Sipping tea with your Muse Only by fostering a facility with the vocabulary of your artistic medium of choice, can you begin to really free yourself to be open to being creative with it.Sipping tea with your Muse9 months ago in Personal More Like This
The size of that vocabulary is another matter, and that’s about growth, improvement and development. These are important as well, and intricately linked to creativity, in parallel (more on that in a future article). But first let’s talk simply about the genesis aspect of art.
Remember when you were in high school, doodling in the margins of your notebooks? Ballpoint pen and edges of blue-lined notebooks, with half an ear listening to the lesson of the day? There was a familiarity in that setting, and ease that you moved through when you sketched these throwaway doodles. Every once in a while you’d accidentally make one that you’d really like, and you’d save that scrap of paper with notes on American History melding into the lines of a drawing of your D&D charac

✿ Watercolor Equipment II - Additional Tools
In the first week of Artist's Toolbox, we discussed basic Watercolor Equipment such as paper, brushes and paints. Second week's article presents additional tools, equipment that some artists use to enhance their watercolor creations or just for the fun of it, however none of them is crucial to create a watercolor painting.
I divided these tools into two categories - those used to Create Highlights and those used to Create Textures. Bottom part of this article belongs to our watercolorists and their Personal Experience regarding additional tools.

As I stated in a previous journal, this year the Secret Santa event that I have hosted in the past will be hosted by the wonderful new group Re-Artcrossing that Vivacia18 and I have been working on getting up and running!
We're excited to host the event as a group and to be able to promote the group in doing so, but that does not mean you have to be a member in order to participate (although we hope you'll consider it! ).
On to the rules and such!
How It Works
Participants will send Re-Artcrossing a note with various information about what they might like to receive for their gift (called a profile, more later), as well as their address.
This will happen between now and November 21, 2014.
After November 21st we will draw names at random and send a note to each participant with the profile of their Secret Santa as well as their Secret Santa's address and an ArtID.
(Why the ArtID? Basically it helps us to

Fanboy Expo Con!Hey all! I am here at the Fanboy Expo con with my sister in Tampa and we had the most incredible day. I got to meet Greg Ellis. GREG ELLIS! I was so nervous, awkward and I seriously couldn't stop myself from being a bumbling idiot since the only words running through my head at incredible speed that was looping over and over again was something like "Oh my God I am here talking with Greg Ellis-like TALKING WITH GREG ELLIS OMG I AM HERE TALKING WITH GREG ELLIS..." and it was kinda hard to register much else between that and my heart racing. He was incredibly nice and very appreciative of his fans and since I happened to be the only one there at the time (most folks were still at work I believe or caught in some insane traffic due to an accident) he actually invited me to sit down and have a chat. I am glad I was offered a seat since my legs and gravity weren't working too well for me the longer he talked. 9/11It seems a lifetime ago that something happened on this day to change the lives of so many people. It's easy to go about daily routine and mundane life and forget the trauma of the past. Yet in so many ways it still touches us now, even without us realizing it. Trawling through an airport today is very different to what it was over ten years ago. In some ways, that's a good thing. That we are more aware now of what aspects of the world can do to us, is a good thing. That we had to suffer such loss and destruction to humanity is, of course, not. September 11th 2001 was so big that nearly everybody has a story to tell. Nearly everybody knows somebody who knows somebody who knows someone who was there, or was nearby, or died. Even more people know a soldier that has since fought in a war born of the events of that day. Loss of life continues even now. For me, the horror was that my Grandparents were on the next plane flying into New York right after the attacks. They were grounded in Cana9/112 years ago in Personal More Like This

Oblivion FeatureOblivion Feature2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion is one of my favourite games of all time, surpassed only by Morrowind, and I've been planning for a long time to put together a feature with original artwork. Unfortunately, it is very hard to find genuine fan art since almost all Oblivion-related deviations on dA are game screenshots (or manipulations thereof), and I found only a limited number of devs I could use.
Oblivion is an open-ended first-person RPG with an expansive and detailed world, released in 2006. The central plot revolves around the efforts to thwart the fanatical cult Mythic Dawn that plans to open the gates to the demonic realm of Oblivion. In addition to the extensive main quest, there are quest lines for several guilds, and many side missions. Despite being less diversified and immersive than Morrowind, the incredible amount of quality third-party add-ons add a lot of scope and replay value to the game.

How I Got Started...A journal entry from a friend prompted me to think about my beginnings as a mask maker. When I started making masks about 25 years ago (wow!) it was totally on a whim. I was born drawing. My fantasy art, when I was a kid, was pretty standard stuff (dragons, unicorns, things with wings) but I always had a good sense of design and color. I'd been dabbing in leather art...doing tooling on archery bracers and things of that nature. Nothing particularly spectacular or uncommon really but it ~was~ a good thing that I concentrated on tooling and carving first because I perfected my technique in that respect long before the masks happened. How I Got Started...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Back then, NO ONE made masks out of heavy leather with detailed tooling. It just wasn't done. Masks of leather were either thick and plain or thin and swirly/curly in the Venetian style. People used molds for the thick masks, and molds press and mar carving. People used their hands shaping the thin leather, but obviously the thin leather wasn't suitabl
Still Life Stills Features ChocolateCocoa mass was used originally in Mesoamerica both as a beverage and as an ingredient in foods. Chocolate played a special role in both Maya and Aztec royal and religious events. Priests presented cacao seeds as offerings to the gods and served chocolate drinks during sacred ceremonies. All of the areas that were conquered by the Aztecs that grew cacao beans were ordered to pay them as a tax, or as the Aztecs called it, a "tribute".Still Life Stills Features Chocolate3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The Europeans sweetened and fattened it by adding refined sugar and milk, two ingredients unknown to the Mexicans. By contrast, the Europeans never infused it into their general diet, but have compartmentalized its use to sweets and desserts. In the 19th century, Briton John Cadbury developed an emulsification process to make solid chocolate, creating the modern chocolate bar. Although cocoa is originally from the Americas, today Western Africa produces almost two-thirds of the world's cocoa, with Côte d'Ivoire growing almost half of it.

Frankly I'm tired of people asking for free art.People ask me a lot if I would draw something for them for free. I get how they might think it's okay. Art is fun, right?Frankly I'm tired of people asking for free art.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The problem lies in the fact that art takes time and doing art for free once you reach a level where others are willing to pay for your art, these people are asking you to give them your time -- or money, if you believe in "time is money" or potential revenue, you economics majors -- for free.
But wait! What if they're offering you advertisement or exposure to more audiences?
It might appear to be a form of payment at first, but when your art is advertised, what happens then? If other people see your art, it doesn't mean that they're willing to pay you for it too. They might also ask you to do it for free. There are a lot of ways to get exposure for yourself. You know yourself best so you should be the best person to market yourself. Not to mention, you will probably spend less time and effort on the whole affair so you can focus on your

Breylon has Myoneurogastointestinal Disorder and Encephalopathy(MNGIE) which is a type of mitochondrial disease. Basically, all this medical mumbo jumbo means that his body doesn't produce enough energy to keep his body functioning. This lead to many other serious issues with Breylon's health including but not limited to seizures, brain deterioration, and intestinal failure. He is only 4 years old, and he has spent a large portion of his life in the hospital, most recently Dec. 2 through Dec. 19. This will be his last hospitalization since his parents made the difficult decision to move him to complete hospice care.

Squash! It's not just for putting by your front door in the fall!
Preheat oven to 400*F and place the rack in the middle.
Cut the squash in half and scoop out the insides.
Cut a small piece off of the bottom of the round side of each half, so that they don't roll around on the pan when facing up.
In a bowl, or in one of the squash halves if you're lazy, mix:
2 teaspoons margarine
2 teaspoons brown sugar
1 clove garlic finely chopped (or a small squeeze of garlic paste in a tube)
1/2 tsp salt
Less than half a teaspoon, to taste:
Ground black pepper
"Italian seasoning" Which can include oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary, marjoram, sage (if you have those as se

People & Portraits Exposed #1Sometimes it's difficult to know where best to place your People & Portraiture Photography. Along with my fellow general photography CVs I've started to look into what defines the various People & Portraiture Galleries on deviantART - and we've noticed a real inconsistency with what photographers classify as emotive/spontaneous/self portraits and so on. Hopefully this weekly series of articles will help to change that, and challenge those of us who are unsure - to think outside the box when categorizing our work.People & Portraits Exposed #13 years ago in Art Features More Like This

Don't ART for free ...Note written under the influence of several recent situations ...Don't ART for free ...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Now, I understand that not everyone can/like/love to draw - but that does not mean that some people have to treat 'drawing people' as children. A few days ago my friend asked me if I draw him a portrait of him and his girlfriend. I agreed without hesitation ... But when I told how much the portrait will be cost - he was angry with me, that I will not do it for free! I understand that it is my friend - but I spend my free time, energy, etc. on it. So it's no longer just fun for me. It becomes a way of life ...
I wish that those of us - involved in the drawing - were taken more seriously. Because it is a job like any other. Not sitting behind a desk in an office does not mean that I do not work as hard ...
The situation is very well illustrated here:
