Having made the flovely =Kyramy a Tangled inspired icon for the OC heart project, I was inspired to go on and create a larger emoticon piece capturing the lantern scene from the film in far greater detail. I started this late last night and then went on to spend a good few hours this afternoon/evening working on it to complete the piece.
At first the idea of pixelling a castle and water at night time was a little daunting, so I gave myself a helping hand and shrank down a reference image to help create the outline of the castle. Once I had the basic structure I went on to shade it in a similar way to the icon, but placing more thought and care into how different areas of the castle would light up compared to others.
Next I went on to shade the sky using colours once again based on the icon version and worked my socks off trying to come up with a style of clouds which looked natural and fitted the piece. I then added in the lanterns using several different transparency setting to help give a sensation of distance. Lastly I worked on the lower half adding in the boat and emotes along with the water and reflections (also through the use of a lot of transparency).
I'm really happy with how the final piece turned out, especially all of the clouds. There are of course areas I feel I could improve (using less transparency and fewer different colours being 2 points) but I definitely feel it's one of my best pieces so far.
Once again, many thanks to =Kyramy and *MerelyCubed for their continued support and input on the piece as it was being created <4
This is my (non-competing) entry for October's EMTC on the theme of 'Monsters'.
A couple of weeks back I decided I wanted to pixel something so naturally took a look at the EMTC for some inspiration. The first thing which came to mind was the film Monsters Inc so I decided to give it ago. It wasn't until I was 90% of the way through the background that I realised I technically can't compete in the EMTC as I'm a judge since I won the previous contest.
However, since I was liking the background I decided to finish it and submit it as I haven't made much pixel-y stuff recently. I originally aimed to get Boo in there somehow but after several failed attempts I thought it would be best to upload it and try again another time as I have another few pixel projects that I need to get around to.
I've been doing a lot of 'fan art' emoticons recently, so this time around I wanted to try and make something using an original idea. I scribed this down one evening as I was half asleep and then spent a couple of days pixelling it up. The concepts revolves around the fact that you can 'build yourself a rainbow' using coloured bricks, so I decided to draw a little emote half way through creating one.
I decided to go for a different style of sky this time to try and give the impression of clouds. I then spent several ideas messing around with the clouds to get them to look right. I'm still not totally convinced with their placement, but you can only do so many edits before you have to move on and come back at a later date.
I am always aware that the rainbow is missing one of the purple colours, but opted to use one to allow for a nice rainbow curve.
I actually made the piece a few days ago but wasn't able to upload it until it had been revealed fro day 7 on the calendar. I felt in the past that a lot of my snow related emotes had been rather cartoonish with fake looking snow and generic representation of an xmas tree, so this time I wanted to go for a more realistic effect.
I decided I wanted to set the piece at night as it would give a more Christmas-y atmosphere and I used my previous ET related deviation as reference to help get the trees in place. I then got to work adding in the details and finally added a couple of emotes to the scene.
Overall I'm proud of how this emote turned out as it actually looks better than I originally imagined. I'm equally happy that I didn't use transparency to help makes things blend so the total colour count is down to only 45 as opposed to my common 200+.
Do go and check out the rest of the project and stay tuned as a new deviation will be revealed each day. I can't wait to see all of the other pieces
To get some inspiration I randomly Googled for different tree designs and came across one I liked at the top of a small hill. Using the scene as a reference I built up the background then found positions where the emotes would work. I quite like the end result as it allows each viewer to create their own story to go with the scene.
For the majority of the piece I was on join.me so thank you to all that came to watch and keep my company.
Im not going to animate the ligthing I thought of just leaving it static for that reason, but I sortta wanted to try an animated fire. now i think of it the fire is kinda ugly anyway... maybe i should change it to static
Edit made the stars twinkle feedback from `Endorell-Taelos(omg i spelled her name right on the first try for once )
Edit 2 Well A DD? for me? well its about time! JK I actually was not expecting this in the least! my old "I want a DD phase" ended when I got my first one so now this really is a pleasant surprise. Thanks to `Endorell-Taelos and ^SparklyDest you guys are great
Over the past few weeks *marcphx has created a number of different things for me including a new Facebook icon and cover photo, and a new journal CSS. As a thank you for all his work and making me smile so much, I wanted to make something in return. So I put my thinking hat on thinking about what could be better than a panda balloon, and came up with the idea of a MASSIVE panda balloon.
So I started this piece over a month ago and it's been sitting on my desktop since then waiting to be finished. If you can't tell, it's based on the famous shot from the film ET with a few minor tweaks .
As some of you may have spotted, I often refer to *MerelyCubed as ET. I started using this nickname for him because that's what =Kyramy called him and it simply stuck. For a while I thought it would be fun to try and include ET's OC Aston into a scene from the ET movie and this seemed the most logical one to do.
I hand pixelled the moon, sky and trees then used transparency to help blend the moon into the background. I used a reference to get the bike looking right, but have sadly misplaced it. I tried to include a full size version of Aston, but it didn't quite fit right so I resized him to make a mini Aston. I was going to have a plain emote riding the bike but =BlissfullySarcastic suggested I should use a mini Syn instead xD
This was the one of back up pieces I did for the 2012 Emoticonist Advent Calendar The day has passed and I decided that I can submit it now. It was the 8th piece I created :>
I am proud of this piece, even though I used a reference. This piece has 50 colours, it would have been 28 without the Emotes (including the torch [they already have 23 colours <_< ]) and the stars. I am proud of the reflection of the torch-light since I used solid colours and no transparency.
The theme for the contest was 'Important events of all time', so I opted to design my entry around the creation of the Rubik's cube. Anyone that knows me (or has been watching my account for some time) will probably know I'm a big fan of Rubik's cube and have a growing collection of cubes all shapes and sizes. So whilst some people may not feel the invention of the Rubik's cube is an important one, it is certainly important to me
I've tried several times in the past to make a Rubik's cube themed emote, but find working on a small scaled difficult, as it is hard to get a lot of detail down into so few pixels. So I opted to go big and create a large scale cube which emotes could construct. I felt it would be rather boring if they constructed a cube which was already solved, so opted for them to build a scrambled cube, using an actual 3x3 cube for reference.
This emote also doubles as my first emote in #NaNoEmo's June Visual Purpose (VP) event.
