Why?Why is it when a rock gives us a crush it hurts or kills but when we have a crush it's one of our greatest thrills?Why?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Why is it when we fall from a cliff we usually die but when we fall in love (a much higher fall) we usually fly?
What I do know is when your love sick its worse than being real sick.
Love is crazy!

Lessons from Sharing the Story of My (Possibly)...... Gay 6-Year-Old Son.Lessons from Sharing the Story of My (Possibly)...1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Editor's note: "Amelia" is a pseudonym chosen by the author in order to keep her family's identity anonymous.
On August 16 I learned what viral meant.
I wrote an essay about my oldest son and his love of a popular gay television character, Glee's Blaine, and how this crush led to him telling me he wanted to kiss boys, not girls. I naively posted it to a blog (http://getstooobsessed.tumblr.com/post/9004061623/mommy-they-are-just-like-me-my-oldest-son-is), thinking some fans of the show might think it was cute.
Within 24 hours it had been reposted and "liked" over 30,000 times on the blog's website. It wasn't long before messages started flooding in, other websites began posting it and people were commenting. The response was overwhelming positive. What I thought was a simple story about my kid and our family had clearly stuck a chord with a lot of people.
It also made some people uncomfortable. Of the criticisms, the most common is that my son is six years old an
Back to NOLAI must admit that I am still just as fascinated, and completely in love with New Orleans. It is just so full of life, that it literally breathes on it's own. While I doubt that a full month would allow me the opportunity to do and see all of the things I want to, a few days just makes my soul happy.Back to NOLA1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I saw a different side to the Quarter this time, meandering the streets at 4:00 am, watching the absolute quiet side to what most people perceive only as a place to get drunk, throw beads, and eventually throw up the Hurricane's, Mint Juleps, and Dixie beer that was ingested too fast and in too great a quanitity. There are no live bands at 4:00 in the morning, just a few notes that flitter across the air from the hotel lobbies. Waste workers are busy sweeping up plastic cups, and powerwashing sidewalks. The street sweepers offer that motorized hum as their make their way down the uneven streets. The little diners start to cook and the
The Importance of Lens ChoiceI take a lot of my cues from cinema and in particular filmmakers using DSLR for their work. I don't think it's useful for me to tell someone to go out and by this lens or that lens because ultimately what you use will be a matter of the right tools to help achieve the expression that you want to share. Therefore what you choose to shoot with will be different than what I choose to shoot with. The Importance of Lens Choice1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Instead of going into detail explanations I think the substance of what I'm trying to share can be found in these videos:
stillmotion's guide to lenses for weddings and events
https://vimeo.com/13140360
More important than what the lens does is why you are using it again, Stillmotion gives a great explanation here:
deconstructing the story // a lens & composition tutorial

Hope this provides some insight for you.
Edting ShootsI was recently asked about how I go about making selections (the edit) for my shoots. I do two passes for the edit usually the next day or within 72 hours of the shoot. If trade, the team gets 1 week from the posting of the online gallery (now using Zenfolio) to get their selections to me.Edting Shoots1 year ago in Personal More Like This
1st pass
Working backwards, I make my initial edit using only the flag in Lightroom. I find that working backwards gives me a fresh perspective without having to wait a few days for my emotions from the shoot to clear. It also caters to my thinking as I'm often shooting multiple shots per pose so I find the one that I want faster because I was working the pose.
2nd pass
Viewing on the flagged images, I will rate them according to the following scale:
1*=client gallery (all images that are worth sharing with my clients)
2*=shoot selects
3*=social media/blog worthy
4*=online portfolio worthy
5*rint book worthy
If it's a trade shoot, team (Model and Stylists) get color codes for their selec

It can be found here: http://www.blurb.com/books/3666453
(the link above leads to the book preview (13 pages), details on the book can be found here: http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3666453)
Included are both black/white and colour pictures, a few manipulations, a variety of high- and low- key images, both explicit and not-explicit... As well as the story behind my photography.
The book starts at USD $28.95 for a softcover 10-by-8 inch book (translates to $33.33 after tax and shipping within the States), which is more worthy than buying individual prints, since it's less than a dollar per imageYou can choose between softcover/ hardcover/ hardcover with dust jacket (the dust jacket is the only one that includes the book flaps), as well as the paper quality.

Answer: you shoot like a girlHi againAnswer: you shoot like a girl9 months ago in Personal More Like This
and thanks for all the responses to my last journal entry.
First I have to clarify: I think that most people that say that i shoot like a girl, don't mean it in a negative way. They often express it by adding that my pics are so romantic and fragile or something like that.
I just always wondered why ppl think that this might have something to do with me being female. When ppl learn about my job, meaning that I am a mathematician, they seem to be surprised, like that wouldn't be typical female. Although then my photographic work looks typically female to them. I was wondering if that idea came up before or after knowing that I am a girl.
Regarding my models: I think it's true that they feel more relaxed with a girl as a photographer and that it helps with the photos then. But I also think that it is a real benefit for my work as a photographer that i used to model myself (well and sometimes still do), 'cause I usually know exactly what poses and expressions I want and how to ge

RejectionI made my first “serious” photographic attempt when I was in third grade. I got yelled at by my mom and dad for “wasting” film. By seventh grade, I’d borrowed my dad’s old army days camera loaded with black and white film and was roaming the northern Minneapolis suburbs on my bicycle looking for photographic opportunity. I’m fifty six now, so you do the math. Not all that time have I photographed. Like all my interests, it waxes and wanes. Still, that’s how long I’ve been making photographs.Rejection2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Somewhere in there... really only twenty to twenty five years ago, I started showing. I entered exhibits, I put on one man shows, I submitted to magazines. All the things an art photographer does to get seen. Do I need to tell you that many of those attempts ended in rejection? Costly rejection at that! This goes back to the film days of course, but let’s not even count the costs of film, processing, and printing. Let’s ju

Just kidding. Kinda.
The first place position was in a contest from :iconPhotoSubmit: with the simple theme "Chocolate". I entered with this photo -and completely ROMPED home with 39% of the vote!
At this point I would like to point out that winning the contest is a little bit hollow and it's one of the problems with dA. Essentially, dA is simply a popularity contest. If the contest is a fr

But... my birthday is coming up in AugustNew Lenses1 year ago in Personal More Like ThisI am photographing a wedding coming up in August as well. I have started shooting people rather than just nature. I just haven't gotten around to making another deviantart for the people photography. (I don't want to mix nature with people). What do you guys recommend?? Also, how do y'all feel about putting film lenses (with adapters) on digital cameras? I have heard from some that it's a cheap alternative that can work nicely if you get a good film lens. I also understand that I would be shooting in manual mode and I have no problem with that. (I would be using these lenses on other shoots that aren't so dependent on timing).
As a side note, I start my second photography class in August. It's the digital

Early life becomes an exploration of invisible parameters, circles beyond circles, as one pushes out to test the boundaries of safety. There is one’s bedroom, one’s home, neighborhood, school and town, state and nation. Early on, maps become important documents – declarations of being and rights and privileges. In the art world, throughout history, maps have been a constant measure of human progress, from the Phoenecians recording their trade routes over 2000 years ago, or pre-Columbian t

Holiday Card Project 2012Holiday Card Project 20127 months ago in deviantART Blog More Like This
It's back! With the goal of bringing a little cheer to patients in the hospital during the holiday season, the deviantART Holiday Card Project connects deviants from around the world and applies their tremendous artistic abilities in designing and creating uplifting holiday cards.
In past years, the Project has received more than 5,000 cards sent in by more than 1,000 deviants from 50 different countries/political regions. Cards were then divvied up and distributed in-person by deviantART members to local Los Angeles, CA hospitals, with additional cards given to various hospitals in the U.S. and abroad for hospital staff members to hand out to patients.
The idea behind the Holiday Card Project is simple: do something nice for others. However, if you're looking for even more incentive, every deviant who submits a card will be given a free one-month Premium Membership to deviantA
