Wurr - the first five years27th of June 2007 the first page of Wurr was uploaded online. Today, five years later, what had originally been planned as a mere three page short story with the option of branching out aimlessly has turned into an actual story with a driving plot with 147 pages already existing and two books even printed (English version is under working). Half a decade already. Wow.Wurr - the first five years2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Happy half-decade birthday, comic!
Man, it's been a long way. And even more still lies ahead, let's see if I can wrap it up before hitting the full decade mark.
Since it's kind of a special occasion, I thought it might be fun to look back to how it became what it is today.
I had wanted to make a comic of my own for something like ten years before Wurr even started, and I had had several started projects in the likes of "this is the greatest idea I've ever had in my life! I must make a comic right now", none of which ever got past their third page. It's funny, before Wurr I always advertised and talked about my comics and
Stylization and Avoiding Being an Art AssholeStumbled on an "anatomy blog" showcasing breakdowns of [mostly] bad art to highlight how broken their anatomy is. Which is fine, it can be a great learning tool and exercise, but finding obviously stylized work by master character designers getting shat on by amateur artists is...frustrating**.Stylization and Avoiding Being an Art Asshole3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Designs like these come from a shape-based theory of character design where anatomy doesn't matter as much as mood and implication. It's part of a design language stretching back to studios like Bauhaus and UPA.
If you're looking at something designed like Kim Possible* and going "HAHA THIS WORK IS SHIT LOOK THEIR HIPS ARE TOO LOW THAT'S NOT HOW PEOPLE ARE BUILT!" you are missing the point. THOSE designers aren't going for verisimilitude. Fidelty wasn't the point. The point is matching the feel of a character and making them match their world.

How to make good comics: FailMaybe it's because I'm a (self proclaimed) comic artist, but sometimes people come to me to ask for advice about how to make good comics. How to make good comics: Fail2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Aaaaand to be honest, I have absolutely no idea.
That doesn't stop me from trying to! My brain has a bit of an excitement rush right now since I'm going to leave for an almost-week-long road trip tomorrow with some friends which really makes me want to do something completely irrelevant to anything ever, so have some of my typical rambling again! Been a while, huh?
I bet many of those who ask how to do good comics want to become great comic artists as soon as possible, but actually, I think that one of the best things to do to become a good comic maker is failing. Yeah. Failing is something everyone wants to avoid, as if failing meant instant death or something, but it's something that really isn't all that easy to avoid. (Yeah, failing is embarrassing, which is why people who look like they're good don't show their fails.) And actually I
What are your Literature Suggestions for dA?Latest NewsWhat are your Literature Suggestions for dA?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Hello everyone. The purpose of this journal is to gather suggestions from the members of this website on how the literature section could be improved. Let's compile a list of things that we all think would help improve literature on Deviantart.
No matter how small the idea or suggestion, POST IT. I will add it to this journal for everyone to see.
-Stacked deviations for chapters. Have it so comments can be separate for each chapter.
-Have better protection for our text. I know it's pretty much impossible to completely protect, but I've seen websites where if you copy text from their page and paste it elsewhere, they had hidden sentences from the copy that state where the text is from. It's almost nothing, but it does force more effort onto people to edit them out. (Plus they may not notice it right away. Sneaky sneaky )
-Shorter lines! The lines are seriously waaaaaaay too long. They need to be shorter so we don't
The Future of Kick@$$ ModeI haven't done one of these journals in a long time--not since Buzz died. But finishing an arc is a huge milestone, so I figured it was about time for another one.The Future of Kick@$$ Mode2 years ago in Personal More Like This
First off, I'm going to be taking a couple weeks off from working on Kick@$$ Mode (although I dunno how well that's gonna work out since I can never seem to stay away the comic for too long), but this mini-hiatus doesn't mean that I will stop working on "Kick@$$ related" stuff. There are a lot of things I've been meaning to draw for a long time, like cover art and character sheets. I'll also probably keep working on the egglocke pages, as well as catch up on some nuzlocke fan art I've been putting off. As for livestreams, I may do some gaming and/or movie streams, but there will definitely be another crack request stream in the near future.
As you've probably gathered already, Arc 2 is going to be vastly different from Arc 1--but let me reassure you that this in no way means that the humor is gone forever. Kick@$$ Mode ha
Wurr: advance warning and stuffHi everyone!Wurr: advance warning and stuff1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I came here to ramble about future schedule things, projects and stuff.
First off, Wurr book/part/chapterthingy 3 is almost done, only three and half pages missing (and covers). Yay! (Still only in Finnish) However, as a little advance warning, I'm probably going to take a little break (a month-ish) from Wurr once the bit is finished. I've noticed this happening every time I finish a book, so this time I'm prepared for hiatusing a little, so a fair warning is in order. Besides, there's only one big-ish question mark in the script of Wurr and it's located around book/part/chapterthingy number four, so I'd like to take a bit of time to sort that out before venturing in to draw it.
Fear not, however! I'm not intending to disappear from the face of the Earth (except for a week in next month when I'll get kidnapped for a roadtrip with friends). I've got several projects that have been waiting for their turn in my attention. I have collected myself bunch of commissions to help w

The Triple BindI just read a pretty interesting book about the healthy emotional development of young girls called The Triple Bind. In a nutshell, it says that three contradictory rules are causing self-destruction among young teenage girls. The Triple Bind2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Rule#1: Fulfill the traditional "girl" expectations -- look pretty, be nice, get a boyfriend -- while excelling at "girl skills": empathy, cooperation, nurturing, relationship building, and family foundation.
Rule#2: Succeed at "boy goals" -- get straight A's, be a super athlete, be aggressive, be competitive, win acceptance to Ivy League, etc.
Rule#3: Be 100 perfect, 100 percent of the time and make it look effortless. Alternative roles that previously offered escape like beatnik, tomboy, intellectual, hippie, punk, or goth have been co-opted, consumerized, and forced into a single narrow definition of what a woman should be.
I realize this is a far cry from what I usually write about, but one chapter of the book
Abusive Artist Relationships [Are you in one?]Ask yourself these following questions to see if you are in an abusive relationship with an artist you watch on Deviantart/Tumblr/Whatever!Abusive Artist Relationships [Are you in one?]2 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. Do you dread checking your messages on a daily basis knowing you may see a journal about them which contains some form of verbal bashing that is indirectly pointed towards you? (i.e. "Fuck all you guys")
2. Do you worry yourself sick when they post short journals saying about how they're sick of life with the subtle indication they may be considering suicide? (i.e. "fuck this I'm so done." "i can't do this anymore" "bye.")
3. Do you find yourself responding to each of these trying to comfort them only to be completely unacknowledged?
4. Do they constantly post vents with suicidal hints with disabled comments?
5. Do they respond to what you have to say shortly and curtly without any consideration for your feelings? "whatever" or "why should I care what you say lol"
6. Do you find yourself completely tired of the artist's attitude towards everythi

EDIT: Guys, I'd kind of appreciate it if you don't totally go all out and compare the PnF episodes to the Seer, please. At least not in a serious way. It's kind of starting to bug me, not to mention may get Disney on my butt for a dumb fanfic. PLEASE STOP.
Phineas actually lost it in that episode.
OMG THAT WAS AMAZING! I loved how he was all curled up in a ball as they were climbing! I swear, I thought he was totally going to lose it by the end of the episode, heehee! XDD
I'm way behind in PnF episodes for season three. I blame school and the considerable lack of PnFness in some of the recent ones. 0.0 I may buy the seasons off itunes US one of these days, though. That way, it makes it easier for me to watch them and not panic about bad quality.
Guess who feels like drawing a Phineas again? X3

These are merely things I follow.Machati's Art Rules3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I added explanation to like all of them except two because if I'm anything, it's a rambler.
I might do another one of these in the future... anyways, here's 20 for now:
1. A good artist is a bad artist who never gives up
2. In the case of cartoonism; learn anatomy before you deform it
aka before you decide on drawing a...let's say deer a certain way. Go look up pictures of deer and learn more about them. Understand the deer before you go and make it stylized. Then and only then can you begin to put up the argument "it's just my style"; once it is not an excuse or something you're hiding behind because you do not know how actually dra

In Defense Of Making A Living Through ArtThere's a frustrating element I've noticed lately in regards to Art. "Art with a capital 'A'", as a friend of mine calls it. And I suppose this blog was triggered by the cancellation of the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fan game Fighting is Magic. The fandom lost its collective shit because Hasbro sent the developers a Cease and Desist letter. The entitlement was just amazing to watch, and even worse was the sheer ignorance. Some of it stupid, like "Technically, all fanworks are parodies, so it's not illegal!" and "Copyright laws are so stupid!" to cruel, like "They can just take their development overseas, then Hasbro can't stop them!"In Defense Of Making A Living Through Art2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was baffled by this. Because Hasbro had the right to protect their intellectual property.
See, I've been a freelance artist for a while now. And it's hard. It is so freaking hard, and part of the reason it's hard is because the default attitude of most people you deal with is, "We're not, like, going to pay you a lot. Or give you i
The Disney Vault -The Kimba/ Lion King controversyAlrighty, lets get down to business *rolls up sleeves*.The Disney Vault -The Kimba/ Lion King controversy2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This is a really big topic people are extremely passionate about. For those who don't know, when the Lion King was released it was the highest grossing animated picture at the time. Alas, everyone knows that the brighter the picture the darker the negative and with great success there was great backlash (as well as a billion of horrid Lion King OCs). The backlash concerned a old franchise named 'Kimba the White Lion', and the fans of said series claimed that 'The Lion King' was a rip off of Osamu Tezuka's 'Kimba the White Lion'.
Osamu Tezuka is considered the 'God of Manga' and one of the pioneers of the anime style. So he obviously has a huge fanbase and a formidable army against Lion King's massive fanbase. There was a lot of blood shed, a lot of finger pointing and name calling...It was absolutely beautiful.
Now I am not a rabid fan of 'The Lion King'. I do love the movie don't get me wrong, but if theres something wrong in the

The Ultimate DaArt Styles- An Artist Horror Story.Once upon a time, on a little internet island named dA there lived a naked tribe of artists. One day, the most clever of the artists, who also had the biggest head, created a magical tool called the 'airbrush' tool. And it was wonderful. With this new tool he painted portraits and artwork on his naked hiney. All the other naked tribesmen and uncensored women rounded round his round posterior to gaze and marvel at the creations.
One of the tribesmen spoke... 'I wish to do the same as our most clever, and big-headed kinsman, where can I illegaly download this airbrush tool so that I too may paint portraits of my favourite anime characters, game characters and ponies?' The most clever of the artists replied, and he shared his secrets, and soon, all of the tribe, with various levels of skill, adorned their peachy posteriors with pedantically painted portraits of people, and a
