How I Got Started...A journal entry from a friend prompted me to think about my beginnings as a mask maker. When I started making masks about 25 years ago (wow!) it was totally on a whim. I was born drawing. My fantasy art, when I was a kid, was pretty standard stuff (dragons, unicorns, things with wings) but I always had a good sense of design and color. I'd been dabbing in leather art...doing tooling on archery bracers and things of that nature. Nothing particularly spectacular or uncommon really but it ~was~ a good thing that I concentrated on tooling and carving first because I perfected my technique in that respect long before the masks happened. How I Got Started...3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Back then, NO ONE made masks out of heavy leather with detailed tooling. It just wasn't done. Masks of leather were either thick and plain or thin and swirly/curly in the Venetian style. People used molds for the thick masks, and molds press and mar carving. People used their hands shaping the thin leather, but obviously the thin leather wasn't suitabl

Addiction is a Mental IllnessOnce an addict, always an addictAddiction is a Mental Illness1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I grew up surrounded by people who threw themselves into drugs and alcohol to escape the realities of their lives, or with the hopes that their addiction might finally kill them.
Alcohol and narcotics are two of the most dangerous addictions we come in contact within our lives, and also, two of the most tempting ones to delve into.
Few can say that they haven't had a drink after a bad day, or perhaps popped a pill, smoked a spliff, to relax after stressful times. However, while many are able to have a taste and stay in control, many are not so lucky. Addictions come without real warning, what starts out as fun and recreational use can turn into severe addiction, and once you're in, it's almost impossible to find a way out.
Addictions are not to be romanticized
The romanticizing of addictions has always been incredibly common. Movies often make it look "badass", people want to be that cool edgy kid who's experienced it

Calling all Fashionistas! So, as some of you guys may have noticed, I'm drawing my own Adventure Time comic (Pfft, who am I kidding, it's probably the only reason why you guys are even watching me), where Fionna goes to school in casual clothing. And as some of you may also know, I'm not exactly very 'creative,' or 'imaginative,' or 'good at designing,' so here I am asking you guys who are able to design to draw and whip up your own outfit ideas for Fionna, Marshall Lee, FP, Gumball, Pen or any other character who's already made an appearance in my comic if you want to, and want to get your ideas expressedCalling all Fashionistas!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
You can design any type of outfit. casual, formal, semi-formal, child's, business, summer, winter, etc. etc.
When you have your design all ready, you can submit them to the folder in my FC,
under 'Outfit Designs,' which I will be creating shortly.
You can submit as many as you want, and if I like your design and want to use it for my comic, I'll make sure to credit you for the design and e

The Allure of a Red Dress
Maybe it’s being the color of blood that makes red such a strong color, especially when displayed in public. It is exotic–a matador’s cape, or a vampire’s, or a flamenco dancer’s skirts. Most women have their “little black dress” for evening’s out. Black tells no secrets. It’s on the occasion of the “red dress” that we suddenly wonder what’s on the someone’s mind.
The message of “red” in novels, films and music is passion barely controlled, of sexual temptation. It is a flashing warning light. Plastic surgery made John Dillinger
Being happy with your artI've noticed lately, that there's this emotion that leaves people overwhelmed with the massive amount of good art in the community, thinking that they can never become as good or popular as those others. So sad, because skill or popularity in itself shouldn't be the major goal of an art community. I think many people who start out here get so overwhelmed that they forget what it's actually about.Being happy with your art2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Many people out here, sign up to DeviantArt (or any internet art community) in order to publish their work on the internet. They've probably looked around for a while already. They saw those amazing artists that had millions of pageviews, and secretly hoped that by putting their art on the internet, they would be able to do the same. To become madly popular -- a community icon.
Well, sorry to burst your bubble; but it's probably not gonna happen. And if it's gonna happen; it's not going to be soon.
According to DeviantArt, the website has over 31 million

China was cool and HK of course is shopping heaven. I'll make a better post later after I sort out all these photos. Most of the pics I took are of weird things... =3=
But anyway before that!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I was in Shanghai, this little sparrow (?) flew over and landed near me, so I approached it like I always do when I spot birds, expecting it to fly off when I try to poke it..but it didn't 80! So I picked it up.
Sorry for the crappy photos, my dad took them and he never focuses on the right thing OTL

"I've mentioned this before, however, that was a long time ago when I had less of a following and perhaps less of an impact.
When you tell a fellow artist "Oh I wish I was as good as you!" or say things like "You're so talented I'm just going to stop making art/killmyself/cry", you don't flatter them. At best, you're merely raising them up by putting yourself down and they don't want that. At worst, you are making them very uncomfortable or actively distressing them. Even if you think you're joking, remember that this person probably hears this very frequently. It's a sore point. They may have some kind of emotional response to it beyond irritation.
So, let's go over the basics:
Wow, you've got a lot of skill!
You inspire me to work harder to become as good as you are.
Oh, you're so talented, I wish I was as talented as you!
You're so talented, I give up.
Remember that your words have an effect.
Yes, thank you! W

Glass Eyes:iconLyrak: Lyrak asks: "OK, question for folks who use glass/resin eyes for their sculpted portions: where the heck do you find them??? I am having trouble finding eyes of the correct size for stuff like this. o.o; "Glass Eyes3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I know of two places you can buy eyes.
US: Van Dyke's Taxidermy
Personally I use a 10-14mm eye for my dolls. That is a standard size for birds, amphibians, some mammals and dolls so it's quite a common size to find.
You can also make your own if you have the time or inclination. You need to make a mould of a marble or something similar using platinum silicone, then when the silicone has cured you pour in crystal clear resin. You must use platinum silicone as tin silicone (RTV - room temperature vulcanization) silicone will inhibit the cure of the resin and it will stay tacky forever. You can paint the back of the resin cabochon with acrylics, inks, watercolours or
Watercolor tips and tutorials!Hey guys. So I've been asked countless times to make a watercolor tutorial... and while I don't really have time to put that together right now (it's that crazy time of the semester) I did write out a few very basic tips regarding the nature of watercolor. I do plan on making an actual tutorial eventually as well, with pictures and more stuff about process. Perhaps this winter I can make a proper tutorial!Watercolor tips and tutorials!4 years ago in Personal More Like This
-Start with a ground wash at the beginning of painting something, with a high concentration of water. Starting with a light color base will help to unify the color scheme of the rest of the picture.
-Watercolor dries lighter than it looks when it's wet. Remember to keep this in mind. Gouache, on the other hand, dries darker. That's one of many things that makes combining gouache and watercolor tricky
-Work in layers, from light to dark. Don't expect to go straight from a white page to a dark color all at once! The darkest areas will come last.
-If you've got two areas of differ

Americans have a long summer vacation tradition of visiting the foreign capitals of the world and being sure to spend at least one day in each nation’s most iconic art museum. In Paris, we visit the Louvre. In Madrid, the Prado. In Rome, the Borghese. We feel far more comfortable in identifying the different peoples of our planet through examples of their greatest art works than we do about identifying ourselves as being represented by any one iconic “American” art museum or artist. Maybe the country is just too big for one musuem and so it has always fallen to our pop arts to carry the true visual narrative of what’s going on in the hearts and minds of the masses.
Comic-Con has become the new arts and culture go-to in domestic summer vacation destin
