Also, keep checking back, as more characters and their colors will be added soon!)
MLP: Minky Color Guide:
Which minky color works best for ______ (insert MLP character here)?
This journal is an attempt to answer that question. There are more than 50 shades of minky out there, and as a plushie maker, I realize that it can be difficult to know which color will work best for the particular pony you're working on. This is made even more frustrating by the fact that many of the images of the minky do not show the true color!
I recently ordered a ton of swatches from fabric.com, and I'm continuing to collect swatches from various websites, in an attempt to get most of the minky colors. Because I have the actual fabric with me, I can compare it to the characters' colors to see which fits best, to ensure that you can make a plushie that is as show-accurate as possib
Pony ResourcesI'm routinely updating this post with new resources that people send me. So feel free to send me links to tutorials or other informational posts/deviations/links that you think might be helpful to plushy makers!Pony Resources1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I've been putting together a new list of pony resources over the last few weeks. It's been a while since I did the first journal post on the topic and unfortunately a lot of the original links went dead when !BabyLondonStar deactivated her account. I also wanted to include some links for other non-eye and mark related things that I've found over the time I've been on deviantART.
There's a really cool tutorial by *BeeZee-Art for making spiral plushie horns that I thought folks might like to see for their unicorns. I think you could also apply it to plushies where the horn is sewn in already, getting your needle in there might be a little harder though.
Once you've finished sewing your pony you may want to take
Do not ever order fabric from Fabric.comAs my last journal entry stated, I've been having issues with my most recent order from Fabric.com. I know many other plushie makers are also experiencing problems with them. I would encourage everyone to avoid purchasing from them and spread the word that they are no longer a good source for minky. I placed and order for four yards of fabric and a swatch on August 26th. Their website states that orders will be shipped within two business days of purcahse. Nearly two weeks later on September 7th, I received an email saying one of the colors I purchased was out of stock and that those two yards would be canceled. They say that there is a 7-10 day wait for a refund if an order is canceled. I think this is ridiculous when I did not cancel the order myself and when I paid through paypal and they could easily refund the cost with the click of a few buttons. However, I waited the 7-10 days. ThiDo not ever order fabric from Fabric.com1 year ago in Personal More Like This

How To Photograph Your CraftsThe absolute number one cause of rejection of DD suggestions for most Artisan Craft CVs is poor photography. There is nothing worse than seeing an otherwise brilliant piece ruined by a dodgy photo. But even beyond DD acceptance, if you want to people on dA to be able to appreciate your skill you need to be able to show your work off to advantage. How To Photograph Your Crafts4 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Sometimes I'll tell a self-suggester that I can't feature their work because of the quality of the photography and they'll inevitably reply, "Oh, I'll have to get a better camera."
Repeat after me: the tools never make the artist.
You don't need a $9000 sewing machine to stitch a dress, you don't need a $1000 stand mixer to bake a cake, and you similarly don't need a top of the range SLR to take a brilliant photograph. It's all in how you take the photo.
To help us understand photography concepts a little more, Fella is going to help us out. Say hi Fella!

Art Contest!Good day everyone!Art Contest!3 months ago in Personal More Like This
A handful of weddings have already been announced throughout the fandom and both my future wife and me wish all these people the very best! We'll be newlyweds soon enough ourselves.
But different from this, we would like to run an art contest in celebration of our first child being born, to share joy and excitement during the last months before the birth!
There will be prizes, but they will not be very valuable, I admit.
Here's the rules:
- Design a filly!
- It's supposed to represent a theoretical Ponysona for our daughter.
- Gear your design to our Ponysonas (roughly, so a connection can be distinguished, keep yourselves some freedom).
- No Cutie Mark and name required (but feel free to add, if you feel like it, not necessarily on the Pony).
- Simple image will suffice (no matter scan, photo, digital art, vector or anything else, but make sure we can make out details to appreciate your work fully!).
- Uploading and releasing the image to a blog, artpage, etc

1 What is one of your favorite nostalgic TV shows? (Gargoyles, Sailor Moon, etc etc)
Transformers, G1. I only had the movie though, but I watched the hell outta it XD Also Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, and Transformers Armada and Beast Wars/Machines.
2 How old/young were you when you started to play video games?
Oh, I was probably like 6 or something. Played Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 2 on a Game Boy pocket like a champ! And that Superman gameboy game.
3 Do you have a favorite 'fandom'?
Proooobably ponies. But Transformers fans are great too ;D
4 If so to question 3 what is it/are they?
Well, I think I'm a brony and associate with many, many others. And I'm an official TransCostumer, so there's that too. TCos chicks rock.
5 You get to kiss your favorite video game/ TV show character, w

Fluttershy And Nightmare Moon Plush Hair Guide1- Choose your fabric. For Fluttershy, I would use a pink satin, or fleece if you don't trust yourself with expensive material. For Nightmare Moon, I would get some of that special occasion satin from Jo Ann or Hancock that has the little sparkles glued to the fabric, or you could look for fleece with a nebula/space pattern on it (you might have to look online.) Something else that would be interesting is using a translucent satin; it'd look cool over the white batting and edged with blue blanket stitches (use a black or very dark navy blue fabric.)Fluttershy And Nightmare Moon Plush Hair Guide4 months ago in Art Features More Like This
2- Create a pattern by drawing the hair on a sheet of card stock. For Fluttershy, draw her bangs, long mane, and tail separately; the bangs and long mane will be on opposite sides of her face.
3- Cut out the pattern pieces and trace onto the fabric. For satin, use washable tailor's chalk. For fleece, use washable markers. You may or may not want to use markers with translucent satin; they may harm nice fabric, but chalk is really hard

Good luck come tomorrow friends! Once the winner is drawn he or she will have 48 hours to respond. Then I'll start working on their plushie in about two weeks. (I have one plush to finish and midterms to worry about, wish me luck!)
Princess UpdateThings are moving along. I have a test version of the next body prototype that I'm hoping to get done by the end of the week. Unless it comes out absolutely terrible this is going to be the final revision of the body, I'll announce a date for the pattern release and get to work on the instructions and diagrams. So cross your fingers that I haven't messed anything up too badly!Princess Update3 months ago in Personal More Like This
I've tested the two crown patterns and the two closed wing patterns that I designed when I did the last set of body revisions. Those all look good to go. Once the body prototype is done I'll take some pictures of them to show everyone. I'm also going to redo the pink mane to go with this prototype. I'll probably do pictures of the four wing styles using the existing open wing prototypes I have. You've seen the basic shapes of the two open wing styles (on my two princess prototypes) but the one on the plaid princess got an upgrade with more details.
I've also designed more mane and tail pieces I'll be using
Gonna Be at Geek.konI'm home from GenCon and I've set up my new sewing machine! My mom very kindly gave me her old Bernina when I saw her at the con, which is gorgeous and amazing and made of solid frikkin' metal! :iconfillypinkieplz:Gonna Be at Geek.kon4 months ago in Personal More Like This
Sewing with this machine is going to be super awesome. I just need to get used to the new controls (it even has a knee lever to raise the presser foot while turning corners ). <3 I've already used it to test a new version of the raised front leg pattern and determined that it needs another revision before I do a full body test. I'm hoping to get further on the princess pony testing next week.
Over the weekend I'm going to be at Geek.kon part of the time, so let me know if you want to meet up to say hi or to have lunch or anything! I'd love to meet more pony-fans in my area. I can also bring some of the very small handful of physical patterns I have left over if people are interested in those (I make no promises about specific pattern availability, this is whatev

Progress, Wheeeeeee! So the next princess pony prototype is sewn. She needs hair and I've got the files for the newer hair set ready to cut tonight or tomorrow. I think the head is just about in it's final form and I'm relatively happy with how the body come out. I tried something different with the shape of her flanks and I think most of it worked. The pattern needs tweaking, but I'm optimistic that it's down to tweaking, not totally rebuilding the hindquarters like I was afraid of before (done that like three times now x_x ).Progress, Wheeeeeee!5 months ago in Personal More Like This
There should be pictures of some sort tonight or tomorrow; she'll probably still be mostly bald and wingless. Her finished mane and tail should be done this weekend if the new pattern works out.
Then I need to do the body tweaks and start on the next text pony. I'm simultaneously testing some alt-pose and accessory pieces, so you'll probably see those over the next few weeks.
I'm optimistic about the shape of the crowns and I haven't yet decided if I'm
Plushie Pseudo-MomWhenever I get a new plushie I just can't put them down and end up carrying them around the house all day like a baby!Plushie Pseudo-Mom6 months ago in Personal More Like This
This is especially true of plushies I make for myself. It's almost like a pseudo-mother like pride. I parade around showing off my plush baby, and bragging about their cuteness to anyone who will listen.
I sit here typing this with my newest plush baby sitting comfortably on my lap. (I still need to photograph and upload this little guy). And every time I look down into his sweet baby eyes, I can't help but grin with happiness and pride.
I sincerely hope that I'm not the only artist/plush toy enthusiast who does this.
I'm not crazy. I swear. I'm sure this is perfectly normal... hopefully...
