Carry me to FreedomCarry me to Freedom
There was a bird and a bee
Sitting way high up in the tree
And the bird wanted to know what
The bee had a stinger for
“One day I will give my life for you.”
Said the bee
And, uncomfortable, the bird didn’t ask anything more.
So the bird and the bee
Grew up and went to high school
And passed notes in class
And held hands under the table in study hall
And the bee wanted to know what
The bird had wings for
“One day I will carry you to freedom.”
Said the bird
And, uncomfortable, the bee didn’t ask anything more.
So the bird and the bee
Graduated and went to different colleges
And exchanged emails on weekends
And cards on birthdays
And the bird had a boyfriend named James
And the bee wanted to know
If James had a job
“He is a good man,”
Said the bird
And, disappointed, the bee stopped returning her calls.
So the bird and James
Got married and moved to the city
And they had a few kids
And James worked long hou

Watch me as I break
And all those glittering pieces,
A new girl it will make
A mosaic tiled reincarnation
Of who I used to be
But still merely fragments
Of a once solid me
So go ahead and break me
Watch me as I shatter
I will never be the same person
But when has that ever mattered?
And when has keeping me whole
Ever meant anything to you
You would just as soon break me
As you would grab the glue
You can't stick me back together
I wouldn't want you to try
Because I will break again anyway
The next time you make me cry.

Open my throat, ear to ear
I will be your Savior.
Because I love you,
I will, with eagerness, allow
That under your hand,
My sister, my brother,
My son, my daughter,
My father in his divinity and
My mother in her virginity:
My back be broken
My tongue twisted
My knees clubbed
Please, if your needs require,
Amputate what you will.
Pour libations of my blood
To preserve your Sanctity,
Consume my body, your communion,
I will be your human sacrifice.
If God asks what you have done
Tell him it was my will
To commit assisted suicide
At your hand, for your salvation.
You needed someone to wash your hands,
To purify your sins,
And there I was with open arms,
Lead by hoof and hand to slaughter.
Place upon me a crown of thorns
Open my throat, ear to ear

I'm done believing that
Can complete me.
I'm not a jigsaw puzzle
And you aren't my missing piece.
Loving you is like playing
A game of minesweeper
And my record on that game is like
99 losses to 1 success.
Your personality is a time bomb
And I don't have steady hand.
We've been together
A year now passed
But you would never take the time
To read this poem,
And that's how I know it's safe to write.
I love you, but man,
I wish I never armed you
With the hammer and scissors
You use to break and cut away
The person I used to be
When you're angry because
I didn't do enough,
Wasn't enough for you.
And baby I love you,
But I won't be crying over you anymore.

It feels like I'm standing still.
Not getting anywhere.
The sky presses a ruddy,
Down on my temple,
and says "walk".
The ground below me
presses a smooth,
Verdant palm on my

So I don't know whether
Or if I chose between the two
It would be because
It is what I wanted to do
It is what I was told to do.

Your scent settles into my clothes
Like a house settling into its foundation,
‘It belongs,’ I think to myself, ‘he belongs,’
Your cologne, your humanity, it settles with me,
And though the floor boards may creak
Under the weight and pressure of our foot falls
And though there is a slight draft
To chill us in the winter months
This house we built on memories
Is the only house I want to live in.
I want to camp out in
This house we built together
The windows we framed with wishes,
The walls we built to keep out our fears,
And I want to curl up on the
Bare baseboard of our memories,
I want to laugh about the good times,
And cry about the hard times,
I want to chase the night away with you,
I want to share my world with you.
I want to build a life together,
Starting with one brick,
Starting with one dream,
And maybe a can of paint
And a bottle of Windex,
So that our life will always
Be full of color,
And so that the w

To form foreign sentiments,
I feel like I'm telling a lie, and
The constant pressure to please
Consecrates my subservience to you
In your arms I forget all
Of my rights to opinion
In your clutch I forget I
Have any rights at all.
Your strong arm
Rips out my voice box,
Blots out independent thought,
Your rules dampen
The fires of revolution
And your undying love
Brings me to my knees,
In constant service,
I am yours:
My country, 'tis of thee,
Damned land of poverty,
Of thee I sing.

You are such a saint,
Amongst your cathedral of blasphemies,
Beside your mass of sinners,
Preaching the word of a God to be feared,
Rather than overlooked.
What does that do for you?
Are you cleansed by a pastor’s ceremony?
Do you reach salvation by praying for forgiveness,
Rather than living without anything
That requires His hallowed pardon?
Lord, your children must be misguided,
Or they would remain on the path.
None are sinless, but that requires some clemency,
Sometimes it is expected.
Walking between the dark aisles,
Your children bow their heads,
‘Forgive me father, for I have sinned’
And what a sin it was- your chalky words
Pass through their consciousness,
Meaning absent for the moment.
Virtuous, they cry ‘Yes! I have seen my God!
What a wonderful God he was,’
For all that you’ve done, you pray,
And you are forgiven…
How do you coax them out those doors
Their heads are filled with lies…

She's wearing a sundress, laughing,
As she tosses hazel locks to the wind.
The sunglasses paint a perfect reflection;
The lake shimmering beyond the maples,
And the sunset to where she looks.
I can see this spirit so clearly,
Leaning on the trunk of a tree and sighing.
Through my wretched tears I reach,
Convinced that my touch shall return her.
As I blink away the shining diamonds,
The breeze lifts my love, my girl,
And bears her like mist to the horizon.
My hand swipes at the empty space,
And my scarred heart breaks anew.
Someone told me that she's in a better place,
Somewhere warm, and safe.
But have to wonder, I have to ask,
Where am I without her?

When I thought I had forgotten even your name,
When you had not crossed my mind for
Months on end,
Suddenly it's like I was with you
Yes I know you were bad for me
And that is why I left
But people with sick minds
Don't give up until their body is poisoned too.
You were bad medicine
You were a malignant cell
You were a parasitic psycho-maniac
But you were loved.

And this living room so cold
When did you take my heart
And this love start to take hold
From the moment that we met
Nothing'd ever felt so right
So since I've stopped fearing love
I've wanted you with all my might
I've never smiled so big
Or felt so many butterflies
I'd never believed in forever
'Til you took me by surprise
This roller coaster's worth it
'Cause I can finally call you mine
The seconds you say you love me
Are the ones that really shine
I'd give you my life and soul
To prove to you I'll stay
I never want to leave your mind
So I'll never go away
I've never been like the others
And I never want to be
Because nothing could be better
Than having you love me
Now I look forward to the future
Like no one else could make me do
Because the only future I want
Is the one where I'm with you.

Heart and hand
Blood and belly
There would be no other greater pleasure
Than to watch it swell with child
And to bring into this world
Our son or daughter
To take to her tiny mouth
Breast heavy with the milk of life
And count his little fingers
And number his pretty toes
I bring to you my body
Your vessel for our love
Fill it with what you will
For of mothers and lovers
There is not one without the other.
The Sympathetic PoetThe Sympathetic PoetThe Sympathetic Poet2 years ago in Free Verse More Like This
In the house of poetry nothing remains except that which was written with blood to be listened to by blood
And we bleed together,
Streams that run together
In our bitter suicide of the mind.
Baring scarred flesh to be re-scarred,
Thin lines across the wrists
And main arteries
Where confessions were made.
Widen my smile,
Ear to ear,
And let it all trickle down.
We bathe in each other’s sorrow
And drink from the lips of someone else’s heart.
If I lean in to kiss you, don’t mind
The putridity of my breath,
Rotten from spilling lies,
Made sweet again
From confessions on a lonely stage,
Click-clacks of snapped fingers say
“I feel you, I feel you”
And all you can say is
“You don’t feel anything!”
These words cannot express the truths
On the tip of my tongue.
There are no words that can grasp
The depth of my torture,
No soliloquy that I make can encompass
The pleasures and pains and pinpricks
I have experienced.

Look in the sky
Because the moon
It smiles like
The Cheshire cat
In a rendition
Of Alice’s story.
It is lunatic,
A little bit out
Where ever there is.
He smiles sinisterly,
The moon with its grin.
He’s watching and
What does he want?
All of us.
He is so hungry,
And he knows the truth,
In the end
We all go…
And he’ll be waiting.

Friendly words whisper to friendly ears,

Begging the heart to make a mistake.
Only will remains, struggling,
Just to persevere.

Wondering why this would happen
Hoping things would change
You never asked; you accepted
You never wondered; you just knew
You didn't just hope; you changed things
And we were changed by you
We learned things we never would've known
Had you never existed
You taught us to embrace the moment
To accept the past
To make now better
And always believe that tomorrow could be great.
You lived each day to the fullest
While we waited around for life to happen
You made life happen
You never waited
Why did you go?
It was time to go
You knew that
And yet we always knew
That we would always remember
And refuse to let people forget
You happened for a reason
So now can become better
And tomorrow can become great.
