1 Naming Your OCNAMING YOUR OC Basic Information1 Naming Your OC4 years ago in General Fiction More Like This
This is where we cover all the basic information for your OC. Almost all of the information here is the basic stats that should give us a general understanding of your OC
Ah, the start of every character. Before you even start thinking about any other aspect of your character, their name is the first thing you'll want to decide on. They are also the first thing that people will use to judge and evaluate your character. Of course your character has to have a name, unless for some reason and it better be a good one she doesn't. It's very easy to screw up the name, so remember these important points:
Spelling: Some names have multiple kinds of spelling. Do some research to see if a name has many other forms and decide which one you want.
Meaning: A lot of people like to focus on the meaning of their OC's name. FALSE! You do not have to focus on this when naming your character. Many Mary-Sue's have hor

Your face is big but mine is small
You may hate me, I say "so long"
For I am different, I am strong
They are dumb but you are smart
They blend in, you're not the part
But even if you don't belong
Say you're different, say you're strong
They hate us but we don't care
Because we will stand out everywhere
So if you're 'normal', don't get me wrong
We will be different, we will be strong

Snow Angel Pt. 2Continued from part one...Snow Angel Pt. 23 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
Mrs. Bennett breathed a sigh of relief before ushering him inside, "Great! Come on in. Make yourself at home."
With a nod and a grin, Jack brushed a bit of the snow off his shoulders, before stepping into the entranceway. As he silently took in his surroundings, Joyce made her way up the steps, where she passed by Sophie, who had been waiting patiently for the past fifteen minutes. Upon spotting the teenager, she turned to her mom, "What's goin' on?"
Jamie answered; excitement clear in his voice, "Jack's going to eat with us."
The little girl jumped for joy, "Yay! Jack Frost for dinner!" She then began dancing around in a circle, clapping as she sang, "Turkey lurkey, pumpkin pie-mashed potato in your eye!"
Jack let out a laugh at her made-up song, "You make it sound like I'm going to get eaten."
The blonde stopped in her tracks; facing her friend and stating rather seriously, "Well... are you delicious?"
Jamie held back a snort

Altair shifted a little in his seat as he worked through the project with Alex, the other didn't have much to say during the whole study session, but Altair didn't mind it all that much he was used to the quiet, being back in the Auditore home full of hustle and bustle was going to take some getting used to all over again, he hummed a little absently not aware he was even doing it as he wrote down some notes from one of the libraries study books they were working from and sketched out the eagle of the drawing in the book.
Alex turned to tell Altair to quiet with the humming it was sort of irritating but he paused when he noticed how content the other looked, which still unnerved the hell out of him Altair was this human shaped enigma that continued to confuse him, he noticed the other was drawing and raised an eyebrow; well that explained why he was in the art class Altiar was pretty talented at it, he had a ha

DO's and DON'Ts of OCsDOs and DONTs of Creating OCs.DO's and DON'Ts of OCs7 years ago in General Non-Fiction More Like This
I'm not a brilliant or fantasmically talented writer, but I know a decent OC when I see one. Or at least a non-crappy one.
I think we know how this works. Here we go
1. DO Try to vary your OCs personalities. In the real world, if everyone had the same awesome, flawless character, life would be mind-numbingly BORING. Also, not everyone is nice/horrible/depressed/energetic all the time. (Unless, of course, you want to use that as a flaw.)
2. DONT get too hung up on making profiles for your characters. Profiles are for procrastinators who want to make a fantastic character without getting started on the actual story. I was guilty of it too, before I realised how boring filling out the same form over and over again was.
Try describing them in the story, THEN make notes to help you remember stupid boring details like their star-sign and eye colour so you dont accidentally change them halfway through the st

Edit: This tutorial covers aspects related only to your Deviantart gallery and Deviantart Journal. It has nothing to do with the Deviantart's newly implemented points commission system. You can take commissions without using that points system on Deviantart as long as you have paypal.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO START
When you have enough watchers and people interested in your art.
When you have a closely-bounded community around your work/gallery
How many is enough I can't say for sure, because it depends on the community around you and your work. Some artists can live on one patron, others need to live on millions of them.
For DA, I would say typically around 20,000-40,000 pageviews, at least 40-50 watchers on your DA is best before you start considering taking commissions, (because out of that 40-50, you may have 1 person willing to pay, a safer bet is 100 people.) however, if your gallery has explosiv

The cave was blazing.
Cave walls, the ground, and everything in there were all burning ferociously.
The sounds of collapsing stones where mixed with the sound of boiling water.
Lighting up the night sky, that intense blaze shouted out far from the cave's mouth.
The cave was almost filled with smoke and it was as good as completely dark. In this smothering darkness, were only the flickering of the fire provided some light.
The girl was depending on this faint light to see anything.
After a while, her expression slowly became less tense.
The smoke around her was not thick anymore, and she could clearly see where it was going now.
As long as she passed the same way, she would be able to see the exit and be saved from the complete darkness.
She was wounded, but still able to walk; she suddenly stopped.
She could see by the light of the blazing fire that a figure walked slowly towards her.
It was a woman, wearing old and burnt clothing.

LifeOne moment, you're there. The next, you're not. Simple as that. And yet, it's so complex, so mystifying. It easily perplexes many. How can it be so close, so intimate to us, and yet remain a mystery like that? Such a small event being so big? Having such a huge effect? These unanswered questions express the mystery and uncertainty of those who feel its effects. They were so healthy, so happy...Life3 years ago in Philosophical More Like This
But now you'll never see their face again. Hear their voice. Feel their touch.
The tears stream down the faces of the close ones. They hold onto one another, thinking that, if they hold on tight enough, that person passed might feel as well, and come back to them. They don't want to recognize the fact that it's all over. All of it. They cling to a wish. That wish is slowly pushed away as time progresses and sanity returns. They run out of tears. The future is dark to them, filled with some more of these tragic cases. They turn to the past, where everyone is still "there." They let themselves get
Character BuilderHello, there! This is a list of genres, species, personalities, etc. To create a character for sketching or concepts when you have artist's block Or if you want to create a new OCCharacter Builder1 year ago in Profiles More Like This
My only requirement for using this is to favorite it and link your creations in the comments. I would love to see and favorite what people have made using this! =^-^=
Crediting would be nice too.
How to use:
There are no rules when it comes to creating a character. You can get a random number generator and for each category you spin a random number and that's the genre, gender, species, etc. Or you can simply look though them and just pick out what you want or like. You can use this however you want. If you don't like something, take it out of the list or you don't like a category, skip it.
There are a few class names (thief, assassin, prince, psycho) Those are only class names, just because you got it does not mean the character has to

I should note that this article will be primarily concerning YA fiction, as that is what I know most about. You may notice that some of these openings use elements that I cautioned against in an earlier article. Told ‘ya there were bountiful exceptions to writing “rules.”
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis
“There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.”
This one is just awesome. I adore some subtle humor in a book, and it’s a great way to start out if you’re witty enough. This short and amusing opening line tells us a lot about the character in a very short time. His name also gives an indication that he is not from the land of Narnia, but is probably from England, if this book is to be similar to the ones prior to it in the series. We know something about his age in t

Ah, the Mary Sue. We can't cobble together a truly comprehensive description of what they are, exactly, but we can agree on one thing: an annoying, 'perfect' character who, through a general lack of flaws and character development, is excruciating to sit through and often makes us gnash our teeth, tear our hair, and reach for the back button. This nefarious creature can be measured and detected, so let's all grab our magnifying glasses and get classifying.
This is a subjective subject; a trait that drives one person right up the wall might fail to get any reaction from another. As you go through the list, count up the points. Each trait will register from 1-5 points, with 1 being a mild thing and 5 being a serious infraction. If a trait is not addressed at all in the story the character comes from, or is totally unknown, just ignore it. And don't worry about racking up pointsthe de-Suifier part of the test ought to restore some balance to

Another dragon. I just stared at her for a minute, and she did the same to me. Her scales were a vivid green and her eyes were lemon. She had a slim but muscular build, looking mostly like mine. She had two beautiful earfins and two elegant horns sprouting from the back of her head. Her wings were a paler shade of green, with a small white talon on the tip of each wing-finger. A crest started on the top of her head and went all the way down to the tip of her long tail. The claws on her legs were startlingly white, and my gaze lingered. I lifted my foreleg to take a step and she tensed, causing me to stop it in mid-air. I slowly lowered it to the ground. As I lifted my other leg, a disturbing thought entered my mind. 'Wait... how do I know she... is a she?'. I noticed my tongue frantically darting in and out and hers doing the same. The scent she emitted had decreased, but I could still detect it. As I focused on the enticing odor, my instinct repeated the same word ove

apples, dammitThe Big Secret to Learning How to Draw:apples, dammit7 years ago in Editorial More Like This
In the Beginning... You see an apple, and you draw an apple. You look at your drawing, and it's utter crap. It looks nothing like the real thing, and you wonder why. "Hey, a real apple is red and round. My drawing is red and round. Huh. What's wrong?"
You draw some more apples. Many times.
And finally, one day, you have a Eureka! moment. You realize, *d'oh!* a real apple isn't entirely round! It's wider at the top, narrower underneath. It's got funky little lumps at the bottom. It's got a dip like a crazy deep belly button at the very top. You draw another apple. The result is better, but it's still crap. Much nicer crap than before, but still.... Hmm.
You draw more apples. Repeat.
Another day of drawing, another Eureka! moment. Hello! The red isn't really red. This particular apple is slightly darker than true red. And it's got some tiny tan spots on it. And at the top, the red turns into a pale green color near the stem. You draw an apple once
