ago in Personal More Like This
Take the Dragon's Crown comic, for example, in which I was critical of the Sorceress's design. From that someone hypothesized that I must HATE the game, and that's farthest from the truth. I know full well that Vanillaware is an amazing studio and they do fantastic work. One of my favorite games of theirs is Muramasa the Demon Blade. Dragon's Crown has scored really highly and it's most definitely worth your money to buy/download it if you can. BUT... I can still be

I'll be honest. I wasn't expecting the backlash to be so violent. But I guess I should expect this sort of thing whenever it comes to video games. At any rate, a lot of stuff is being thrown around haphazardly and I wanted to address some of the main complaints/defenses about my criticism of Quiet's design.
"She's got camo skin! She's dressed this way for a reason!"
You know, you can come up with any number of reasons for a character to be scantly clad. But at the end of the day it's still a scantly clad conventionally attractive female character. Not to put to fine a point on it but having Mystique walk around naked because her skin changes color doesn't stop her from being a source of obvious pandering T&A. So I'm sorry, but that whole "you'll be ashamed for slut-shaming her" excuse doesn't hold water with me, especially after Kojima outright said that her design was to sell
