The Enduring Enigma of CollageFebruary 21, 2013/by $techgnoticThe Enduring Enigma of Collage3 months ago in deviantART Blog More Like This
Collage is one of those art forms that immediately sets off heated debate about our most fundamental ideas and visceral feelings about the very essence of art itself.
Turn of the century troublemakers Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso began enhancing their paintings with glued on bits of cut out fabric and other materials, thus neatly blurring the line between the art categories of painting and sculpture. They shifted the emphasis or “meaning” of their painted images beyond an attempted interpretation of the painted “text” to thinking about the artists’ “process” – something wholly separate from the paintings themselves.
And with that a whole new Rubic’s Cube of basic questions about art was opened up:
Is an assemblage of “found” junk

We want to especially thank an elite core of Odyssey II writers:
Those deviants truly embodying the spirit of the project by continuing to create and submit next chapters – no matter the story’s refusal to go along with their proposed direction. The zeitgeist is a powerful force, but the artist must know when to sail against the been-there-done-that. And our writers, artists and poets have been doing that week after week. So many artists and writers continue to send in wonderful material week after week.
We have decided to extend the writing deadline for the last chapter to December 31 and we're

I am bringing your attention to a documentary, Beauty is Embarrassing, that
deeply inspired me after a screening last week. The life wisdom and positive
philosophy unfolding over a lifetime of living as an artist was deeply motivating.
I invited Wayne White, the subject of this documentary, to join deviantART afterwards.
I thought this would be something you would enjoy no matter where you might be at
on your own personal journey as an artist. While watching this I was also reminded
of the heartfelt explanations by many artists of what it means to choose the life of an Artist.

I have never found a companion who was so companionable as solitude.
Henry David Thoreau
I always thought Thoreau’s comment was simply a word game— ultimately not of much value and false at its core. A Valentines Day in solitude should mean being all alone and alone means being unhappy, pure and simple. Still, it will turn out in life that the most alone we can feel is ironically in the crush of family and friends and even in the embrace of one’s Valentines Day companion— but lost and unfulfilled in one’s dreams and visions.

I suppose one of the most intriguing news stories the past few weeks has been the announcement by some Restaurants in the USA that they will be banning food Photography! Some claim that it's because of the flashes going off in restaurants and spoiling the mood for other customers. Others are angry that some professional photographers are making money or getting a name for themselves by sharing images of food that someone else has 'arranged.' And then there are the few that don't like the instagram snaps floating around that don't show their dishes in the best light. But what are your thoughts on the matter? One way of getting around the lack of being able to take a photo of your dinner is that some establishments are going to allow g

A magic of effective art can be a drawing that appears to be a movie still, clipped from a film narrative, evoking a powerful sense of storytelling— and the viewer wants to know the rest of the story. This phenomenon has recently manifested itself on deviantART— and in a big way— once again.

"No photographer is as good as the simplest camera."
~Edward Steichen
Since getting my first D-SLR, three years ago now, I have never been completely comfortable with the methods I use to transport it. With the camera came a bag, typical camera bag, over the shoulder type. But it's still not quite right. There are a wide range of camera bags out there now. Including one from deviantART - the dA Pro Camera Bag, but nothing has ever been quite what I need. The three common types of carrying a camera bag seem to be across the body, two straps on the back or even a belt. What do you use?

I've put together an article due for release next week about how you can create your own Photography studio without going to too much expense or trouble. I'm all for making the most out of tricky or limited situations to try and make something professional...butt hen I stumbled across this article and thought it was a completely genius idea - and just goes to show that your studio can literally be anywhere. A Photographer in Yeovil (UK) has set up studio in what was formerly the public toilets! As well as a great move for a photographer it puts an abandoned building, formerly considered an 'eye sore' to great use. The mental images (until you actually realise it's been reno
Infrared Photography Gallery: Your Thoughts? For some time now there have been calls from the community for an Infrared Gallery as it's becoming a popular technique and often there is confusion over where the work actually belongs. The powers that be have been listening and have decided that it would be really useful to have your feedback as to where this Gallery should go. At the moment, Infrared Photographs are spread across the Photography Galleries from Animals, Plants and Nature to Miscellaneous.Infrared Photography Gallery: Your Thoughts?9 months ago in Community Relations More Like This
What is Infrared Photography?
`gilad explained it quite succinctly over seven years ago now in this journal. Infrared Photography (or IR) shows a magical, thermal type effect of a world that, without specific filters or applications, appears quite normal. It can be achieved using a filter on specific D-SLR cameras or it can be achieved with special films in Analog. This clear technique divis

“Creativity is knowing how to hide your sources”
- Albert Einstein
I don't know about you, but Light Painting has to be really unique and awesome in order to impress me. So when I stumbled across the work of Darren Pearson aka Darren Twin - I was astounded at the creativity and simple methods used to create his conceptual photographic pieces. Darren creates LED pictures of Skeletons Skateboarding, dancing and living - exploring what the Mail Online has termed as the bare bones of our daily lives. And it really is precisely that. Darren takes the ordinary, the mundane and the normal of everyday life and lights it up by night by painting bones. Check it out for yourself. That prompted me to go searching for some of my favourite light painted pieces here
