The Shepard-Vakarian Files
Mini-fic: Lazy Evening
It's a quiet evening at home for Garrus, Shepard, and Aetius. Well, mostly quiet.
Lilliana Shepard, the former captain of the Normandy, liked showers. There was just something soothing about the feeling of the warm water cascading down, caressing her skin, and now that she was (semi) retired, she would indulge in stupidly long ones.
This was especially when Garrus was home to watch Aetius, and she didn’t have to worry about the little turian getting into some sort of trouble. Which he would if you took your eyes off him for even a second. Everyone said that it was just the age he was at, but it didn’t make it less stressful for either of his parents.
With a sigh she hit the control panel to shut off the water flow and grabbed for a towel. As much as she loved Garrus for being willing to indulge her like this, it wasn’t fair to leave him as the sole parental authority when she they were both
The Loss of One--Shakarian“They’ll get her back, Garrus, I know they will,” Liara’s voice came from behind him. It was soft and, although she tried to sound reassuring, her words were full of uncertainty. He felt her hand come in contact with his shoulder. It felt like a ghost touching him, not an actual person. Or perhaps it was he who felt like the ghost. He had managed to swallow grief over the same person before. But this…this was different. He had fallen in love with a woman who was born to die and although he didn’t want to come to terms with it, he knew that the chances of ever seeing her again were slim to none. The Loss of One--Shakarian2 years ago in Romance More Like This
To confirm the Asari’s existence, Garrus reached up and grabbed the hand, holding it in place. “Yeah, maybe,” he managed to rasp as he bit back his emotions. There was an universal feeling of grief among the crew members but he felt like his was stronger. And why shouldn’t it have been? He loved Shepard with every fiber of his body and

Even through the dizziness that threatened to topple me over in my seat, I could tell that last grenade had hit home. I hadn't heard the dreaded clink-clink until it was too late and Garrus was yelling my name, and then the world went black for a few seconds. By the time I staggered to my feet, EDI declared the area clear and was rerouting the cannons on her own. Relieved the mission was complete, I would've fallen back to the floor if Garrus hadn't caught me. The medi-gel was cool and comforting against my neck, but still this fuzzy feeling remained.
And that couldn't be good, considering the amount of worry in Garrus' eyes as he lifted and carried me to the shuttle.
Most importantly, I was tired. Weariness seeped into my bones, my body heavy and my eyelids heavier. I could rest on the way back to the Normandy, gather my strength as I closed my eyes-

Just a Kiss (Shakarian)Calibrating. Calibrating. Calibrating. The Mako had been put under a great deal of fire and handled with less care than it should have been. So there he was, awake long after the others. Even the requisitions’ officer, who had a tendency to stay up late to ensure all of his licenses were up to date, had called it a night. Other than the muffled hum of the drive core and hushed blips of his terminal, Garrus was the only body displaying signs of consciousness.Just a Kiss (Shakarian)2 years ago in Sci-Fi More Like This

Fifteen minutes of reprieve from the glowing screen. Garrus shuffled a bit from his station and stretched. He lulled his neck from side to side, rolled his shoulders, contemplated grabbing a few winks, rejected it, shifted his hips, then leaned against the Mako. He flexed his talons a couple times each as he observed the nearly empty shuttle bay. Blue eyes moved over Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams’ st
Where Have You Been?Everything seemed to blur around him for a moment as he gained his bearings. The light pierced his eyes, and he squeezed them shut against it, even though there was no pain. As he slowly reopened them, he came to find that he was back home… At least, he thought it was home. The buildings seemed familiar, and the people all looked the same; there was just something…off about his surroundings, though he couldn’t put his finger on it.Where Have You Been?2 years ago in Romance More Like This
He walked forward through the crowd, and he found it odd that everyone seemed at calm and happy. He knew that she’d completed the mission and the years that followed had been extremely prosperous, but he didn’t remember everyone being so at peace. Was he dreaming? It would explain why nothing seemed to be in perfect focus until he touched it.
It hadn’t occurred to him until now that his eyes had fully adjusted to the immense amount of ambient light that surrounded h

Shepard came over to talk about the weapon upgrades. His favorite subject, really, and Garrus had been listening very carefully in the beginning. But the longer she spoke, the fewer words got through to him. The idea that it was a translator glitch occurred to him but he dismissed it quickly. He understood the words. Those that he could catch.

The ultimate weapon of destruction, the Crucible, is complete. It's something that was never completed in any previous cycle , and the Reapers are with backs against the wall.
My interpretation of events is that the Harbinger alters Shepard's perception of reality trying to convince her to choose Synthesis, but she is actually there, inside the Crucible, and her actions do have concrete consequences. It's not just a dream. So we don't see how the crucible really looks like from within, nor we see the Harbinger's actual essence but we only see what he wants us to see. But Shep is awake and the things she does, she does for real, although moving in a reality she perceives in a transfigured way.
On Thessia Kai Leng steals the data from Shepard and gives them to TIM, who is later teleported inside the Crucible by the Harbinger.
There the Harbinger tries to convince him to choose 'Synthesis' but he fails since TIM chooses Control.
But he's indoctrinated and he can't control nothing, i

"Someone should learn how to drive," Garrus Vakarian thought shaking his head while he investigated the damaged Mako in the cargo hold of the Normandy. He held a great deal of respect toward Commander Shepard, but her driving wasto put it mildlyreckless. Mako was designed to be used in extreme conditions, but at times he thought that Shepard was asking too much from the vehicle and it was his job to fix anything her driving broke. "Next time she comes around, I'll tell her to stop driving like mad, I sure will," Garrus thought.
"Hi there," Shepard's voice jarred him out from his thoughts. "How's she looking?"
Garrus started to turn to face herhe fully intended to speak his mind about the matterbut she was standing much closer than he had expected and for a reason he couldn't understand her hand, which was resting right next to his, gave him a pause. He had never really paid any attention to her hands be

The hum of the engines hadn't bothered him before Donnelly and his crew installed the silly torque compensator (which was entirely unnecessary to begin with), into the guiding of the starboard cannon. Either there was a loose panel on the compensator, or the tech team didn't return the original panels in proper positions, and now there was a sickening resonance with one of the lower frequencies of the mass effect drive.
Garrus had demanded that the engineering crew come back and reassemble the entire thing, but Donnelly wouldn't hear of it. Literally. Garrus brought him in and instructed him what to listen to, and where to put his hand in order to feel the vibration. In the end, he even produced the frequency analysis of the entire spectrum of ac

On her first night together with Garrus, Shepard had been mildly concerned about the talons that she knew turians possessed. She trusted Garrus with all of her heart and knew that he never intentionally harm her, but there was that instinctual distrust of sharp claws near her softer human flesh. Of course she had been thinking of entirely different things by the time that evening reached the stage where his gloves came off, and then she didn't' have the luxury to think about minor details until after they had blow the Collector base to bits.
Being under house arrest had given her more than enough time to think, and Garrus was one of the happy memories she had she to stave on the crushing boredom. One of the questions those memories brought up was if turian anatomy charts and Alliance descriptions of turian talons as 'vicious natural weapons' were overly exaggerated or if Garrus had blunted his just for her.

"These are delicious, some of the best I've ever had," Shepard said, popping another crunchy cricket into her mouth.
"I can't even watch you eat those. I've seen a lot of awful things in my life, Shepard, but this is coming pretty close to the top of the list. They're creepy." Garrus winced, as she pulled another out of her bag of dried crickets, biting half of it off and savoring it before tossing the rest into her mouth. "And huge. And disgusting. And I can't stand that sound."
"What, you don't have insects on Palaven? I would have thought chitinous insects would be everywhere."
"Insects, yeah, but they definitely aren't edible."
She dug through her bag to find the largest cricket she could and held it up to her face, inspecting it thoroughly. "Look," she said, nudging him with her elbow. "This one almost looks like you." Shepard held the cri

The captain's quarters are far off from the engineering deck, but I can still hear the hum of the engines if I shut the music off and listen to the quiet. Most nights, it's enough to get me to sleep.
I'll lay back and watch the stars crawl by through the skylight, or watch the fish flit around in their tanks. Slowly, it becomes harder and harder to keep my eyes open. I'll roll over so the glow of the fish tank doesn't penetrate the darkness behind my closed eyes as I drift off to sleep.
The darkness is overwhelming. If I squint really, really hard I can just barely make out the pinpricks of distant stars. But it's so hard to keep my eyes open. I'm cold. Freezing cold, so cold I feel like my bones will implode and my skin will tear as it shrivels and tightens and I open my mouth to scream.

I rarely, if ever, get sick, which I consider a lucky combination of Dr. Chakwas' slightly-intrusive care and my own robust immune system. I have been exposed to dangerous viruses and bacteria for years in the heat of combat and hardly contracted a sniffle.
The last few days, however, I had been crippled with severe migraines, and I'd had just about enough. Dr. Chakwas had done all she could, yet they persisted. It was she who suggested I seek the migraine guru on the ship, and with some chagrin and great hope I made my way down to the observation deck.
Kaidan and I were still a bit unsettled around each other; our smiles a little forced, our laughter a little loud. We were still trying to figure out how to be friends, and I dreaded making him feel obliged.
I needn't have worried. His greeting was awkward, but he immediately relaxed and went into a delightful soldier-friend mode when I slumped against him on the couch, clutch

It was simply right that the two of them were together againshe missed all of her friends from the previous Normandy, but more than others she had missed Garrus. The turian had not said so, but she thought that maybe he had missed her too, at least a little.

During the talk Garrus had noticed that Shepard's heart was not in the meeting and guessed that she was still musing on the horrible things Ashley Williams had said to her. I can cut the wire
and free the common truth of night.
It'll serve you well to prepare yourself
for the fall of the incandescent storm.
The torrents will drown out the sun,
the winds will howl as if you didn't matter,
and if you're not down when it hits,
then you'll be blasted down.
You'll find yourself trapped
right beneath the sky
as Paradise itself collapses
and rains burning fractals
upon the innocents around you.
And the mosaic that will form
from the fire,
and the cobalt,
and the struggle,

And in your last, dire moments
you might think to wonder "Why?"
but the answer will have escaped you,
escaped all of us.
So grab on to someone
who means something to you,
and find the strength to watch the horizon.
Aim a fist at the sky,
and shout "Carry on!"

Chapter 48 – The dream
“Saren’s hiding something,” Garrus heard his own voice speaking as the world around him slowly came into hazy focus. “Give me more time. Stall them.”
He was standing on the Citadel, near the podium where the Council conducted its official meetings. The waterfall behind his back was flowing as always before, but it was eerily silent and his voice echoed strangely.
“Stall the Council? Don’t be ridiculous,” executor Pallin’s voice said, but Garrus noticed that however he strained his eyes, he couldn't bring the other turian's face into proper focus. “Your investigation is over, Garrus.”
There was finality in executor Pallin's voice and Garrus knew that trying to talk sense into him was about equal with talking to a wall: useless waste of time. But Garrus knew Saren was a traitor, the rogue Spectre had allied himself with the Sovereign—a Reaper, terrifying machine creature

Who are You? Ch. 8Almost two weeks had passed since the night on the Citadel, and mostly Garrus had kept to himself. He hadn't been put on the team for missions in that time either. "You need to clear your head and think about what we talked about," Shepard had said once Garrus came back to the Nromandy, and he figured he owed her to accept her judgment without question. When the reports of blackouts in batarian space reached him, Garrus knew at once what was happening. He had been waiting for something like this for months. The Reapers were coming. He’d even made the effort to be polite for once. Now was not the time to antagonize them, as satisfying as that would have been to rub an ‘I told you so’ into their faces. Garrus was back in the main battery after he had taken a shower and cleaned his armour from the dirt it had gathered on Korlus. He had taken a tray of food with him when he passed through the mess hallhe was still not comfortable around the Cerberus crewmembers and preferred to eat alone. He had just finished his meal when the door slid open and Shepard walked in.
She looked tired and Garrus could see she was still clearly disappointed to the results of their two previous missions. They had gotten Jackwho had proved herself as valuable member of the teambut lost Purgatory with hundreds of people dying and a lot of worst criminals being released all over the galaxy again. Then they had found Okeer, only to see him die from poison, but gained a canned krogan, who they knew next to nothing about.
In short, Garrus understood why Shepard was disappointed.
