I slipped into what now seemed to be my room and closed the door behind me. Just one futon remained. Most of the boxes were cleared out and the room had a stark, though beautiful, quality. I peeked around and slid open the closets. Once I’d seen all the spaces I could, I plopped on the futon and looked up at the ceiling. With all the items cleared out, it reminded me of my apartment room when I first started renting. I even considered decorating it like this back then but it turned out tatami violated the lease agreement.
I sat and stared at the ceiling for a little while. It was good to have a quiet moment alone to just relax. I didn’t hear any signs of Katsumi in the room over. I did hear Mami moving around the hall. I gave a little yawn. The floor didn’t feel bad to lay on, especially with the futon. I would’ve preferred my own bed but, considering it was stuck in a separate universe, this w

Ms. Ishida was the first to rush into the room. I tried to get out an apology for the glass, but she had me in her arms before I could say anything. Miki came next, assessed the situation, and went looking for a dust broom.
Ms. Ishida took a couple of first-aid items out of the closet in the corner of the room, led me over to Katsumi’s room, and sat me in a chair. Katsumi was sitting on her bed and didn’t offer anything in way of protest. Ms. Ishida kept hugging me until it felt like she’d squeezed all the tears out.
When they were gone, the embarrassment set in. Ms. Ishida wouldn’t let me apologize though. She just said, “Sit. Collect yourself. Don’t worry about it. I will take care of it.”
She gave me a little kiss on the cheek.
I tried a few breaths then finally said, “Umm…good morning.”
She smiled and said, “Good morning to you.”
I felt a little less
Mecchen House - Chapter 7Chapter 7 – Questions with Nana from Mecchen HouseMecchen House - Chapter 76 years ago in Fantasy More Like This
The wind seemed to push us forth along our way. It was calm, but vibrant. The trees nearby, with their triangles of green, barely moved under its influence. Jamie led, and I was in the middle. Nathan and Nana took up the rear.
My wallet and keys slid around as I walked on the pavement. I stopped a moment to stuff them both in the bag Ms. Ishida had given me. The sun shone bright in the east like the purest white paint. I shielded my eyes.
No one said much along the way. With Nana, that wasn’t much of a surprise, but Nathan and Jamie both looked subdued. I figured that was my fault.
I thought I saw Mami’s bright hair on someone in the distance. They wore the same uniform as the other girls. The girl carried herself like Mami as well. But they were going one way, and we were going the other. I gave them one last look before we turned at the gas station.
Nana finally broke the silence when we came to the cr

I didn’t wake with the expectation that the previous evening was all a dream. One look at the ceiling swiftly killed any chance of that.
I didn’t wake feeling renewed and refreshed. More like sweaty and stiff, on my head especially. Katsumi’s wig didn’t breathe.
I also didn’t wake up alone. Fortunately, it was just Ms. Ishida with a bundle of clothes in her arms. Some of them looked like mine. I sat up.
She flashed me a grin like a caught thief. “Sorry to wake you. Pleasant morning to you.” I assured her I woke up on my own, hoarsely returned the greeting, and asked her what time it was.
“Six in the morning, or pretty close to it.” Earlier than I was used to. Surprising the sun was even up at this hour.
“Where are my… roommates?”
She tucked the clothes into a bag. “Nathan… I think he’s with Miki right now. And your other roomma

After shaking off my confusion, I paused at the last step on my way back to the first floor. That delicious chestnut aroma enveloped me. I really was getting hungry. I planned to have something microwaveable after I finished my coding, but the udon which Ms. Ishida was warming up sounded a lot better. Of course, it was probably gonna be microwaved as well.
I peeked at the room I thought of as the living room. Katsumi had finished her job on Nathan’s hair and was blowing curling, white steam off her curry rice. Her mouth made a perfect, pink circle. Nathan was bright red with a sextet of bows in his hair in too-short but still cute braids. They looked utterly ridiculous. I gave Nathan a sympathetic smile.
Katsumi glared over at me. “Ms. Ishida says your food is ready. If you stay any longer after eating then all three of you will face my full fury. You’ll wish you merely faced death.” Katsumi

After all those questions, I figured Katsumi would ask a few of her own.
She asked, “Could you sit on the floor with your legs folded? This pose isn’t really working for me. And I shouldn’t have started in pen.”
Katsumi stayed on the same page of her notebook. I stood up from the chair and sat on the floor a few different ways until Katsumi liked the one which left my feet numb.
If her goal was to remind me yet again, without shouting it, that I was a girl, then she succeeded. The remaining lavender scent on my hands definitively contributed as well.
Katsumi smiled. “Great facial expression. Almost done.”
Akiko reached over for the towel behind Katsumi. It was Katsumi’s turn to sniff. She raised her head from the page and looked at Akiko, who stared back like a thief caught in the act. Akiko lay protectively on the pink blanket.
Katsumi bent to sniff Akiko’s fingers. “Sumi

Jamie and Keiko were silent on either side of me. I thought I could hear Ms. Ishida moving downstairs.
I expected Jamie to speak first, but Keiko said the next words.
I told her the truth. “I really have no idea.”
Jamie stepped in.
“So… You expect us to accept what you said?”
“I’m telling you what happened.”
Jamie leaned forward, close enough to sniff me, and said, “…in a dream you had from taking a whiff of a bird.”
I shook my head. Well, when he put it like that, it was easy to dismiss. And it was understandable to me that Jamie would. But there was something about the whole experience that stuck in my thoughts.
“It wasn’t merely a dream. It felt like a memory, “ I told them.
Jamie peered at me with a look of annoyance. “You do realize dreams tend to be made up of memories, right?”
I could hear footsteps on

I went inside first with the others close behind. Carolyn was tidying up. I smiled. He smiled back and said, “Welcome to our shop. Can I help you girls?”
Jamie ground his fist into his hips. “I’ve had enough of your teasing!”
Carolyn straightened up. “Oh… my sincere apologies. Uh… sir?” He gave a mystified-looking blink at Jamie. I could already tell something wasn’t right about all this.
Jamie brushed a sleeve. “That’s better. I suppose you want an update on our situation. We still seem to be… female. And this is the one responsible!” He launched an accusing arm to point out Hitomi, who leaned against the glass. Her mouth clenched shut and her eyes narrowed.
Carolyn gave each of us a look. Akiko peeked over the side of my hip and seemed to pick at the scabs on her hand.
He scratched at his forehead a few times and flipped back a bit of hair. “I think you

A few days later
I cracked my fingers a few times over the computer keyboard after putting a period at the end of the last sentence. I read back over what I had written and gave a nod.
It wasn’t much of a diary, and it had been a good while since I’d done non-programming writing on a computer, but I felt satisfied with the results. It helped me to organize all the strange things I’d learned and felt in something resembling order. It didn’t solve my problems, but it made me feel a little more in control.
I clicked save and moved the file to the memory stick Tara had picked out for me the other day. It was fiery pink, but had enough storage that I had no reason to complain about the color. She said it was an early birthday gift.
Still, I paid her back by finally sitting through a number of episodes of Yumeko. As I watched, it was pretty clear to me that Hitomi left the series, among other thi

The next words Katsumi said were, “Okay, go ahead. Make them vanish. Or turn them into girls.”
This Nina girl looked at a loss for what she was supposed to do. Eventually she said softly, with a slight quiver in her words, “You do realize I’m not a priest or a mystic, right?”
Katsumi wobbled her head from side to side. “I get that. But I also know you have abilities because of… what we talked about.”
“Yeah. The ability to see spirits. Sometimes. As I tried to explain before, I think you want someone who is good with purification rituals. There’s a shrine not too far from here. There’s a few I know who would be quite willing to bless this house.”
Katsumi sighed through her nose. “I know. I’ve been there. When I tell them I want to purge the house of all past and future men, they give me strange looks.”
“I see.” This ‘Ni

Of course, the next question was when were they checked out? The lenders information said three days ago. The books had been checked out only this one time. Theyd been first stocked by the library early last August. Three of the publishing dates were thirty-years ago. The other two were brand-new, just published when they were stocked. No publisher given. Edited by Chosha Ikamono. This guy sure wrote a lot. His name was on all five of the books.
As the librarian moved back to close the window on the screen, I asked her about the author. She looked at me with those lime eyes of hers as though Id asked her for the color of the sky. When my confusion remained, she told me, Its a pseudonym. It means fake author. That could mean theyre all by the same person. Or it could be a group of people who dont want to be known for writing those books.

I just couldn’t articulate that name. I knew it with every fiber of my being, but I failed to find the words for it. It was something beyond the words I knew.
Still, I glared into the menacing dark and told it, “I know you.”
It laughed with deep, rumbling laughter.
“You think you are strong? You are weak. You think anything you do matters? None of it matters. It is pointless to try. What do you think you can achieve? Nothing. You are nothing. Give up. She is mine, and so are you.”
I clenched my fists until they burned. “Leave her alone. NOW!”
It slipped along behind Ami. “You are yelling in the dark. You have no power. You have no skill. You just watch and spin in circles. You are nothing. Let it all fade away. You will be happier.”

The wicked cackle from Katsumi made me reconsider for a moment. A door slid open, and Katsumi quickly covered her mouth. Her tension released when she realized it was just Miki with a container full of colorful items, a towel over her shoulder, and a toothbrush in her mouth.
Her gaze lingered on Katsumi before she walked into the bath area and closed the door behind her. Katsumi let her tension go and looked over at us. “Anyway. I’m glad you all agreed. Now my plan can go forward. As soon as your feminine materials are ready to wear. ‘Till then, I have a few things to prepare. Don’t go anywhere, or I will physically hunt you down and super glue you to every girlish thing I have for all eternity.”
This was becoming like revolving doors. No sooner did Katsumi exit, her weighty footfalls sounding on each step (how, I wondered, could she ever expect to sneak up on anyone when sh

I pulled Jamie out from under Nathan. He didn’t fight… Much. The color in his face was only now beginning to return.
“My arm hurts…” was all Jamie could manage in a monotone.
The pieces started to come together for him.
“You only hurt if you’re awake…”
One plus one would then equal…
“I was gonna get in front of a bus. I would’ve died…”
I didn’t know if Jamie’s life was passing in front of his eyes, but I knew that he would be passing out soon enough again if I didn’t intervene.
“Jamie, I know this is tough for you. I barely understand it myself. But we need you with us. We need you now.” Barely understanding was a fair overstatement. I could feel myself trembling. As long as I’d known Jamie, he’d always been crawling into his own little caves and hid, from conflict, from pain, with the easiest way out. I c
Valentine Challenge Day 10Day 10: Khaji Da/Jaime Reyes (Young Justice)Valentine Challenge Day 102 years ago in Romance More Like This
Khaji Da could remember the night he was found by his Jaime. His late carrier Ted Kord had just died in an explosion and he landed outside of his building. Scarabs first thought was to find a new suitable body to take control of.
A young boy came stating down the street and stumbled upon him. At first Khaji Da didn't even think about attaching himself to Jaime, and just wait to find someone better. But once he was picked up by Jaime he felt a spark go through him.
Without even fully realizing what he was doing, the scarab crawled on to Jaime's back and attached himself to his spine. He immediately spread his armor around the boy, and oddly felt...pleasure. Khaji Da had never felt that sensation before, but he knew that this boy was who he was meant to bond with.
Jaime was not happy about it at first, which Khaji Da could understand, it was a lot for a teenager to take in. Since the scarab was worried that Jaime might go to someone to get rid

I could smell her.
Her presence surrounded me.
This… ‘Hitomi’, whose name I couldn’t even bring myself to think about with much confidence, saturated me with closeness. Nana’s smell was still there; Warm metal with an accent of clay. But it was surrounded by the traces of countless other aromas that flowed from her.
She took a step back but kept her hands on me.
‘Akiko’ peered around my side with both eyes out.
‘Hitomi’ dashed back and her hands pulled away.
“What is that doing here?” ‘Hitomi’ brought an arm in front, as though she were readying a weapon.
‘Akiko’ flinched. She crouched and clutched my thigh to the point of numbness.
I answered, “What are you doing here?”
‘Hitomi’s voice trembled. “Please answer my question first, sister. Then I’ll answer yours.”

My latest chapter with Spine and his french, mixed with talk of cheesecake. Then this happened in the cavcaldium.
Spine grumbled as he stepped out of the bathroom, tugging at the frills. This was so embarrassing Why did Rabbit have to pick a French Maids costume, especially the dress and stockings.
Aw you look so cute! Micheal chuckled, patting his cheeks.
Yea thanks for helping.
Hey youre the one that lost the bet. Micheal continued to laugh.
They entered the kitchen to applause from Rabbit, Jon, and Hatchworth. The floor was covered in breakfast cereal, dirty dishes, and any kind of mess you could think of.
Do I have to pick up all of these cheerios? Spine grumbled, feeling very embarrassed.
Yes! With just your hands! Rabbit cheered.
Can I at least take the dress off?
No that would ruin the whole effect!

The message repeated at this point. Jamie cracked her neck, audibly so. I figured now was the time to ask since we weren’t going anywhere for a while.
“Tell me the rest of your vision.”
“You still on that? I told you all the critical details.”
The train lurched forward slowly.
“All I know for certain is you met a cat with weird fur and a crooked tail and went to a particular residence, formerly owned by the Ishidas, which is now Carolyn’s barber shop.”
“That should be enough.”
“I told you everything that happened in my vision.” I folded my arms in my lap.
The train lurched to a stop again.
It didn’t take long for Jamie to cave. “Fine…” She set her fists on either side of her chin. That looked quite cute.

Though her answer tripped me up a little, it actually made the most sense. And it also told me she had knowledge of not only Brookville but of what I did in my own room.
I challenged her with this supposition and said, “I assume this means those three figures were…?”
“The images of my sisters.”
A straight answer.
I pressed my hands together. “Alright. Why…? Why would I put those figures of… sisterly forms… in my room?”
It wasn’t fully clear to me where I was leading this. I wondered about Jamie’s hypothesis that this girl just had the wrong trio. Perhaps there was some way to poke holes in her own assumptions and ultimately set things right.
“They were reminders. Shaky fragments of memory. I learned from them in making my own.” Hitomi’s gaze lingered low with distance to her words. It seemed almost like she was in a trance.

It was calm and warm when we turned onto the road and crossed the street during an ebb in traffic. My fan-spirit made my eyes linger on the colorful sight of the anime shop, but we didn’t stop this time either. A group of men passed to our left. They looked quite tall and young.
They were dressed in a different color scheme than the Azako uniforms. All four of them had that pretty-boy look we also had when we first emerged from the forested path. One had slick-back black hair with a harsh frown, another had a soft crown of feathered-blond hair and light-grey eyes, another looked confident but long locks tumbled over his eyes and the one in the back seemed to be lugging more than he could manage with a younger-brother look and worried eyes.
The confident one stopped the group with a snap of his fingers and turned to look at Jamie. His nose fanned out with a dark line rising to his thick eyebrows. He held a hand out

It was enough to make me want to come up with a persona of my own.
I watched the empty chairs and joined the others in saying “I receive this meal” before picking at a breaded ball.
It was as salty as I’d been warned.
I kept my glass of water near as I picked through the variety of seafood items Sumi made.
The crab and scallops were nice. I complimented Sumi on them.
Bad idea. It drew her attention to me.
She leaned on one arm, smiled, and crushed a crab leg with her hand.
“Thank you,“ she said, picking the meat out. “I’m glad you enjoy it.”
I gave my thanks to Reiko as well.
She slipped some hair behind her ear and looked at me. “I did very little.”
“I still give my thanks.”
She yanked the hair from behind her ear. “You devaluate it by giving it for nothing.”
Reiko hunched over her meal, signaling she was finished with talking.

Jamie pressed his hands together and shook his head. “Why didn’t she fix us? Why? Wake her up and ask her!”
Reiko bent forward with her legs holding fast to the floor. “Why does she force me to continue to exist in torment?! Ask her that!”
The questions came in fast waves. Aneko wanted to know about her mother. Mami asked, “What did she mean about ‘papers’?”
Miki seemed equally-curious about Hitomi’s words. Only Keiko and Tara didn’t offer a question to the rising torrent.
Tara stepped in front of me with her hands out. She smiled softly and said, “I can answer questions. Not everything, but I remember some things about my old life.”
She took the questions in the order they were asked and looked to Jamie first. “As you may have gathered, Hitomi’s wish was to fix you… and Keiko and Kelly-kun. That’s why she did all this.”

The chill became a sickly-warm feeling. “Took care of how?”
Hitomi staggered and braced herself against the wall. “With some difficulty.”
Countless possibilities burned through my thoughts. I leaned towards Hitomi.
“Did you kill anyone?”
She widened her darkened eyes at me in horror. “How could you think such a thing?! Of course not!”
At least she didn’t kill anyone. But there were far worse things than death.
I thought of Ami.
“Then what did you do?”
She stretched her fingers. “Something that was a lot harder than I expected.”
I was tiring of this. “Tell me… exactly what you did.”
She looked me in the eye, sighed, and said, “I dealt with three conflicting elements. A librarian, a barber, and a so-called ‘demon’.”
I dashed near and pressed my arms around her on the hallway wall. “They have names! Shioriko. Carolyn. And Ni
