Bestest Friend ContestCONTEST IS NOW OPEN!Bestest Friend Contest8 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
BESTEST FRIENDS ARE AWESOME.
In celebration of my bestest friend DreamingAutumn coming to visit me, we've decided to host a contest! The premise of this contest will be simple, write something to your best friend! It could be anything! Maybe you want to write them a letter telling them how much you care, or a write piece dedicated to them. Maybe you want to write about your favorite memory, your silliest moment, or that time you both laughed so hard your sides hurt because one of you did the Six Little Ducks Dance from Barney. ANYthing!
Want to donate something? Feature, points, pm, a print, something you made? Note either IrrevocableFate or DreamingAutumn. Or donate straight to RainbowMonkeh! If you donate a prize you're still eligible to enter and win!

Feature and CDOI finally am almost caught up on here and decided to do a feature for the premium membership day. Most of these are from my amazing and incredibly talented friends on here. I haven't had much time to look through group submissions to find new artists, but there are some I am very pleased to have found. I'm still working on the vampire piece I have been posting WIP posts for. It's about 75% done and should be finished soon. Enjoy the featureFeature and CDO1 year ago in Personal More Like This

10 years?!? wow!!!haha wow, i just noticed that I've officially been on deviantart for 10 years now. gotta draw something to commemorate that soon! i'm not gonna lie, it means quite a lot to me. even though i didn't know it at the time, putting my artwork online and joining art communities like deviantart has become the foundation of pretty much my entire LIFE as i know it now. i mean i started uploading my artwork to this site for fun, just to get in touch with other artists and gain some exposure, and now it is my career. i firmly believe that my fanbase here on deviantart and the things i've learned here have EVERYTHING to do with me being able to work as a freelance artist. i discovered so many inspiring and great artists through this site. the reason i chose the Utrecht School of the Arts as my college was because i followed Bakenius and loved his work; when i didn't like the school i was attending at the time, i contacted him through deviantart notes and he advised me to check out his school10 years?!? wow!!!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
A Brief Discussion About Tonal ContrastTraditional Art WeekA Brief Discussion About Tonal Contrast3 months ago in Art Features More Like This
In last Traditional Week, we talked about the elements which if you ignore can destroy your painting and all your hardwork.
What Ruins A Painting?
Contrast and Values were one main element that either can make your works fruitful or ruin it. It needs to be discussed more broadly as a lot of new artists have trouble to establish a good tonal contrast. Result? Despite their brilliant artistic skills, the picture does not pop up! It looks dull, muted. That is not the fault of the drawing or skills, it's the lack of observation and understanding lights.
Contrast is the difference between two values which helps you to dis
Traditional Artists Contest *more or less closed?EDIT:Traditional Artists Contest *more or less closed?3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Hello Traditional Artists
Today was the last day of my commission contest. I'm very thankful to all who have participated for their kindness and good will. I have chosen 3 works to buy as it was my primal intention and soon I'll be contacting the authors so we can agree on the terms of purchase.
I was contacted to extend the contest period, but as you can easily understand, this is not a regular contest: I think that any of you, traditional artists reading this, who have the will to produce a piece accordingly the rules below can contact me any time to show me a WIP or a finished work. If I like the piece, I'll buy it
Also below (scroll down to the end of the article) you can find my favourite works, wonderful pieces, just like I was looking for.
For now I'll remove the references I don't want any more but I'll keep the others available until the end of January 2013, so you are welcome to use them as I'm still commissioning you!
Thank you to all

Let’s talk about pencils, the handy tool that every artist uses. The pencil can seem pretty basic at first glance, just a mundane everyday object. But the pencil can create magic:
There are a variety of brands of pencils that you can use for art and a variety of kinds. Let’s quickly look at some examples:
Graphite Pencils: This is your humble every day pencil. It is useful for sketches and full scale black and white work. There are many brands ranging from cheap to expensive. Art graphite pencils vary in hardness. The best way to think of hardness is how easily the graphite smudges or applies to the paper. F is the lightest and the hardest lead (the graphite filling of a pencil) and 9B is the softest and darkest lead

I can't believe it's already February! Belated thank you for the faves and the comments on "Winter Lullaby" and "Lamia" in January, and on my sketches that I posted recently.
I've been creating more sketch ACEOs recently which I spend about an hour on each of them to complete. They are available for purchase.
The ones with fantasy theme, I post them on Monthly Fantasy Art Auctions http://www.facebook.com/groups/fantasyartauctions/ or Weekly Auctions From Fairyland http://www.facebook.com/groups/257816881013177/.
Non fantasy theme ACEOs will be posted on my facebook art page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pencil-Art-by-Mayumi/21
PE: Taking care of your drawingsTraditional Art WeekPE: Taking care of your drawings3 months ago in Art Features More Like This
There are countless tutorials on drawing, painting or anything else you fancy to create, but how about taking care of the finished picture? Here you might find a bunch of useful tips on how to take care of your drawing (taking care of paintings will be explained another time).
It's usually similar for the most kinds of media you might have used - as long as it's waterproof, fixative or hair spray will be enough. Some specific tools, such as ballpoint pens or some kinds of non-waterproof ink, might smudge during spraying and even more afterwards, so it's not recommended to save them that way.
Fixative or hair spray?
There are many opinions on both of them. Here are, however the facts: fixative is much more expensive than hair spray, it usually stinks awfully, and is considered the "pro" way to preserve the picture (uh oh). H
How to get really DARK backgroundsPeople ask me this all the time. How do I get such dark backgrounds on my drawings. The answer is complex, so I will step it out below. How to get really DARK backgrounds5 years ago in Personal More Like This
1) The paper you use MATTERS! I use only Bristol, which is 2 or 3 times thicker than drawing paper, so it has a strong tooth to the paper
2) I use either B or 2B. The softer you go (3B-9B) the more wax is in the graphite, which makes it like a crayon and hard to blend.
3) I KEEP the pencil SHARP, and I hold it SIDEWAYS.
4) I do small sections at a time
5) I TURN the pencil in my fingers as I darken the area. This also helps keep the pencil sharp.
6) I use a back and forth scraping motion, that I can FEEL dig into the paper.
7) I end up going back over it more than once before finished, in a different direction.
8) I LATER use a harder pencil (H, F) and go over the dark area again
9) I use a "workable spray fixative" made by Krylon which reduces glare
10) I never use a flash on the camera when taking the photo of it
11) I ONLY take the photo during the

August 7th, 2011 marks deviantART's 11th birthdAy, but in true devious style, we're taking a whole week to celebrate! Our original plans for Deviants Appreciation Day were so huge that there was no possible way to express our love for the community in a mere 24 hours. Instead, we've created Deviants Appreciation Week, and what better time to host a week's worth of community-oriented events than in the days leading up to our birthdAy?
Each day this week, we have something special organized for you to participate in! Check out the schedule of events below to come party with us!
In Skribble, our latest community contest, we challenge

"Todays the day before Hika-chan's and Kao-chan's b-day" Honey senpai screamed
"Shhh this party is supposed to be a surprise" you screamed back
He decided it would be better if he sat there and eat cake. You blow up a lot of balloons. There were pink, blue, and orange. They were the twin's favorite colors. You couldn't think of a guy that loved pink. You guessed now Hikaru was that guy. Just think about Hikaru made you blush.
"I'm going to go get the cake but no eating it Honey. The cake belongs in the fridge till tomorrow. "You screamed
"You ran to the bakery where you got the cake it was a 2 layered cake one pink and one blue. Tamaki was crazy for making those the only colors the decorations and food could be. You saw a store and remembered that you still needed some things so you ran in and got pink and blue cups and orange juice, pineapple juice, and lemon juice and some blue and pink silver wear. And you ran back to music room

In 2008, I started working for my father's company in the oil business as an IT Assistant while going to college. I never intended to make a career out of working for my father. However, a year after I started working there the company was in desperate need of a new website and complete revamping of our branding. My father was well aware of my hobby with digital art and experience coding so he asked me if I would take on the website and re-branding inbetween working on IT jobs and I agreed. A few weeks later, I presented my ideas for the site and branding, which he approved and I immediately began working on the implementation of both.
Once everything went live I received a promotion that essentially put me in charge of all future advertising for the company. Basically, everything from email signatures, business cards, brochures, to animated presentations are designed and/or reviewed by me before they are seen by clients. Currently, I am

Less than two weeks to go - nog minder dan twee weekjes wachten!
On Sunday 1st July, I will be organising a devmeet in Amsterdam! Ever wanted to meet your fellow deviants? Join us on this (hopefully) sunny Sunday afternoon for a lunch, a babble and maybe artistic endeavours and dA goodies... if you can bring your camera, sketchbook, portfolio, whatever you have
We will meet at 1 pm at the Central Station (specifically, at the Hema next to the Starbucks, at the southern side where the west and mid tunnels under the platforms join), from where we'll walk to the Leids square to find a nice place to have lunch and hang out. I'm working on a plan B in case of bad weather.
Please comment if you'd like to come, and feel free to ask any questions
Cymae will even be flying over from New Zealand, so I'm co
