In defense of headdresses.Alright. I've seen (and responded to) the recent rant by :iconCabinetCuriosities: regarding headdresses (among other things, most of which I agreed with, some of which I didn't, but none of which struck me as disrespectful), and I saw the harassment that another user got over her rare pelt that she was going to headdress, and I've seen other people snark about headdresses for various reasons. And I'd like to make a few points. In defense of headdresses.5 months ago in Personal More Like This
First of all, it's none of anyone's business what a person does with a hide they have, whether that's make it into a headdress or a soft mount or a blanket or a wall hanger or something for their cat to sleep on. Traditional taxidermy is not inherently more respectful to the animal than headdressing. They can be respectful for different reasons, but ultimately it comes down to the individual person and their approach. And since not a single one of you is sitting here in my living room, watching my work, and none of you are in my head any further than my writing l
Saw This on Tumblr: About Fur FarmingSo saw this on Tumblr this morning...after the recent circulation of a new PETA video I think this is a nice thing to reference back to (in case you haven't seen it, there's a new PETA video out on Youtube. They have some new footage of a fur farm that honestly isn't too bad, but they show a fox being killed via electrocution and don't explain a damn thing so of course people who don't understand what's going on -like not knowing what a CATCH POLE is- assume the worst given the context. They also littered it with their usual lies, like animals being skinned alive -despite showing one being killed before skinning....-, have a clip of that video, and say this is how all fur farms operate. Oh, and that most fur comes from China, not most PROCESSED fur comes from China -big difference!-. Go ahead, look for the video. I've been having fun dispelling the rumors and answering people's questions about it on my Facebook home page.)Saw This on Tumblr: About Fur Farming3 months ago in Personal More Like This

First off, before I begin my rant, A couple of people got together and made :iconranchfoxes: Keep in mind, it's only for foxes in which you KNOW the origins are ranched (so chances are any stoles you have can go into that group). They don't accept naturally occuring variations (Red, Cross, Silver) Unless they KNOW it was ranched and where it came from.
Now, onto my ranting. I'll be calling out some people (not any of you, though X3)
I DO NOT want you going over to these people's pages and talk to them. Is that clear? Good!
It seems every day now we're getting more wolfaboos/foxaboos/animalaboos bitching and moaning about taxidermy. If it's not about the fact that "OMFG UR A MURDERER" or "That's disgusting!" Especially since the main page is taking the most popular from EVERY category, giving other categories more exposure. This could be good or bad. Good because others can appreciate the hard work and such that people do to bring
I don't understand (Banter about stuff)I don't get how kids these days are willing to pay $300 mounting fees for some kid to make them a plush who has never gone to taxischool and has only done one mount, doesn't use top of the line products fair said price (ahem. Plastic eyes versus tohickon. Vandyke plastic eyes that are $6 a pair and claim they're paying $20 for high grade eyes. Whereas tohickons are GLASS and $17 a pair... Being the staple of this point) then piss and moan on how their mounts look like shit.I don't understand (Banter about stuff)3 months ago in Personal More Like This
Yet, legitimate taxidermists, who have been to school, use the best of the best products and charge LESS than these backyard taxidermists, get little to no commissions, get tire kickers up the ass and are often schluffed to the side, and very few people acknowledge their work, even when commission slots have been open for months. Why I don't know.
I just really don't anymore. And it irks me when I see people comment that they're strapped for cash on one of the legit taxidermist's pages, yet I see them on taxinet and

Ranchers and the foxes derp~50% sarcasm 50% truth! ~Ranchers and the foxes derp2 months ago in Personal More Like This
Since I see a lot of people who ask this sorta stuff I am making a little journal to spout off some tips and nuggets of knowledge to people not in the know how with ranch foxes.
-First rule of ranch foxes, never discuss ranchers of ranch foxes. This means. If you don't know a breeder. Don't ask. I know a lot of people know Dave. But there are plenty of other breeders too who don't use the internet to sell stock.
Why don't people want to share breeders? There are many reasons such as; breeders only take so much clientele and don't like word being spread around about them, DA kids can be too flaky and say they want something and back out, wasting their time... The list goes on and on, some breeders I know even screen potential buyers.
But if a person is not disclosing a name of a breeder, don't ask them, I know a good amount of my friends as well as myself who DO know other breeders but we just don't want to share. Just because we don't want breeders getting

Published: Thursday, February 5, 2009 - 15:15 in Biology & Nature
Taken from: http://esciencenews.com/articles/2009/02/05/biologists.solve.mystery.black.wolves
Why do nearly half of North American wolves have black coats while European wolves are overwhelmingly gray or white? The surprising answer, according to teams of biologists and molecular geneticists from Stanford University, UCLA, Sweden, Canada and Italy, is that the black coats are the result of historical matings between black dogs and wild gray wolves. The research, federally funded by the National Science Foundation, appears Feb. 5 in the online edition of the journal Science and will be published later in the journal's print edition.
The scientists used molecular genetic techniques to analyze DNA sequences from 150 wolves, about half of them black, in Yellowstone National Park, which covers parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho
Pelt As Stiff As Cardboard?????Okay, so I got my wolf cub, Rook is the mail today, and I could not be more happy with him, so I was getting ready to take photos, and thought I'd use my Male Coyote, House as a size ref to show just how small Rook really is, and a few weeks ago I wiped House's fur down with dawn and water to help degrease him a bit because he was greasy to the touch, and I hung him to dry and when he was mostly dry I went and laid him on my dresser and haven't touched him until today. Well his leather is as stiff as cardboard! D= I don't know what happened! I didn't even get his leather that wet! Maybe a little damp and a few places wet when I was wiping but he's totally stiff now!Pelt As Stiff As Cardboard?????4 months ago in Personal More Like This
What can I do? I don't want him stiff like this! Plus he needs another Dawn bath, but now I'm afraid to do it, and I was going to wash Wicca the same way too, but now I'm scared to do it! Dx
Please help? I did exactly what someone told me and they did the same thing to their pelts and they didn't have this problem!

I'm in the "it's all art" camp myself. Trad taxidermy, soft mounts, headdresses, little pouches made of hide and beads, curio vials, curiosity cabinets, etc.—all these can be someone's expression of aesthetic values, beauty, and the like. I'm not going to sit around and say that one medium is inherently better than another just because I have personal preferences. Yes, some artists are better than others, and yes, some don't take criticism as well as other do (but then again some people don't know the fine art of how to offer truly constructive criticism as opposed to blaring their emotions at someone while claiming to be "helpful").
Plus people have a tendency to get all up in each other's business, which is silly IMO. If you have a pelt in your possession and it belongs to you, it's not my place to say what you should or shouldn't do with it. Newbie soft mount artist start
Donations needed for SICK geckos!Okay firstly I want to say that I HATE asking for donations, I really, really do. But today something happened and we're desperate!Donations needed for SICK geckos!2 months ago in Personal More Like This
So, today we were contacted by a nice guy who was looking for a home for two young (approx. 8 months) leopard geckos because his children are no longer interested, as they have a new puppy. He gave them us for free and since we have two other girls we accepted. We honestly believe he had NO IDEA how sick they are.
However, when we inspected the geckos (after he had left), we noticed a variety of problems. They are both very undernourished, have calcium deficiency, and both their stomachs are completely impacted with sand. The guy mentioned they had been off their crickets too, no wonder!
One of them is worse than the other, his bones are deformed, and his stomach was rock hard with sand when he came in. The other gecko has a prolapsed cloaca, and is also impacted, though she seems a little better than the little boy.
They are only

Cruelty Free and MeOk... After answering a half dozen emails asking if my products are "Cruelty Free" I feel I need to voice my opinion.Cruelty Free and Me7 months ago in Personal More Like This
This "rage" of wildlife products has poked a stick in many peoples Ideals.. But they have begun to make it what they want... And need to see to make it "OK".
First of all...
To me " Cruelty free" means Anything that was either Ethically, humanely or naturally taken or Something that was cast off by the animal naturally(Shed antlers and Feathers).
To most people I've spoken to it means Anything that was Cast off by the animal or died of "Natural Causes" (Which oddly enough often includes Roadkills)
Completely ignoring the LEGAL implications of Picking up dead Wildlife in many states (Including WA) I just want to say a few things... To make you think...
I've seen literally Hundreds of things DIE. Killed my share, Seen it done a host of ways , on a host of species, with a host of methods, see things die by Illness, the aftermath of injury, accidents, starvation, and othe

I shop there ALL the time, I havnt had any other experience with Research, Jonas, Joe Coombs (besides eyes), or McKenzie directly, (Since they supply VDs) and I just HAD it with their shipping.
When I ordered the bear form, It was 5 lbs and cost me $50 to ship. Well I called them!
I had an order to place and i had a gift card that could only be called in. And I spoke to them about it. And what I learned was this:
If you live near PA, (Im in NY) then you need to call MCKENZIE directly and ASK if they have anything in stock in their PA warehouse. Because they wont charge a shit ton for shipping that way. Also, ask them to ship Parcel post if they can, its much cheaper. The people there are VERY nice.
If you live near South Dakota, then call VAN DYKES, and ask for anything from the SD warehouse and it wont cost you much, same with Parcel post and anything like that.

-I am sick as fuck still

Two steps in Goodwill:
"Uh miss you can't come in here with a dog"
I ask "Why? He's not even alive."
She shoots me a dirty look and tells me "I don't care. Get out" and while I was walking back to the door I heard her say something outlandishly immature like "Freak" or something. So. I turned around and told her "Fuck you" and walked out.
So. Here I am. Stuck o

There has recently been a new wave of people who think taxidermy is all about soft mounting, and otherwise have no goddamn idea about it. Yeah yeah, I know a bunch of you do soft mounting because you enjoy it, but before you hop on my ass hear me out. First, :iconHellBoundPromises: warned me a shitstorm was imminent. She told me a certain rather popular person had come to Deviantart wanting to try taxidermy. This person brought with them a bunch of fans who waited eagerly for his/her work. But now instead of having people who are eager to learn from the vets on here, and other proper sources like taxi.net, these people have turned what we love into a fucking joke and made dA even less serious than it was before.

Yes, African wild dogs are predators. So last week a two year old boy was killed by a pack of African wild dogs at the Pittsburgh Zoo after his mother dangled him over the safety barrier and accidentally dropped him into their enclosure http://www.chron.com/news/us/article/Pa-zoo-Wild-dogs-killed-boy-who-fell-in-exhibit-4008185.php . So far it looks like the dogs (other than one that was shot by a police officer) won't be euthanized, and the zoo is reopening tomorrow.Yes, African wild dogs are predators.6 months ago in Personal More Like This
This is a reminder that even animals in zoos still retain their wildness, wild dogs, in particular, stay wild when kept in a pack instead of in pairs or individually. Just because they may seem calm and safe in their enclosures doesn't mean they can't still do damage. This is why it *is* a big deal when an animal gets loose at a zoo; it's not like someone's pet cat got out of the yard.
And it's good to respect that wildness, even when the animal is contained. Zoos are the result of the wilderness being reduced so drastically that some species only survive bec

Where we stand - a short opinion :)This journal is pretty long. So if you are interested... take a little timeWhere we stand - a short opinion :)5 months ago in Personal More Like This
We are hobby taxidermists. There was no point where we said that we are professionals. There is always something to learn or to teach and we are still in the middle of this process. The main reason why we collect is in a deep connection with learning and teaching. We are both interested in biology, nature and - let's take the clicheé - animals. And we are interested since we were able to be interested in anything. Even with already knowing a lot (or little - it depends on from which side you look at it) about nature and how everything works we still have to discover a lot. And we want to discover it on our own. And with learning about it we can tell others what we know and learn from what they know. It is about seeing, touching and comparing - and giving and taking. Of course we also love the feeling of fur or the fragile or massive skulls. It is a strange s
