Bullfinch commission ... happy holidays, everyone!

Width: 7cm
Height: 10 cm
Depth: 6 cm

CD shards (over 30 CDs used)
Wire mesh frame
Hot glue
Gold paint
1 week work time

I use kitchen scissors to cut the shapes I need out of the CDs, then arrange each shard by colour and size. I then hot glue those shards one-by-one to a wire mesh frame to create a natural feather pattern. They usually take a week to make, maybe longer depending on how motivated I am to get them done!

Hi guys,

So I've avoided uploading this one for a while. This is the biggest thing I've ever made a dragon with a 3 metre wing span, designed to be suspended in a very large room.

It currently lives in Baltimore USA, in the brand new Ripleys Believe It Or Not! museum. The reason I haven't shared it was because I was waiting for some GOOD photos of it suspended to come through. The best I have of it hanging is the shot in the top right hand corner of this montage. The other photos were taken at home when it was lying on it's back, I don't have a support beam strong enough to hold its weight, so I didn't suspend it.

3 months to finish
Over 1000 cut up CDs and DVDs for the scales/feathers
3 metre wingspan
Hot glue
Silver spray paint
Light bulbs for eyes (they don't light up)
Wire mesh frame with a PVC pipe back bone

What an epicly silly project. Ouch, my hands.

I use kitchen scissors to cut the shapes I need out of the CDs, then arrange each shard by colour and size. I then hot glue those shards one-by-one to a wire mesh frame to create a natural fur pattern. They usually take a week to make, maybe longer depending on how motivated I am to get them done!

Some people are curious about what's on the CDs/DVDs that I cut up to make these sculptures. This is what's on the discs I used to make this one:

Family Guy: Season 7
The Simpsons: Seasons 20 & 19
Death at a Funeral
Westernex product catalogues

Note: The TV series are crappy, knock-off copies from Indonesia, they always come on cool, golden discs.

I really like this guy! He's stalking fish in my pond, the cheeky bird.

1 weeks work (approximately 40 hours)

I then hot glue those shards one-by-one to a wire mesh frame (that I shape by hand) to create a natural feather pattern. In answer to some common questions:

These sculptures aren't as sharp as they look they're only dangerous if you eat them.

I hardly cut myself, but I do burn myself A LOT.

Always open for commissions! Drop me a note.

My second humming bird made as a commission. This one is a little more dynamic than my first one: [link] definitely a little less elegant, but I find it to be more exciting to look at. This one also comes with a stand.

Made from:

Wire mesh armature
CD shards (purple and green)
Hot glue
Hair clip (beak)
Gold paint
