Plated DessertsPlating can be such an underrated art form at times. I've often heard it dismissed as 'boring', 'sterile' and criticised for all looking the same. Maybe we just have a tendency to lust after the rustic, messy desserts. Maybe we like to tear down what is seen as a hoity-toity way of presenting food. Or maybe we just don't see the skill and technique that goes into plating.Plated Desserts2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Skillful plating up of food requires a good eye, a steady hand and a flair for design. Careful consideration goes into everything from which way the dish is offset, to the type of garnishes on it, to the type of plate it is presented on. It, in turn, necessitates learning a whole host of other skills and techniques to create the garnishes that adorn the dish.
These deviants show off their plating skills with a host of delicious desserts.

International Tiger Day + FeatureYesterday was International Tiger Day: an annual day of both celebration of the beauty of, and awareness of the plight of, tigers. Tiger populations around the globe have plummeted due to hunting, habitat loss and climate shifts. 100 years ago there were more than 100,000 tigers left in the wild. Today their numbers sit at a meagre 3,200. Three subspecies of tiger have already gone extinct. The remaining 6 subspecies are either endangered or critically endangered. In a decade, they may all be completely extinct from the wild. They've lost over 90% of their habitat, and the shifting climate is threatening to remove what little we've left them. If we don't mitigate the impacts of climate change now, the Sundarbans (their largest remaining stronghold) will be under water in 50 years. It's not a problem for our granchildren: many of us will live to see this.International Tiger Day + Feature1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
In order to save them, we need to mitigate their impacts on their environment and that of the rest of the ecosystem. We need to work
Introduction to Cross StitchingCross StitchingIntroduction to Cross Stitching1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Cross stitch is one of a number of embroidery stitches, but usually the one most people are familiar with. Whether it was in a school art class or just randomly picking up a cross stitch kit as a kid, a lot of us have tried it at some point. Lets delve into this popular stitch a little bit.
What is a cross stitch?
As the name suggests, is is simply a cross, or an 'X' stitched with thread onto canvas. Typically, it's used to make a picture or a pattern. The stitch will form a complete square, and in this regard it is quite similar to pixel art. Through the placement of individual stitches adjacent to one another, an overall image will eventually appear.
It's an incredibly simple stitch, but can take some time to master. Like many crafts, it can be difficult to notice the

Artists Toolbox: Airbrushing BasicsToday I'd like to take a moment to talk about airbrushing basics. I feel that it is an art form that is very under represented here on deviantART and perhaps with a little education on it, more people might become interested in airbrushing.Artists Toolbox: Airbrushing Basics1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Airbrushing can be used for various different things, from body art, to painting model cars and planes, to painting sculptures, to painting automotives, T-shirts, canvas, even cake decorating, etc etc, the possibilities with airbrushing are pretty limitless and as such can be a wonderful art form to get familiar with and perhaps even utilize yourself. Oh, and did I also mention that airbrushing is fun?
Try it, you'll like it!
Airbrushes come with a few different features which I've outlined below to help make an educated guess on what type would best suit you if this is something you're interested in trying.
More Than What's For DinnerOf all the wonderful aspects of culinary art, the one that gets the least love is often savoury meals. So often we see them written off as happy snaps of what's for dinner, but they are so much more than that.More Than What's For Dinner1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
I'm not sure what it is about the savoury that gets shunned so quickly. A dish can be incredibly complex and highly skilled, but it won't get oohed and ahhed at as much as a quick batch of cookies or cupcakes. Maybe we're all dessert lovers at heart? Or maybe we see main meals as more common place? Either way, when we dismiss it we're all missing out on a world of skill and creativity.
A lot of the food presented takes many years of honing the skills needed to achieve it. From basic kitchen skills and knife handling, to learning how to cook the ingredients themselves, to then being able to experiment and modify dishes. The food is plated, styled and set up ready to be photographed. Everything from the dish it's served on to the colour of a placemat or the positioning of cutlery i

Hello! Some of you may have already seen the soosh refs I've made for all the sooshes I own/co-own. If not, here's the links:
I'm opening commissions to make ref sheets with the same bases for your sooshes!
Each one costs $4 or 400 points. For a very complex soosh, it is $1 more ($5 total)
Triptychs are $10 because I do each pup a separately (see above examples)
here's a couple examples of what I consider to be a "complex" soosh:
If you don't know if your soosh would be considered complex, just ask!

What the judges were saying: The judges were absolutely smitten by this wonderful, heartfelt piece of an older Dumbo and his mother. Just magical all around. Congratulations on your first place win!
Super Roo, Wishes Yoo... by LeafFox
What the judges were saying: Kanga is definitely an underdrawn Disney character, and we love this beautiful interaction between her and her little trouble-maker, Roo. You can really sense the love she has for her son even though he's being a bit of a nuisance in the picture. Hehe. Congratulations on your second place win!

Cosplay Tutorial: Molding and casting your piecesThis tutorial is based on how to use Smooth-on's Oomoo- and Smooth-cast series materials for cosplay purposes. There is little special too about using fiberglass instead of smooth-cast. Hope you enjoy!Cosplay Tutorial: Molding and casting your pieces2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Ok. Lets get started!
"I need five identically same looking parts like in that center of the picture for my cosplay but making them one by one would take LOTS of time. What to do?"
If you have the right materials then the answer is simple: "Make one sharp prototype of that piece then mold it and cast it."
Here are the materials you need:
- Modelling paste for making the prototype (or what ever material you like. It won't affect to the final product)
- Smooth-On's Oomoo 25 or 30 for making the mold (mold max 20-40 works too but it' need more skill to use. So i recommend Oomoo)
- Smooth-On's Smoothcast series for casting (i recommend smooth-cast 320 because it is easy to paint with spray paint)
(Smooth-On got lot of resellers in few countries. Here in Finland is Silcom.fi who sells their p
Photomanip: Challenges and possible solutionsHi everyone,Photomanip: Challenges and possible solutions2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I am still on hiatus because my 18-hour exam is just a week and a half away. However, I had a few moments, so I wanted to tell you about the results of the photomanipulation community meeting we had the other week.
First, let me say that I am extremely grateful to those of you who came. Everyone had a positive, constructive attitude, and I really think we were able to make good segue into a community that will acknowledge everyone's talents.
Here are some themes that came up and the solutions we decided to create for them.
Problem: People are concerned about what stock is and is not allowed to be used. They are also concerned about being able to copyright their own work and keep people from stealing or copying them.
Solution: I am not sure there is a solution for this one that will be satisfactory to all people, as this is kind-of a risk you take when you post your work online-- especially if you
