Self-Harm Awareness 2013 Crafty EditionToday, March 1st is Self-Harm Awareness Day, but I think it deserves more than a day. I won't say much about it because other people have already published wonderful articles about it, I recommend that you read Nichrysalis's Fears vs Dreams and Beccalicious' Recovery, both contain a lot of wonderful information and share touching experiences.
What I can tell you is this: self-harm is a problem that is often not recognized. It takes many forms, forms that are not recognized even by the person committing it. Self-harm is always a problem, even if you think you have it under control or that it's not serious, it is. If you are currently committing any form of self-harm, or if you suspect anyone else is, reach out for help. Both articles contain links and resources to guide you, and I'm here to talk :iconheartorangeplz:.

The history of the birthday cakeOrigin of the birthday cakeThe history of the birthday cake1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
In most parts of the world a birthday is just not a birthday without a cake. I thought it would be interesting to learn how this tradition started and how it transformed from one culture to the other.
Cake, the word
The word Cake goes back to the 13th century. The word is of Viking origin, from the Old Norse "kaka". It is described as a baked flour confection sweetened with sugar or honey; it is mixed with eggs and often includes milk and fat.
The cake evolution
Cakes were very different from what we know today, in ancient Greece they started off as bread-like, sweetened with honey.
In the middle-ages, Germany used a sweetened bread-dough in the shape of baby Jesus to commemorate his birthday. It was later that the Birthday Cake truly emerged as a celebration item

Gaining Exposure To ArtGaining Exposure For Your Own Art:Gaining Exposure To Art3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Being active on the site is probably the best and most effective way to get yourself and your art seen. Leaving thoughtful comments on others art will often result in them coming to your page to find out more about you and see your art. Being involved and making friends will promt people to focus on you and your art giving you a bit more exposure. Leaving critiques, helping to moderate groups, posting in the forums, or simply chatting it up in the chatrooms. These can all be beneficial in getting you more exposure. Below I'd like to outline some of the wonderful ways, I believe, you can gain extra exposure to your art.
Joining groups which are relevant to your interests and the art which you make can be very helpful in getting your art out there and seen by like minded individuals. The introduction of groups by dA has made it very e
Attention all artisans: stop undercharging! As a member of the Artisan Craft community here at DeviantART, I looove to browse around the AC galleries and see what other deviants are up to, what things are trending, and look for up and coming artists to feature in the future. But sadly there's one trend I've been noticing that is very, very bad.Attention all artisans: stop undercharging!3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Undercharging your work!
Let's start off with the most important thing. Now I know some cheap buyers love these low prices, but let's be honest cheap buyers-- you're not long term supporters. People who want your work for super cheap are people who will haggle or snag a deal and run. There is nothing wrong with having sales, getting rid of old charms for cheap, or even doing discounts for special occasions but you can't cater to the cheapskates! xD You want people who appreciate handmade items for what they are. And that's a unique, quality piece.
If someone wants to buy all your hard work for just $5, perhaps you could redirect them to Forever21 to get some mass produced jewelry i
Pro-Animal CraftsToday I felt like making a feature with crafts that donate to animal charities, that search to raise animal welfare awareness and other noble causes. Some of these pieces are for sell and the profits will be donated to shelters and animal charities, so if you find anything interesting don't hesitate to buy it, it's for a good cause. I hope you'll enjoy it!Pro-Animal Crafts1 year ago in Art Features More Like This

During the month of November each year, Movember asks men across the world to grow a moustache (or Mo') with the aim of raising vital funds and awareness for men’s health issues. Mo Bros are helping to change the face of men’s health by effectively becoming walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by promoting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health. Together, we are truly changing the face of men’s health.

Who Cares About the Literature Community?A few days ago we had a chat to discuss community issues and solutions (see the original journal for details). Huge thanks to everyone who came and raised awesome points!Who Cares About the Literature Community?2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
It took 45 minutes for the volume of talk to max out Sta.sh Writer's character limit and this chat went for two more hours, so I'm just going to summarize the key discussion points, starting with big actionables for CRLiterature and for the community.
I've put the chat stuff lower down as it's denser: the outside bullet is the issue, and the inside bullet is possible solutions (not necessarily in order, each point is really a response to the original issue). There is a lot to think about in there, but feel free to pick and choose the issues you care most about.
Sorry for leaving a lot of stuff out, but I hope you guys are too busy figuring out how best to act on what we discussed to pay too much attention
Back to School:icontechgnotic:Back to School3 years ago in Personal More Like This
They are the three words that roil the senses like no others, that stir an inner emotional stew of mixed emotions that inscribes us, for both good and bad, for a lifetime. It's the inevitable arrival of late summer and the call to the classrooms that makes us tremulously anticipate the new anxieties and challenges that are about to be sprung upon us – but also the sweet rewards of ascending to new levels in pursuit of a life goal. For visual artists on their personal missions to achieving their own unique visions of success, in art and life, it is once again time to seek out the guiding wisdom of the old masters as well as the new kids with all the new tricks of the trade.

I know that many deviants have had a rough past year. I know I have. For some, it was the economy, for some changes in their families and loved ones, and I know for some it has even been on deviantART. We have all had struggles, but this time of year, whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or not, is as good a time as any to thank people for what we DO have.
In this world of little, we all have something we hold dear to our hearts. Now is the time to say thanks.
So, what I would like to invite everyone to do is in the next 48 hours (Today + Thanksgiving), fave this journal to show your support, then comment with 4 things you are thankful for:
1 thing on deviantART you are thankful for
1 thing with your family, loved ones, friends, etc. you are thankful for
1 thing in your life you are thankful for
1 piece of art you, or a fellow deviant created that you are th
Gallery Makeover ProjectHello everyoneGallery Makeover Project2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Recently my team and I worked tirelessly on a project to help improve the gallery descriptions and thumbnail examples. While that project was indeed tedious with almost 4,000 categories in our system, it was also educational. What I learned from sorting through thousands and thousands of categories was that we have a lot of redundancy and a lot of categories that seem to have been created on a whim that are now simply homes for junk.
Over the years, the desire to appease niche communities and people who just wanted a specific area has led to some categories that go up to 4 levels deep, and it's really no wonder it's so confusing for people to figure out where to submit their artwork.
The conclusion I've come to is simplicity. While I'm not about to rip apart everything and make 6 stand alone categories, I do believe that there is a lot we can do to simplify the category tree. That includes some of the following:
1. Merging categories that ma

Excuse me, I thought this was a Community This is not in response to any one person or recent event. It is something I have been meaning to express my thoughts on for some time. However, I have lightly touched on it before.Excuse me, I thought this was a Community4 years ago in Personal More Like This
At first 'surprise' is the word I would have used but I think now its more of a fascination and curiosity when deviantART puts out new features such as llama badges, cake badges, Groups, points, and so forth. There is always something of a this-is-destroying-dA (or the like) response.
I am aware that change will most always be met with some level of hostility. To some it appears that these features make the art mean less. I can't see that. The ART in deviantART comes second but is in caps - ART will for always be the core root of this site. Is ART all that defines an Artist? No, we are all deviant too.
It is the beautifully elegant combination of
that forms this sense of Community we have here
