deviantART and Offsite Proper EtiquetteKnowing Your Laws!deviantART and Offsite Proper Etiquette2 years ago in Personal More Like This
As some of the taxidermy/pelt collectors know, there’s been a recent influx in people becoming interested in collecting wildlife parts. It’s great to see people becoming interested in taxidermy and such as it’s not an art that is well known. But lately some of the taxidermy community on here has notice way too many people are selling items here and off site that are illegal in general or illegal in their state. Collecting animal parts is not like collecting baseball cards or coins, there are LAWS to them. A lot of members on deviantART don’t seem to get how serious it is if you are caught illegally selling animal parts. We’re talking about $1,000+ fines and even jail time. The federal officers don’t care if you didn’t know the laws or if you’re a kid, your still breaking the law and they will punish you. I always tell new people

Taxidermy is a lot like a lotta things...Kumofucius says...Taxidermy is a lot like a lotta things...9 months ago in Personal More Like This
-Taxidermy is a lot like pokemon cards. Some things are common, some are rare. Some get traded around a lot, and... you gotta get them all
-Taxidermy is a lot like waiting for a baby to be born; takes about 9 months, you KINDA have an idea what its gonna look like and it is a big investment.
-Taxidermy is a lot like being in a drug deal, most of it is done behind closed doors and not many people know what is going on.
-The taxidermy community is a lot like high school, there are cliques and usually they pick at eachother.
-The taxidermy community is a lot like the mob, theres high rank folk, the family and there is of course lots of high end items being pushed around and lots of money going through peoples hands.
-The taxidermy community is a lot like swimming in a shark tank with a seal carcass strapped to you, if someone wants something you have, they will stalk you and chase you down LOL
Yep. Just lol. Had to make a new journal.

US 'Exporters'For those who are exporting wildlife items from the U.S without the proper permits, licensing and paperwork... shame on you.US 'Exporters'5 months ago in Personal More Like This
For those who are using someone to export wildlife items to you from the U.S... PLEASE make sure your exporter is 100% legal and knowledgeable of the process!!!!! Request documentation, proof... anything. DO NOT GO BY JUST WORD OF MOUTH. If your 'exporter' cannot provide proof, DO NOT USE THEM. Being ignorant just makes you part of the problem.
I know of at LEAST one person on here in the US who exports pelts and mounts illegally to customers or 'friends' overseas. To that person, and any others who are secretly shipping wildlife overseas, I HOPE it bites you in the ass. I HOPE you get fined. What you're doing is smuggling, and you deserve the consequences.
To those who ARE exporting legally with all the proper paperwork, licensing, etc... Rock on. Much respect over here.
Rant: Ignorance is Disaster, Not BlissWell, I've gone and done it again and talked to people I shouldn't, lol. All good now, I got a bawwlock so that settles that. One thing leaves a bitter taste in my mouth though (that's besides blatant lies, misinformation, and a lack of wanting to learn anyhow....that one still perplexes me, how people can choose to ignore or downright deny truthful information being given to them....I would want to learn!). It ties back to the ignorance, actually. Why do people choose to live life with their blinders on? As nice as that self-protection may be sometimes, I just don't understand how you can kick and scream and cry about one thing, but keep your blinders in tact when it comes to your own actions.Rant: Ignorance is Disaster, Not Bliss2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Let's break this down; so fur is easy to remove from your life, yeah? Yeah, it is, most of us don't need it to survive these days. So, it's easy for people to go anti-fur; hey, just don't buy fur! OK, DONE! WOO, FEEL SO MUCH BETTER ABOUT MYSELF, LOOK AT ALL OF THESE ANIMALS I'M SAVING!! It's kin
Get an Art Education Without Expensive Art SchoolsAs much as I love my school, Academy of Art University, it's not necessary to attend a special art school in order to learn about art. Because of the internet, there are plenty of resources available for those who are self-motivated and eager to learn.Get an Art Education Without Expensive Art Schools1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I'll start with some of the cheapest resources, ending with more expensive ones:
1. Blogs, podcasts and livestreams. Most professional artists keep blogs, and these things are free treasure troves of information. The best blogs don't only show off art, they also give tips about the business of art and introduce you to new resources. Try starting with Muddy Colors, a super informative blog run by several professional painters and sculptors: http://muddycolors.blogspot.com/ For podcasts, check out Chris Oatley's artcast: http://chrisoatley.com/category/podcasts/ Also check out the Awesome Horse Studios livestream: http://www.awesomehorsestudios.com/

Mold on peltsAlright guys Tis the season for this problem and its bit me in the ass this morning.Mold on pelts1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Anyone in humid climates might have experienced this but youCAN VERY EASILY get mold on your pelts. It's either green or white, green is more surface mold and the white almost looks like cotton candy.
Do not freak out if you see this. It'a fixable.
Firstly to prevent this just don't do anything in a basement or garage. Don't. It gets wet and humid. And DO NOT REHYDRATE PELTS AND LEAVE THEM!!! If you forget about them this happens. Badly. And Quick.
So if you see mold what do you do? On a REHYDRATED PELT:
Grab a bucket and stick whatever part is infected in the bucket. Then just dump vinegar in it. Yep just white vinegar.
Let it soak for an hour and wash it off. Then stick it in a bucket with warm water and two cap full of DAWN/LYSOL CONCENTRATE. not dish soap. It comes in a small bottle and its purple. just mix it and let it sit.
After that scrub off any green and ri
Cinder the Yukon Wolf. (More Photos!)As you can see, I've decided on a name- Cinder!Cinder the Yukon Wolf. (More Photos!)2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
It came to me while I was holding her, and while the other names had been like a passing thought, this one went through my head over and over again like a mantra. It seems to fit her anyway, seeing as cinders tend to be dark, but many times are light or light on the edges.
I had wanted a name more… like how Vitani, Nuka, and Kovu are. Fancy-sounding, instead of something like this, but she practically chose the name for herself and I love that. :)
I still cannot get over how big she is!
Comparisons of some of my pelts. From left to right on that top left picture:
Nuka the (assumed) male whitemark/platinum fox (wallhanger)
-Received in a trade with Zhon from deviantART, April 2012.
Vitani the (assumed) female arctic marble fox (wallhanger)
-Purchased at a fur market in Upper Michigan… she is OLD.
Cinder the female Yukon wolf (mountable)
-Purchased on Hide and Fur, January 2013.
Tutorial: How to machine stitch heads onto bodiesTutorial time! This is another basic tutorial that will show you how to machine stitch a plush's head onto its body. Please be aware that I can't teach anyone how to make patterns. I'm just putting together a few tips and tricks that will hopefully help someone.Tutorial: How to machine stitch heads onto bodies5 months ago in Personal More Like This
Sew your plush's body together, leaving the entire back open.
Sew your plush's head together, also leaving the back open.
Match the head to the body and pin. When making your pattern, make sure the circumference of the opening at the bottom of the head is equal to the circumference of the neck opening of the plush body.
Sew a straight line from one end to the other.
The plush's head is now attached!
You should now have a plush with the entire back open! All you have to do now is finish it!

Art doll FAQArt doll FAQ1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I seem to be getting a lot of the same questions about my art dolls, so I've decided to make an FAQ.
Please read my FAQ page before asking any questions.
WILL YOU MAKE AN ART DOLL TUTORIAL?
I may make one in the future, as of right now I am pretty busy with my day job and making art dolls so it's not really on my high priority list. I'm also not sure if I want to give away my trade secrets, it's what makes my dolls unique.
How did you learn to make art dolls?
I spent a lot of time researching about doll making and plushie making, you can find a lot of information on Google and YouTube. I experimented A LOT, I experimented with different style and techniques until I found one that worked for me. I think for an artist, you need to have your own way of making art - it gives your work it's own signature style.
What material do you sculpt with?
I sculpt with Super Sculpey, I find that this

Saw This on Tumblr: About Fur FarmingSo saw this on Tumblr this morning...after the recent circulation of a new PETA video I think this is a nice thing to reference back to (in case you haven't seen it, there's a new PETA video out on Youtube. They have some new footage of a fur farm that honestly isn't too bad, but they show a fox being killed via electrocution and don't explain a damn thing so of course people who don't understand what's going on -like not knowing what a CATCH POLE is- assume the worst given the context. They also littered it with their usual lies, like animals being skinned alive -despite showing one being killed before skinning....-, have a clip of that video, and say this is how all fur farms operate. Oh, and that most fur comes from China, not most PROCESSED fur comes from China -big difference!-. Go ahead, look for the video. I've been having fun dispelling the rumors and answering people's questions about it on my Facebook home page.)Saw This on Tumblr: About Fur Farming1 year ago in Personal More Like This
