MLP: Minky Color Guide:
Which minky color works best for ______ (insert MLP character here)?
This journal is an attempt to answer that question. There are more than 50 shades of minky out there, and as a plushie maker, I realize that it can be difficult to know which color will work best for the particular pony you're working on. This is made even more frustrating by the fact that many of the images of the minky do not show the true color!
I recently ordered a ton of swatches from fabric.com, and I'm continuing to collect swatches from various websites, in an attempt to get most of the minky colors. Because I have the actual fabric with me, I can compare it to the characters' colors to see which fits best, to ensure that you can make a plushie that is as show-accurate as possib
Pony ResourcesI'm routinely updating this post with new resources that people send me. So feel free to send me links to tutorials or other informational posts/deviations/links that you think might be helpful to plushy makers!Pony Resources3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been putting together a new list of pony resources over the last few weeks. It's been a while since I did the first journal post on the topic and unfortunately a lot of the original links went dead when BabyLondonStar deactivated her account. I also wanted to include some links for other non-eye and mark related things that I've found over the time I've been on deviantART.
There's a really cool tutorial by BeeZee-Art for making spiral plushie horns that I thought folks might like to see for their unicorns. I think you could also apply it to plushies where the horn is sewn in already, getting your needle in there might be a little harder though.
Once you've finished sewing your pony you may want to take
Tutorial: How to machine stitch heads onto bodiesTutorial time! This is another basic tutorial that will show you how to machine stitch a plush's head onto its body. Please be aware that I can't teach anyone how to make patterns. I'm just putting together a few tips and tricks that will hopefully help someone.Tutorial: How to machine stitch heads onto bodies1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Sew your plush's body together, leaving the entire back open.
Sew your plush's head together, also leaving the back open.
Match the head to the body and pin. When making your pattern, make sure the circumference of the opening at the bottom of the head is equal to the circumference of the neck opening of the plush body.
Sew a straight line from one end to the other.
The plush's head is now attached!
You should now have a plush with the entire back open! All you have to do now is finish it!

So you want to digitizeIn this tutorial I'm going to attempt to explain how to autodigitize images into embroidery files. There are many different software programs out there. Here is a link to some free software called Stitch Era: http://www.imprimeo.net/howget.htmSo you want to digitize3 years ago in Personal More Like This
In this tutorial I'll be showing you how to digitize using PE Design Lite!
This software is best used in conjunction with an image editing program like Adobe Photoshop. I've found that PE Design Lite is quite finicky with colors so you need a high quality vector image of the design you want to digitize.
So the first thing you need to do is find or create your design. Once you have a good quality image open your software.
Note: PE Design Lite has only the most basic of functions. For more embroidery options you'll need to buy/download more advanced digitizing programs.
Step 1: Open software
Step 2: Import your image
This is the file I want to digitize:
Step 3: Click the autodigitize button and the color grid will pop up.

A Note About The Flaming Pony.Hi hi everypony!A Note About The Flaming Pony.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So, I get asked a lot of the same questions, as I'm sure you can all imagine, and sometimes I can answer them and sometimes I can't. Lately I've been getting asked about Wild Fire and why she was changed in one of the last episodes, if we'll ever see her again, and how she came to be in the first place.
Her first appearance in the Canterlot Wedding ep, wasn't much of an exciting story (none of this really is). After seeing the cleaned up storyboard (which I believe that section was drawn by fellow board artist Marshall), I noticed that the one pony he drew looked almost like Wild Fire. For shoots and giggles, I went to our art director and simply just asked if we could try and make it WF. And it worked. She was approved as a "board pull" design. It was as simple as that.
While work had begun on season 3, I was approached by my good friend Wootie (and co-director) asking if it was okay to use WF as a Wonderbolt Cadet for the 307 episode. They needed a few more designs,

When you make your gusset pattern, leave a little hole where you want the horn to be.
Pin the horn to the gusset hole. They should be the same length.
Now match the back of the horn together and pin.
Sew from the end of the gusset to the tip of the horn.
Now you have a horn that's machine stitched to the gusset!
Pony Price ListGeneral Commission Info Hat Pricing FAQPony Price List3 years ago in Personal More Like This
All plushes are minky with applique eyes and cutie marks, unless otherwise agreed upon.
"Starting prices" are listed for all types of plushes. "Starting prices" are defined as the price for the most basic pony of that kind. I start from my base pony price and add charges according to how difficult the character is to make. Design elements that add complexity such as difficult or multicolored manes, body markings, and modifications to the basic pattern will add cost. For a full and amus

Commissions [OPEN]I'm wondering- if people would pay a bit for drawings from me since my other hobby is music [specifically singing], and it's not exactly cheap ;_;Commissions [OPEN]7 months ago in Personal More Like This
I'm saving up for a $270 condenser microphone that I need to record vocals.
So I'm opening a few commission slots. They would be:
Ponies, preferably OCs.Full colour.Lineless800x800 px.Transparent bg.
The [edited] price is $10, or [preferably] 1000 sent to my donation pool.
[Please tell me if that price is ok, I'm new here, after all ^^]
[Thanks everyone c:]
Also, taking that OC design that I linked up there, do you guys think adoptables from me would be nice enough to sell? If so, what's a good price for a non-rockstar artist? And do you know any good places to advertise?
I've realised this sort of commission is too specific, since I enjoy painting many things besides ponies.

My Plushie Making ProcessEDIT - This journal post began as something negative but I have decided to make it into something more positive. My Plushie Making Process2 years ago in Personal More Like This
My Plushie Making Process
1. Create a pattern using photoshop. I often use reference images of ponies from the show to try and get each plushie as show accurate as possible. Each pattern can take anything from 3-10 hours of tweaking in photoshop alone. TIME : 3-10 hours
2. Once I have a pattern I want to test, I convert it to PDF, print it and cut it out. There are normally about 6 pages of patterns not including manes, tails or accessories.
3. Once I have my pattern I now move onto embroidery files. I first take a reference image of the character and create a vector of the eye and cutie marks in photoshop. Once I have a crisp vector, I import it into my digitizing program (Brother's PE Design) and digitize each file. Each plushie has different eyes and cutie mark so this has to be done fo

Ever since I posted Wolf Link and Midna I've been getting an influx of messages asking me to teach, reveal my secrets, take people under my wing, and so on. The sad thing is I can't spend all that much time one on one with everybody asking me to teach them. So I've decided to put together this massive block of text, relating some of my personal experience in plush making and listing off all my resources at the bottom. This will cover the very basics of plush and pattern making so if you are completely new to plush making this is for you, if you're not and you're just looking for resources skip to the bottom. I hope this will be helpful to someone!
First off, the reality. The big secret. The key to becoming a good plush artist is...
I can already feel the glares and exasperation but hear me out first.
One thing I've noticed with a lot of the messages I got were that a lot of people were scared of screwing up.
How do you embroider? (Updated with findings)Update:How do you embroider? (Updated with findings)3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've done several experiments since asking this question, and have come to settle on the following settings to produce the best embroidery:
Stabilizer: Heavyweight cut-away for the very best result (I used Pellon), or 2 layers of medium-weight tear-away (I've tried this for both Pellon and Sulky). Use a water-soluble stabilizer on top of Minky to keep the nap down so the pile will not show through.
Needle: Standard sharp needle, even on Minky. Some recommended ballpoint needles, but the result turned out a bit more sketchy than I'd like.
Embroidery File: 7stitches/mm density, 5 units of fixed pull compensation for pattern fills, and 12 units of variable pull compensation for satin (zig-zag) stitches.
Hooping: Hoop backing stabilizer, and adhere fabric on top. I tried hooping Minky, but the middle kept shifting due to the stretchy nature of the fabric.
Thanks to all (2 of you ) who replied to this entry with suggestions, and to all

MLP - Too Many Pinkie PiesHey hey everypony!MLP - Too Many Pinkie Pies2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So we finally welcome back season 3 of MLP! I'm very excited for this season to unfold, and I hope that all of you are avoiding all the spoilers and commercials like you should be!
Next week, my first episode of season 3 airs, "Too Many Pinkie Pies." I had a blast working on this episode with my amazing board partner Dave. I have never gotten to do a full-on Pinkie Pie episode, so this was definitely a fun one for me.
Looking forward to seeing more fan content, I'm always amazed at all the talent out there!
Hope ya'll enjoy!
