The Shepard-Vakarian Files
Mini-fic: Lazy Evening
It's a quiet evening at home for Garrus, Shepard, and Aetius. Well, mostly quiet.
Lilliana Shepard, the former captain of the Normandy, liked showers. There was just something soothing about the feeling of the warm water cascading down, caressing her skin, and now that she was (semi) retired, she would indulge in stupidly long ones.
This was especially when Garrus was home to watch Aetius, and she didn’t have to worry about the little turian getting into some sort of trouble. Which he would if you took your eyes off him for even a second. Everyone said that it was just the age he was at, but it didn’t make it less stressful for either of his parents.
With a sigh she hit the control panel to shut off the water flow and grabbed for a towel. As much as she loved Garrus for being willing to indulge her like this, it wasn’t fair to leave him as the sole parental authority when she they were both

Even through the dizziness that threatened to topple me over in my seat, I could tell that last grenade had hit home. I hadn't heard the dreaded clink-clink until it was too late and Garrus was yelling my name, and then the world went black for a few seconds. By the time I staggered to my feet, EDI declared the area clear and was rerouting the cannons on her own. Relieved the mission was complete, I would've fallen back to the floor if Garrus hadn't caught me. The medi-gel was cool and comforting against my neck, but still this fuzzy feeling remained.
And that couldn't be good, considering the amount of worry in Garrus' eyes as he lifted and carried me to the shuttle.
Most importantly, I was tired. Weariness seeped into my bones, my body heavy and my eyelids heavier. I could rest on the way back to the Normandy, gather my strength as I closed my eyes-
"Stay with me, Shepard."
Rarely was I irritated to hear Garrus' lilting voice. I

Setting: This story bridges a small gap between the events of Mass Effect 2 and 3.
I swiped a hand over my face in mock frustration before I glanced up at the soldier who had entered. "Mr. Vega, I hadn't thought you would have such a short term memory. I am no longer a commander."
"Not legally, ma'am," James said smugly as I walked over. "Yet. Admiral Anderson wants to see you. I'm to take you to his office. I think it's urgent."
I frowned but nodded consent; he caught my look just before he turned and fell into step behind me. James meant well, and I admired his obvious faith in me, but reminding me of my title- former title- most every day was, in fact, becoming annoying.
And now he had been told to escort me to the Admiral's office. It wasn't his fault for following orders- I commended him for that- but it was one more subtle insult piled
The Loss of One--Shakarian“They’ll get her back, Garrus, I know they will,” Liara’s voice came from behind him. It was soft and, although she tried to sound reassuring, her words were full of uncertainty. He felt her hand come in contact with his shoulder. It felt like a ghost touching him, not an actual person. Or perhaps it was he who felt like the ghost. He had managed to swallow grief over the same person before. But this…this was different. He had fallen in love with a woman who was born to die and although he didn’t want to come to terms with it, he knew that the chances of ever seeing her again were slim to none. The Loss of One--Shakarian2 years ago in Romance More Like This
To confirm the Asari’s existence, Garrus reached up and grabbed the hand, holding it in place. “Yeah, maybe,” he managed to rasp as he bit back his emotions. There was an universal feeling of grief among the crew members but he felt like his was stronger. And why shouldn’t it have been? He loved Shepard with every fiber of his body and

Shepard came over to talk about the weapon upgrades. His favorite subject, really, and Garrus had been listening very carefully in the beginning. But the longer she spoke, the fewer words got through to him. The idea that it was a translator glitch occurred to him but he dismissed it quickly. He understood the words. Those that he could catch.

Where Have You Been?Everything seemed to blur around him for a moment as he gained his bearings. The light pierced his eyes, and he squeezed them shut against it, even though there was no pain. As he slowly reopened them, he came to find that he was back home… At least, he thought it was home. The buildings seemed familiar, and the people all looked the same; there was just something…off about his surroundings, though he couldn’t put his finger on it.Where Have You Been?2 years ago in Romance More Like This

It would explain why nothing seemed to be in perfect focus until he touched it.

Guided Meditation -
Shepard and Thane
The captain's quarters are far off from the engineering deck, but I can still hear the hum of the engines if I shut the music off and listen to the quiet. Most nights, it's enough to get me to sleep.
I'll lay back and watch the stars crawl by through the skylight, or watch the fish flit around in their tanks. Slowly, it becomes harder and harder to keep my eyes open. I'll roll over so the glow of the fish tank doesn't penetrate the darkness behind my closed eyes as I drift off to sleep.
The darkness is overwhelming. If I squint really, really hard I can just barely make out the pinpricks of distant stars. But it's so hard to keep my eyes open. I'm cold. Freezing cold, so cold I feel like my bones will implode and my skin will tear as it shrivels and tightens and I open my mouth to scream.
I can't. I open my mouth, try to

"These are delicious, some of the best I've ever had," Shepard said, popping another crunchy cricket into her mouth.
"I can't even watch you eat those. I've seen a lot of awful things in my life, Shepard, but this is coming pretty close to the top of the list. They're creepy." Garrus winced, as she pulled another out of her bag of dried crickets, biting half of it off and savoring it before tossing the rest into her mouth. "And huge. And disgusting. And I can't stand that sound."
"What, you don't have insects on Palaven? I would have thought chitinous insects would be everywhere."
"Insects, yeah, but they definitely aren't edible."
She dug through her bag to find the largest cricket she could and held it up to her face, inspecting it thoroughly. "Look," she said, nudging him with her elbow. "This one almost looks like you." Shepard held the cri

The ultimate weapon of destruction, the Crucible, is complete. It's something that was never completed in any previous cycle , and the Reapers are with backs against the wall.
My interpretation of events is that the Harbinger alters Shepard's perception of reality trying to convince her to choose Synthesis, but she is actually there, inside the Crucible, and her actions do have concrete consequences. It's not just a dream. So we don't see how the crucible really looks like from within, nor we see the Harbinger's actual essence but we only see what he wants us to see. But Shep is awake and the things she does, she does for real, although moving in a reality she perceives in a transfigured way.
On Thessia Kai Leng steals the data from Shepard and gives them to TIM, who is later teleported inside the Crucible by the Harbinger.
There the Harbinger tries to convince him to choose 'Synthesis' but he fails since TIM chooses Control.

I had just set the bottle of rum I'd snuck from Dr. Chakwas' private stash on my desk when the door whirred open. I didn't have to turn to recognize the loud footfall.
"I'd tease you about walking in unannounced," I said listlessly, "but I'm too tired."
"Aren't we all." Garrus sat heavily on the edge of the bed, face hidden by his propped hands. I abandoned the alcohol temporarily and collapsed beside him.
"You look like how I feel." I petted the side of his fringe idly as I slumped against his shoulder.
"And I feel how you look," he replied with a hint of amusement. He dropped his hands, clutching at mine. "Shepard, I know you had your reasons for what you decided..."
From anyone else, I would've been moved to anger by that statement. As it was, I just felt a fresh wave of sorrow. "But?"

I rarely, if ever, get sick, which I consider a lucky combination of Dr. Chakwas' slightly-intrusive care and my own robust immune system. I have been exposed to dangerous viruses and bacteria for years in the heat of combat and hardly contracted a sniffle.
The last few days, however, I had been crippled with severe migraines, and I'd had just about enough. Dr. Chakwas had done all she could, yet they persisted. It was she who suggested I seek the migraine guru on the ship, and with some chagrin and great hope I made my way down to the observation deck.
Kaidan and I were still a bit unsettled around each other; our smiles a little forced, our laughter a little loud. We were still trying to figure out how to be friends, and I dreaded making him feel obliged.
I needn't have worried. His greeting was awkward, but he immediately relaxed and went into a delightful soldier-friend mode when I slumped against him on the couch, clutch

“Shit!” Vega swore as they ran back toward the house. “Shit!”
“I really hate that I let her talk me into so much land,” Garrus huffed as he topped the hill in the back yard.
“Wait, over here,” He motioned for Vega to follow him. “We’re going to need something more than our fists.”
Garrus threw open the door to the shed and walked in. On the back wall he pressed a switch and James gawked as the wall swiveled.

Soon Shepard and Tali arrived with the air car to find Garrus waiting for them at the place where they had gone their separate ways a short time earlier. Before Garrus got to the car Shepard stepped out, signaling for Tali to stay put and intercepted him. She opened her mouth.
"I know you want to talk about this... but I don't," Garrus said and Shepard snapped her mouth closed again. "Not yet."
"I know it didn't go the way you planned," Shepard still said quietly, resting her hand on his arm. "But I think it's for the best."
"I'm not so sure..." Garrus replied, but he had to admit that Shepard was most likely right.
"Give it time," Shepard sighed, still blocking Garrus' way back to the car.
"Yeah," he shrugged, not looking Shepard into the eyes. "Maybe that'll be enough." Garrus hesitated for a moment before continuing. "I want to know I did the right thing. Not just for me – for my men. They deserve to be avenged. But when Sidonis was in m

The three of them got to a cab which took them to the spaceport. With the unknown asari driver sitting in the same car, Shepard apparently was not willing to speak about their work, so they sat in silence. When they reached the spaceport, they immediately spotted some unusual commotion between an asari and a volus, who was escorted by two turian bodyguards.
"Where do you think you're going?" the asari asked sternly.
"I'm taking my goods to Omega, detective," the short, round alien replied.
"You're not going anywhere, merchant," the official replied. "Not until I solve this murder."
The idea of police investigation sparked a sudden interest in Garrus. As much as he had hated working under the strict rules of C-Sec, he had enjoyed the knowledge that they had been locking up criminals and making the galaxy safer.
"I had nothing to do with that!" the volus argued. Garrus could see Shepard squinting her eyes, and he got the feeling she was thinking

First, as you know, all characters, including our beloved Normandy, are owned by Bioware. But this story is mine.
So, this note won't be as long as the last, it's just that I know there's a lot of Mass Effect Universe, as I am using it, that hasn't been explained so I want to give you a brief explanation before you're confused. First, we're in flash back country still, but it's worth it, I promise. And also, there have been some changes to personnel on the Normandy. No one is missing, but some people are known by different ranks now. I'm sure you'll figure it out as you read along. This flash back takes place the next day after Garrus' flash back from "Lost in Thought," if you're trying to keep track of the time line. And Jane is still only 30 weeks along in her pregnancy. I think that about covers it. Enjoy!!!

I feel like a little background is needed here. First, the flash back you'll read in this installment is taking place a year after the end of ME3. Jane destroyed the reapers, Garrus found her in the rubble and as soon as she was able to stay conscious long enough for them to have a conversation, he proposed. They were married once she was back up on her feet. Soon after, she put in her resignation, but because officers are scarce, they requested that she continue her position as the Normandy's Commander until a replacement could be found. I know, if you read "The Scale," you're probably thinking about the comment Garrus makes about "the woman he knew a year ago" but he wasn't referring to the end of the war. He was referring to the woman he'd married, the woman who'd *lived* to tell about killing the reapers. The woman who looke

The hum of the engines hadn't bothered him before Donnelly and his crew installed the silly torque compensator (which was entirely unnecessary to begin with), into the guiding of the starboard cannon. Either there was a loose panel on the compensator, or the tech team didn't return the original panels in proper positions, and now there was a sickening resonance with one of the lower frequencies of the mass effect drive.
Garrus had demanded that the engineering crew come back and reassemble the entire thing, but Donnelly wouldn't hear of it. Literally.
