Empty as the cold, it sits there.
There is has been for centuries,
seeing all, nothing seeing it.
It longs for one thing: company;
the one thing it will never get.
Nothing dares draw near its surface
in fear their eyes will be opened.
Not the swan, not the stars nor man.
Even the majestic mountains
Go to lengths to avoid its face.
In loneliness it waits longer
for the single brave creature
who will look into it, realize
the hidden truth, touch it with a

But, until then, it waits.
LifeOne moment, you're there. The next, you're not. Simple as that. And yet, it's so complex, so mystifying. It easily perplexes many. How can it be so close, so intimate to us, and yet remain a mystery like that? Such a small event being so big? Having such a huge effect? These unanswered questions express the mystery and uncertainty of those who feel its effects. They were so healthy, so happy...Life2 years ago in Philosophical More Like This

The tears stream down the faces of the close ones. They hold onto one another, thinking that, if they hold on tight enough, that person passed might feel as well, and come back to them. They don't want to recognize the fact that it's all over. All of it. They cling to a wish. That wish is slowly pushed away as time progresses and sanity returns. They run out of tears. The future is dark to them, filled with some more of these tragic cases. They turn to the past, where everyone is still "there." They let themselves get

It sure feels like you have.
Is who I am not enough?
My confidence, my knowledge in all that I am too little?
Worth just a glance, once, less than fifteen minutes, just to be passed over, lost once again to the shadows?
Is speaking to me too hard to do? An effort?
Do I annoy you? Is that it?
Why can I not find and hold onto you?
We meet, we connect, and then.
Even if just mentally, it seems.
Magic turned to dust.
What have I done?
What have I not?
Am I really this forgettable?
I'd like to believe otherwise.

Twilight has descended upon the city. Where the light of a shop switches off, the warm one of a home switches on, altogether becoming beacons to the weary workers, ushering them home to a warm supper, good company, and shelter from the increasingly chilly air. Slowly but surely, with the last lights of day, the night owls begin to emerge, seeking out the bright neon signs of clubs. Seeking to have a marvelous time, filled to the brim with friends and fun.
And then, laughter. But not a collective laughter. Not a laughter belonging to any earth-bound human, for that matter.
It echoes throughout the wintery air, bouncing off of the oriental buildings with the wind at its back, filling all corners of the young night with mischievous mirth.
It brings with it thick, fluffy clouds that quickly blot out the stars and rising moon, anxious to unload their burdens upon the unsuspecting cityfolk.
Then, as people are just a few paces from their homes and the lines at club entrances begin to form, t

Despite the battle that you know must be going on for Jamie—for the children of the world, for hope, joy, and light—you somehow manage to fall into a restless sleep.
Maybe it had something to do with that moonbeam that wiggled its way through the canopy of dark clouds and flooded directly into your bedroom.
The moment sleep takes you, you’re transported into the realm of dreams.
You’re standing in an entirely white space. So pure, so devoid of anything corrupt. It goes on endlessly, stretching onward for all eternity.
Not knowing what else to do, you walk forward, your footsteps echoing even though you’re barefoot.
Just when you begin to think that you’re absolutely alone, you feel a presence behind you.
You cautiously turn around, bracing yourself for anything.
Well, just about anything.
Because what you’re now facing completely throws you off.
Or rather, who.
He stands no taller than four feet high. He’s dressed like a gentleman,

“That’s right, ‘Jack,’” he says as he walks up to you, stopping less than a foot away from you. His eyes never leave you.
You look at him searchingly, still not entirely convinced that he’s standing before you, seeming to have somehow remembered you…
“Jack…” you finally manage to say in a small, quiet voice.
His mischievous smirk turns into a soft smile. He nods gently.
The next thing you know, his arms are wrapped around you in a tight embrace, his head bowed and past your own as he envelops you in himself.
“You idiot,” he sighs. His voice is trembling slightly as he fights back emotion. “Letting them do that to me. To us. Never again.&

The sleigh skids to a stop on the lake’s surface, the skis leaving long white marks on the ice.
Above you, the tired stars begin to fade as the first light of day breaks over the horizon, giving themselves over to sleep until the night returns to reign once again.
North scoops the limp Jack back up into his arms, and the three of you wordlessly disembark from the sleigh.
You follow North off the lake, trying hard not to fall on the slippery surface. You breathe a small sigh of relief as you step onto the snowy bank, then continue after North, forced to jog a little to keep up with his long strides.
He stops in front of a tall tree with a thick, sturdy trunk, its leaves and branches dusted with white snow. It’s quite a few yards from the lake’s edge, but its view goes uninterrupted by other foliage. He crouches down and sets Jack in front of it, sitting him down so his back is propped up against the trunk.
He really does look like he just nodded off, his head bowed, ar

It completely melts your heart.
The thing that brought the two of you together. That one song, that single, insignificant line that you had sung so long ago that had led you to seeing him. The first domino that had fallen in a long line of wonderful events.
You’re smiling at the fact that he’s finally doing this trademark action to you, but it’s tearing you apart at the same time.
To know that this is the first and last time, that he won’t ever nip at your nose again.
At least, not on purpose. Or not knowing who you are, if he does decide to mess specifically with you.
You don’t want him to see you cry, but you can’t help it. This is just too much. You feel your bottom lip begin to quiver, tears blurring your vision.

Its small, snowy eyes meet yours.

The bird hops over to the side of the ledge, where the window ends and wall begins. It taps multiple times at this spot, tweeting at you once again.
Heart racing, your fingers find the frame.
And you open the window.
The cardinal zooms past you in a flurry of wind, its wings narrowly missing you. It circles up to the ceiling after a lap or two around the room, chirping excitedly.

Here is a character that is me. In every way and form, me. We are so much the same. Me. That is, if I had spiky hair that was white as freshly-fallen snow, command over winter phenomena, and mesmerizing blue eyes. Oh, and one other thing that I am not. I’d have to be a boy. But that is where the differences end between me and him.
My Jack Frost.
He went unseen, unheard for three hundred years. I haven’t had quite that lengthy existence, but it has felt like an eternity. Nobody believing in him. In me. To try to reach out and be heard only to be walked right through like nothing but air. And yet, to continue to assist others and bring them goodness—bring them happiness and fun—despite the fact that it would not change my invisibility even though I secretly hoped it would, despite the implications it had for me. That’s us. Alone in the world.
Four. Hand-in-hand with the previous, I suppose.

Or, should I say, “lost in thought”?
Anyway, my brain was so preoccupied with other thoughts that there just simply wasn’t room for even the discussion going on in one of the two classes I didn’t absolutely despise—English. The other was Calculus.
Oh, my brain.

Cake scattered the floor.
It was a beautiful red color. Red velvet. Splattered all across the tile that was yellowed with time. There was one big chunk, surrounded by others that slowly grew into smaller and smaller crumbs the further they were from this central fragment. A few of the slightly larger pieces had been grinded into the kitchen floor, smushed into it, trampled by angry feet. They looked like random dark crimson blotches among the innumerable crumbs. The way the broken cake looked, the whole scene strongly resembled a horrible, grotesque, quite unique murder scene.
Like the floor was tainted with blood.
It would have been quite the wonderful, delicious cake, too. It was moist, but not too much so. Fluffy. Just the right balance of ingredients. Holding together on your fork until the moment you ate it. Melt-in-your-mouth. A delightful quality only found in the culinary creations of true masters of pastry. Your hand freezes in its motion.
You steal a quick glance at Jack, as if breaking your gaze from the moon will end the conversation. Well, something of a conversation, since you’re not exactly talking back to it.
He’s asleep, lips slightly parted, his chest rising and falling with each slow and deep breath.
Really? Sleeping. At a time like this? you think as you refocus on the moon.
You squint your eyes slightly, still not quite believing that the moon is speaking to you. Was something in the food that you ate today? Maybe it was just the wind. Or one of those times when you think you hear your name being called and after searching everywhere for the source of the call it turns out to be just your imagination.
You stare it down, waiting for the Man in the Moon to say something else.

This latter case applies a little too perfectly to you.

One that connected with her on such a deep level that no amount of writing or creating could get it out of her system, and never will. One that revived her love of writing, something she hadn't done in years because it never gained any recognition, she never felt it was good enough, and life events just left her feeling so trampled upon, further deterring her from putting the pen to the paper.

You stand in front of the shop and mindlessly gaze at the display items, holding a small plastic bag with a new book resting inside, patiently waiting to be read.
Two days have passed since you parted with Jack.
You haven’t seen even a glimpse of him since.
